Interview was actually my first LP from this outstanding band!
I first heard the band on the German radio in 1976 with "On Reflection" from the album "Freehand" and immediately fell in love!❤
Since the record dealer couldn't sell the "right" album (Freehand), I took "Interview" with me!
By the way, it's the only album I know of that has a German book about it! I think it's even a thesis?!
In any case, I haven't stopped loving and adoring Gentle Giant since then!
In my opinion the best band that has ever lived!
Rest in peace, Ray 😢
We need some of this for EACH GIANT ALBUM! We all want to know the start of the band, the 1, 2, 3, friends, all of them. It is so great music that these artists deserve all the attention.
Share the video and let’s make it popular enough to justify their time! :)
@@MakeWeirdMusic From what I understand, they don't have the multi-tracking of the best albums, neither Acquiring the Taste nor Three Friends nor Octopus nor In a Glass House nor The Power and the Glory... It's a real shame, this irreparable loss.
Gentle Giant is one of the most original bands in modern music. The musical level of each member and as a team is simply extraordinary. There are bands that are way ahead of their time and musical era, and Gentle Giant is clearly one of them. I truly admire and love Gentle Giant. Thank you so much for your music, your creativity and your beautiful musical " craziness ".
If there was any one band that I would have loved a reunion with a new album and even possibly a tour it would be Gentle Giant.
Sadly that will never happen now that Ray has passed away.
At least their catalogue has been treated with respect. I love those Steven Wilson remixes (I love all of Steven’s work.)
So, we should be thankful.
We love Gentle Giant.
Thanks for the great interview guys!
🤘😳🤘
OMG !! I didn't know Ray died. 🙏🏾💜 Peace to his family and friends ❣
He, and all of the GG crew, brought SO much joy and beauty to people's lives.
We've been enriched many times over.
I'm grateful beyond words for all his work !
While we all must go,
... still I'm sad . And I'm so sorry to find out he had to struggle long with health problems.
He and you all are such FINE musicians.
I just learned a couple of days ago. Ditto to everything you said.
If I may, "Design" contrasts extreme beauty with harsh atonalism. Kind of like life. Absolutely fantastic. WAY ahead of its time. My opinion.
Gentle Giant was a amazing and unforgettable band. ❤🏆🇧🇷
100%
Thank you SO much for bringing the Boys in the Band to talk about their marvelous music!!
Gentle Giant will live on far beyond All of Us!!!...such a Great Band!!!...as a drummer,John Weather's is Awesome!!!
He is becoming my favorite interviewee of Gentle Giant members. He speaks so passionately and with so much love and enthusiasm, I totally relate to his interpretation of their incredible talent and music.
💙Ray💙
Thank you for your help watching this, Sharon!
@@MakeWeirdMusic you’re welcome! It was a great learning experience!
Fantastic band that used the studio to its full potential. Got to see them live 3 times. Their approach to playing live was totally different. They were ALL natural show men and having seen every major prog band live i can say without any doubt that giant were in a league of their own.
Thank you for this amazing post.
John is such a goofball but is also just such an excellent musician, it’s great to see
He's so fun
Kerry Minnear has always been my teacher without knowing about it. Love you Kerry!
Lucky you. The man is a Giant.
Great to hear from “the Giants” of prog thank you, RIP Ray an amazing musician, writer and arranger 👍🏻
Weathers hitting the vape pen at the start of the interview lolol I would expect nothing less from that madman. Love these guys.
My favorite band since the first time I heard them live, playing octopus. I absolutely love Interview, "Design" being one of my favorite songs ever written abstract expressionist in music no one else has reached this pinnacle, a controlled kaos that shouldn't work but dose when done by geniuses! Great interview, Thanks!
SO COOL TO SEE THEM ALL TOGETHER TALKING ABOUT THEIR MUSIC. SAW THEM LIVE IN 77 I THINK AT HOLLYWOOD PALACE IN BALTIMORE. BLEW ME AWAY. MY LOCAL BAND CAMELOT PLAYED THEIR AS WELL. PROUD THAT WE PLAYED WHERE GENTLE GIANT PLAYED.
These guys right here: Most down to earth bunch of musical geniuses ever! Thank you.
Yep!
Especially Kerry and Ray.
Probably my all time favorite band. The first time I heard them, I wasnt sure, because they challenged my listening skills, but I stuck with them until I just fell in love with the music.
The part where they are all praising John is so sweet - that said I'm also really impressed about his knowledge of composing and production.
John is a secret gem!
Amazing, magical, elegant and unpredictable GG. Thank you for your hard work. Your music will forever go down in the musical history of mankind.
A top band in my life. I've been listening all their great, exhilarating and inspiring music with a awe and emotion for years and years. Thanks for the video
Always excited to stumble on another recent interview of the boys. And on Interview, no less! I hope that vape at the end was THC, not nicotine. Love you guys.
Wonderful to see these guys reminisce with helpful prodding by the interviewers. The fact that GG still enthuse music lovers after all these years is a testament to the enduring power of their compositions, personalities and musicality.
So talented these musicians. The music is fantastic. i have all material from Gentle Giant.
i was 11 when i heard their music. It sounds so good.
Such a phenomenal group. Now that I´m in my mid 60´s, I appreciate Gentle Giant music even more. Interestingly, the opposite happened to other bands from that era. Just amazing. Ray was such a underrated bass player, as were all the other guys for that matter. May he rest in peace.
Agreed. Did you see our tribute video to Ray?
@@MakeWeirdMusic I think I did, if it´s the video I´m thinking. Anyway, I don´t play the bass but it´s my favorite instrument and Ray was one of my great heroes. May he be in peace.
I love this conversation. It was hard to pay attention though with the music playing in the background. The band is super tight on this album. I think it could have been better if they had more time. Similarly, the live version of "Free Hand" is a better arrangement than the studio recording.
Brilliant is the only way to describe Gentle Giant. Great discussion. Many thanks.
Thank you, Anthony (and Mike) for this really fun and informative "in'terview" interview! Absolutely enjoyed the hell out of this, and can't wait to hear Part 2.
Gentle Giant was an explosion of creativity, variety, and innovation for a decade. Wonderful music that needs to be curated for the ages. My only hope is they can adequately influence generations to come to make music as appealing. I salute all of these fine gentlemen.
Agreed, Dan!
Thank you Anthony for these heartfelt Interviews with this amazing band. It's so great to see and hear the impressions and experiences of the members Gentle Giant recalling how things where accomplished. I am looking forward to part 2.
Thank you Ze Baron!!
This is Super Fabulous! Thank You All! ❤️🙏
I really enjoyed this! Great video and conversation with the great band.
Thank you!
This album is by far my favorite GG. It always has hit hella hard for me. Design is my favorite song too
Perhaps it will be there in a following episode of this interview, but yet again I find it remarkable that Derek Shulman's qualities as a lyric writer and lead singer aren't mentioned. His lyrics and vocals were definitely a corner stone in Gentle Giant's music.
Yeah, for some reason we didn't really go there.
Epic interview! Long live GENTLE GIANT!
Will never get enough of these guys: they created some of the best music ever!
Yes it's been hard, going a long time! And we're together even now.
What a wonderful bunch of modest, musical genious chaps. Started listening to them when I was 12, still finding something new in their music. Thank you Sirs.
Thanks for watching
Great questions great answers. Great interview! Absolutely, adore this band!
I feel so sad that Ray died. This band are so unique in their compositions. Too good even for 70s prog rock fans like me at the time they sounded 'weird' and folky. Now, I'm 64 and I'm slowly realising they were better than their peers, musically and technically.
Did you see our tribute to Ray?
Great!
❤
what cool guys! how nice it is to see and listen to their communication. It's a pity that the mysterious British source that gave the world so much brilliant original talent in the music of the 70s has now dried up.
Like a gentle giant, the most majestic creature on Earth.
This is a fantastic interview.
"Free Hand" and "Interview" were my introduction to Gentle Giant. They came into the home simultaneously. I was studying classical violin at the time. My brother always knew what to play me first when he introduced a new band or artist to me. In this case it was "On Reflection". Knowing nothing at all about the band, I listened to the albums as pure music and loved them both, but perhaps 'Interview' a little bit more. It was so extreme! Every track was a work of art. I love those albums to this day, and I owe Gentle Giant a great deal as a musician. Great video! Can't wait for part two.
That was my first (and still favorite) track as well.
This channel is absolutely incredible. You are such an awesome guy for providing this level of content. There is no other channel or source of media that even comes close to catering to fans of this kind of music. We are a small fan base, but we are intense and dedicated. God bless you, for you are truly doing God’s work.
🥹
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSS
Playing the Fool in surround is a dream of mine. Please make it hay!
I was introduced to progressive rock in 2002 by our flute player, Cheung Yiu Munn. He was then 18 and from Hong Kong...yet he was superbly knowledgeable about late 1960s and early 1970s progressive rock groups. Prior to meeting him, my love of music focused exclusively on baroque and 20th century classical works...and nothing else! Well, after sampling 2 or 3 tracks each of Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, The Family and Van Der Graff Generator (and only The Family really impressed me at the time) I listened to Gentle Giant and it happened to be this album. I could not believe what I heard! I listened to the entire album...then made a mug of tea, rolled a cigarette and listened to the whole album again. By the end of the month I had purchased ALL their studio albums (which means, of course, I had to endure the shabby pop pap of the final 3 which, though superbly played, are not impressive as music, at least compared to what came before it). From Giant to Interview there's not a single track I don't enjoy. Three Friends (especially Schooldays) and Octopus (especially Knots, Boys In The Band and Think Of Me With Kindness) are probably my favourites. Our own group, UNIT, began to explore progressive rock territory as a result of my acquaintance with all this music and our sound changed accordingly although we never sounded like Gentle Giant. How could we? I mean, how could any group sound like them? Splendid stuff.
Amazing music from wonderful musicians. So glad you had that experience
humble chaps!
Indeed
Awesome!! I now will put on my mask and be a giant for a day,….ahhhh memories of old days.
Hahaha, I don't have that LP
@@MakeWeirdMusic it's a must!!! Mate....I will buy it for you
Absolute geniuses! Great to see them together years later. I saw them at the Palladium in NYC in a believe 1977 and they were amazing!
Thanks for this roundtable which was more than nostalgia (which it was in part), but music history as well. Hearing the discussion of "cowboy piano" added to my appreciation of the DIY nature of '60's and '70's rock! (By the time I was studying recording in the '80's it was a bit easier to create a tack piano sound with the then new Eventide Harmonizer.)
What I'd like to know also is how they did the part after the "cowboy piano," with the low, "elastic" nearly human voice odd rhythm overlayed with Gary playing the recurring theme. It is very weird and very much appreciated, of course.
Design is my favourite GG piece too!
Weirdo! 😜
The first time I heard "Design" was my introduction to GG, the whole Interview album. A friend brought it over and we got stoned on weed, and we were very stoned by the time "Design" came on. From there, got my own copy and gradually came to really love it. It has a narrative structure of sorts, with an exposition in the third person before shifting to the first person reflecting on the passing of time and his dubious place in it. But there's no denouement. Just a stare into the abyss with the awful, rancorous epiphany that the "years drift by, never for me." Maybe it's time to break out the Sartre.
As Derek posed the question, why would a band do such a thing? For that matter, why would Crimson do "Larks Tongue in Aspic" or Todd Rundgren do "Freak Parade"? I suppose because these things hadn't been done before. It was the '70s after all.
Such an epic band. So original, a multitude of styles all their own. My favorite band since I was 14 years old. That’s when I first saw them and they Fascinated me, then, and the music still sounds fresh to me now. I still discover things every time I hear them light years ahead of their time. Masterful musicians.
Thanks for interviewing them! One of my favorite bands
Mine too!
At maybe 14 yrs of age (1975), having not even gotten into jazz, I got turned on to Gentle Giant and Genesis (1st album) .
Studied classical, and listened to pop/rock.
🤯🤩🥰
LOVED them immediately.
Wow! Thanks fellow weirdo's for bringing us yet another band that was so good, the mainstream couldn't digest them. Always keep in mind that if music critics knew jack about music, they wouldn't be critics, but musicians. Many come off as disgruntled failed musicians that didn't have what it takes.😡
It's said that a large portion of their audiences were musicians, many of them also professional (More or less) and way more known!🤯
Looking forward to part 2!🥳
Thank you Bob!
@@MakeWeirdMusic 🤗🤭
Enjoyed it very much. Wonderful balanced mixing and clear vids. Captured a very important interview. All members excited and engaged with your observations of their work. Bravo !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
good bunch of guys!
Thank you!
You're welcome, Spike
So good to hear them chat together!
I remember reading this name Gentle Giant from time to time, but never heard anything from them on the radio or somewhere else - and none of my schoolfriends did either. In pop magazines I saw pictures of guys obviously having fun on stage, but dressed up like Robin Hood (especially Gary if I remember right) and playing similar funny "hoodian" instruments. So I absolutely couldn´t figure out what kind of music would come out of them.
Then a friend recorded the whole album Free Hand from radio - that was possible back then - and I was totally stunned by the very first song "Just the same" already. It couldn´t be further away from what I´d expected which was nothing great. Some kind of upbeat Jazz-Rock with lyrics or what - never had heard anything like that.
It took me a while to "work" through the rest of the album I admit, but finally I got it. They taught me a universe of music that was unknown to me, but I don´t wanna get too "pretentious" myself now. So I conclude with the simple fact that GG became my favourite band and music since then. Thanks guys!
Epic video love it so much!!! I would love to watch endless interviews of this band talking about each albums they have made for endless hours (especially Acquiring The Taste).
There's 40 minutes or so left of this interview. I think I'll do a part 2 and that's it. 3 parts is too much!
@@MakeWeirdMusic Hey anthony my name is jake feldman thanks so much for doing this and making this happen much appreciated. All the best to you my gg brother-cheers!
@@1359401 Jake, haven’t we talked before?
@@MakeWeirdMusic the only time we maybe talked or had contact with each other was perhaps through UA-cam . Or your Facebook page
I could listen to this group of guys talk for hours. What i would give to sit down and just pick some of GG’s brains or shoot the shit with Gary.
Freaking AWESOME interview. Thank you.
I love Crim, Yes and Genesis, but GG are on my car stereo more often, thanks to the funkiness.
GG is the best!
Absolutely loved part 1. It's so enlightening to hear the band talk about the subtleties of this album and others. It's a very relaxed and informal interview - great job, Anthony and Mike!
Thank you!
Superb interview with the band. Does anyone have any idea if the band are going to reissue Acquiring The Taste? My personal favourite album.
Grandiosi e Geniali GG. La vostra musica mi ha migliorato la vita. Vi amo. I miss yoi very much Ray ❤
The greatest most epic legendary genius unique criminally obscenely underrated band ever enough said end of story mic drop.
Hard agree!
Thank you for this. 🙏🏻❤️😎
You're welcome
Love it Thank You!
Always a band people discover after KC, Genesis, and Yes.....but they exceed the others in many ways.
Heroes!!!!! I frequently share my GG covers on instagram and they often repost the stories on their page. Geniuses, humble, heroes!!
That is just Fantastic! That is Really what we Think!!! By the way...which one's Gentle!?
Really, any of them heard the Dolby Atmos mix???
I am setting up Atmos in my studio & bedroom for playback QC.
Have the new discs and was in my convertible blasting (stereo) from Hollywood thru Laurel Canyon to The Valley! Ecstatic! The looks on people's faces...Priceless! ( W T F!!!)
Hopefully Dweezil is busy doing We're Only in it for the Money soon in Atmos!
Seen GG many times since opening for Tull, Focus, etc!
THE most UNDERRATED band EVER!!!!! Kerry is a heartfelt Genius!
Tho I worked for Chick (engineer, made english muffins, HE made his own Earl Grey perfume tea, did NOT share with him my Sheryl Crow pie!) for years, twas always Kerry & Keith (Rod & Rick too)!
John-FUNKIEST of the Prog drummers!!! RIP Ray-loved his faces in concert! Amazing!
Gary-bringer of mighty blues and the guitar duet with Ray was tear inducing!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
You’re welcome! You’ll love part 2
An interview about Interview!
Has the band had any luck finding the tapes for In A Glass House? Would love to hear a Steven Wilson remix on that classic.
We discuss that in the latter half of the interview. But the short answer is: no.
@@MakeWeirdMusic From what I understand, they don't have the multi-tracking of the best albums, neither Acquiring the Taste nor Three Friends nor Octopus nor In a Glass House nor The Power and the Glory... It's a real shame, this irreparable loss.
The first three albums are the ones that maybe deserved a remix using modern equipment like Wilson has at his disposal. From Octopus on, production achieved a great level and I’m really satisfied with the original mixes. Just my opinion.
Great interview! I could listen to these guys all day
Me too. It was super fun
This is so cool. I am anxiously awaiting my ordered copy!
Let me know when you get it!
@@MakeWeirdMusic Just got it in today. Going now for a good attentive listen. 🎶
This was great to see. Looking forward to the next part.
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed
Well that was fantastic. I’m really looking for to the next part. Thanks to all the participants! GG, MK, and MWM all rock.
Thanks Mark!
I’m so thankful to see my heroes of Gentle Giant share their thoughts. I suppose these remixes are a catalyst for that so thank you. Personally though, I prefer the original Gentle Giant mixes. Interview is an incredible album. Such an apropos concept and theme. I love the songs Interview and Timing the most. Also, their live versions on Under Construction kick ass!
Thanks for watching!
✌️🤘😎👍🖖
bautiful!!
Thank you
One of those men wrote Convoy!!!!
Wow! You did a great job! Sounds clear, they look great!
Thank you! Cheers!
"Timing" has the most changes in the mix. Took me by surprise in a good way.
Saw them at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC after the Playing The Fool came out. Saw lots of prog shows then, Yes Tull and Genesis album after album. They were my big three. But Giant was different. Exquisite. Nothing less than magnificent. Such accuracy playing and singing. Not that Steve Howe was less accurate but the writing of Giant was so pinpoint structured.
Que lindo seria poder verlos en un escenario yo creo que seria algo especial y no imposible
Lamentablemente John Weathers ya no puede tocar la batería debido a enfermedad, y Ray Shulman falleció el año pasado, jamás regresarán al escenario.
Had the thrill of seeing them in concert, twice. Second time, front row seats. One incredibly influential band. Wonderful, tight music.
Gary's comment about phrasing vs. counting is something Gary Husband also said of Allan Holdsworth's music. It's all just flow.
Wonderful interview. Can't get enough GG!
I love it when Gary says he isn't counting really. It's about learning phrases that fit together. That's how I feel it too. But obviously that doesn't help be a good musician 😀. Now I'm not very happy about this interview because now I have to spend money to buy this new version !!!!
I remember seeing you guys about 3 times in Germany. What about Frank, your roadie? He got us into a Genesis/Peter Gabriel concert back in the States when my brother Stan, of Happy the Man, and the rest of us arrived outside of Pittsburgh. You see, we realized after driving up 3 hours that NONE OF US HAD TICKETS or MONEY. So, Frank recognized my brother and I. He let us become temporary roadies to bring in Genesis equipment. Which we did! Anyways, GG was the best.
One DREGS.!!!
It is interesting what Gary says on I Lost My Head: There is an organ now which didn't appear in the original mix, but in comparison with the 2012 Remaster it is comprehensible that this was not orginally used. At about 05:11 there is a mistake at Kerry's piano that wasn't there either.
Great stuff. How many bands have ripped of this album?
Interesting observation about timing. I just synched up both versions and played them together. Yes, there are two Derek verses in the remix, but what's even more interesting is that during the guitar solo the drums don't sync up like the rest of the recording. Sounds like Wilson edited the beat to make it more straightforward. It's very noticeable toward the end of the song. Anyone else notice this?
