Grew up in a small town literally in the middle of North Dakota. Was starting to get into music but options were limited in the early 70s. When I got out of High School I moved to Minneapolis. First concert I ever went to was in August of 1972. Black Sabbath. And guess who the opening band was? Gentle Giant. So the First band I ever saw live was Gentle Giant. I had heard the name and seen the albums but had never heard the music. They were great.
Fast forward to 2014. Cruise To The Edge. Prog cruise. Three Friends is on the ship. I saw both performances . 42 years apart. I did get to talk to Gary Green and Malcolm Mortimore and told them of the large gap between the shows. They were both a little surprised.
When Three Friends played on the Cruise they were in one of the clubs on the ship. Both times the room was packed to beyond capacity. And not just with passengers but with members of other bands playing on the Cruise. Definitely a memorable time. I do have some live video I shot on the cruise on my UA-cam channel if anyone is interested.

Dude, you left off the ending of that Sabbath tour story. First, it was also their first US tour, so when it became apparent that it just wasn't going to work with Sabbath's fan base, they were strung out high and dry and 1000s of miles from home. In steps Jethro Tull, who were also on tour in the States. Ian and the boys caught the last Giant/Sabbath show, realized the plight Giant were in, and offered them a spot on their tour, thus saving the band's American debut, at bare minimum, and possible the fate of the band itself, as they were mightily bummed at the time.

Well done, Pete! The first complete history of Giant I ever saw! When I was in 'high' school in the 70s, Welcome Back My Friends, Yessongs and Playing the Fool were all next to each other. Ray was one of my bass idols; I played along with Knots, Freehand, etc. I still get angry at UA-cams of their live shows, because they NEVER show Ray's incredible opening to Freehand. I agree with your 'I don't get it' comment. Even among hard core proggers back then, many dismissed GG as 'math rock'! Excuse me? I think 'on reflection', many in the US couldn't latch on to the inclusion of British madrigal music and vocal harmonies mixed with other elements. Finally, I had the pleasure of attending both the 'Fool and Missing Piece tours, both at The Palladium in NYC. The best thing about GG live? They NEVER played the same setlist! My experience with the 'Fool tour was ENTIRELY different than the album. A great group; I wish you could have 'experienced' them in person. Again, thanks for a job well done! -Bert

Thoroughly enjoyable review of one of my favourite bands of all time. Followed them from the early mid-70s when they were touring promoting the release of Octopus. I still have perfectly clear memories of the first time I saw Phil and the boys. Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, City Hall. Pretty sure they were the support for Groundhogs. Not a logical mix but the Geordie punters were more accepting of GG's music than US Sabbath fans were later 😅.
Couldn't believe how musically diverse a rock band could be: the instruments, the talents, the sublime music. An astounding band, every member, for all the reasons stated in this excellent history. Very enjoyable, thank you! 😙😆

I live in West Virginia not far from Winchester Virginia where in the days of my youth Capitol
had a pressing plant out where Trex is now. Anyhow a guy that ran a little shop out of his rural home used to go there and essentially take the rejects or garbage I’ve heard, come back and sell to us for crazy prices like 25 or 50 cents for cassette tape or a buck or two for records. Remember when the Beatles red and blue comps came out, he had bunch of them. Everyone in our town had the red and blue vinyl got a lot of good exposure to those bands that way
Anyway sorry this is long but we got our hands on GG this way in late 70s, I remember we were driving home and my friend popped in his power and the glory cassette and I was dumbfounded.. about 5 minutes later the driver guitar player…hits the eject, rolls down the window and tosses it into the field. He couldn’t understand it but it was funny forever to us caused we loved them…He never got Zappa either…some people just aren’t built to think that much….certainly,I kept mine …and here we are years later

Their live show was seamless. They moved from one instrument to another while something was going on elsewhere on stage and then BAM, there would be Minnear on vibes and then suddenly Ray on violin then Derek on trumpet....just as they got to certain parts of their music there would be someone to play the part. To this day, they are the greatest band I have ever seen live! Nowadays technology can almost guarantee a band will sound good. Back then, the dynamics, vocals, and everything to do with the sound had to do with how the musicians played together. They were the greatest at it!

    • @johnsurrey7426

You’re so right! GG didn’t use back-up musicians, tapes, computers - they were just five of the most gifted musicians (in any genre) ever to grace a stage. I say that as a musician myself - a keyboard player who people say is pretty good. But then I watch the five of them effortlessly making their way through complex time signatures and polyrhythms, and realise how much I have to learn. Total respect, gentlemen!

In A Glass House. The vinyl had a unique cover, stark black, a cellophane window (the glass house, of course) with a sleeve that slid in and out featuring black on white silhouette images of the members playing various instruments. I still have it, I think. Need to check. I still listen to them. That was my intro to the Giant. Wow did they begin to hit at the worst possible moment for a prog rock band: New Wave didn't really require musicians, Punk made them the enemy, and then along comes MTV. Game over. I heard Frank Zappa mention them as the only interesting thing going on in music at the time in an interview. Nice job on this video, thanks.

Thanx for Your great exposée of Gentle Giant's music! I agree almost with your view on good vs not so good songs, except "It's Only Goodbye". I think itś a wonderful and haunting song, with Gary Greens slow recurring guitar theme, and solo, so beautiful that it hurts. I saw GG live twice in Stockholm, Sweden 1975 & 1976. I reviewed then in the local paper in my northern hometown Umeå, pictures and all. I was almost knocked to the floor by their music and Live stage show with all the instrument changes in mid song; Hammond organ to vibraphone or cello, bass guitar to violin, electric guitar to recorder, drums to vibraphone, electric guitar to acoustic guitar and back aso, aso! Umeå was like a "Ground Zero" for GG music, but understandable No local band even Tried to do a cover of Gentle Giant's incredible songs. Thanx again!

Stilll listening regularly. Who would have thought after so many years. Got the first taste in 73-74. Friend of mine played Glass House, Experience and I was hooked on master inner voices.
Finally got to see them, by chance heard an ad on radio for show that night at a local club. It was June 3, 1980 (2 weeks before final concert), The Agora ballroom in Houston (it had changed to the Palace but we still called it Agora). Just a night club setting at a table 40 feet from stage front center, having cocktails. It was superb.
We were fortunate to have so many great artist's visit Houston from that period. Tull, ELP, Yes, Strawbs, Al Stewart, original Genesis, and Renaissance in Jones hall (the exceptional home of the symphony).

Gentle is one of my 4 preferred artists of the progressive period. Ending in 75. More, they are one of the best bands of all time. However, after the unique classic 4, and Phil's departure, GG never sounded the same. But it was good anyway, especially Free Hand. Best album: Acquiring the Taste.

I was lucky enough to see them live in, I think, 1975. Amazing show. For outright virtuosity plus relentless energy, only ELP could compete with these guys. One of the things I remember the most is the sheer joy that radiated from the band. They clearly loved what they were doing. It wasn't about cranking out a hit. It was purely the music. When the show ended, I couldn't believe it was over. I checked the time and, yes, they gave a full concert. Time was just swallowed up in the moment.

Hello. Great job reviewing the Gentle Giant albums, enjoyed it a lot. I’m older than you, so based on a recommendation from a guy in the record store I started listening to them, and I had all their albums, though I only have “Playing the Fool” among live albums. I think you could have divided their albums into 2 periods, the first 4 and then the rest. On the song Interview, they sing, “After the fourth one, realization…” Yes, the 5th and 6th albums were amazing, but I read where Shulman said that the record company thought that “In A Glass House” was no good, so they wouldn’t promote it.
Indeed, “The Power and the Glory” was incredible. I think you could have said that “Cogs In Cogs” was an example of the permutations and counterpoint they often used. But you got it right, an incredible arrangement for sure. I was studying in the USSR, that was intense, and I listened to the second side of that album many times there (on cassette).
You may find this hard to believe, but I really didn’t like “Interview,” so I wrote them a letter and said I was disappointed in the way they were going, not-so-good albums after the 5th and the 6th (though in retrospect “Free Hand” was great), and they answered my letter with “The Missing Piece.” I know why there is a piece missing from the Giant’s head on the back cover. I thought that was a great album, but indeed they had to change styles because rock music was changing. Notice, that was the only studio album with no lyrics. I could tell you the lyrics if I knew you.
Agree that their next album was quite weak. I thought “Civilian” was great, and the only time I saw them live was soon after that album came out. They proved that they could adapt to any changes in music on that album, but clearly that had had enough, so we can be grateful for 10 great albums.
Thanks a lot. A good journey through a great band’s music.

I enjoyed this video. I grew up in LA and went to many concerts. I saw Gentle Giant live about 7 or 8 times. I first saw them in 1973 when they played the Whiskey A GoGo for a week. I was in high school and didn’t drive yet. We were blown away the first night and came back for 2 more shows that week. Also saw them over the next few years at the Shrine Auditorium and the Santa Monica Civic Center. They were such an amazing band, especially live. So original, talented and fun. I totally understand when people don’t get them, but me and my friends sure did. I also loved the Mother’s of Invention who many people did not like but were also (like GG) amazing musicians.

For the last week or so, thanks to you, Pete, I've been going through their catalog on my music app, and man, never have I been so consistently blown away time and time again. How many bands release six great albums in a row, all different, all remarkably innovative and with unparalleled musicality? Most amazing of all is that I never heard of this band until I started watching your videos. Most UK prog, with the exception of King Crimson, I have never really dug that much (e.g. ELP, Yes, Genesis, Tull), but Gentle Giant is far superior, IMO, which makes it even more incomprehensible to me that I have only now caught on to them
I would only add a bit heavier emphasis to new GG listeners and audiophiles to check out THREE PIECE SUITE, which you didn't mention has a 5.1 mix of selections from their first three LPs, AND visual accompaniment (animated shorts) for each selection as well. The remixes by Steven Williams are just fantastic, with the last three selections comprising side two of the THREE FRIENDS album, which is a perfect ending since that one is currently my favorite (but I haven't really gotten around to really digesting albums 4, 5, and 6 yet, so that may change).
Another reason to recommend THREE PIECE SUITE more highly, particularly if you stream your music from a subscription app, is that this is the only GG release currently available in ultra high definition. When I streamed this album through a tube amp with a digital analog converter, it was audio nirvana all the way.

I had tickets to see them in 1980 on the CIVILIAN tour-in Poughkeepsie NY. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled day of show. No reschedule and, unfortunately, no more GG. They decided to lay it to rest after that tour. There is a YT audio of a live show in CT from that same tour. I missed them in the mid 70s in my hometown of Roanoke VA. I found out after the show-they were buried in a multi-act lineup which included Foghat(yikes!). It distresses me that they aren't better known. Recently, there was a "best prog rock keyboardist" list and not ONE mention of Kerry Minnear. That is inexcusable. He was inextricably involved in the composition of GG's music; utilizing his degree in Composition from the Royal Academy in London. His ability as a composer and as a keyboardist, cellist, tuned percussionist and vocalist put him at the top of any mention of Progressive Rock keyboardists. He has a thorough and deep understanding of English Renaissance music-vocal and instrumental ( weaving devices such as "hocketing" into "On Reflection" from FREE HAND).
It is gratifying to see the interest in their music today. Derek and Ray both went on to great success as executives at Atlantic and Elektra Records-respectively.
Until recently, Gary Green, Malcomb Mortimer and initially, Kerry Minnear, had a band called Three Friends, continuing to play GG's music. Gary suffered a heart attack-I've not heard whether he will be able to continue Three Friends(actually, now, since Kerry isn't involved, Two Friends). I wish him all the best and to the other members as well.

Its so freaky, I was listening to Gentle Giant before and after work on the way home, and came home to this wonderful video...:) What a great underrated and overlooked band, who should be played on classic rock radio. Favorite album is a tossup between Freehand and Power And The Glory, with School Days being my 2nd favorite and In A Glasshouse being 3rd. I own the Simon Dupree and the big sound album but its pretty used and beat up. I used to have the live 1977 album on vinyl, but stupidly sold it. Even their overplayed songs,I never get tired of. So many twists and turns in all of their albums, even the crappy ones....there's always a handful of good melodies and cool instrumental passages.

Unfortunately they probably werent satanic enough. The industry is ALL ABOUT satanism crap. If the band isnt interested in selling out to satan - this satanic industry wont play them or promote them. Its a completely perverted system. Any artist getting play and gigs has HAD to sell out to satan, otherwise they can stay poor and non promoted. Basically every single movie star and commercialized musician has had to sellout. Isnt that weird to know nowadays in the great awakening? Something to keep in mind.

Thank you so much for sharing. I've not encountered a band like Gentle Giant since the incredible King Crimson and I never thought I would. Gentle Giant has changed my mind that there are a few other bands worth discovering from this incredible period in music. Please do a review of the Gentle Giant 'Unburied Treasures' box set. By the look of things you have most of the recordings that will be in the set but also by the look of things there are at least 7 previously unreleased live albums you HAVE to have being a massive fan. Feel good because although the first run of the box set sold out in record time, there is another 1000 copies of the set being released again as the band was blown away that they were so popular which is great to see. I've been watching these live snippets of the band and I've not heard or seen a single clip I have not only immensely enjoyed but been blown away with. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time and sadly so very neglected by the mainstream music business. Anyway, 'Burning Shed' just do a google search and you will find them, are doing pre-orders for the 2nd 1000 set release of 'Unburied Treasure' and I'd be shocked if you didn't see some extreme value in obtaining this set. PS. I'm looking at those Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree Blu-ray releases and seriously considering getting them. Could you please share with us if the 24bit/96KHz quality on the bluray is superior to the current available album releases. Thank you, Sean.
