Fightin' talk? I'm not so sure. In my humble opinion I believe Call of Cthulhu is the best Introduction to RPGs, and here's why!
Pick up the excellent starter set here: amzn.to/2XbC7t1
or get it on DrivethruRPG here: www.drivethrur...
I want to make it clear, HP Lovecraft was a problematic individual with views extreme even for his time. Neither myself, the game designers nor people I have played with have ever shared or condoned these views.

Agreed, it's particularly good and bringing adults into the hobby that previously saw RPGing as sad or 'just for kids'.

Well said. Intuitive, easy to understand, and easily adaptable to almost any era or type of game play, Call of Cthulhu and the BRP are probably the easiest for new players to grasp.

I love Call of Cthulhu! Great video man. I agree!

Tye mechanics make it easier to learn. There arent feats or special abilities (until you get into spells later)that new players need to remember.
    Great video.

I started researching D&D but then discovered CofC and explored it more, having now a decent Chaosium collection. Finally, the first game i ever "DMed" was a one on one session with Paper Chase from the Starter Set.

That's awesome; the starting scenarios for Call of Cthulhu all do a great job of presenting the rules and setting

You are so right with introducing new players by using a game set in the “real” world. I’ve found Onyx Path / White Wolf’s “Chronicles of Darkness” base rule book also does a good job of this, since they’re playing (mostly) regular humans. However, that system doesn’t really have a beginner’s set. I’ll have to give CoC a look. Which is weird; I’ve been GMing since 2000, I’ve always known CoC was a game that exists, but I’ve never looked at it. I always assumed you needed to really know the Cthulhu Mythos, but thanks to your book I now know I don’t need much of ANY knowledge of it and might be better for it!

I recommend getting the books directly from Chaosium, as they include the PDFs for free when you buy the physical media.

100% agree with all you,ve said in this vid Lee. Would also add to this : Delta Green; perhaps even more familiar - the modern era, pitched with an X Files angle. Love COC & DG ; great antidotes to the high fantasy horseshit of D&D! ( subtle dig I know)

yeah more RP and story focused games like CoC ,VtM,ect.. are really best for new players mainly because those games don't call for as many dice rolls as D&D does but D&D is still a good starting place but CoC and VtM have more a rules light approach and that makes them easy to teach :)

I am sooooo agree with you. This is why I'm starting with this game before D&D

Great video, I have a lot of success with COC to get people interested in the hobby. One of which is my girlfriend who wasn't digging D&D. You are right on the money getting with introducing simple rules and playing off of familiarity with supernatural and crime show trends. Keep up the great work and I look for the next one.

My wife too prefers Call of Cthulhu to d&d. Though she makes the exception at the Adventures in Middle Earth setting which she is about to run.

I totaly agree with how he would introduce a CoC game. And it does not have to involve the Big Squid, it just has to bee a good fun horror

Call of cathulu or the Basic Role Playing rules. And yes I agree that D&D is not the best introduction to RPG> Depending on age group and familiarity with the genera the are LOTS of game out now that are better as intro to the Hobby. Most people just automatically start with D&D because of ease, popularity and the fact it's been around the longest. Most people just walk in and go "I want to play D&D"...Especially post Stranger things and CR... Basic Role Playing the core engine of CoC is a great system that you can run most genres in..

My two go to games for new players are Call of Cthulhu and Hollow Earth Expedition. I totally agree with your reasoning for Call of Cthulhu but if I've got players who aren't in to horror then again using the "real" world and going for Indiana Jones punching Nazis and feeding them to dinosaurs is generally an easy sell. Taking a mystery that they can investigate and introducing the fantastic elements as a surprise to their characters has many of the same benefits as you mention for Call of Cthulhu.

I hadn't considered Hollow Earth Expedition, but you're right it would be a great starting point.
Funny how I missed it when it was the first RPG my wife played

I think you make a very strong case for CoC. It's a great game as a beginner or veteran. One of the best ever imo.
I have been watching some of your older vids and am wondering where you have taken Zweihander? (You mention it in passing in this vid.)

Agreed, it makes a lot of sense but I’d prob set the game in a GrimDark fantasy setting and let them discover the elements that are typically found in D&D ... maybe a Salem type witch hunt or a murder investigation in a noble house akin to Game of thrones... let them be surprised by magic, seeing a dwarf or elf for the first time ... using the CoC rules but an older darker setting

Hm, I think you're right, well done, I'm persuaded. Id go so far as to say, D&D is perfect for 12 year olds as an intro, and CoC is stronger for mainstream adults and late teens (generally). There will always be exceptions.

  • @questwise4077

I think for me, playing an investigator in CoC, is much easier to convey to me players as they are creating 'normal' people. It's harder to grasp the concept of a 7 foot tall Dragonborn with the ability to breath fire and has infra vision, etc. than to present a history professor who hails from Cambridge University. I also find the d100 system of CoC to be much more intuitive. It's easier to visualize a climbing skill of 60%, than to try and explain how Armor Class works in conjunction with combat skills and proficiency modifiers, etc. Good call, sir. CoC for the win. Game on!

To be honest I don't think that the Call of Cthulhu RPG is even the best game for just Cthulhu related games, there have been so many other games that handle the mythos or insanity or horror much better. And no, I don't think horror is the best genre to introduce new players, especially younger ones, and to topic of insanity is in my opinion something that is better for people who are already familiar with how the hobby works and can be even then quite challenging for many players.

    • @YourHumbleGameMaster
      @YourHumbleGameMaster  4 роки тому

Yeah I admit might not be the best Introduction for younger people which might be a topic in itself

Speaking as a psychologist who has worked with children for 25 years, and someone who has run games for kids for many years too, I have to say that horror is a perfectly acceptable genre for RPGs for kids, and even perfectly acceptable as the genre to bring them in to the hobby.
Many children's books, shows, movies, comics, etc. are horror-themed... Scooby Doo is a classic example, and with many of the Scooby Doo feature lengths over the past 22 years (Since Zombie Island), the monsters haven't been men in masks, but actual supernatural threats. Also, look at fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and mythology, all of which children are exposed to from a young age.

@@thelastmotel I certainly remember my share of horror from my childhood- scaring myself half to death with ghost stories and the like!
