Tye mechanics make it easier to learn. There arent feats or special abilities (until you get into spells later)that new players need to remember. Great video.

Mechanics are actually really good, but again D&D monster kills another IP. There would be far more games thriving if D&D had died like it was suppose to at 4E. Pathfinder 2E is another rendition of that horrid system by Logan Bonner. AND yet is likley the 3rd best selling game. But if you go look at people who have played some a lot of PF2 (and not cody) the math is so tight it breaks the game. You have to use all the mechanics RAW or it breaks super easy. The Dark Eye feels a lot looser, not freeform by any means, but easier to homebrew within the aventuria setting. Char creation is more like Rolemaster or Runequest. Lots of skills and buying advantages and disadvantages. With a little thought the profession can be modified fairly easily.

I like a game that has enough in the basic book. I also prefer a game to be playable with a single book, not a players' guide, GMs' guide & world book or monster book. If that basic book gives me enough to run with on my own, I'm happy. However, I absolutely LOVE "splat-books" that dive deeper into the lore. Fading Suns is a prime example. I thought the basic book was enough to get started. If I'd never picked up another, and was up for a bunch of my own world building (I typically am), I could run a campaign with just that book. However, I really enjoyed reading each new volume of expanded setting and lore as they came out. Did I NEED them? No. But I liked having them. Heck, I still did a lot of my own world-building anyway, because I have a tendency to throw out any canon that I'm not at least like 95% onboard with. Where I do run in to frustration is with games that have some kind of "meta-plot." Fading Suns being one of those. They released two out of three books in their War in Heaven series, which were meant to set up all the factions in their giant plot, including the return (maybe?) of the Annunaki. Except, the third and arguably most important book didn't come out. Almost 30 years and at least two editions later, and it still hasn't come out as far as I know. Cyberpunk 2020 had a similar thing, if I'm remembering right. It's metaplot of the next Corp War was left hanging. I guess it's been wrapped up with Cyberpunk Red, but I'm pretty sure you were supposed to be able to play through it, originally. I think it's why I'm not usually a big fan of metaplot campaigns. Though of course, that may vary by game. After all, that's what the Great Pendragon Campaign is, and I'm still very interested in that. With Fading Suns, the first two books in their War in Heaven also served as sourcebooks, so they were still useful. But again, not getting the Annunaki sourcebook, even if I was going to jettison the meta-plot in my own game (I likely would have), was frustrating. Could I make up my own background for them? Yes. And I did. I ran a two year campaign back around the turn of the century. But I wanted to see what their take on it was going to be.

I bought it, but when I realized that my beginning character would be favored against a wight, I realized it's going to require a lot of hacking to get something that looks like balance. You need to give your NPCs professions to compete against PCs. PCs being able to add 6 to the base combat skill from the start is too much, too soon compared to a base human, orc, goblin, dwarf, etc. Consider everything in the creature section to be babies or novices and scale up. I use the Warhammer FRP 1e mana pool system instead of using stamina to cast magic.

One of the things I've noticed is that it kinda seems to be relying a tiny bit on grabbing the bestiary and Aventuria Almanac to get a full picture of the world. I am likely just going to be doing a homebrew game myself... Since I'm not sure if I'd change the world itself... though the idea of the world changing outside the players' purview is kinda cool.

I’ve only seen the starter set but it’s not that bad, combat is pretty streamlined and not too crunchy, it’s got a bunch of references and you can just pull out some things (like corruption, which only really applies to role playing), it’s harder than dnd 5e but softer than Shadowrun or pathfinder.

Honestly, I don't really feel like the battle game and rpg settings are that hard to reconsile. It's just a question "where" in the universe it is set. WHFB deals with millitary conflict, lords and generals on the front lines. Naturally this represents an amalgamation of these larger than life characters as they are naturallly drawn to regional (and above) conflicts. The RPG on the other hands deals with civilan life on the streets and roads, behind the front lines. Here the big concerns of the martial elite don't factor in as much as what plagues the everyman. As Karl Franz is smashing the next big WAAAGH coming over Blackfire Pass, with all the concentration of power that entails, people on the streets of Altdorf naturally have to deal with more creeping and hidden threads. Not every group of Beastmen is the Warherd of the One-Eye and most Greenskins encountered by the people of the empire are small raiding parties of forest gobbos. Chaos naturally takes the form of both subtle infiltration and ravaging hordes, both explored in different games. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the subtle and big can appear in the same setting, just in different contexts (locations, time, social sphere,...)

Been eyeballing this game recently and very much unsure if I should get it -- it does sound really great, though it's more free-flowing nature and minimalized danger/failure makes it seem quite akin to Fate by with a thematic focus and an existent setting. And I don't know that that's a bad thing except that I already have Fate and have gotten pretty darn comfortable with it... I don't know, I could go either way. One member of my standard gaming group has a low-key obsession with pirates, though I think they would prefer some more grit. Which is probably possible to work into the game depending on how you implement some things... maybe? ... I'll probably get it at some point, just not sure when. Meanwhile, the "yuck, forced adversity" folks are generally people you want to stay away from. Since even historically there was more diversity than is popularly accepted and depicted for most of the modern age, and _most_ European people weren't considered "white" for the majority of history. Including the Irish and the Nordic people, folks with incredibly pale skin tones but generally disliked or outright hated by the wealthy Anglos in Britain

IIRC the German name was literally just chosen because it sounded mysterious and cool. (Das schwarze Auge in German sounds a bit cooler than the dark eye in English, at least to me). I believe the actual dark eyes in the world were only invented later to give context to the name.
