WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE
Hello, It appears you’re back, why?
I've been listening to a load of the Magnus Archives so I need to run this for my friends
I just rode in on the algorithm. I haven't played CoC in like 30 years. Nice synopsis. 🤘
I was planning on making a dnd campaign and my friend said it would be better to have it be call of cthulu instead of dnd,, I didnt know wtf call of cthulu was so I came here
BAN SSSNIPERWOLF
“My character is wearing a Hawaiian Shirt”
A sentence that strikes terror into the heart of every GM who has heard the tale of Old Man Henderson.
Where are my GNOMES!!!!
Even in a world where everyone is just an ordinary person there are those exceptional few who stand above the rest, but above even them stands Henderson, the god slayer.
Even I know old man Hendo and I never played this
MUCKLED DAMN CULTISTS! 'AIR EH NAMBLIES KEEPIN MAH WEE MEN?!
The Hawaiian Shirt part isn't as terrifying for most that I've encountered, most that I know can counter a Henderson easily enough.
Davvy: *Does somthing other than DND*
His Audience: *Frantically rolling sanity check*

How people aren’t sick of DnD and ready for *any other ttrpg* is beyond me
"... and if I talked about every book, we´d be here all day."
Do you really think I´m going anywhere?
I remember my first time running CoC, they spent 30 minutes arguing over the quality of 1920s jams.
As in canned fruit spreads or as in music?
@@jf2801 canned fruit spreads.
Sounds like the best campaign ever
Would have been funny if some old one showed up to join the argument
only 30? fast TTRPG convo "argument"
Ms Frizzle is no ordinary teacher, she is either a Time Lord, whatever Mary Poppin's race is, or a child of both
Or
Both of them are Time Lords, along with Nanny McPhee.
Mary Poppins could be a time lord too, for all we know. She doesn't age and has a mundane object that's bigger on the inside, after all.
@@GalvatronRodimus another theory I have found is Mary Poppins and Ms Frizzle are the same person, just different regenerations
@@GamingRabbit17 There's a thought.
Now that's a fanfic
@@GamingRabbit17 So where does Nanny McFee come into play?
My first character was a paranoid professor of history. He’d stumbled across the existence of the old ones in his research and started sleeping with a shotgun under his bed.
Good times 🙂
@Guess What Animation 1:16 it helps, sometimes...if you take the route this guy does, which, like, a lot of people usually would do some variation, I imagine. 😂
I slept in the closet, with a manikin in the bed. Lol
"Man, does anyone ever win at this game?
"
"You don't win. You just do a little better each time."
There's exactly one person who ever won, his name is Old Man Henderson
How to know you're winning at Call of Cthulhu:
Are you at least partially alive? Undeath does not count.
Do you still have freedom? Not locked in dungeon, jail, a basement, or most likely turn of the century sanitorium.
Do you still have control of your character and its thoughts? This is harder than you might think, what ever you do don't let the fish-man show you his family photos.
If you can still answer "yes" in a human language to all three of these questions you are not loosing... yet.
Fun game though.
"[Lovecraft] was also frightened of invertebrates, marine life in general, temperatures below freezing, fat people, people of other races, race-mixing, slums, percussion instruments, caves, cellars, old age, great expanses of time, monumental architecture, non-Euclidean geometry, deserts, oceans, rats, dogs, the New England countryside, New York City, fungi and molds, viscous substances, medical experiments, dreams, brittle textures, gelatinous textures, the color gray, plant life of diverse sorts, memory lapses, old books, heredity, mists, gases, whistling, whispering-the things that did not frighten him would probably make a shorter list."
Yeah the guy did not have a very good life... Also on that note I wonder if he had schizophrenia or another mental disorder as from what I recall he got progressively more paranoid throughout his life.
You forgot nonvisible light!
@@shanewebb3341 yeah many psychologist debate over the fact if he had some mental dissabilities. Most agree that he probably had one, but most discuss which one.
No wonder he imagined a world full of eldritch horrors.
@@Answerisequal42 the real question is: why limited him to only one mental disability ?
3:09 its interesting to think about how "when would you wanna kill another person" is barely given a thought in D&D but here in CoC it's the moment a character is gonna start the downward slide into madness
All CoC, when you want to teach players what "backup characters" are.
Yea then send in the backups and have them stumble across the corpses of the first team
No, that's Paranoia, where every character automatically starts with 4 identical back up characters.
Also know as fun time for game masters. Can be fun for the players too if they don't take things like death by silly circumstances seriously.
I literally bought this game yesterday out of a sheer whim and Davvy puts out a video on it. Just amazing luck honestly
Unfortunately you've now used all your good luck, so don't expect your automobile to start when you're trying to escape from cultists
There is no luck, only the will of the outer gods
Where can i buy the game can you send the link
@@unknown-ib2wc most game stores will have it. I think it's currently the 2nd most popular ttrpg after DnD. Or you could buy direct from Chaosium.
My comment has two purposes:
1. Boost the algorithm. All hail the algorithm.
2. Give Davvy encouragement as he branches out from solely D&D stuff. Good job Davvy! You can do it!
*eldrich chanting to the algorithm*
The closest I've come to playing CoC is Earthbound. it's a mostly lighthearted game that gets darker as the story progresses and the big bad is literally eldritch horror.
shit, now i want to DM an earthbound-inspired CoC campaign
...wait isn't that just Stranger Things
Amen 🙏
Closest for me was darkest dungeon.
Corruption of Champions
World of Horror comes pretty close now too.
So ... i can play .. A stoner electrictian with a supernatural encyclopedia of every scifi and fantasy creatures... Aka Me .. hahaha
Old man Henderson is a thing, so yeah you probably can
I'm playing a progressive but weirdly religous pig farmer. Shes fun and one of the party's best members!
i always feel its more fun to roleplay someone new rather than have my character roleplay as me
Played it recently. Got my players PRing well which translated well to DnD, like a breath of new life they started focusing on the RP rather than the combat all the time
Yea even doing a small campaign can exponentially improve the rp potential of most “it’s a like a video game” D&D players. The fact that they can’t blunt force trauma their way through problems is always nice.
@@alizard7617 Yeah, really is a nice chance FOR SHOW LIZARD BRO
The investigation aspect really brings out a new side when you go back to D&D if they get a quest to kill a monster or bandit leader they'll actually start asking around town what they know about it
As someone who has been playing in a group for almost two years now, including having gone through the campaign "Terror on the Orient Express", this game is great for anyone who wants a mystery focused horror adventure. Especially one where negotiating information out of the NPCs you meet is just as important as fighting monsters.
And for those interested in the game but not the time period, there's rules for the modern day and the 1800s in the books, as well as numerous first and third party time period books. Invictus is set in the Roman Empire, Dark ages the early medieval, Achtung! Cthulhu for the second world war... And while technically not a Call of Cthulhu game anymore, Delta Green combines espionage thriller and the mythos together.
You played throug all 6 books of "Terror of the orient express?" your GM is a madman and clearly botched all his SAN checks :P
Ooh, there's also the World War Cthulhu line from Cubicle 7. Another, seperate take on Weird War 2
CoC has THE ROMAN EMPIRE?
I NEED TO GIT THAT SHIT
@@wingnoot338 its called cuthulu invictus
Don't forget pulp Cthulhu, which is essentially classic Cthulhu but you can get away with more outlandish stuff
Since its not a dnd video, Ima comment to help this go further. Always behind a creator going for more variety content.
Call of Cthulhu also know as Alex Jones simulator.
DAGON'S TURNING THE FROGS GAY
DEMONS!
This time, the frogs turn you gay
"THEY'RE PUTTING CHEMICALS IN THE WATER TO MAKE THE TENTACLE MONSTERS GAY!" - Alex Jones, Earth 2732
@@halfofapicture that's just Japan, false alarm
The first CoC character I rolled was a Socialist Reporter, who basically ran his own Labor Paper with Enquirer characteristics.
CoC has stats for Vampires, Werewolves, Mummies & stuff, so you CAN play X-Files.
after writing this, I wanna play in a solo feds X-Files-style CoC game.
Delta Green sounds right up your alley then! Either the old supplements for CoC or the new stand-alone system that I haven't gotten the chance to look at, DG is a great setting for screwing around with your players!
As someone who's played this game the one piece of advice I can offer is this. Do not fight! If you find yourself in a combat encounter, either run or force whatever you're fighting to flee.
They said pocket sand was “a dumb idea that would never work”. the amount of times that character lived another day due to sand-blinded cultists and other stuff is too many to count
@@alizard7617 the nice thing about fighting things with too many eyes is that it's really hard to miss when you mace them.
My party fights a decent amount and we lived. But I guess it's more never get into a fight unprepared. Use gorilla warefare. Take out lone monsters, use stealth and when all else fails through 5 sticks of dinomight at a really scary monster and run. (It came back to life but we killed it for a bit)
Cthulhu is very much a "run away to fight another day" sort of game. Difficult to grasp if you're used to dungeon crawling!
Or play a Pulp Cthulhu campaign. Turns mystery horror into Indiana Jones (Pulp Cthulhu is a sourcebook for Call of Cthulhu with rules to tweak your game.)
I've heard this game is perfect for one-shots where the players aren't expected to survive XD
Are players ever meant to survive any one-shot in any system?
@@jonathanmarth6426 Dependinds on the players. And if the GM is a sadist or not.
@@claytonsills2099 Yeah, of course, I was mostly memeing here. I haven't ran a whole lot of one-shots so far but up to now all the PCs always survived cause I'm still struggling with the hard but fair "If they play it well, there isn't going to be any bodies" balancing cause in a campaign unlike a one-shot I usually take care not to kill a character unless they picked a very stupid fight or got so unlucky that having them survive would shatter any suspension of disbelief.
@@jonathanmarth6426 No worries hermano. I was kidding, myself. Tbh, I do the same stuff and I've been running various games for about 3 years. Though, my biggest problem running is usually just getting caught up in the semi dark settings I seem to just spew forth, and my desire to just do crap that I find funny. Fortunately my group seems to enjoy most of my games though. But, I 100% understand what you mean.
"If you live, you did it wrong!" lol
Respect you Elders....
And their Sign.
As for killing other people... Really.
Oh yea, cultists usually count as people.
Cultists? People? Your one silly billy
... My COC party has killed many cultists, quite a few gang members. Killing cultists is pretty normal
@@evandugas7888 Exactly. The massacreing of culties should be encouraged
@@LainVics Until a cult forms around your party. You protect those ones.
@@evandugas7888 As long as a cult doesn't harm civvies or eat babies or enable vile things, theyr mostly fine
Alright
So while D&D might be more combat focused and what you can do in combat
Call of Cthulhu is more focused on mystery solving and what you can do to uncover mysteries
You sound so much more excited and invested to do this video. It's like old Davvy's back. I'm really glad you decided to do this.
Just don't mind the funny van full of surveillance equipment following your CoC players, that's another handbook.
I miss playing this so much. I was a silent film actress who was extremely good at using a shotgun and even better at charming men into giving us info. It was so much fun
I skimmed over the first sentence and was very confused about the second before realizing you were talking about your character.
One character I still remember playing along side, a oil and rail nepo baby, "My power, is Shopping!". Lol
Im GMing this right now and we’re doing every era from Wild West to modern-ish day (like early 2010s) it’s a JoJo type beat cause there’s always one character/character’s family connecting the eras together, plus I get to mix up the soundtrack a bunch
Now I gotta know what characters your party are playing as 😀
@@randomguy6679 so we’ve got a Pinkerton agent who’s full name is Luigi Luigi Luigi
A civil war veteran with a Gatling gun
A traveling merchant/scammer
And a guy who almost got his full medical license at Miskatonic and then dipped
@@alizard7617 luigi luigi luigi, think we found the Jojo character XD
@@randomguy6679 yes
That... Is the single greatest campaign concept I've ever heard of.
I just finished runninga D&D campaign for my group and we are planning on going into one shots and new systems now. THIS looks exciting!
Finally someone covers call of cthulhu. The tears of joy of a CoC GM bless you
The fact that you gave the basic play along with the rules and its difference to D&D in less than 10 mins is impressive. It also makes me miss my old CoC group. Such a fun game.
"this game is best played with as little knowledge on hp lovecraft as possible"
me, who hasnt even been in the same room as a book since highschool: "i am killing it rn"
I'd say i like CoC, but that would be an understatement.
Thank you for this, Daddy Chappy
Ah yes. The "5 character death in a session" game my GM told me about.
Kinda want to play it
5 character deaths a session is... a bit much, but yeah, dying in Call of Cthulhu happens, especially when you're not careful as a player.
Sounds more like Paranoia death rates... wait no that's low for a 5 player session of Paranoia.
The Most I've heard of for Deaths per session in CoC was four... And that was during Old Man Henderson's reign of terror.
Great rundown! I'm a big big fan of call of cthulhu. One thing that I think it does well is that, if you're an inexperienced GM (known in the game as Keeper of Arcane Lore) it's relatively easy to make stuff up if you have a general knowledge of the rules and a familiarity with the setting. My first ever game that I ran as GM was call of cthulhu and I forgot to print the stat sheet for a dude who resurrected himself through arcane forces but was still able to approximate a decently difficult battle scene based on generic combat rules and what I knew about the world.
It's also great for trying character builds you might not expect to work. My friend really wanted to have a high "library use" stat, so we made him a librarian and it surprisingly came in super handy when he had to dig through some old county records while his cohorts distracted the other people in the room
I'm curious. What's the longest campaign anyone has ever run without getting everyone killed?
you'd be surprised at how long it can take for an investigator to die if the player's either careful, paranoid, or cowardly enough
So far, my character has shot people for so much as having glowing eyes, part out of being near damn insane, also part of being paranoid as fuck, as the last time he didn't shoot, he got fuckin stabbed, repeatedly.
If it's weird, has glowing eyes, any extra appendages of any sort, and has a semi standoffish posture or is slightly aggressive, it's free game. If bullets don't work, well fuck, it was a nice run.
Me and my party have been playing for months. That being said our keeper has mercy and we are a very careful party. Tips to staying alive. Always arm yourself before walking through a door. A prepared gun is a good gun. Always run when things get over the top. None of our party members have died. Technically the keeper showed mercy and let some of our OC recover from zero sanity. But no deaths.
@@evandugas7888 0 san? that aint mercy really, that is straight up resurrection lol!
@@comrademaxim3929 Hmm one of the players lost it. And in COC zero sanity should not be bounced back on. He was very nice. I also think it's due to the fact he is going for a overarching story in a game system that is... brutal
But does this game let you see "Colors-unlike-any-seen-on-earth"?
"The Color from Outer Space" is hilariously an actual stat block creature in this, so yes. Also, if that was an Overly Sarcastic Productions reference, then I salute you.
Yes, and it also allows you to clip through the not!non-Euclidean geometry, if you're lucky enough
Yes, but your not going to stay sane looking at things like that.
@@jlokison Can't raise Cthulhu Mythos without lowering max sanity let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Thank you for covering this! Absolutely love the CoC system. My regular D&D group branched out into it a while ago and it's honestly super fun!
Would love to see more Cthulhu content! A huge fan of the game and this video was a nice surprise!
I also love how Call of Cthulhu lets you also play an SCP Game as well. The in between for classic lovecraft and pulp action. You may die, but you are way more likely to be able to push the hand of doomsday with actual importance
I love this. Please do more Call of Cthulhu videos! I want to be a keeper, and your vids are really insightful to how games could be played in a fun way.
The amount of information you pack into this short video is astonishing. Tbh, I wish more UA-camrs had your talent for speed talking and brevity.
Just popped in to say it's awesome that you're introducing D&D crowd to other games, keep at it! I think you're telling people just enough to get them interested and explore, and that's the most important - for the short time of the video you're very informative.
This is one of my favorites omg I’m so glad you did a video on this!!!!
Here I am sitting here, WANTING to play it, but my friends are stuck in the “but why not just make it D&D” phase. I wanna try other systems!!!!!!
CoC is a much better roleplaying system than D&D. Maybe you could try a one shot first.
My favorite game of all time! I just found your channel and I'm enjoying it immensely!
Loved the video, been trying to find a way to convince friends to try this system out. This video might just do it!
I haven't played this game before, looked at it, or seen any podcasts of it, but I've definitely heard of it. I enjoy the format for sure, and I'd be willing to play a game of it! I appreciate you solidifying that sentiment in me!
Great video, nice format too. I would like to see you create an example of scene or situation that plays out in game when you do other ones. Keep up!
Yey, the series begins! I’m looking forward to the others, and it was a ton of fun hearing about CoC in the relaxed happy voice of davvy
This was an awesome overview! I’m down for you getting more in depth with it as well!
I'm going to run my first CoC7e game next weekend! So glad you did this video, gonna suggest my players watch it!
Great summary. Somehow your really captured the vibe of this game too. I use this video to introduce friends to the game when I am about to run a session.
I’ve actually always wanted to play this!
Epic video! Thanks!
This is a pretty cool format. I would enjoy hearing about other RPG game systems form you!
Literally been waiting to play this. Thanks Davvy
Can't wait for more of these sorts of formatted videos. I completely agree with your Stop Playing DnD video and I've been feverishly looking for new systems like Shadowrun, WoD, and others. I'm excited to potentially learn about more systems as you teach us about them.
I've wanted this for so long. Thank you for giving it to me.
Loved the video! I would love a video on some of the prominent occupations for inspiration
I liked it very much. Hope the world of Darkness stuff comes up always found that intriguing
Love this! We are currently experimenting with Pathfinder in my group and I've wanted to try CoC and Blades too.
Sweet! Call of Cthulhu is a classic. Hope you keep this series going. D&D is great of course, but there's a whole world of RPG's to introduce people to. Great video!
That was a very good rundown of character creation. I will be using this when my group switches to CoC. Thank you.
Love the video big guy, COC never inspired me before but hearing you talk about it makes me think of a campaign where the players are an MTF from the SCP foundation
Really digging the non-D&D content. And this is a FANTASTIC rundown of CoC. I'd love to see some tips about running it in a future video? Just like how you like to build the sense of dread and horror in sessions.
Thanks! I'll soon be starting my first ever game of CoCth, this was a great intro to the world an mechanics 🙂
I’m a big fan of this! I fully intend to run other games but the plethora of 5e UA-cam content makes it so much easier to learn and keep track of.
P.S. Please do Mutants and masterminds or 40k next
This was fantastic! I'd love to see OVA covered in the future!
I love all the art you've picked out for this.
YESSS THANK YOU IVE BEEN WANTING TO PLAY COC AND THIS MAKES IT SO MUCH MORE SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND
Loved this video! I would love it if you covered Through the Breach! It's great fun
This was rlly great! I'd heard of call of cthulhu before but I didn't know anything about it other than ~~~tEnTaCleS~~~ Also I love how you're branching out into more rpgs than just dnd cus it's rlly interesting to see how other systems work
well, there's a reason why it's the most popular RPG in Japan.
Excellent guide. Eagre to see how the expanded list of talking topics pans out.
Great vid! Really hope you’ll bring Vampire the Masquerade next!
“Go into Call of Cthulhu without reading Lovecraft” is the best advice you can give honestly. I’ve tried reading it and wish I had just stuck to watching Lovecraft Country...
Thanks for the video. I was seriously considering picking up the rulebook for this.
I think you have convinced me that I want to play this! Thank you!
I find one-shoot of CoC really fun to do. Also, good you mention the pulp ruleset. I really like the pulp rule.
Just wanted to say I really appreciated this, C of C is not my jam, but you really explained it in a fun and informative way, so that I at least have a base level of knowledge about it if ever I do need
I love the HP system in Call of Cthulhu, I’m so glad you’re covering it :)))
Love this game. Glad you covered it.
I am so excited to start playing this game. I love how you are improving in your skills, but at the same time you are slowly losing your mind.
Thanks for making this video!! I kind of want to start running this to get my friends into it. I remember wanting to have a campaign with a very similar setting to this game. Idk why it never occurred to me that maybe dnd just wasn’t fit for modern-day campaigns lol
Thanks for the great synopsis of this!
I can't wait for Wraith the oblivion to be covered!! These are great
I didn't know anything about Call going into this video. Now, I know a little bit more. This feels like a good enough primer to know what to expect, without outright telling you how to play. I think it's good for the new system videos you plan to release.
I love this new series! It's interesting to hear about other games; I grew up on many tabletop roleplaying games but DnD, so it's fun to see them again!
Though, I think the technical runthrough of how the system works isn't necessary; I would rather hear a summary of the game feels to play, what makes it unique and what may the largest obstacles to get to play it with your friends. I can always do my research later if I like what I hear, you know?
I hope Changeling the lost gets a video like, this, wanted to play for awhile, but no idea how t, and nothing to help show my friends why it would be fun.
I'm glad this is ur fav it is mine, across several editions
I like the gambling stakes of pushing a failed roll. Either the second one works or something truly awful and memorable happens. Either way it is interesting.
Call of Cthulhu exemplifies the Three Laws of Cthulhu. 1. You can't win. 2. You can't even break even. 3. And once you know about the Mythos, you can't drop out of the game.
Really looking forward to your Pathfinder vid if/when you make it.
Love your video :) thank you I'm trying to get my group in coc so i shared this. Also i very much forgot about the cats name until you brought it up :P
I only got to play Call of Cthulhu once, resulting in my arm being broken and my investigation partner killing our client before breaking her neck on the stairs.
It was a fun game
I like this new format!
I love Call of Cthulhu, I've been planning a wild west campaign for a little while now
I'm not really sure exactly what I just watched but I thoroughly enjoyed it because of your upbeat, articulate, cute and sincere personality. 2 thumbs way up.
I ran one half of one of the premade sessions, one character almost died in an avoidable combat (I did a thing where a great old one reached out and let her live if she gave away a chunk of her sanity), and tbh it really made me wan to DM more, even though I was really burnt out from DMing 5e, I would recommend every DM or just anyone at least try DMing this once, it's really unique and refreshing
DMing Call of Cthulhu is the funniest thing. You can torture your players and they love it.
