Had the rear air spring go out on my '08 GL320 CDI. Found the part on amazon with good reviews and installed yesterday after I got home from work. Took me less than an hour for the non-mechanic type guy I am. This video was great and walked me through every step of the way. Thank you!
Thanks, just did the rear right on my 2013 E550 and am about to do the rear left following your video. I believe it is a mistake to remove the brass fitting of the new air bag - they are factory-adjusted, all you need do is to pull out the little white plastic end cap, then directly push the air hose into the fitting of the new bag.
Very informative video! Thank you..I now feel more confident in buying a used GL450 knowing that I can replace the problematic air shocks if the need shall arise..well It probably is not if but when!!
2010 gl 450 air suspension on all 4 sides are down...i check all fuses and relay are good...i change the pump also...the Benz wont let me communicate with the air suspension. When the past i used that scanner plenty of time to do work on the car...what should i be looking for
Thanks for this video! The vid makes it seem doable. Why does the fuse have to be removed to replace the airbag and shocks? What would happen if it was left?
You want to pull the fuse on the pump so the air flow will stop if not it will keep running possibly burning out the pump, The other option is just removing the battery cable however the fuse is much easier
Great video ! How much would each bag cost , how much would it cost to do this job Did not know MB had airbags (don't have one) MB or BMW witch one do you prefer
Great video. I did this job with the Arnott bags. They were shorter than the stock bags by half an inch, so there was a gap until I lowered the vehicle. I would go with the stock part if I had it to do over again. The Arnott instructions say don't remove the fitting from the new bag, but simply insert the tube into it. This avoids the possibility of over tightening the fitting in the plastic. Anyway, read the paper that comes in the box.
There are multiple warnings by Arnott NOT to remove the fitting, just like you said, you push the tube in and it will lock in. I did it for my car and it works flawlessly.
Installed both bags but doesn’t seem to hold the weight of the car when its lowered. About a 1 inch gab between tire and wheel well. The bags are inflated but im not sure its to the full potential. Any advice?
Peter Canizalez At the bottom of the airspring where it attaches to the street sometimes it will pop off. There is a clip or a clamp that goes around the bottom of the other boot double check that. Also I may require a scan tool l to clear everything and to operate the pump. Most the time is not needed but sometimes I have run across it
How to Automotive great video and thanks for the info! The bags are secured in the arms, the way there’s supposed to be. Have you ever experienced issues with the pump not inflating the bags fully? The bags feel solid (no give) but I’m not sure if it’s the pump/compressor causing it not to lift completely? I will look into the scan options as well, but thought id ask about the pump? Does the computer shut the compressor off if both bags are deflated/removed and need a reset? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get this solved!
I replaced Arnott rear springs last year. Put about 20K miles and they went bad gradually. Watching videos on UA-cam I purchased compressor, valve block and height sensors. I didn’t think air springs were bad at all. Arnott told me soap spray it take to pro shop to test them. I took it to a independent Mercedes service shop who has been serving MBs for 35 years said that all working fine except right rear height sensor was bad. I asked him if he soap tested the rear bags he said no, I was upset. Paid him $303 just for changing height sensor that I purchased on eBay. I drive off of shop and two miles down the road rear springs down to the floor again. I was very frustrated. So I changed compressor, valve block and relay tonight and nothing changed. Next, I will soap test it for air leaks. Do you have any recommendation what else I should test? I will purchase another set bags this week but I am very frustrated. Please help.
It was the rear sensors. I tried use e-bay sensors but I couldn’t install it correctly. I went MB dealer. They installed and recalibrated. It works fine. It cost me almost $1000. $400 for pair of sensors and + labor and bull shit fees.
@@batukilinch7754 thanks for the info. Yeah dealer price is high charged me almost 5K for two front airbags. Now my GL is sitting low on right rear corner with pump turning on frequently. Seems leaking air bag.
is this the same procedure for the front air spring? I don't find anything online showing the front without taking out the whole strut? I have a 2012 GL 450 and the drivers side front sags down after the car has been shut off a little while, but as soon as the car starts it fills up fine. All other wheels appear to be fine. I definately hear hissing under my hood regularly when we shut off the car. thanks
Hi Rick. I saw that you emailed me about your leaking air spring. On the front the air spring is built in to the strut and need to be replaced as one peace. He is a video link for replacing it. The video is on a GL 320 but it's the same as the GL 450. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching. ua-cam.com/video/5yW9OluhIHk/v-deo.html
I just replaced my front and rear bags along with the compressor but the rear bags aren’t inflating as high as before. I also didn’t clear any codes because none were showing. Could it be a valve block? The front is perfectly fine. Any thoughts?
NEVER pull that fitting out on the rear bag. You will likely cross thread it because it is plastic. Pull the old fitting off the line, pull the white retainer clip off of the new bag and insert the line in the new fitting.
I love my GL, but CANNOT STAND the airbag suspension....Whoever designed this systm is a fool! On such an expensive car, WHY on earth do I need to worry about my suspension popping, or the bag developing a leak! Never again will I go with a Mercedes because of this!
Thanks! I saw the kit on ebay! I think I am going to do it! Next problem is the (it hasnt happened yet, but I hear it will....) intake manifold plastic parts cracking....ugh. I cant believe such a nice car has these issues....Oh well.
The ride is far superior than that of traditional springs in mine (and everyone who rides in this SUV) opinion and this is pretty basic to replace. Every try using a spring compression tool? That literally can kill someone if not used correctly.

You are correct, that is the correct way to install the air line
Great video - takes the mystery out of the job - I am going to buy the airbag and fit asap

I thought this job was going to be a nightmare but it's actually straight forward, you don't have to tear to car down at all, really.

When you disconnect the lines the pump will run as you’re doing your repair.

The arnott rear airbags lasted 6 years 60k miles on my 2007 GL450, although they have a limited lifetime warranty

Peter Canizalez Yes just underneath the palm is a check valve that controls all for Springs. The seals dry out and they leak internally.

Because it's a wear item just like breaks and rotors. You want something with traditional springs? Get an under-engineered Asian car.
