- How To Replace Mercedes Rear Air Spring Suspension Bag on ML-Class W164 Vehicle.
In this video I show you how to replace the Rear Air Suspension Spring Bag on a Mercedes ML or GL vehicle. For the video I am using my 2011 Mercedes ML300 W164 which has a faulty leaking right rear air spring bag.
I am replacing it with an aftermarket new replacement Air Spring. You can purchase this from the following link:
Amazon (US and General): amzn.to/3KaNveV
Amazon (Australia): amzn.to/2RMtg1Y
What you will see is that I step by step show you how to do this procedure safely with minimal tools. The tools used in replacing the rear air spring are:
* 10mm Socket (Remove Air Line)
* Standard Mercedes Wheel Brace (To remove the wheel)
* Jack (To lift the car)
* Axle Standard (For additional safety!) - Авто та транспорт
Great Video Drew , part of the reason these ML164s are cheap is people are terrified of the air suspension. Thanks for giving us the confidence to tackle this
Thanks mate, I appreciate the support! Cheers Drew
Hi Drew, just letting you know that I successfully replaced the failed spring bag to my vehicle. Your instructions were perfect. Once again a big thank you for sharing your knowledge. Cheers, Kelvin
Awesome, good work Kevin! Cheers Drew
Hello Drew. Thanks for the video. Just a note on the white retaining clip. It screws off.
Hi Mate, thanks for the tip! Cheers Drew
God i love UA-cam. Saved me fortune thanks so much man
Hi Richard, that’s why I do this! I saved myself another few hundred dollars this weekend with a bit more Mercedes DIY … vid coming soon!! Cheers Drew

Thanks for the feedback. I am adopting this style deliberately to try to help as many people as I can do their own DIY! Cheers Drew
Great Video - will give it a go! London. Uk. Thanks!
Please do and let us know how you go! Cheers Drew
Nice video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers Drew
Thanks Drew. Great Aussie work mate. I agree. There are somethings you just dont need to do. I'll have a look at the cars history before i do the rears mate to see if the prev guy did anything, as he's kept every work and receipts for the car which is why i pick it up. I've only had my GL 500 x164 (06) for 6 months and I wish i got the car sooner. There a great car mate. Thanks for your previous advice on the front suspension. I purchased 2 front air bag springs on the aussie website that you gave me the link for.. Thanks heaps mate. Looking forward to your vidoes...
And thank you for making the effort to comment. It is genuinely a satisfying feeling knowing that you have helped someone :)
Make the procedure nice and easy! Great work. Thanks
Glad you liked it! Cheers Drew
@DrewFixIt I did the job, exactly the way you performed the steps and it's works very well. Thank you!
@@TheNavakhtar awesome! Hopefully one day I can make these videos full time :) Cheers Drew

@@DrewFixIt thank you 👊
Great, simple video. Thnx!
Hi, Glad it was helpful! Cheers Drew
Great video sir! Did you go with Oem or Arnott?
Hi Mate, I went with this one: amzn.to/3KaNveV It's held up really well so far! Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt Thank you!
Hey man, I’m currently looking for one of these, but I’m keen for the Off Road Pack version here in Australia. Are there any signs to show which ones come with the 2 speed transfer case and Airmatic suspension?
Hi Mofos, I'm not 100% sure, however I don't think there is any difference in the Air Springs between the vehicles with 2 speed transfer case the normal one. Thanks Drew
Hi Drew, Great video and clear instructions thanks. I have the same issue and need to replace the rear air suspension spring bag on my 2009 ML 300.Could you please let me know where I could purchase the air line fitting as well. I'm in OZ, WA.
Hi Kelvin, thanks for the feedback. Here is where you can buy a pair: amzn.to/3TOd0IB Note, the fittings will be supplied with the new air spring. Cheers Drew
Much appreciated, many thanks.
Need to do this repair on my ML, so this was a great video.. Thanks!!
Did you use original air bag?
Cheers from Norway
Hi Elton, I used the following aftermarket air bag: amzn.to/3KaNveV I have had no issues with these bags and also this link is for a pair and I would recommend buying both and doing both at the same time. As per the video it is really easy to do! Cheers Drew
Also, you can see all of the parts that I have used and recommend on my store at: www.drewfixit.com Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt Thanks for the links!
Tak!
No problems mate! Cheers Drew
Excellent videos 👍
I wonder how long this brand air spring lasts.
Hi Shawn, great question! These air springs have been on the rear of my car now for over 2 years now and I was wondering the same thing so I actually did a close inspection of them last weekend and they show absolutely no signs of wear. By comparison the original Mercedes air springs were visually rotted and cracked that I removed from the car. So from my perspective they are just as good if not better than the OEM Mercedes part! Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt Hi Drew, Thank you very much for your prompt reply and I feel so grateful for your detailed explanation with great pronunciation. I applaud your enthusiasm. Cheers Shawn
Drew where did you purchase the airbag I see them on eBay but wonder how good they would be?
Hi Brian, here is the link to where you can buy the airbag: amzn.to/3KaNveV Cheers Drew
Drew, how are these air springs holding up after 2 years. I’m about to do mine. Ordered the same ones you’ve used.
Hi Mark, there are no issues at all that I am aware of. Last time I serviced the car (around Christmas time) I took the rear wheels off to check the rear brakes and whilst I had the wheels off I deliberately checked the bags visually and they look really good with no visible signs of wear! Cheers Drew

Hey Drew, I have a "cloc cloc" noise at the back of my ML (w164) when I drive on non-even surfaces. Torsion bar and bar links have just been replaced. What can it be you think ?
Thanks for your expertise.
Hi Louis, how many kilometres or miles has your vehicle done? Have you considered that one of your rear struts may have failed? Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt 170 000 km. Yes you must be right. I'll change the rear struts and give you an update :)
Hey @DrewFixIt, can you advise what rear strut to install as replacement ? OEM refurbished are still expensive. Bilstein are expensive too. Chinese import are cheap.
@@plumerault Hi Louis, I have not yet done the rears on my car ... too many other things to fix first :) ... however, I put Chinese import on the front of my car and so far it seems to be good thus I would personally use something like: amzn.to/3Y7fMKQ Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt thanks for your answer. Ok I am doing it soon. I'll let you know. Seems difficult to free space around the screws in the trunk.
Is it the same for an R500 ? Thanks
Hi Mate, it is a slightly different part, however the procedure is virtually identical. Cheers Drew
Hi where is a good place I can purchase the rear air springs for a 2009 ML 300cdi w164? Thanks in advance.
Hi Moz, what country are you in mate? Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt Oz, S.A mate.
@@mozd9028 here’s a good deal to buy a pair(if one’s gone suggest doing them both) amzn.to/38hoBh6
Cheers mate. Appreciate it 👍
@@mozd9028 no problems, this is a pretty easy install, but do let us know how you go? Cheers Drew
Hello I have problem whit my Mercedes ml 320 2006 I live in England in Crewe can anyone recommend me a good mechanic ? To replace my rear air spring
Why don't you give it a go yourself? It is so easy you could do this on the side of the road with a normal car jack and one spanner! Let me know how you go? Cheers Drew
