How ironic that in the end the holy rosy herself “BEV” was a coward. She could not face the end with dignity and faith. Everyone was singing or praying and she was digging a hole to escape the consequences of her choices. Classic !
She was portrayed that way because she thought her "indoctrination" would give her salvation. You could say, she was the most devout which is why she had difficulty accepting her outcome. The other people made peace. It's a very deep movie with a lot of parallels.

@@mogtrader8 I also got the feeling she saw herself spiritally above everyone - to be saved. I was half expecting her to survive at the end was so releaved when she met her end and realised she was just like the others but the difference they have came to peace and acceptance and died together - she was ostracised and died alone and never repented for what she did.

That's what made me cry and when there voices just stopped at exactly the same time was chilling. her death was too quick
she showed herself to be a coward earlier when she hid and did not want the last death. When judgement comes people will be trying to dig not to face it.
I love how Erin clips the wings of the 'angel' as a nod to the moment when she had to clip the wings of the doves because her mother said to. Doves are also a religious symbol

I think the angel is an actual angel. We have no definitive proof what an "angel" looks like but with knowledge of the Bible, they can mirror a vampire. These are miracles, marking wrist and sacrificing self and blood to save others. That resembles Jesus and the miracles people believe in God hoping to have.
That bat just survives at the ending. 2 kids assume the bat couldn't survive if it flew like that. That makes me smile, because kids alway tell what they see, lacking of knowlege about everything, same with their life experience. So I think that big bat is still alive.

I thought one of the major themes in this show was the idea of a wolf in sheep clothing. In the final episode Paul even refers to them as wolves. Also the idea that religion can so easily be manipulated, Bev is constantly reciting bible verses and popular religious quotes to support whatever conclusion she believes to be right. In that way religion too can be seen as a wolf in sheep’s clothing if misinterpreted.

Bev’s character disgusted me and, in my opinion, is a representation of a false believer that uses and twists scripture to support their own selfish, egocentric interpretation that best supports their views…cherry-picking scripture and taking verses out of context to suit their needs. True Christians shouldn’t behave this way, but unfortunately as sinners, many do still do this. That’s why it’s so important to read the best translation possible that even offers deeper understanding and context of certain words in the way they were supposed to be understood in its original meaning, context, and understanding. Excellent show…I was hooked till the very end!

Riley’s end was the most beautiful and frightening things I’ve ever seen. The acting in this series was amazing.
It was beautiful but he was a coward which he admitted by telling Erin he isnt as strong as her. Cuz he couldve just told all that to her at her house and show proof with his hand exposed to the sun and then help them stop them. But nope
Nah, he did the best he could, prison hollowed him, he would've given in to the list and eaten folks. Only his parents were strong enough to join together to fight the urge

to the people who wonder why Riley killed himself:
he ultimately killed himself for a few reasons. in the show, Riley is most known for his guilt and his past alcoholism. He hadn't had a drink in years and his version of recovery was seeing his addiction as separate from himself so he could isolate it and control it. The guilt, on the other hand, was consuming him.
You can see, from the moment that Paul tells him the truth of being turned and when Riley nearly rips Bev's throat out (she would've deserved it 🤷🏻), he understands that he has to kill himself. Because to him, this is his addiction. Becoming a vampire where he would be unable to control his thirst would be his absolute worst nightmare, his personal hell. Losing control of himself was so frightening and repulsive that he would rather die. He also couldn't live with his guilt forever and he would have as a vampire. He would have lived forever consumed by his guilt and only watching it get worse as he was unable to control his thirst.
He saw a future where he would be in misery, where he has the very large potential to kill the people he loves, and decided that being dead was better than that. in a way, his suicide was holy.
Also so he could prove to Erin his story wasn't full of shit, which lead to her talking to Sarah, which lead to them beating the vampires

Yes it was, His death was beautiful, sacrificing himself for the reasons you said above and the kid that he killed was waiting for him with out stretched arms his sacrifice redeemed himself even though that's not what he was thinking. Then snapping back to the hard reality of him burning in that boat I believe he had gone by then. it was such a beautiful shoot. In the background i could hear screaming I have never felt that of thing the screams of fear and realizing he was speaking the truth but the carried on right through the titles finished me. Brilliant just brilliant
@Adam Cinq-Mars Yes I saw understood it that way plus other levels that's why I cried for him she forgave him and because he sacrificed his life he was welcomed home. I also feel that everyone on the island realized the truth that it was not a resurrection by God even the priest realized his mistake they all asked for forgiveness I like to think that they made it home except Bev. She never asked for forgiveness. She died too quick but she never went home.She will have to come back.
That is so interesting.
I think my favorite dialogue from the series was at the end of episode 6:
Bev (To Erin): "You could shoot me right now. It would mean I'm only five minutes behind-"
*Erin shoots her*
Erin (to the group of survivors): "we have five minutes."

The scene where Hassan prays for the last time with his son and falls down in his prayer and dies and his son place his hands over his dad's head comforting, while he burns away. Toke my breath away! It hit me Sooo hard!

Yep. Hassan was a good ass dude. And watching them force that on his son while he was held down was terrible. Almost worse than the dog's fate.

@@moxiemaxie3543 same with op, hassan's death took my breath away too. in islam, we called it "shaheed". the term can be applied to those who is killed while sacrificing their lives for God's cause. and to die as a shaheed is an honour. lots of muslims desire this title if they must die bcs of the great reward

For me it's the moment between Eddie and Annie. When they confirm that free will is still theirs and others are killing because they want to. That, and Hassan and Ali on the beach.
They gave into temptation which was their downfall.

@@hayleenicole9326 I mean they aren't wrong. The most compelling scene was the pta meeting. It shower both the standing up for religious freedom and also the suffocating of the sherriffs point by mass Christians.
The son made me upset. Father usually knows best but not according to stubborn Ali. On the flip side dad (sheriff) didn't belive in the beginning either. Both meeting their fate⚰🪦🔫☀️🔥
Mike Flanagan and Robert Eggers are completely redefining the "horror" genre, in my opinion.
Mike says "yeah it's a vampire story, but in the meantime I'm gonna talk about coping with guilt, the consequences of fanaticism, trauma, the afterlife, and of course alcoholism."
The part that absolutely broke me to tears was when Leeza confronted Joe, and then after, how Joe spoke at the AA meeting. That stuff just really hit home to me.
I like how he didn't dismiss religion as the scourge that some zealots have made it, but as a warning of what can happen when you use it as a weapon against others. At least that's how I see it. I'm no longer Catholic, but I was definitely reciting some of the parts of the mass along with the character.

Bev was the only one who seemed to dislike Hassan as Sheriff....the other townspeople did not seem to mind having a Muslim Sheriff...
@@dragonchr15 I think a lot of the townsfolk do harbor implicit resentment towards him, though. In the classroom scene when the Sherriff brought up mandatory bible issue and Bev lambasted him, nobody stood up for him and even the Scarboroughs seemed to look at him in disdain (except for Erin)

This show has a lot to unpack, for me personally. It's a sensitive topic but I think the show tackled religion quite well. It's especially interesting to me how the priest didn't feel any guilt for the death he caused, using faith to absolve himself. While Riley, refusing God, carries the burden himself right to the very end.
There'll never be peace as long religion keeps blinding people. Or dare I say, as long as there are religions
Priest is a human also.. which is sinful nature.. but he drink and false doctrine in the beginning in the movies that is actually harmful to his mind.. he tell sarah mom which he love, he did this because he love her when she sick and getting old.. and turn he was wrong

They don’t do a good job of tackling religion at all not at all 😂😂 but as a Christian I enjoyed the twist on biblical doctrines if it were mythology. There are no vampires or angles that can give you blood to live on in the Bible those two things totally break from any Abrahamic religion so the rest can just be entertainment
@@Berryations They did. This was a master piece bringing up the topic of death, which is common grounds for all religion. In essence this filmed used subjective interpretation of the bible amd roman theology and turned it into horror. No where does the bible ever describe how angels are supposed to look like, other than the fact that humans were not to be "fearful" of them. This was much like the allegory of the cave. We associate angels with what we see in the chapel, in art, because its depicted that way, much like Jesus and Mary. This film is really deep, if you were really into that kind of stuff.
when the sheriff decided to leave with his son and the devil popped out in the church with his robe was some of the scariest stuff ive seen , especiall having him walk the isle and everyine being pressured to drink the poison. Really taught me in times we need to be brave to stand out from the crowd when evryone is doing wrong we need to be brave and do whats right.
As a Christian, I absolutely love the portrayal of Bev. She’s your typical “holier than thou” Bible thumper who thinks she’s better because she served the church and etc, and believe me there are plenty of people who are like that the even the Bible has warned us about. The lesson the show presents such as the dogma of religion, not just Christianity/Catholicism specifically, is inherently evil and wrong, and that the religious figure tied to a religion would never endorse the lengths Bev made.
Just goes to show that religion itself can easily be distorted and used for something sinister rather than to save people from themselves and damnation. Muslim, Buddhist, atheist or Christian, we’re all imperfect human beings who are just trying to be better people.
Not so sure “ everybody” is trying to be “a better person.”
It was a really well done series although I hate how Christianity is portrayed again but it makes sense since many of the western Christians behave like Bev.

This wasn't a show of portrayal. This was way beyond that. It was about having people reflect on their own beliefs (Roman Theology) and to question their own beliefs. This was deep and a masterpiece because we never saw anything question main stream Christianity, certainly not with this quiver. We've seen stigmata, exorcisms, and plenty of good vs evil, but we've never seen anything re-interpret the bible in such manner.

Mike Flanagan secured his spot on my list of favorite writer/directors. His ability to tell stories, especially horror, in a limited series format is unmatched. The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass are some of the best installments to the horror genre I genuinely can’t wait to see what he does next

He also written and directed a lot of great horror movies! Like Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep

@@chrisedm13 I’ve actually seen all of those except for Before I Wake and I enjoyed them but his limited series are so much better in comparison and they give him the opportunity to show off his monologue writing ability and create a full, emotional, deep, multilayered horror story with really developed characters and tons of amazing details, each show exploring different themes and types of relationships (like how Hill House is about a family that’s grown apart as they got older, whereas Bly Manor is about a family being created between characters that aren’t related)
I agree! Loved this movie and the preacher (acting) along with the other characters was 🎯.
I like how they never showed Ali taking communion after his dad forbade him from doing so, so when Ali drinks the poison we weren’t sure whether he’d come back to life, but when he did it confirmed he’d disobeyed his father

This show was so great. The moment at the end when Erin combined her belief of the afterlife with Riley's made me cry so much. It was an absolutely beautiful interpretation of the inevitability a death but also the comfort of returning to where we all come from
How is it comforting to return to being nothing? You can never change the empty reality of a materialistic death view, no matter how you sugar coat it or decorate it with seemingly intelligent/scientific explanations. .

We’re just a form of energy, cells, molecules, atoms that’s also an ingredients from the universe we are the universe itself. When we die we only live in someone’s memory until that someone also dies and then there’s no one will remember us.

I like the abrupt silence when they were singing . Its mirrors how abrupt facing death can be. Its the same tactic infinity war did after they got snapped. The silence doesn't distract you from the horror and allows it to sink in. We're forced to hear our own thoughts
And that is why I sleep with my TV on, I never want to hear that silence. Scares the crap out of me.
😭😭😭 Riley's death scene was so BEAUTIFUL! The young teen he killed was waiting with forgiveness at the end and omg I'm crying again!
Yes, that was a Wow moment. I saw Riley as a Coward during the movie but I found it interesting that he told his girlfriend on the boat that he wasn't as strong as her. In my opinion I think he wanted to go (die🔥☀️) because the teen👻 and pain.
Favorite parts of this series:
-Hamish Linklater’s performance as Father Paul. Absolutely mesmerizing.
-Bev clawing and digging into the sand trying to hide from her fate
-Erin’s monologue about what she thinks happened to her baby.
-the sudden silence at the end when everyone who was singing caught fire
-the silent credits at the end except for the sound of water lapping against the rowboat
-Joe Collier and Leeza’s scene where she forgives him
-Riley’s death and him saying that he loved Erin and did his best.

@@Ananyaaaya I personally hated Leeza's speech "forgiving" Joe. She wasn't actually forgiving him ... she was tearing at his scars. I don't blame her ... she had worse scars. But I wasn't "touched" by it. I actually thought less of Leeza for it.
Linklater should have won a ton of awards for that performance. "Mesmerizing" is the perfect description. Amazing.
I've not seen anyone else mention this but I noticed a lot of the characters said 'I did my best' and it hit me hard because, as adults, we're all thinking we're doing our best but sometimes it's either not good enough or it's just completely wrong. Also, at the end of it all, does it matter? We do our best and then return to dust. It's just a line that got me pondering.
My favorite performance was from the actress who played Beverly Keane. She played the perfect religious zealot.
Absolutely. She didn't seem too cartoony at all and I was so relieved. She was very good at being exactly like SO many people ive met and exist out there

Halfway through I thought Bev should win an award for this role.

I find the sheriff's and his kid's death so touching. Earlier the sheriff said his wife prayed all the way to the end of her live, through her entire illness she did not lose faith, thus him being so hurt that Ali wanted to attend the Catholic church and stopped praying with him( as well as the fact that he was doing that giving in on the brainwashing adoctrination that Bev was pushing in the school). They both prayed all the way to the end, the sheriff gave in on his wounds mid prayer and Ali simply watched the sun come out one last time. One besides the other. Together.
I'm a raging atheist, but i see the appeal of religion for so people. The feeling of something major, something being orchestrated by a higher power can be calming for some people despite not believing the entire lore thing. The sheriff himself said he was not particularly religious, he was Muslim because of his wife and kind of carried it with him after her death as a way of reminiscing her or maybe because he ended up growing into it. It made him feel some kind of way, it could either be spiritual or personal but he did not leave religion aside.
The simple act of praying, meditating, is a very internal and personal thing. Those two doing it together as the last thing they would ever do joins them in a bond attached to the late mother of the kid.
I was already crying at that point but it absolutely shattered me.
Beautifully said. I came in to this show expecting one thing (a typical "religious horror" kind of affair) but at the end of it, I was genuinely surprised by the beauty and poignancy of the show.
Also, no lie - when Rahul Kohli (the sheriff) slumped over, I was a blubbering mess.
The father died? It just two shots of im not mistaken. I mean he maybe survived.
That is absolutely what it's all about believe me when I say this u nailed even from the outside looking in👍💯

This was the best rendition of having good intentions(even though we find out the selfish reasons at the end) and using religion to attain it.
This same concept can be used with politics as well.

@@sparrowhawke I thought the writing for the Muslim sheriff was great. His explanation against religion in school. Him trying to prove how American he was after 9/11 only to be suspected himself. Etc etc
The ending is an interesting mix of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion (Erin sacrifices herself; good triumphs over evil) plus Taoist (Erin's monologue about self being an illusion) plus Buddhist (true salvation is to die with peace and acceptance, which everyone on the island except Bev did).
Awesome point, it created and brought up a lot of thoughts about death and religion as a whole. The similarities are undoubtly across many religions.
I think it touches more on abrahamic religion. “One God” unites us all no matter what prophets you believe in.

I have a personal theory : the death of the priest Pruitt in his office.
Some say it was due to an overconcentration of the demon's blood in his body. But he died spitting a bloody foam, just like the dog that was poisonned. So I think it was Bev who poisoned him.
Episode 3 she saw the picture of him younger and seemed to realize who he is. Later, we see her putting a box of poison back in the closet, without knowing what she did with it. We also see her filling the priest's fridge with food she prepared. I think she wanted to test the miracle she understood of the priest being the Chosen One.
I thought the same thing when I saw that. Clearly, she decided to poison him but I don't get why. When she was at his house later, it seemed like Paul.was closer with her than a lot of other people, maybe because she works so much in he church. Maybe he had already told her who he really was and about the "angel" and she decided to test out a theory.
@@carter358 I think you are right. Makes total sense.Why would they even bother to put the scenes with Bev and the poison and her staring at the picture if it didn’t mean anything.
That makes sense logically except it doesn’t feel correct to the portrayal of her character. They even suggested subtlety that Bev was a little bit in love with Father Paul. The pain she expressed when he turned against her at the end, and the level of nastiness she threw at him, showed how emotionally invested she was in him. Would she take that risk by killing him without knowing he would resurrect? Given that she doesn’t really trust god’s plan, hence the desperately digging into the ground knowing god won’t save her, I don’t think she really had faith to begin with.
Easily one of the best shows I've ever seen, the ending is haunting and beautiful.

No one in the show said Vampire once...or was smart enough to say.. Looks mate, that's a demonic creature not an angel 😂
But I will say one thing.. The dead woman (ghost - vision) from the car crash with the broken shards of glass embedded all over her face while the siren lights flickering on the pieces of glass.. Is probably one of the most beautiful - disturbing - freakiest things I've ever seen!
That image in the preview was the only reason I started watching it. Visually, it was great in many ways.
It definitely reminds me of shots in other Mike Flanagan shows like Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor
I guess it's like in zombie movies how no one ever says zombie or knows what's going on. Suspension of disbelief kinda thing, maybe in this world they don't have media about vampires. 🤷♂️ Just my thought process at least
My answer is that there are no vampires in this reality... only aliens lol
I thought it was intentional to describe how easy a religious person can be manipulated. So, they know it is not an angel but because paul and bev say it’s an angel then they believe it. You know to show that people will believe in anything as long as they get something in return.
The convo between Erin and Riley at the end made me start bawling on my couch
Beverly FUCKING Kean is the real villain. Loved the series! Had some powerful scenes, great dialog\acting and well executed jump scares. I usually fine jump scares to be a really cheap overused tactic but Mike Flanagan executed them to perfection!
Bev was really good but for the priest was so good especially when giving speeches.
Midnight mass requires a patient listening and the watcher will be rewarded with a show that is both entertaining and enlightening.

😭😭😭I cried for the whole last episode, especially when Erin gave her final thought about life and that she only sees the truth about it only when she's about to die😔😔
Erin's monologue at the end made me cry so hard.. as an agnostic I struggle with the religious subjects Mike tackles in Midnight Mass.. I found her monologue just amazing and eye opening

Riley’s monologue (and Erin’s final one) about death really hit home for me as an atheist. They perfectly described how I feel about what happens when we die, but I’ve never been able to put it that eloquently. You don’t need a god or religion to see our existence as beautiful or purposeful.

Really liked how this show both deconstructed and reinforced religion in general. It’s a beautiful critique of our own faith and an apt caution to the dangers of over zealotry and religious pride.
100% how I see it too. I felt like those who have faith were still respected while it explored the trappings of religion and the judgment of others.

I thought the show was a metaphor for addiction. Riley was an alcoholic and killed a girl in an accident, and she (his guilty conscience) always follows him and is a constant reminder of his past. When Pruitt converts him, he feels that same “thirst” he had when he was an alcoholic and that’s why he was so against this whole vampire cult thing and eventually sacrificed himself for the safety of others. At the end when some of the towns people claimed to be unable to stop themselves from killing their family or friends, that’s their addiction taking hold of them. While others, like Ali and Riley’s parents, abstained from killing because they knew it was wrong and that they didn’t need to kill (even though they still feel that painful thirst). At the beginning they all looked down at Riley for killing that girl in a drunk driving incident, but at the end they all felt that same aching feeling of their addiction.
I know the internet has taught ppl everything is tunnel vision black and white but media isn't forced into a box. You can have multiple metaphors, themes and lessons. The show had faith and forgiveness as its back bone. You don't have to force the show nor yourself into a box of tunnel vision ❤

The vampires in Vampire Diaries describe the blood lust as an addiction. Vampires are a good analogy for it, I think.
@@arikawalton9922 I like the way u interpreted it. We are all subjective in what catches our attention first. I personally thought that Riley killed himself because he couldn't, as an atheist, accept how supernatural things were happening and that their nature was evil. I think one of the best lessons u can learn from this is, as u said, how destructive addictions can be, especially nowadays with everything being so accessible.

So many have complained about the many monologues, but I find them really well done and pretty insightful, and possibly containing some important “life lessons”. Definitely not boring to me at all.
Because many people now-a-days cannot cope with thought provoking dialogue as they are fed on exposision and pointless jump scares and have to be fed everything to them for them to understand instead of using thie brain. lol
@Edric I felt the same! They're a strong stylistic choice and I understand the people who didn't like them (my partner and I disagreed vehemently on them) but personally I found them fitting to the tone of the show. Plus the acting was incredible.
I loved the monologues! They were so well written and well acted, I would not trade any of them for a big flashy CGI action scene.

The monologues were great, but some of them felt so long like it could have been shortened a bit. Erin’s was fine but Riley’s explanation of death kinda dragged. Like I get it, your body shuts down and you die 😂

From a biblical standpoint I can understand how he first thought it was an angel. Angels aren’t supposed to look like humans. They are scary creatures with wings. But from a non biblical standpoint that thing is clearly a vampire lol

If you google Seraphs, Cherubs, and Ophanims you can see how a lot of the angles are different from one another. But none of the angles in the Bible drink blood or combust in sun so yeah it was pretty obvious from our standpoint that it was a vampire lol

The doctor was talking about EPP and other possible contagions. She mentioned that our bodies would eventually heal itself or ‘clean’ those infected blood cells to go back to normal. Maybe since she had not taken “communion” the Angel blood wore off?
Also, in some of the older vampire movies if you killed the ‘master’ then everyone goes back to normal.

I took it to mean that the 'Angel' had died in the sunlight trying to cross the Ocean. Like you said, in classic vampire tales when the OG vampire (or werewolf) is killed everyone goes bak to normal
But they never address that vampires even exist in this world, never mind the “rules” for them.
I think it was just part of Flanagan’s idea about how people twist and justify horrible things with their faith, or use it as an excuse for not facing the results of uncomfortable life decisions.
He’s hiding the creature, bringing him from exile to a new flock. It reminded me of how the Catholic Church hid and defended war criminals, some very disgusting Popes, individuals wanting power, priests and others in the hierarchy abusing children, as well as having affairs with underage teens and/or adults married or single, then hiding them, as well as often moving them and placing these “wolves” among a new flock who are given no knowledge of the person’s background. Just as he pretends to be the replacement, instead of the man they’ve all known for years. He then preys upon a man who trusted him, of which he feels no guilt for, as he justifies the predatory behavior via his religious delusions.
It also shows how easily people can be fooled into believing a monster is an Angel.
I mean it was a Catholic Church, but a comparison with a Reagan, Nixon, Trump, etc. and evangelicals could be made, though I don’t know Flanagan’s politics or if he’s explained any of the themes so far.

No one even mentions any other supernatural creatures.
Not one person says it could be a demon.
The sheriff would’ve been likely to mention the Djinn, for instance.

I don’t think it matters whether the “Angel” was destroyed or not, which is one reason we don’t see it.
The girl only missed communion that one time. It’s just as plausible that missing one communion was the reason, yet both are logical conclusions that work for the story.

Same - watched in one day! At first I thought "oh no, not another vampire story" but the way they intertwined with religion and spirituality was an interesting take. Having people revert back to their "best" selves was interesting since Bev didn't really change - that makes her best self who she already was in the present? Scary.
It was pretty obvious what was going to happen in regards to certain people de-aging, just based on the glaringly obvious aging makeup on the elder Pruitt and some of the other residents. Other than that, this series was damn near perfect, for me. Really enjoyed it.
Also, props for getting through that medocal pronunciation. That one is a mouthful!
Right? that was my only (well kind of only) critique. Why couldn’t they have just had multiple actors for each character? The makeup wasn’t good enough and the young actors didn’t have the elderly body language down.
So much this. My only critique. I was mystified why the “old” people had baby powder in their hair and why the docs mom seemed so weird: Cuz they were younger actors in bad makeup.
Yeah those effects were terrible. That and the first half of the first episode was really clunky and had a lot of awkward exposition dialog. But it ironed itself out

@@tinar8828 Using different actors would've been weird I think. The obvious solution would be the use CGI but that costs money and I have the impression that the blew most of their VFX budget on the monster alone.
I was honestly shocked when Riley takes Erin out on the boat, like I was shocked in that bit when he walked in on them making the communion wine but this episode kind of stunned me because I just expected things to go a certain way and then they didn't lol. But kudos to Mike Flanagan, he did such a good job (as did all the actors)
The irony in that was that Riley (the only Atheist on the island) didn't give in to the temptation to feed after being fully turned. He figured out how to control it just enough just like he figure out how to control his alcohol addiction.

My goodness, the comments! Yes! Yes! Yes! ALL of these observations and more are so so good! I absolutely BAWLED my eyes out at the ending. It was gut wrenching, sad, but so beautiful all at once. This series was a mirror to every religious person, everyone raised in the church, everyone questioning their beliefs, everyone who's been hurt by religious people, yet still has a love for God and/or a strong affinity for some people still in the religious community. It tackles all of that while remaining true and respectful to people's beliefs, not just a caricature. Well done, Mike Flanagan! Well done!
When Leeza lost feelings to her legs, I took that to mean the demon died. Aside - the end scene of ep 5 reminds me so much of the end scene of Saint Maud, but longer and more definitive.
Wings, fangs, feeds on blood, burn up in the sunlight….yeah my first thought would have definitely been angel.
Small isolated community - not all are like that but many can be esp in more remote areas.
Biblical interpretations of Angels portray them as quite horrifying looking. Think of Lovecraftian horror.

This was so intriguing and beautifully done. I’m a Christian but found this to touch on these topics expertly and really make one think. The vampire “Angel” was as strangely beautiful as he was horrifying. It’s such a cool and interesting concept. They kinda left it open for a possible 2nd series but it’s great as a stand alone too!

This whole series just showed the power of indoctrination. people can be swayed into believing just about anything.. now this show had a 10 foot tall vampire performing miracles but even without if you look at the personal stories you see it wasn't simply the magical vampire blood that swayed them it was the promise of purpose, redemption, After-life.. all these people were seeking something and the 10 foot tall vampire was selling a cure.
people will say this is none-sense no one would think a vampire was an angel but think about it if you were there and watched a little girl bound to a wheel-chair stand up and walk.. would you believe it was the work of a God or the devil.

This was a really well-done synopsis for a series that tackles so many deep questions. I enjoyed the long scenes at the AA meetings, when characters explored religious questions that have been asked for centuries. I appreciated that the priest was earnestly answering the theological questions with considered responses. For that, I would like to see this get an Emmy nom for writing. It's definitely a slow-burn, and I was tempted to abandon it by the middle of Episode Two, but the "talkiness" of it drew me in, and, I didn't miss the lack of physical action so much, because I was being drawn into the lives of the people on this island.

My friend pointed something out that's really interesting about Erin's lost baby. In the bible the virgin Mary got impreganted by the holy spirit when an angel visited her. But with Erin, when an angel visited her (taking in the "angel's" blood during communion), she lost her baby. Which is a sign that it is not an act of God but of evil.

Mike Flanagan’s work is just something else, the way he writes beautifully but also really shows the story and lets us interpret it works so well! seeing old cast members and his wife in a new story again was a great bonus too 🥺

The premise to Midnight Mass is similar to The Walking Dead: there are no zombies/vampires in that universe of the series, so nobody knows what they are, how they look etc.
This is why a limited series is the perfect storytelling format and closer to novels. Characters are fully fleshed out. Character motivations are thoroughly explored. Subplots are developed and provide the foundation for the main plot. The story is given time to build so the climax and conclusion is powerful and satisfying. This is why a hack like J.J. Abrams and his post modern “mystery box” theory of storytelling fails every time.
I don’t find vampire stories scary but still this was good because the real horror came from Beverly with her hypocrisy and bigotry. I can’t wait for the Haunting of Thornfield Hall!

Midnight Mass is one of the best "Horror" series in years. It is intelligent, gripping, well made and got me crying, cheering and thinking. The mysticism and theology put forward creates a thought provoking show. Father Paul played by Hamish Linklater is one of the most charismatic actors i have witnessed in a long time. In fact the whole cast was magnificent. There were times when i felt turmoil in the tummy from the expectations of what was to come. Questions brought forward on life and religious imagery made this series one that stands out among thousands of bad horror and bad theological films. I agree with you that Leeza not feeling her legs as the last scene means that the angel/demon has in fact died. Lets hope so any way. Enjoyed your explainations and thoughts, thank you.
I think another major theme is that true divinity or grace lies in genuine love for others and for ourselves. It is only when we fail to love that we fail to act in a godly manner, as seen with Bev who was, ironically, the most godless character in the entire show.
Mike Flanagan's emotionally focused horror is always potent. I wasn't brought to tears by Midnight Mass, and I was mostly frustrated with the characters who I found unlikeable. This isn't exactly a criticism, they are well written and beautifully acted. I just didn't connect with them. However, The Haunting of Hill House touched my heart in ways I can never explain because I lost an immediate family member to suicide and can empathize with every member of the family. In this way, I can see how Midnight Mass could really emotionally connect with someone who has faced similar challenges and traumas in life. Top shelf psychological horror!

You're not supposed to connect to a cult but you can atleast acknowledge and empathize with those born in isolation (the town). People desperate for a better life and less struggle. People today believe what they see and hear over the internet which is misguided. If I went broke trying to bring my daughter back to a normal life she was born with and the church magically fixed it, I too would be curious. Only Beverly was a televangelist without the TV and everyone else had their normal grievances.
I thought this had about as many likeable characters as Hill House did. And I'm so glad Flanagan cut this down to 7 episodes. Pacing of Hill House and Bly Manor was really rough at times.
I completely agree. This show was by all means a great edition to his work but Hill House managed to make me a lot more emotional. I suppose it has to do with the amount of time we got to spend with characters such as Nell and Luke. Everytime I watch Luke’s episode I can’t help but be emotional when he’s trying to pretend that the top hat man (his addiction) isn’t behind him. Overall I just felt like something was missing from midnight mass where I didn’t connect with any characters besides Riley, who seemed to get the most screen time.
@@stephendoctor6941 agreed. Maybe it was because we saw them as children, we felt more connected to them? I really loved the Sheriff and his relationship with his son and... That was about it. It gave me that Stephen King small-town vibe where everyone is ignorant and the true evil in the story

As an atheist, I personally loved Midnight Mass since it covered a few different religions (and lack of religion) and didn't treat any of them as particularly good or bad, the same with the believers. Riley wasn't anything like atheist stereotypes and was respectful to his Catholic family, the Muslim sheriff was a good man who just wanted to help, even if he highly disagreed with his son temporarily converting to Catholicism, and it does an excellent job at showing the good and bad sides of devout faith in general. All that and the very well done storytelling made it a really enjoyable watch for me.
This was an AMAZING show! Very different from Hill House/Bly Manor but still just as good, if not better. The acting on this show was incredible from top to bottom. Hamish Linklater, who played Father Paul gave perhaps the best performance I have ever seen on a TV show. Hopefully the acting, writing, and directing on this show is given the recognition it deserved and not dismissed because it is "horror"
This show was so unexpectedly good. I thought I was clicking on a movie and was surprised to see it was a series, one that sucked me in for an entire day as well. There were several scenes that had me feeling all sorts of emotions, but none made me as sad as hearing Riley talk about what happens when he dies. I'm still thinking about this show all day. There certainly was A LOT to unpack. It just maybe that this is one of those shows you can watch over again and notice new things you might have missed before. Thanks for posting this video.
I LOVED this miniseries; blew off a lot of work today to binge all of the episodes. This video referenced my two favorite scenes in the series. I connected the dots about Riley and his dreams almost the second I realized he had been turned, so I knew the broad strokes of what was coming on the boat and why, but I was genuinely shocked at how affecting I found that scene where Riley died in a state of grace. Whether because he forgave himself or because his victim forgave him or god itself granted him peace, that was an extremely beautiful moment, followed immediately by the scene I didn't anticipate with Erin screaming in horror and grief right into the credits. Very powerful. And then there was her last soliloquy about life and the universe and how we are all the universe dreaming of life, which was one of the most amazing speeches about death that I've heard in a long time. I'm very grateful they will never make another Midnight Mass, and I frankly hope they don't making any more hauntings because each of these stories Mr. Flanagan is making are such incredible gems that use horror genre to explore the human condition in such unique ways. They shouldn't be cheapened by reproductions.

I just finished this, and it was intense. Listening to Erins speech had me ugly crying. It reminded me very much of Ed Elrics revelation on the island hes left on, “One is all, and all is one.” He understood what that meant and I felt like Erin understood that as well in that moment.

It's amazing how flanagan could bring faith and religion issue into his works in a way that no one can't really offended. It's fair and in the end, i find my faith stronger than ever.
Loved this series. It was a familiar, yet uniquely presented, concept. I thought it was slow at times, but the pace was necessary for exposition and for mood. I loved how the Monsignor wasn’t evil, at least in the beginning. He was misguided, for sure, but his understanding of what had happened was because of his faith. If he had been the stereotypical “evil or possessed” priest, it would’ve been a much more shallow piece. I loved this show.
Watching this...it felt like I was watching moments too personal to be seen, but too powerful to ignore. I'm still recovering from it.

She had some things to say about how she wasn’t her memory. For me, though, the show was still about memory. It was about legacy. How we remember others, how they’d want to remembered, and how we want to be remembered. It was much more than what it appeared, much more than something about vampirism. Mike Flanagan’s films and shows are always quite deep.

Father Paul and Bev Keanne were so good, super possessed. The scene of that Vampire appearing in the Church as also good. I don't think they ever confirmed if the Vampire made it away from the sunrise, seeing that it was able to still fly. This has got to be one of the better horror series in a while.
That Leeza's legs go numb is the sign the head vamp was dead. Remember, if the head vamp dies, it undoes the infection.

Joe's trailer was out in the sticks, and not in the main part of town. Sure, maybe they did burn it down, but they never showed it on fire like the rest of the town. The Angel could of definitely seek shelter there. Though, I hope they do not make this a series. It stands just fine as it is.

Every time I start a new series and finish it, I am overly filled with joy when I find out Think Story has an “Ending Explained” on it. This is how I like to end any film or series and will not feel complete if there isn’t one.

I'm a Catholic as well and it's really funny that you mention that because biblically accurate angels are aren't just men with wings. They're actually quite disturbing. There's a reason in scripture that angels have to say "be not afraid". It's because they are terrifying to behold. There's one angel that is literally just wings and eyeballs. There's another that is an orb of light surrounded by rings. Pillar of walking flame. Stuff like that.

When Liza says “I can’t feel my legs” and smiles, I interpreted that as another strong theme in this show: mortality is good and beautiful. Living forever requires becoming a monster and dying, returning to dust, feeding new life, that’s beautiful. The finite time we get on earth with our loved ones is all the more precious because it ends. This show was a love story for our mortality.
I love that the Bev, the lady who knows the bible the best and constantly quotes it, is the one who understands it the least and in her final moments is literally burying her head in the sand

I loved your analysis!! There was so much you mentioned that I didn’t notice. I really resonated with the purpose aspect and the master hand bringing everyone back to the town. No one knows why we are truly here but I feel as if everything does have a reason, and it was interesting to think about the domino effect such as the series suggested.
When I tell you that was an absolutely beautiful show. The story was well crafted. I rewatched HUSH before starting this show that’s a good reference. For those who don’t know. The horror film HUSH. The deaf woman is the author of Midnight Mass(the show) she joked about Erin in that movie. I had a great time with this series. And support future stuff from Mike Flanagan now.
For some reason, throughout the entire show i loved the preacher. I don’t know if it was his acting, his character or a mix of both. I’m glad his ending was more gentle and he could be with his lady.
I like how in e4 they tried to pull a ned stark on riley but i was glad he's back caus he's the main character he came back and then he's gone with the most terrible death, god that shook me
