Heard my friend mention his friend had a Baofeng and the way he said it sounded so effin cool I had to get one. I didn’t know diddly about ham radio and now I’m addicted! New subscriber!
👀 not all China radios are crap, look at Anytone as an example. That radio has a part 15 FCC certification just like a TV or a DVD player, it’s not saying the radio won’t produce harmonics or spurious emissions. The TID does have problems that extend beyond spectral purity, like the noise it makes while transmitting, which TID has acknowledged. Oh, some folks have also gotten burned from the battery getting hot while transmitting as well. While I understand not everyone has the equipment to test the radios which is why I felt compelled to do it in a public form. I’ve tested / reviewed dozens of HTs and without a doubt, this was by far the worst.
Like I said, I ain’t calling you out. I’m calling out the system that’s stamps “approved”. That stamp should mean something. I don’t have access to instruments and analyzers. I don’t skim constantly through journals and postings to find out if the microwave microwaves, or the blender blends, or in this case if the radio radios. If it burns people, where’s the recall? We have a consumer system in place that should protect the public. People see it on Amazon, they see the approval, and credit cards get to flashin’. I’m calling out people who constantly bash Chinese radios. Half the electronics in their house are from China. No one hardly ever says, “except anytone” I’ll find out for myself. Maybe after using it I’ll feel some kind of way about it. Right now, the box is barely open, and I stand behind what I say on principle alone.
I don’t feel called out and appreciate the perspective. I don’t like making videos that point out the shortcomings of products but I feel that in this case, given all the problems with this radio, I felt obligated to do so. I didn’t even fully test the radio. given what I found so far it’s just not worth my time. Also, I do feel that at hams we deserve better than folks trying to push radios as problematic as this one. TID was totally cool about the feedback I provided and acknowledged I wasn’t the only person reporting them, they also said they needed to get the ones from “this batch” back but I ham doubtful a recall will be issued. Let’s not forget that when these were first on the market they had fraudulent FCC stickers on them which speaks volumes about the integrity of the manufacturer.
Another point that many fail to mention with these cheapo radios is the terrible squelch. They aren't at all sensitive on receive. Baofengs are exactly the same. Listen to the airband on this radio, the start of transmissions is ALWAYS distorted and muddy until the squelch opens properly. It's just crap!

Have two of these radios work well right out of the box can get about 3-5 miles through heavily wooded Louisiana terrain. I am waiting on mxt575’s to install on our sxs’s and we are going to bring them along with to compare in the ozarks around cass Arkansas. Always wondered what 50 watt gmrs would do in my particular situations vs popular 2-10 watt capable HTs.
I have a TinyVNA and used it on the Tidradio TD-H8. It is clean. So you are correct. There are so many reviewers. Many seem to absolutely go ballistic against Chinese Radios. Well I will have a Kenwood, Icom, or Yaesu if they buy it. I can't afford the big three radios. Currently I have tested several of the Chinese radios and have found them to be clean. I have two more on the way. I would like to be able to afford a new Kenwood D75 because my D74 is getting long in the tooth. The Kenwood TH-D75 will be going for over $700. That is off my wishlist until I win the lottery. I like your video because you have a lot more common sense than the others out there.
The brand that turned out to be a disappointment to me was RADTEL. Two became "unreliable". I've also had a Yaesu VX-150 give up the ghost, and the top knob on the Icom V-86 go haywire. The 150 was long out of warranty and Yaesu wanted $45 just to give a repair estimate (not deducted from the repair cost). Landfill. I haven't contacted Icom yet...

I have more than 1 H-8 version 2Ham and GMRS, both are great no squeal on 2Meters and no problem with batteries my opinion good solid radios and of course Approved! Great video!

I prefer Japanese big tier rigs but I got two Baofeng UV-5R8Ws from Amazon for almost nothing. I have not tried Tids yet. The two fengs I got are okay but the receive is not as good as my high dollar rigs. Programmed one UV-5R8W with the exact same channels as my Yaesu VX-6R, then put both on scan mode. The Feng was stopping on picked up interference from WiFi, my PC, BlueTooth and maybe even noise from my LED lights too. So it was always stopping even with the squelch turned up high. Yet my Yaesu scanned away and only stopped on legit stiff like Hams or repeater code bursts with the squelch set to only #2.. Took the Baofengs out in my car to a quiet parking lot and they were okay. No problems scanning. But brought back home, they picked up interference again on every other channel.

MY GMRS version has been working well for the week Ive owned it. The wireless OD app is a bit confusing, but still decent. Im looking forward to trying their simpler PC app, and of course, a wired Chirp config. Regarding the OD wireless app: MAKE SURE and READ from the raidio FIRST! And then save that original in a file, ESPECIALLY if you plan on doing bios boots into HAM or Full Unlocked modes...ask me why! 😑 😅😅😅
Great advice! I like this little radio, so I am very optimistic. It feels good in the hand. The app is maybe a bit clunky but I think for sure potentially slicker than a lot of other options. @@Bill-HRT I'm of the mind that "as long as you get (price tag) worth of fun out of it" - and that's up to the buyer more than anybody else - its ok. If I spent $50 and I made some QSOs, answered some of my own questions and had fun... I'd be ok with it. Obviously my expectations are lower for a $50 radio than they are for a $600 radio.
Thanks for joining in on the discussion. They just contacted me about reviewing another version. I’m not sure which version you have. Many of these radios can do both according to the firmware or lock/unlock status. Give me some more details like when you bought it. I will research to find out.
I appreciate your honest comments. I have had similar thoughts as well. I do appreciate that there are people who understand how to testing, but as an Extra, I do not remember in any of my studies on each license where I am required own, and know how to use equipment to test a radio before I actually use it. An honestly, a $75 NanoVNA is hardly a NIST certified piece of test equipment to be making absolute judgements about, in most cases, just one single radio. You really need to do a sample of several radios. I am not specifically pointing to one person or another here. Many now test and show testing on their channels. So it's left me to ponder how to move forward when testing with low budget test equipment shows a radio as suspect. I decided, as you did, if it received FCC certification, then I am going to use it and not worry about it. I am happy with all of my TIDRADIO Radio products, and I like the TalkPod as well. 73

Learning ham radio can learn about radios in general. Golden West's study guides help learn the questions for ham radio, but it can help you learn the basics of electronics, RF theory, etc. I have dealt with short term memory issues, and a learning disability even in high school. Took me nearly a year to pass the second part of the No Code Tech test, but I Did it! I only keep my license for emcomm.
The question is - does your radio have the same problems that Smokin' Ape (and mine) have? Does it make a squealing noise when you try to transmit full power (10 watts) on 2 meters? Do the battery terminals get hot? Hopefully, they don't, and I and others got bad batteries. But, I'm betting that yours does, too. Let us know when you get a chance. Thanks, -K7RLN
Thanks for watching, and taking time to join in. My radio does squeal. It is intermittent though. It also does not squeal on all of 2 meters. I have tried to re-create what Ham Solo experienced with the battery terminals. That was a negative with my particular radio. I've tried extremely long transmits at full power, and touching all of the contacts in various sequences, pairings, and I don't have that same issue. That doesn't negate the fact that some do squeal and some do have "hot" terminals. It's still a big problem for anyone who expected a finished product without issue. I have the usb-c battery with the charging light. The manufacturer sent me an email saying they are sending me a radio that addresses Ape's findings about the harmonics. I am optimistic that they will address all of the issues that make the radio sub-standard. I still believe the radio has some nice features that will make some people happy when the development issues are properly addressed. Tell me about your experience with the radio if you have one. 73 de Bill
@@Bill-HRT Thanks for the reply. I REALLY wanted to like this radio. It had (as you mentioned) some great features. But, I just couldn't get past the squealing problem, so I sent mine back. I have a new 10 watt Retevis radio on order that I'm going to try out to hopefully take this one's place.

Some of the Anytone's/BTech's are actually Part 90 certified.

I still believe the radio has some nice features that will make some people happy when the development issues are properly addressed. @@Bill-HRT Thanks for the reply. I REALLY wanted to like this radio. It had (as you mentioned) some great features. But, I just couldn't get past the squealing problem, so I sent mine back. I have a new 10 watt Retevis radio on order that I'm going to try out to hopefully take this one's place.

You said it! Ape was the first youtuber that I know of who stopped by, and encouraged me when I had minus 5 subscribers. I am an Ape fan and supporter. I watch his stuff all the time, and he knows what he's doing. The video wasn't about 'sputin was Ape said. That said, It's Approved!, lol.
