The Goal of the channel is to help the newcomer to Ham Radio find answers, see different techniques, and consider viewpoints that can lead to their own method of enjoying the hobby. I share my journey so other amateur operators can teach me while I might provide an opportunity to help others learn as well. It is all much fun, camaraderie, and community.

#hamradio #remoteradio #flexradio Kasa Smart Plug Mini I learned about these when I first got my transceiver. I purchased it as part of a two (2) part relay system. I had used such a device before, but these seemed less touchy than others I had used. So far after two years it is very responsive and. not at all prone to outages. *Affiliate Links* Kasa Smart Plug - amzn.to/4f7rmh6 Power AC/DC Rel...

ESP32 Powered Igate or Digipeater and More
Great video. I have an EFHW that I had to get strung to a tree across my yard and I used this method. A couple hints that I hope help others: 1. If you don't want to buy a throw line, you can make one pretty easy. For instance, for backcountry hiking I use a bag made from tyvek and just put rocks or dirt in it at the camp site, for weight, before I throw it. Cheap and easy, and lightweight (for those who back country hike they know the importance of this). 2. I string up my antenna connections with a system very similar to my food bags for hiking. I string up something that is a holder first. In the case of antennas, its a pulley or for food bags a carabiner. I actually do this as a loop so if your branch is 60 feet up, then you need about 120 feet of line. You don't have to do this for the holder line but I have a giant bundle of twine so its no issue for me. If you don't want to do this, just create a loop that your pulley attaches to and send it up the line before you cut the line to length, then to take it down you pull on the second loop. I just attach the pulley to the line and then haul it up to the branch and tie it off. But, before hauling it up, I put a second line through it, also a loop, and haul that up. This means your total expended line is 4 times the height you are attaching to. Now all you need to do is attach your antenna to the second line and haul it up. Pros: 1. Allows for easy take down of antenna if you need to. Experimentation is a given for most hams so this is important. 2. Allows for easy take down of pulley if you need to. This one is less obvious but sometimes you want to change things or move them etc so its useful too. 3. Less likely to get your line snagged on a tree branch and unable to retrieve it. The is ultimately the reason for the two line system but the simplicity and flexibility are nice bonuses. Cons: 1. Amount of line used 2. A little more effort but not much.
Great video! That bag offers a storage solution I didn't even know existed! More new toys to buy harharhar
***BIG MISTAKE!*** I misspoke when I said I connected a bnc to my Flex remote on. I apologize. I meant to say I used a terminal RCA connector.
Cool 😎 stuff, Bill. 73 🎙Ira
Beel! Good video, man. I use that same dingus on my setup. The difference I have is that the tuner and radio are tied to a PSU on a smart switch. I turn on the PSU first, then the radio thru Alexa. Reverse the process for shut down. Basically, I just cut out one piece of hardware from your setup, for better or worse. My next thing is finding an appropriate 240VAC smart switch to cycle the PGXL on/off. Thanks for the video, keep the shiny side up!
Jeem! Thanks for stopping by and jumping in the comments. I definitely appreciate the support. I’m glad your setup is working for you. Alexa is smarter than me so I haven’t gone there yet. Luckily (or not) for me I don’t have 220v to contend with. Let me know where you land with that switch. Let me know if you know of any inverter that’ll handle that amp properly on 220/230v. I only have 120v at this point. See you next time. 73 de Bill
Hi, did you end up solving the backlight problem? What was it?
Thanks for stopping, watching, and dropping into the comments! It has been a long time since that build, but I know I figured it out. At one point I was missing a set of headers. I just rigged some wire to solve the issue until I got another set of headers. I'm pretty sure in the next video, ua-cam.com/video/U-h0JMiAw0Y/v-deo.htmlsi=MqePbEPrBWuxsCKx I spoke about it. The set of wires I had installed outside the instructions did not work. When I installed the prescribed header, all was fine. Drop back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
great antenna Bill, going to get 1 quite soon.. tnx fer sharing.. 73🎙Ira
Ira! Thanks for getting in the conversation. I appreciate you stopping by, watching, and joining in. That antenna takes a little work, but it has been my most satisfying qth antenna. I can’t say enough good things about it. Enjoy! See you out there. 73 de Bill
@@Bill-HRT Nice..
Heyy 👋Bill, Great Video on the Maestro-C.. Thanks for sharing.. Do you have your complete base/QTH Flex set up video?? Hope to work ya on da bands. 73 🎙Ira
Hey! Thanks for stopping, watching, and jumping into the comments. I have not done a complete video on the Flex. For one, others who know better have done some good videos. I will, of course, but I want to make sure I've done it right and have it all the way I want it. Flex is doing absolutely great for me, but I am still to do the video. Stay tuned. 73 de Bill
@@Bill-HRT Ok Bill, quite understandable.. looking forward to it when your sorted.. $aving for my Flex, tnx 73 🎙Ira
Very nice device! About 8-9 years ago I was using a device something like that to control power to a DMR repeater and the router. It was wired to the router, and would ping (I think I had 3 options programmed) to see if it would get a ping back, and if it failed on those, it would do a power down cycle for about a minute. It would keep track of power cycles and you could check on the activity. I sold the repeater after about 4 years and kept the switch.. Repeater is still running, but now at a higher location in town..
Arnold! Thanks for stopping, watching, and joining the conversation. Yes, this switch is pretty good; I've used it for about two years. It's not quite as powerful as the switch you used on the repeater. I had to choose another brand to get that functionality you describe. I'll do a video on that one soon, I hope. I appreciate you coming by and sharing your experience with the switch. Drop back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice work Bill
Kevin! Glad you dropped by. Thanks for getting in there with a few, kind words. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I can think of several cool applications for those smart plugs! 73, KF4LMZ
Swamp-Fox! Thanks for dropping, Sir! You know it; that thing has many applications around the shop and home. I've been using it for two years, and I haven't had a single problem. See you . . . 73 de Bill
Second paddle I’ve gotten and I enjoy using it. The odd extra dah just means I need to be more precise but it feels good in hand and doesn’t take much room in my go kit.
MajorHam! Thanks for coming in! I appreciate you stopping, watching, and taking time to comment. You have echoed my thoughts exactly! If I get an extra dit or dah, I just figure it was me, and keep trying to get it better. Stop back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
We want to see more! 73, KF4LMZ
And, So you shall! So shall it be written, so shall it be done! Stay tuned, Swamp-Fox. 73 de Bill
What an outstanding presentation. Properly paced and very clear. Thank you!
I appreciate you stopping by. Glad you thought it was done well. That's high praise, I appreciate it very much, and will work to meet that standard. Stop back anytime. 73 de Bill
Nice setup Bill 👍
Ape! It's all your fault! Just kidding . . . Really, I appreciate you dropping in with a comment. See you out there. 73 de Bill
@ 😮
I am an olight fanboy! That magnetic base is cool! 73, KF4LMZ
These are my favorite flashlights, too. 73
olights have been spontaneously combusting in firearms applications. I'd imagine this is a lot less stressed than a weapon light, but kinda spooky to see a light from a brand with such an explosive reputation on a plane lol
Wow! I hadn’t heard about that. I carry one daily and use it daily. It hasn’t failed me yet. I’ll keep an eye. Thanks for dropping in with the info.
Love the Victron Energy stuff! You don't want to skimp on your power system. Well done!
Robert! When I didn’t know anything, the people who’d tell, told me wonderful things about Victron. That’s the direction I went in. So far, it hasn’t failed me yet. Thanks for dropping in. I appreciate the support. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I never seem to find them in stock. I can see why. Simple and useful! Thanks Bill!
Robert! I'm glad you always stop by. Yeah, I could get one quicker from Amazon, but maybe not built as well, and certainly not as fun. Stop back anytime. 73 de Bill
I can't get enough of the HRWB power pole kit. I have like 5 of them.
Kyle! Thanks for dropping in. They are the best built I've found. 73 de Bill
Was this stream in hotel room? LOL.
Kyle! Could you tell, lol! OMG . . . it was an experiment, and I learned some things. I'll try to to better, lol. Thanks for dropping in. 73 de Bill
Hey.. I’m here in central south Kentucky. Look up LCARA our radio club here in Kentucky. I’m a new general..and struggling to learn CW but it’s slowly coming along Kq4kdr
Majorme! Thanks for jumping in. I'm glad you stopped by. I'm like a broken record always promoting the Long Island CW Club. I'm a fan. Check them out. It's more than just a place to learn cw, it's truly a club. Their practice page for the carousel system of classes is fantastic. Try them out. LICW. If that's not for you, keep working at it; one bite at a time, and you will get it. Stop back and let me know. 73 de Bill
@ I’m a member.
I have to order one of those kits. The biggest issue is they are out of stock! Thanks for the video Bill! 73
Thanks for stopping in! I heard the key is to join the discord, groups.io or email George. I think me getting one was dumb luck. Keep trying, it's fun. Stop back and tell me if you get one. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Does the Multiplus II have any RFI on the ham bands? I know the high frequency inverter do.
Thanks for stopping by! That is a good question; I haven't tested it specifically. What I can say is that I operate the radio with no issues and lower than S5 noise in a country neighborhood with three housed within a rock's throw. The noise in the trailer hasn't made me think about noise. Does that make any sense, lol? I'll test it, and get back to you. The easy answer is the Multiplus does NOT offer ridiculous, band-blanking noise levels like one of my GoalZeros or some other inverters do. I'll get back to you. 73 de Bill
I know people that are knowledgeable and can easily pass the ham tests but the FRN requirement is what holds them back from getting a license.
Mr. Freddie! The people like me who need this video is exactly why I did it. I hope it helps. Thanks for joining in. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Thank you
Douglas! No problem. Than you.
We just started doing kits .. So far we did a couple AM/FM radio kits and a couple clock kits.. We also made the 4States QRP Cricket 20 and 40.. I wish we would have started kits sooner. I was afraid for no reason.... DE W4EMB.
Thank you for saying something. I am in the same boat, afraid of not trying kits again.
Thanks for joining in. I appreciate you stopping by, watching, and joining the conversation. Pick an easy one. Join a group. Set your own pace. You will have fun. They call it fishing, not catching fish. See you out there. Stop by anytime. 73 de Bill
Ed! Thanks for stopping by. You were just riding to work with me the other day; cw video-wise that is. I enjoy your videos. I appreciate you stopping in with a comment. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Keep packaging simple, most of them just get thrown out. I do keep my antenna analyzer in its box, mainly because I have yet to purchase a case.
I agree! I keep some, too.
What is the unit of measurement for when it is calling out distance?
Hey, Douglas! For the USA, altitude with reference to sea level for cruise is feet. Altitude above ground level when maneuvering close to the ground is feet. Distance from point to point in cruise is nautical miles. Distance from point to point when on the ground or close proximity is feet. Generally no meters or yards in aviation in the USA.
@Bill-HRT thank you
Making me want to build kits.
Send it!
Jokes on you! I start at 2x
TO! I KNOW, lol. I'm just glad you stopped by. I appreciate the support. Thanks See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice.
I appreciate you stopping in to watch. 73 de Bill
You can't go wrong with the Battle Born batteries. Love that trailer! 73, KF4LMZ
Swamp-Fox! I agree with you! The trailer . . . I’m working on it, thanks. Stop back by anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I guess there are other things that you could be growing so the house plants look nice.
Dennis! Those things only grow ON me, not the trailer, lol. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Thanks for the overview! My QMX is on it's way!
Thanks for stopping by! It’s probably changed since I’ve done the video, but I know only for the better. Stop back anytime to let me know how it works for you. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving! 73, KF4LMZ
Swamp-Fox! Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Good idea to set goals when setting out to play radio! And, thank you for hunting us. It was fun to get you in the logs!!! 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
Y’all! Thanks for dropping in. You’re always welcome. I appreciate the support. You guys are always fun. My cw needs the practice. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Good information. I like that you cover some of the basics and other problems that other channels gloss over.
Thanks! I appreciate the support! I try to keep it basic so that everyone can follow along, and people who don't think they can give it a try will be more comfortable jumping in. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Any plans for solar/battery auxiliary power?
Daniel! Thanks for dropping in. Yes! Yes and Yes, lol. That was one of the first things I started working on, and I'm happy with my setup, and it will definitely be part of the series. Stay tuned. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. I am good on qrz; callsign K0WHW. Come back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
@ thank you for getting back to me! Two things: 1. I’m looking forward to a tour of the trailer when you’re done. 2. How has your experience been with the TX-500 on SSB and digital modes specifically? I’ve been interested in getting one for a while but not sure if I should wait for the new Yaesu instead.
Daniel, I am very fond of the TX-500. I travel a lot, and I had been dreaming of a radio just like that. So, like a kid on Christmas I was and am very happy with this radio. There are caveats and warnings, though. Even though I would never get rid of this radio, I also wouldn't jump to tell someone to buy this radio without understanding the drawbacks. The audio chain in this radio relies on a component that is no longer available. That very same component can and has failed when stray radio or electrical feedback went back into the radio and fried that component. A work around, to the best of my knowledge, has not been found. Look into it. Probe the groups.io and forums. That said, am I getting rid of mine? Heck No! I am crazy about that radio. When mine fried because of that component, I sent it in to be fixed and bought another, additional TX-500 just in case. Care in setting up, not unreasonable care, is what it takes to keep it safe and strong. If I was telling my son to get a radio, I might suggest the new Yaesu or the IC-705. I hope that was fair and honest. Come back anytime. See you out there. Stay tuned for trailer talk. 73 de Bill
Love the video Bill. Thanks for that! Safe Flights! 73
I appreciate you dropping by. Thanks! Thanks for the nice words. You be safe, too. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Great job..thank you for the inspiration. Looking forward to the series.
Thanks for dropping by and watching. I appreciate you stopping, watching, and joining the conversation. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I built one a few months ago, and it's been great. Love the black case it has now! You'll likely get a bit more than 50w on most bands. Look at winding one of the transformers with coax instead of the included wire, it increases efficiency/gain a bit, if I recall correctly.
Thanks for jumping into the conversation! I appreciate you stopping by, watching, and giving all of us a tip on toroid winding for the amp. I am going to study on using coax instead of the wire on one of the toroids as you suggested. Stop by anytime. Feel free to steer me straight when I start the build. I'll need all the help I can get. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Hey Bill! I do love me some kits!
TO! Simple fun, right?! I appreciate you coming by, even at 4x viewing, lol. 73 de Bill
One day a Flex will be mine :) Great stuff 73
The Flex is one of my favorites. It's interesting that every update gives a slightly different, possibly better radio, It sounds like a sales pitch, but if I want a new feature I wait until they include it in the firmware. I don't have to scrap my radio, and buy another one. So far so good for me. I'm happy I bought it. Stop back by. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Wow cool !
Thanks! I appreciate you stopping by, watching, and jumping into the conversation. Hopefully the next few will be clearer and better explained. Stop back by anytime. 73 de Bill
So excited for the Big Green Ham Machine series! Woot!
Robert! Thanks, man. Doing it is challenging, and most certainly trying to video and explain it is, lol. I'm tryin. Stay tuned. 73 de Bill
I love the big green box!
Kyle! Good to see you, my friend! It’s a Hiker with a thyroid issue, I told you, lol. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I love gps, ais, and aprs. The change to GPS on boats from loran was a big deal in my life.
Thanks for coming into the conversation. I really appreciate it. I was learning aviation back in the 80s; I remember how everyone thought loran was so wonderful, and it was! . . until gps started becoming more prevalent. Come back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Slick trailer! It turned out great! 73, KF4LMZ
Swamp-Fox! Thank you. Lot's of work still to be done. I have to concentrate hard on the finish work; not exactly my forte. Stay tuned. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Thanks for the updates Mr. Bill! Tinkering is Zen.
Dennis! Great to see you in here. I appreciate you coming by. Doing this video series is kind of hard; it's like listening to a video over and over while you edit. In this case, figuring out how to do the work. mulling it over and over, doing it, possibly redoing it, and then talking about it, lol. At any rate, Ima gunna get it done. Drop back by anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
