Same here. Im from 1967, roughly the same age as most of those Grunge-era musicians. The whole Alternative and Grunge movement from about 87-96ish was the embodiment of my musical experiences. It pulled everything I knew together and made it into one movement, covering all kinds of sounds, emotions and thoughts. Really was kind of a Golden era of music!
I so feel you all. First grunge song I heard was Mudhoney’s “You Got It” on the local college radio station, just after New Year’s 1990. Direct hit to my brain
This record was recorded up the street from where I live now on the northend of the Seattle metro area. It's a tribute to Andrew Wood, singer from Mother Love Bone who died from a heroin overdose. I was about 20 when this record came out. Andrew Wood was a much-loved character in the Seattle scene, locals who were in the scene still talk about him today. He and Chris Cornell had been roommates for a time on Capitol Hill area of Seattle. Members from Mother Love Bone went on to form Pearl Jam, so all of these bands are connected.

Yeah the blues and Grunge are alike in that they have that inwardly looking into oneself the music reflects that I think , Grunge never gets old and now it’s over 30 years since what we can grunge came about it was already there actually from the early to mid 80s but it wasn’t labeled Grunge ! You can’t go wrong with blues guitar or grunge especially with both you got a great base for playing the guitar ! I’ll be 50 years old in a few days and I can honestly say this kind of music keeps my mind and spirit young I still feel like I’m 21 inside when I hear this song or any other early 90s grunge song !
I feel so lucky to have been in the Puget Sound area when grunge took off. It was a real treat to see all of these great bands before they got big nationwide.
I lived over north of Spokane and was enamored with Seattles music scene, I would drive over quite a bit to catch whatever shows I could. Had a good friend who lived there and was friend of a friend with Layne, met him a few times at house parties and such. Met Andy and Stone after a house party show too.
The song was originally written as a Tribute to his long time roommate and friend Andrew Wood, he flew back from Europe to be with him as he passed. Mother Love Bone was his band and later became Pearl Jam, Wood’s girlfriend said she heard many song Wood was working on in Pearl Jam’s 10 album. Wood and his brother had a band called MalFunktion before Mother lLove Bone. Chris tried to keep Andrew Wood off drugs and got him in rehab several times. Miley Cyris sang this song at Chris Cornell tribute concert.
@@ssRocker-nn3tp I saw her cover of Zombie, I will check her doing Zeppelin. I was wondering why her voice was deeper, apparently during her Hanna Montana days they worked her like a rented mule and damaged her vocal cords, she didn’t say anything about surgery but just it was a long recovery. Chris was a baritone, many other singers are too you can spot them by their screaming to hit higher octaves, few as clear and 4 octaves like Chris. Miley I think is using that technique. Thank You for the information ✌️
@@ssRocker-nn3tp Yes I watched most of them last night, I liked her cover of Sweet Jane and Tribute song to Taylor Hawkins. Call me old fashioned but she needs to put more clothes on, LOL. One of my favorite songs of all time. When Chris Cornell died, it took on a whole new meaning for me. This entire album is worth a layback and chill sesh.
Ahhh. Back when music was good and talent was abundant. Amazing how the planets aligned to create that one moment in time in Seattle. Pearl Jam, soundgarden, nirvana, AIC, temple of the dog, mad season...the list could go on and on. There was a special magic in the water. No doubt.
I remember how much good music was on the radio back then. The entire genre of music that was born in Seattle was incredible, too many good songs/albums and bands to name them all. It was definitely a great time to be young and I miss it dearly.
@@kwantoon agreed. Rock music was epic then and Rap was just as epic. You had the roll-over icons like Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, and Rakim just to list a few from the 80s, then into the early 90s we got the solo NWA stuff from Dr Dre and Ice Cube, Snoop, my favorites Bone Thugs, Busta Rhymes, WuTang, Tupac and Biggie... there's so many more. Even Outkast made it into the 90s despite being a more 2000s act. Plus you had the legit female artists like salt n peppa and tlc. And Missy. Hell, even country music was good back then! It still sounded like classic country. The 90s were a great time for music.
This song was written for Cornell's Friend (Andrew Wood) who died of an overdose. This song gives me the chills everything because it reminds me of my Cousin (Andrew, ironically) who died in the same fashion Cornell did just a few months after Chris did, it was a favorite song of mine before my Cousin passed but now everything I hear it it gets me a bit emotional, especially the last verse.
This song is like a football player who dedicates a game to someone who recently passed.....you channel all that grief and rage...all that energy, into something that will stand forever as a testament to how much you cared about the person!! Sometimes, someone passing can be a turning point in your life...maybe positive...maybe negative. It depends which way You direct the energy❤❤
Chris Cornell was one of a kind but the entire Seattle "grunge" scene rallied around one another and for a brief period recorded some of the best songs of all time.. Temple of The Dog was a one-shot tribute to Andrew Wood but literally every song on the album is a deep/dark gem.
This one always hits different with me. Brads right, it takes me to a place that I’d rather not go. There’s always a time and a place for these songs . 😕
Chris wrote this song specifically for Andrew Wood the night he got the news of his death. The remaining members of Mother Love Bone along with Eddie Vetter went on to become Pearl Jam
I really love watching people’s reaction from all walks of life listening to the music I love and finding the beauty in it. It definitely brings people together in a good way! You guys are great. This song was about Andy wood from mother love bone.
Lex the easiest style to play for beginners are punk rock, grunge (slower/sludgy style of punk and metal), and folk/country, indie , jangle pop, garage rock, hard rock, nu metal/rap metal, and some acoustics style music. Punk, post punk, alt rock, grunge, industrial, etc. are usually quicker power chords, barre chords and riffs so its a little simpler. . Blues can be a little challenging for beginners, blues scales. Funk, ska punk, dance rock, reggae and reggae rock are also fun to play. Pschedelic, shoegaze (noise pop/dream pop), space rock, gothic rock/darkwave of new wave, experimental/art rock, etc are more ethereal sounding are lots of amp, pedals, whammy bar effects, bends, distortions, and feedback, etc can be tricky. Metal, prog rock are little harder. More blues based and classical music based structure and influences. . At times more technical, changing notes, solos, etc. . But, everyone is different. Depends. Practice practice practice!
I love seeing younger folks enjoying the music from my twenties. Lex, your reactions are priceless. You really seem to get grunge. Eddie and Chris are two of my all-time favorite singers.
The power of music has been achieved. Johnny Cash covered a Soundgarden song written by Chris Cornell (Rusty Cage) and Johnny released a song called “Ain’t No Grave” in the latter days of his life. I believe is worth a listen to.
If you want to go in an unusual direction... Norah Jones did a live solo performance of Black Hole Sun during a concert in Detroit, 3 days after Chris Cornell's suicide. Another example of an artist performing in top form while experiencing the loss of a friend.
Footsteps is my favorite Pearl Jam song. You probably know this, but Footsteps and Times of Trouble are the same music. Stone Gossard gave a copy of the tune to Chris Cornell and another to Eddie Vedder....they both put their own lyrics over the music....they both knocked it out of the park.

Had a good friend who lived there and was friend of a friend with Layne, met him a few times at house parties and such. Met Andy and Stone after a house party show too.
This was written about Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone) who died via heroin overdose. Candlebox' song, Far Behind is also about Wood.
This is my favorite Chris vocals. Love this song.
1 of my favorite songs.
Great album. For what it's worth, Miley Cyrus did a very good cover of this for the Chris Cornell tribute concert.
Yes. She did and a lot of rock covers. Check out led zeppelin.
Miley did a respectable version. I wasn't prepared for that.
Wow... really!? Maybe do some fact checking, name recognition and time-line verification. Lolz. ✌️
And she nailed it. she deserved my respect. I was never a fan of her. but she is a rocker at heart. Check out her rock covers by led zeppelin.
@@docwatson8848 You,re welcome. She also did pink floyd , metallica and others.
@@ssRocker-nn3tp Yes I watched most of them last night, I liked her cover of Sweet Jane and Tribute song to Taylor Hawkins. Call me old fashioned but she needs to put more clothes on, LOL. Kind of like Chris Cornell did she covers great songs. Have you heard the rumor about Chris and Chester Benningtons cause of death, dark stuff but believable.
Brings back memories of college. All of that great grunge music in the first half of the 90s was incredible.
Your right brad...everything Alanis touched in the 90s kicked ass!
Rest in peace Andrew Wood and Chris Cornell, 2 roommates that both died of suicide 30 years apart
Super powerful and emotive singer. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with every note.
Check out "Sunshower" by Chris Cornell. Talk about a great vocal... Chris really shines on that one.
They (Temple) were a super group before they all truly found their talent…
Heart,Mind and Soul. Putting Feelings into Words that Moves you!
Chris Cornell was one of a kind but the entire Seattle "grunge" scene rallied around one another and for a brief period recorded some of the best songs of all time.. Temple of The Dog was a one-shot tribute to Andrew Wood but literally every song on the album is a deep/dark gem.
ugh. favorite album of all time. great reaction..just love this
Whole album is a masterpiece one of the best albums of that decade.
Andrew Wood was the singer of Mother Love Bone. Chris Cornell’s friend who overdosed. Chris wrote this for him
Full body chills...RIP Chris
RIP Andy and Chris- rocking heaven together
Thanks for reacting to this legendary song
Possibly the best vocal track Cornell ever laid down. Always loved this song.
Because they are reliving it through the healing power of a beautiful melody!
I'm 60 and my favorite music is from the '70s. And pretty much any genre. But Chris Cornell's vocals are in a class all on it's own.
I really love watching people’s reaction from all walks of life listening to the music I love and finding the beauty in it. It definitely brings people together in a good way! You guys are great. This song was about Andy wood from mother love bone.
One of the great albums of all time.
Yall have the best, most contagious smiles, Sending yall lots of love and positive vibes. Thanks for what you do.
Sounds from someplace above what humans can do Is what Chris Cornell did ! That's why we all miss him with his family so much !
If you want to go in an unusual direction...
Norah Jones did a live solo performance of Black Hole Sun during a concert in Detroit, 3 days after Chris Cornell's suicide. Another example of an artist performing in top form while experiencing the loss of a friend.
The live version of this is flawless.
My God , makes my eyes water up. Sorry Chris. R.I.P. We still love your force. Alive in music forever.
when my father died in January, this song played in my head over and over for two months. every time I hear and cry.
❤
Lex looked like she was feelin this one on a spiritual level!!!
times of trouble is my favorite on this album but they are all great 10/10
Footsteps is my favorite Pearl Jam song. You probably know this, but Footsteps and Times of Trouble are the same music. Stone Gossard gave a copy of the tune to Chris Cornell and another to Eddie Vedder....they both put their own lyrics over the music....they both knocked it out of the park.
A thumbs up before the first note is played. RIP Chris Cornell.
