- Ahoy legends, this week we tackle the age old debate of which reel casts the longest and even we were surprised by the results!
Using K'gari's (Fraser Islands) long beaches as the testing zone, Brownie and I put our research caps on to find out the answer once and for all!!
Hope you enjoy the video!

hey Sammy, liked the Vid as always, you may want to look at long distance casting from the UK where we use small overhead reals and rods designed for this purpose. Also there are several casting techniques that pre load the rod to it's full potential (off the ground and the pendulum). I think the world record for 125g (4.4oz) is 280m. But the big 1 for me was the last clip were you showed the snap off which is dangerous in it's own right someone came up with a idea that for every oz of lead you re require a shock leader of 10lbs min so a 4oz lead requires a min 40lbs shock leader this connects to your terminal tackle up the rod and down on to the reel . keep them coming cheers.
I was thinking all about the videos i have seen and wondered if other aussie are aware of the potential distance based on technique? So fascinating, for me I like the pendulum technique!
Thanks mate! Appreciate you tuning in!
I was trying to recreate a situation using tackle that the majority of surf casters use in my local area. No so much try to go solely for distance. The overheads aren’t very common over here. We generally use spin or side casts.
As for the sinker that was only a 1.5oz lead, and I was using 23lb mono. There may have been a weak point in the line 🤷♂️🤷♂️
OH reels use to be very popular over here for fishing but still not for the beaches as we have deep water close to shore.
But OH reels in the 70-80-90’s use to be the main reel for high speed spinning of the rocks with metals
Good experiment! Being an Alvey tragic, I was a bit bummed by the distance result. I'm reassured though that if it was, 'which one will survive the longest', the Alvey will leave the others way behind.
Awesome bit of fun on the beach. I remember afternoons practicing casting on the beach just like this as a kid.
It would be fun to see the extra distance you would gain with an overhead reel set up similarly to these!
Sammy your content just keeps getting better buddy. Always look forward to your videos mate. Keep it up❤
Thanks mate, appreciate it 🍻🍻
Furtherest?
Really missed you last week.
The word is furthest.
Anyway, glad to have you back.
Cheers
Lucky I’m a fisherman and not an English teacher 😂😂🍻🍻
great info ♥♥
Awesome ep Guys
Thanks mate
Love your videos mate. All the best from Scotland Sammy.
Appreciate the support mate!
Trust Samy to turn cast into a comp. youre a legend mate.
Excellent, but. It's Furthest rather than furtherest. 😁👍
Well there you go.
Nice work.
Thanks. Always wondered what would be best.
Haha, even the 23lb couldn't save you😂
Since I use overheads on the beach, I would have been interested to see how they stacked up. Great ep mate, cheers.
That’s just down right unAustralian mate…must be Victorian Lolz 😂
Good video mate
Very interesting for sure. Could you do a video on slide baiting (not with a drone but casting like you just did)
Hoping to do one mate, just trying to line up the right conditions for it 👍
Sjesus Sammy, think I had too many cold ones whilst watching Bathurst 1000 cause I missed you catching any fish 😂
Very interesting… So what would be the advantage of the surfcaster vs the spinning reel for beach fishing?
just got back from Bribe island with a flatty of the flats
Sammy what would you recommend as a set up for school mackerel and long-tail tuna, that can cast out lures for bust ups and so you can put out a gang hook too? what rod and real would you recommend?
Great work men 👏 👍
🍻🍻
I think the conclusion with spin reels is down to marketing. Give it a bigger spool and call it a surf model and bazinga. It must be better... isn't it? Having said that, i love my ultegra 😂 purely because the spool size gives me a shirt load more line capacity. Very handy when using the drone to get the bait out a bit further. Thanks for another great vid 👍
Well done
Cheers for the video Sammy, love the surf vids as that’s my bread and butter (fav camping spot inskip point) had a look for the Wilson rod, couldn’t find how much it weighs in at, I’ve got a Penn Ally 6-8 kg and a 3000 shimano, pretty happy with the distance but will swap to mono after this vid, just wanted to enquire about the derives weight as standing around for a few days fishing usually gets my back fired up, any feedback would be awesome 👏
Ps having a crack up at the suggestive women posts 🤣
so worth 2 weeks of waiting
Couldnt have been better timming, today brought a 13 ft timber wold, need a reel so im really lookimg forwards to sammys test comparisons.. discretion advised ( edit at 40 seconds ) I think the European style will exceed or the longer spooled reel!
goes to show you how much manufacturers play with consumers weakness which is our inability to see through their marketing jargon so they can charge you that extra $$$. nice work Sammy
I use both an alvey and a overhead reel for my beach/rock rods
Penn fathom 40 casting special
Alvey 50gcz
Perhaps fit a sliding reel seat to the Wilson and get the reel in the correct position and right technique for an overhead thump. The first guide (butt ring) diameter should be around 40/50mm to allow the coil of line off of the surf reel which will out cast an 8000 every time. Biggest advantage is the greater distance on the retrieve per reel revolution. And finally the reel handle placed on the left for a right handed angler. Otherwise great test👍…
im suspicious at the results considering 1st, 2nd, 3rd is reverse to what you tested...be interesting if you went back to the alvey now you've warmed up/gotten a rhythm
I'm not sure this was a fair test Sammy, i think we need to get someone who can actually use a Right Hand Reel🤣
What ounce star sinker was that Sammy? I have a Shimano Ultegra 14000 and a Shimano Aerlex 10000 I don’t think there is much difference between them in distance 😊
Probably should have given the Alvey another couple of casts after the spinners to make sure it wasn't just you getting better at casting the big rods. You did notice you were getting further each cast initially, but 10% is a big margin to make up in technique.
How long was the Alvey rod?
Well looking at your rods, a fixed spool any of them if they don't have a big bottom eye/guide that will always impede the line as it binds ups in the bottom ring. You can hear it as well on the cast, best fit for the rod with small butt rings will usally be the spinning reel as the coils coming off are smaller. As they say bigger Butts(rings/giudes) are much better as does not bind the line in the butt guide. Best casts would be from a multipler no binding in butt ring as it come off the spool directly in line with the rod rings.
When I built my spinning rods I made sure to match the stripper guide to the cone of line as it came off the spool. I'm wondering if the rods were custom made for the reels, or just off the shelf?
These rods were specifically designed for side cast and spin reels. The side cast rod had a much larger stripper guide then the spin as well as different guide spacings 👍
What about a multiplier, daiwa saltist sl50 for example
Whilst it is hard to beat spinning reels for casting lighter weights, when you want to cast anything heavy (OVER 300 GRAMS?) a smooth conventional surf reels are impossible to beat.
Here in South Africa some years back an Alvey salesman promoted the make by giving the RSA team each a reel to try out. I enjoyed the one to one ratio for retrieving fish, however with light line after casting a number of times, the line used to curl up.
Yeah they are quite susceptible to line twist the Alveys. You have to manage the twist are each cast.
Is that a new rig on the beach Sammy? Nice wheels mate.
I personally get much more distance using an alvey.
Hey Sammy, have you seen the pendulum casts that people can do?? Absolutely mental lengths they get out of them.
40 years ago i could cast a no 6 bean sinker on 30 lb mono line loaded on a 650 c5 side cast reel and a 13 ft general purpose 6 wrap fiberglass rock rod 154 paces and i'm 6ft 2 inches so probably 120 to 150 meters of distance . so interesting to see how all the rods and reels went.
Bloody awesome getting an insight too early fishing tactics, and the inspiring being thrown around is very attracting, I feel privileged to be apart of a beautiful lifestyle
Nice one mate that’s some big distances!!
What dia was the mono . You should be hitting at least 150m with the ultegra . I'm putting baits 180m in UK with mine
Now spool the 8000 reel up with some pe2 braid and cast a 40 or 60g slug and see how far it goes
I just want to say the that the results change between different people because some people have better ways and strengths. Great test tho.😀
Needed to have 3 rods, to make it a fair test. 1 cast with each to complete the 15 casts. Then you would have had the same amount of practice/fatigue for each rod. In this test, you got better and better, so it could have been practice rather than the reel making the difference.
Did you find the sinker?
As a Florida native who loves shore fishing, I've NEVER encountered a side-cast reel. What's the advantage of using side cast?
Hold a lot of line simple to use very robust and the reel seat is a lot closer to the but vey comfy to use for long periods
Most reliable reels you can buy.
A week without Sammy is a week without life hahahhahaha
Hahah don’t stress mate! I’m back now!
if you want distance use an overhead no line twist just better all round
Abu 7000C for the win :)
I reckon mono would go further.
Come on Sammy, no old school overhead/casting reel?
I don’t have one mate! The overheads aren’t very common at all up my end of town!
What about the overhead you forgot about?
And then someone rocks up with conventional reel and pendulum cast😅
I have never seen a reel like the first one you used here in the USA.
More reliable than anything else.
You didn’t say what line you were using. I’m assuming braid for the spin rigs and mono for the Alvey. If so, there is an advantage in braid. But, I’m not surprised the two spin reels came out on top. 100 m with the Alvey is a great distance. There is only one reel for surf bait fishing, and that’s a 650 Alvey. For tossing metals around, a spin reel.
He said “all reels using 23lb mono”
Over head would probably eat all three 😂
like to have seen that with a pillie on gang hooks ! Did the bait stay on ?
They would go a fair bit shorter with a bait I’d say. A lot more resistance in the air
I get further with my Trinidad 30a
Great comparison, any chance of doing the same comparison with say a $50 kmart surf rod verse a $100-$200 bcf surf rod verse your expensive surf rod. I know you get what you pay for but would love to hear the difference. maybe then save up and get the better rod.
awesome video haha i've done a casting distance video myself. always fun putting the gears to the test. but as well as reel a good rod helps too haha. my personal best distance is 160m on a 30lb j-braid with 5oz sinker. you forgot to mention the slow osulation system on the ultegra. thats my personal favourite feature on a dedicated surf reel. interesting how the surf and the spin both came neck and neck though
For the purpose of accuracy did you leave out the same amount of line for the cast
Which one retrieved quicker
The regular spin 👌
U forgot the ultimate beach reel which smashes both the ambassador overhead big red I like to call it
Should off added in a conventional some people get insanse casts with them
Let’s see some sea fishing Sammy. Last few vids are Fattys or surf shite😃 get your buddy with you and get some big reds please
Did you get a new car mate? Thanks for this one. I’ve always wondered.
This why casting competitors use run if the mill spinning reels.
Yeah right.!!!!
We did this last year on fraser with a family member that had stradics to cast with.
Then he used one of my casting reel, rod combos. He never used his set up for the next 6 days. Ive been fishing Fraser for nearly 30 years. If you want consistent quality fish you need distance.
Then again what do i know.
Are you implying that I doctored the result in someway?
I’m well aware casting distance plays a bit part in a successful beach session. Hence the experiment…
You don't mention what weight you're casting there Sammy? A well set up magged overhead with a more inertia loaded cast in the pendulum style with a shock leader would be my choice for outright distance mate. That or long rod, fixed spool with braid mainlines
New car Sammy
Yeah mate, upgraded the Paj!
I thought the main advantage of the alvey is that it reduced line twist
You’d be completely wrong in regard to any of their side cast reels. The main advantage is you can build a sand castle on it and wash it off in the surf and it’ll still run smoothly.
Yeah Alvey’s are no good for line twists. Easy enough to manage it though 👌
U missed out on the reel contender overhead
overhead...?
Where’s the overhead ??
*Furthest
Sorry, I had to 😂.
There’s a reason I’m a fisherman not a English teacher 😂
I'm guessing sammy can't cast a overhead reel long distance.
Sorry to say ur casting tech, isn’t good enough at all, but thnx for such good review
Give me an old Penn 500, and I will cast further than all 3 reels you have there.
Thought you died Sammy no upload last week
Hahah nah mate, was on holidays and watching footy finals!!
fair enough
Obviously you used 3 different rods, but what are the specs of each rod?
The rods are exactly same for every reel. The exact same blank for both spin cast and side cast. Only difference being butt length for side cast and stripper guide size for side cast
No fishing wtf ?
Now lets drop them in the sand and submerge them in the salt water and see what reel comes up trumps
Why would you do that with your gear brother?
Because it happens at the beach pretty regularly and the alvey can take it, but spinning reels cant
@danieltaylor757 been beach fishing my while life and never once had my reel submerged in salt and sand bro... you just look after the gear you have
Buy a penn m8 or any quality spin reel there fully sealed reels these days
I’ve used Alvey’s all my life, don’t think I’ve ever dropped one in the sand whilst been actually fishing with a bait in the water. I’ve had a few kiss the sand from a rod holder, back with my gear. When it has fallen over whilst ive been rigging up. That said, an Alvey leaves any spin reel in the dust when bait fishing from the beach, and when tossing metal slugs, a spin reel is the go.
Did anyone else want to see Brownie sconed by a sinker.... ok....I'll let myself out ....... ......... ........
I think we all wanted to see it 😂
How about you learn OTG and Pendulum casting techniques. Then learn to cast a baitcaster. You might crack 300 yards
Not to be the fly in your ointment but there has been a distinct fall of in your content
Still a good vid while more appropriate to your region but no offense
A 30 minute experiment doesn't make any attempt at "adventure"
Been living vicariously through your channel from the states while working 70 hour weeks
Guess you spoiled me
Skill issue.
really are you fishing , it does not look like you are only selling reels why go home hitzke
Maybe, but it's the Alvey reel that fills the creel...😅
I get further with my Trinidad 30a
