Hi Margi, Glad you enjoyed the video. It’s always good to get outside. My Palette is great. I did a video of it a while ago. So if you want to find out more about it, have a look at that. Best wishes, James
Loving your loose approach and they way you work through the messy stage bringing the whole painting together, but still maintaining the impressionistic style
Hi Kate, Glad you enjoyed the video The messy stage of a Watercolour is always a bit of a problem, however, the more Painters I do the more I know it will be okay in the end. I love the impressionistic feeling of this style of painting, and I find it the most exciting way to paint. Lots more videos to come. Best wishes, James
Thanks Gary, glad you enjoyed it. If you haven’t done plein air before, have a look at my set up video which will give you tips on equipment to use and that will hopefully make it much easier for you. Thanks James 😊
That is a glorious painting. The sparkle on the sea and the formation of the rocks and The Bass Rock is beautiful. I’ve just discovered your channel and I’ve subscribed. I am a raw beginner in watercolour, so this is gold. Thank you. 😊
Hi Borley. Glad you enjoyed the painting. North Berwick is a wonderful place and this was one of the most enjoyable paintings I’ve ever done there. I’m so pleased that you’ve started Watercolour. It’s a fantastic thing to do and a great adventure. It comes with a lot of ups and downs, but in the end, it’s all worth it! I’ll have lots of tutorial videos coming out after I’ve got back from my painting trip. I hope they help. Good luck with your new venture. Best wishes, James
Hi Robert Glad you liked the painting😊 I always find keeping it simple and attacking the painting works for me. Hope your painting is going well. Thanks James
Loving your style. Subscribed :) I follow another UK fellow, Oliver Pyle. Such different approaches and both are so beautiful. I plein air paint the Nothern California coast where I live and you are inspiring me to not feel so limited when using white gouache to add highlights and get the effect just right. Please keep posting!
Hi Audri Thanks for your comment. I used to not use white paint, which, looking back was a mistake. I find it very useful! I’m very pleased my painting has inspired you to do new things. I’ll keep posting! 😊
It's amazing how simple the sketch is. Do you ever use value studies to supplement the sketch or do you find it unnecessary for these plein air paintings? Your video photography close up is excellent and really helps get an idea of how much water you have on the brush and then on the paper. That first wash was so fast too! I still haven't painted on paper this big before, it looks enormous.
Hi Mark. Glad you enjoyed the video. I do keep the sketch very simple. I want as much of my effort possible, going into the painting. I never do value studies, for the same reason and also I just don’t have time when I’m painting outside. Glad you enjoyed the videography, Tanya puts a lot of effort into it. Hopefully soon you’ll have a go at a big piece of paper. I do find large sheets very exciting 😅 Thanks James
7:26 Oooo! That mop looks like the W&N Synthetic Sable mop, but I can’t tell whether that’s the 1” or 1/2”. The 1/2” is on my wishlist. So, what did you think of it? How soft is it? I suspect it isn’t as soft as an actual sable.
I enjoy seeing you paint watercolours :)
Thank you so much 😀
I love watching you paint and love seeing your beautiful palette.

I enjoyed your process. It is encouraging me to try plein-air, relax and enjoy it, rather than worry about it.

Stunning painting
Thank you very much!😀
Dang that turned out! I really like how you layer up, it seems so loose initially but then tightens up at the end. Impressive
Glad you liked it. I try to keep it as simple as I can, for as long as I can.
Thanks James
Wonderful how you transform simple shapes and brush strokes into a magnificent painting in the end. Fabulous!
Hi Kathy

It’s the 1/2”. I’m really impressed with it, I’m going to use it a lot. It’s about as soft as a sable at a fraction of the cost. Well worth buying!
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Thanks so much! I did not expect the synthetic sable to be as soft as a real sable.
What microphone are you using, please?
It’s the dji wireless mic 😊
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Thanks! 😃
Mmmmhhhh!!! Don’t get it.
What a day it was. Great to be outside painting!
We do not know what you are even looking at....? Might be nice to know.
Hi Nancy.
I’ll include more next time
Thanks James
