- We've been wanting to make this video for ages, but one way or another we have never got around to filming our home city!
Here we show you a snippet of Edinburgh old town, walk up Calton Hill and take a look at a few of my favourite paintings in the National Gallery. I finish off with a sketch of the castle from Princes Street gardens.
If you have enjoyed my channel and would like to support it, 'buy me a coffee' is the perfect way to do so! All money donated goes back into making new videos and adventures in our van. Many thanks.

I LOVE Edinburgh, visited 3 times and planning to come back. Greetings from Montréal.
Hi Pierre,
It is an amazing city and I can understand why you love it so much.
When you come back next, if you see me walking in the street, say hello!
Best wishes, James
My favorite is the Sargent. Lady in the lavender dress 😍
Hi Gary,
That’s a great painting. Lady Agnew is always a favourite of mine as well.
At the moment, it’s an exhibition at Tate Britain in London.
Best wishes, James
Loved this James. What a great city. I really like your channel too, it inspires me like no other to draw and paint. Thank you. Greetings from Cumbria (though I used to live in Chichester!)
Hi, glad you enjoyed the video so much, it’s a great place to live.
I’m so happy to hear that my channel inspires you to paint and draw, if you can get excited about painting it does make a big difference.
We will be coming down to Cumbria to do some painting, within the next few months.
Always good to hear from a fellow Chichester resident!
Best wishes, James
Amazing city - the USA is so new - thank you for sharing 🙏
Hi Linda,
It is a great city!
Very old in comparison to USA, however your country is amazing with beautiful landscapes!
Best wishes, James
what i love about the view up to st giles is the layers and layers of different styles and ages of buildings. it was such a bold stroke to allow the modern renovations as it shows a city thats not stopped in time but that is vibrant ans still very much lived in.
Hi Louise,
I agree with you, that is a good point. It’s a really steep hill there as well, which adds to the effect.
Best wishes James
Thank you for Sightseeing, history, museums and your explanations!
Looking forward to see the watercolour painting of your sketching.
I whish you a nice weekend, Susanne
Hi Susanne,
Glad you enjoyed the tour of Edinburgh. It’s a great place. One short video is nowhere near enough to really show it.
Thanks for watching,
Best wishes, James
Thank you both for the tour. We were recently in Edinburgh on holiday so it was nice to see it again.
Hi Jim,
Glad you enjoyed it.
I walked through town and Prince Street almost every day and I never get tired of the beauty of Edinburgh.
Best wishes, James
Thanks, both of you, for the quick tour. Beautiful city. I was recently in Dublin and they also have an interesting national gallery. Also went to Madrid in March, a great city for art, the Thyssen museum and Sorolla's House and garden are highly recommend. Thanks.
Hi Claire,
Glad you enjoyed the tour of Edinburgh.
I’ll definitely go to all the places you suggested. Particularly Sorolla’s house. There’s a new acquisition of his work at the National Gallery in London, which is great.
Best wishes, James
The Portrait Gallery is my favourite.
I really like the Portrait Gallery as well ! The the modern galleries is great too.
I’ll have to go there to do a little video. There’s so much to see in Edinburgh!
Thanks for watching,
Best wishes, James
You're right! Edinburgh is amazing! Thank you for the tour and also the sketch at the end!
Hi Carol,
Glad you enjoyed seeing Edinburgh so much, it is wonderful. I take a walk almost every day into town and I never tire of seeing it.
I hope you can make it here one day!
Best wishes, James
Wonderful video to watch. Thank you. A painters delight!!
Thanks, Lyn,
Edinburgh is a Painters delighted. It’s very complicated and you have to prepare yourself every time you have a go at painting it.
Thanks for watching, James
A truly gorgeous city - I'd been told that by a Scotsman who studied at the botanical gardens at the University there. A painter's delightful muse, for sure!
Hi Peter,
It really is an amazing city. I only scratched the surface of it. I hope you can manage to visit one day.
The Botanics also has some great views of the city.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Thank you. Grand old cities placed gardens beautifully - yes, I would love to experience the place. The feel of the architecture is seamless and amazing. Kind regards, Peter
Many thanks to you both for this really informative tour around Edinburgh with even a quick sketch thrown in too.Loved the paintings by Adam Bruce Thomson and will definitely be finding more about him.A lovely city.
Hi Sue,
Glad you enjoyed our slightly different video and chip around Edinburgh. It is a beautiful city.
Hope you’ve managed to find out more about Adam Bruce Thompson. A really interesting painter.
Best wishes, James
So nice to see and hear Tanya. Great partnership you have.
I’m really pleased as well. It’s great to see Tanya gaining confidence in front of the camera!
Just 😍😍😍
Glad you enjoyed it. 😀
James
Thanks for a super tour of Edinburgh. I absolutely love your city and can’t wait for our trip there soon and look forward to finding the lovely viewpoints and going to the galleries 🙌❤
Hi Julie,
Glad you enjoyed the tour of Edinburgh and that it’s inspired you to come and visit. There are so many amazing viewpoints.
Thanks for watching
Best wishes, James
Enjoyed catching up on your videos. Another great video and very informative. My wife and I have tickets for this year’s tattoo and now we have extra places to visit after you showing us the galleries. Can’t wait. Thank you.
Hi Mike,
It’s great that you enjoyed that and that you’re coming up to Edinburgh soon! There’s so much to see in Edinburgh.
If you see me around, say hello.
Have fun.
Best wishes, James
Very good, I visit the galleries often and they change what's on display regularly. I like the olive trees too, i can spend hours in that one room, I've never seen a London plane, heard of them so will check it out, thank you, great wee tour of such a marvellous place.
Hi,
Glad you enjoyed the video of Edinburgh. I’m sure you know it well.
The impressionist room is my favourite at the National Gallery.
There’s so much to see in Edinburgh, that we could probably do a dozen videos and still not cover it.
Best wishes, James
I love your country!! I love the architecture and the beautiful scenery.❤
Hi Anna,
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Scotland is wonderful!
There are so many beautiful places in such a small place.
Will be going on lots more trips around Scotland and I hope you enjoy them.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt thank you! I am sure I will!
I love travels and this beautiful earth 🌍
Thank you to you both…. That was a really nice tour. I was in Edinburgh in 2018 and did The castle, Holyrood and the Royal Mile but didn’t have time for the National Gallery and Britannia . I can see why you moved there …. I really enjoyed the paintings…. I have not heard of Thomson before. Another of your inspirations besides JSSargent 😊
Glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane!
There’s so much to see and do in Edinburgh. I’m not sure you can do it in one trip.
Very happy we moved here and our daughters all agree, luckily!
I hope you’ve managed to take a look at more of Bruce Thompson’s work
Best wishes, James
Loved the trip through the city. I was there in June of 2018. It was terribly hot! Set a record of over 100 degrees! My favorite place was Iona. Beauty beyond my wildest imagination! Thank you!
Hi Kathy,
Glad you enjoyed the trip through Edinburgh, it must’ve brought a few memories back for you. I remember that heat in 2018. the grass where I live was very brown and very crunchy when I walked on it.
I’ll be going to Iona soon, so I hope you enjoy that one!
Best wishes, James
Hi, thanks for such an amazing vid of Edinburgh and the art galleries. Love the stormy sea watercolour by Adam Bruce Thomson :) 👍
Hi Jem,
Glad you enjoyed seeing Edinburgh in the galleries.
That stormy sea painting was really amazing. Glad you like it as well.
Best wishes, James
Thanks so much for the Art and beauty of Edinburgh and for sharing your own skill and love for painting , I hope you find this as funny as I do, my real name is Daniel Radcliffe.
Hi Daniel!
Glad you enjoyed our visit around Edinburgh.
You have an amazing name!
I’m sure you get more attention with your name than I do with mine. From my perspective, I have to thank JK Rowling, as Potter has a newfound status!
Like you, I find the whole thing very funny😂
Best wishes, James
Wonderful camera work Tania. Looking forward to seeing your Glasgow painting James. I had a big smile at the couple of watercolours of Iona in that particular gallery and looking forward to your painting on Iona. Quite a few years ago now we spent a retreat for a week on this beautiful island. I certainly wasn’t painting then and not even much of a photographer . I need to dig out the booklets I bought at the time and have a go! As for Edinburgh, certainly a beautiful city with a delicious hot chocolate shop down the Mile. Thank you both for a terrific video.
Hi Noel,
Glad you enjoyed the video so much. Tanya’s camera is getting much better. We’ve just bought something to help in that department as well so I hope you noticed it in the next video.
Glad you know Iona it’s a fantastic place, will be going there soon so fingers crossed with the weather!
I’ll have a look for the hot chocolate shop on the Royal Mile!
Best wishes, James
Nice video James, glad you included a sketch at the end. It reminds me that I haven't been to Edinburgh for quite a while. I'll have to come over the bridge from Fife for a visit. Hopefully the exhibition at the City Art Gallery will still be on.
Hi Colin,
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Luckily, Edinburgh is not too far away from you.
Adam Bruce Thompson’s exhibition is really great, so well worth the trip into town
Let me know what you think of it when you go.
Best wishes, James
Great video James very informative thank you.
Thanks, Philip,
Glad you enjoyed it. !!
Well , well James you have excelled yourself yet again. Loved the trip through the city and it’s nice to see your wife involved, I think you have something going here - a travel vlog. The clarity of your descriptions the journey through the art gallery. Thanks for introducing Bruce Thompson to us.
Hi Robert,
Glad you enjoyed the slightly different video and I’m glad you enjoyed seeing Tanya in the video
I’ve enjoyed Bruce Thompsons paintings for quite a few years now and it’s great that there’s finally a good exhibition in Edinburgh on him.
Thanks for watching,
Best wishes, James
Great vid mate!
Thought you were going to pop into the stunning Assembly Halls,as you showed us the views at 7 mins!
Hi Gary,
Glad you enjoyed the video.
There so many places to see.
I will do some more videos for sure, and I’ll definitely get to the assembly hall (the Royal Academy)
They had an excellent so William Gillies exhibition recently.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Cheers James! The land around Granton and the area between Leith and Portobello has so much potential!
thank you very pleasant video change from watching football on TV. Interested to learn you are from Chichester, Midhurst is my home town but now residing in Ipswich. Look forward to watch some more of your inspirational watercolour painting.
Hi Alf.
How interesting. I moved to Chichester when I was 30, however I grew up in Midhurst, so absolutely it’s my hometown as well. I still have a very soft spot for it! For a long time I lived in Edinburgh Square then I moved to the Fairway.
Best wishes James
I am an Edinburger and really enjoyed that video. One correction- it’s Princes Street Gardens rather than Princes Gardens .
Hi Mairi,
Glad you enjoyed walking around Edinburgh.
You’re right, it’s definitely Princes Street Gardens! I do have a tendency of shortening things to make things easier to say.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Are you going to do any more videos around Edinburgh?
Such a long history and the gorgeous architectural evidence. I think about my own country and I come up with….NYC.
Hi Linda,
It is very old place, Edinburgh. The Georgians made a wonderful contribution to the beauty of the city. It’s also very hilly which makes it even more dramatic.
I never been to New York, but maybe one day. They’ve some great galleries there.
Thanks for watching, James
Edinburgh Castle looks so imposing sitting on that high rock
It really is imposing. I think what makes Edinburgh so great are the hills. There are so many great viewpoints up high and the castle dominates the city.
I'd love to see your watercolour style of Edinburgh Castle
Thank you for this nice tour of Edinburgh. I agree with you about Rubens, the portrait of that old man is magnificent. At 10.28 we can see, for a few seconds unfortunately, "The Three Graces" by Antonio Canova, one of the most beautiful examples of neo-classical sculpture. The original is in St. Petersburg, Russia. This copy was commissioned in 1815 by the Duke of Bedford.
Hi, glad you’re enjoyed the tour around Edinburgh. A beautiful place and there’s so much more to see!
I agree the three graces is awesome. It’s a permanent fixture at the Gallery so always nice to walk around it.
Who knows I might even go to Saint Petersburg to see the original one day.
Best wishes, James
@@JamesPotterAboutArt Thank you very much, James, I wish you and your wife a nice weekend and a beautiful summer. Greetings from Buenos Aires.

Nice to know where you’re from. A long way from Scotland.
the 27 my goat
Hi Lewis
Glad you enjoyed that one.
James
The Scot monument was designed by Sauron’s architect 😂.
Ahh interesting
The Scottish Crown favours are absolutely more impressive than the English ones, seeing there are no English Crown jewels, which Cromwell melted/destroyed. The jewels kept in London are UK assets, equally owned by Scotland & England. Nobody has been crowned King or Queen of England, since Charles I.
Hi Mark,
That’s an interesting point. Hadn’t thought about Cromwells effects.
He also sold a huge quantity of paintings of the Royal collection, which was very sad.
Best wishes, James
Woohoo! First! 😂
Excellent!😀
I live here. I honestly think it’s a dump!
That’s so funny. The traffic system is the worst part Edinburgh!
From a Painters and visual point of view it is amazing, there is a lot of beauty in the city and I like the hills around and in the city, but the weather is terrible!
Give it time
Harry Potty 😂😂😂. Doesn’t know the name of his own son 🤣🤣.
That made me laugh as well😂

Lovely little whistlestop tour But missing the one o'clock gun and Greyfriars Kirk 8o(
I'll get back sometime for a quick visit, but those tourist hoardes ... Them and getting rid of the Tattoo seating are the main reasons I dont like Edinburgh at this time of year.
Hi William,
Glad you enjoyed the tour. When I started the video I thought it was going to be pretty simple but then I realise how much there is to show and talk about in Edinburgh. I’m sure we can go back to Greyfriars Kirk and the 1 o’clock gun.
There are an unbelievable number of tourists in town at the moment and it’s only going to get more when the festival starts.
When the tattoo seating comes down I always give a sigh of relief!
Best wishes, James
