As always I'll offer my experience with Alfa Romeo reliability, just in case it convinces anyone reading this to get one. My moms 2018 Giulia Veloce that we have since new, 70k+ km on the odo, basically 0 issues. It once changed the infotainment language to german for about 20 seconds after sitting in the Italian sun on a trip in the middle of summer (40 degree celsius weather) and that's the most glaring problem I can think of. Car gets used in all weathers and conditions and is dead reliable no matter if it's freezing outside or it's getting pushed hard on twisty roads on the hottest days of summer. Amazing to drive.

The Volvo EX30 seems to be a more compelling package for the price. I just can't get over the fact that this is a Dodge Hornet, even though this came first. Gremlins at that mileage point are inexcusable as well. Also, the amount of people saying I "drive a toenail" would eventually drive me nuts - would have to debadge that part. Color is phenomenal, wheels too!
Great review. Having testing this for some time now, here were a few other points of feedback: - In N (normal / natural) mode, the Tonale blows through it's electric charge, leaving you wanting for power when it runs out. This usage should be baseline in the A (advanced efficiency) mode. Definitely a software tweak required to balance out both engine uses. - The 1.3T gas engine runs significantly better with premium - better power delivery and fuel economy. Tested with all levels (91/94/98) and it is a night and day difference. Alfa is doing customers a disservice by not recommending it. - Why is the ability to enable adaptive damping disabled in N mode (and only available in D)? - There is no ability to change the regen braking strength in each mode. D mode automatically enables aggressive regen (which can't be adjusted) which makes cruising in this mode a chore.
I traded in my Guilia for a 2024 Tonale and the dealership gave me an amazing offer off the MSRP. So far knock on wood none of these issues have happened to me and I have over 1000 miles on mine. 😊 My Guilia also gave me no problems for the whole 3 years of driving it, I’m definitely a fan of Alfa’s coming from a long line of owning Mazdas. ❤
True can’t compare an Alfa with Mazda. I had a Mazda 3 in 2013 brand new and it gave me nothing but trouble I sold it immediately when the warranty expired. My Giulia on the other hand has been perfectly reliable. Plus the driving experience of an Alfa is on another level compared to the Mazda
We can't give these toenails away at our Dodge Jeep RAM Alfa Romeo dealership. We have a ton of them with $10,000+ off MSRP and people still aren't convinced. And yes they have been awful with reliability even though they have not been out very long. These are the cars we stuff folks into that have bad credit and or tons of negative equity and are willing to buy anything.
I think the tragedy is more on the Italian side than on the American. It's a blessing that Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth are still around. Ask the rest of the world outside the States and u probably would get this answer
every car does, it's just some have a wider threshold before giving off warnings to benefit the perceived quality, which Alfa has always historically been ignorant about
For $73k CDN, I’d pick a Durango R/T, Citadel, or R/T Plus. I get it that they dont compete directly, and have VERY different fuel consumption. But you get seating for 2 more, a big 5.7l v8, more offroad capabilities, and more room for less money. Plus theres a lot more Durangos out there if you need parts. You gonna be waiting a while for parts backordered from Italy.
Sad to see bugs are still rampant. My wife got rid of her jeep compass because the bugs got so bad it started rolling the windows down in the cold. 5 years later and the issues just moved to a new body.
Hey guys, I too love the wheels, did you notice at the 9:09, 14:07 and 16:34 parts of your video the light hitting the wheels gives it a “halo” look..further demonstrating who awesome the wheels are…
The Tonale came a little too late. Crossover plug in hybrid with low electric range is a tough sell these days. Especially at that price they're asking!
When I had a Stelvio, I was getting service at a joint Dodge-Alfa-Jeep dealership. My loaners were all Jeep Renegade & Compass. I did try the Fiat-Mazaratti dealership, which services Alfa. Their loaners were all Beats edition Fiat 500. Service was pretty similar with only difference was the Italian dealership was next to a park not on dealership row.

I have a 2018 Giulia QV. I absolutely adore the car and it's been a dream. That said, it has the same sun problems, a lesser blower motor sound, and some other funky things. It's nothing serious and in my eyes it gives the car character. If I wanted something to work all the time and have no character I wouldn't have bought an Alfa :)
Yuri starting the video off saying “Italian cars have done nothing wrong everyone should buy them” is like saying everyone should try eating tide pods at least once if your life because it never hurt anyone 😂
My dad got this it looks real good but the shift knob and driving suck mad balls but the mileage is great tho very nice city car for tight roads while remaining somewhat practical (way less practical and more boring than the stelvio we had)
I seem to remember another review complaining that the Toenail's lane keep assist sucks and can't be turned off - probably a good thing that it's broken on this example.
I shopped the Alfa Giulia a few years ago and in the Ft Myers market, they shared the Fiat dealership across the lot from the Stellantis dealership. And the experience was 100% Fiat. Still interested a few years later after we moved to another city and drove another one against a 330i and it just couldn’t compete. 3 Series is so much more refined. Loved the styling though, but glad I didn’t pull the trigger in retrospect, especially in this car market.
The collision system warning is interesting because we recently had the Dodge Hornet to test and my wife noticed the exact same thing. Good to know you found a cause… although I’m not sure that makes it ok. 😂 Also the rear view mirror on our Hornet just didn’t move. Like at all. For no reason….
Heh. CDJR tech here. The perfect car to take to the La Rose Bakery on Bronte Street for jalapeno sourdough bread and the 20 foot long desert counter. The hot lunch counter is nice too lol.
Hey, do they have, or will they have, a quadrifoglio version of the tonale? I saw one of these on the road yesterday. The red looks amazing as well… that yellow on the hornet looks good too. Nice colours.
The Quadrafoglio should never be applied to this platform IMHO. Leave it to the sublime, never to be repeated (actual Alfa, as opposed to Stelllantis) platform found in the Giulia or Stelvio. Grab one while you can!

i live in italy. if you were to tell engineers that front assist would not work when car is facing to the morning sun they would say "what do you expect car cant see the road" he just woke up stop breaking his balls
I drive a tonale veloce 1.5. Its not plug in hybrid. I dont have the issues you had with the car. Maybe the european cars are better. For instance, I did 15k kms. And no leg in the infotainment.
Can you guys test drive/review the Tonale with the 2.0 litre gasoline engine? Honestly the plug-in hybrid price, even after the $5,000 federal rebate in Ontario is just TOO expensive! The ⛽️ only version is significantly less costly and competes with a lot of other premium brands. So please test the 2.0 ICE version. Thank you!
At dealerships, you're paying the same or more for a Tonale Veloce than a Stelvio Veloce. They just don't get it. The Stelvio is much more desirable IMO.
You guys did not give me the warm and fuzzy about buying this Alfa. Driving dynamics are important in any vehicle playing in the urban jungle or busy highways.
Giulia QV, 4C, 8C and now the Stradale 33 are true Alfa's :) all the rest are just made to make money in order to not die as a Brand :p great video (as always!!)
I’ve wanted an Alfa so badly for years and was initially excited when they came back to the USA years ago. I test drove the Giulia and the check engine light was on- ON the BRAND NEW car the dealership supplied for the test drive!!! Yikes- that ended my desire- despite the great looks (including amazing looking round wheels) and fun to drive experience. For those that have more than one car- maybe ok, but not for a sole car.
You should get one. You dodged a bullet on buying it new. Depreciation is horrible on them. However, buy a used depreciated one and they are pretty reliable. Don't compare it to a Lexus, but compared to a BMW, Volvo, or Audi they are comparable. Also the buy in price is much lower than the lexus if you get one 3 yrs old.
luuuuuv you 2! Bob and Doug mc kenzie of the car review world. Bless the interwebs for bringing you guys to the great unwashed masses. we are not worthy!
I'm hoping alpha will do away with glass cockpits and maintain their classy Italian interiors. Leaving the tactile knobs, and keep a very minimal console that's embedded into the dash not sticking out like an iPad, address the reliability issues and this car will dominate the market.
Would take a Lexus NX plug-in over this any day. Love the styling of the Tonale way more. However, if I’m buying a car, I’d prefer to spend more time with it than the loaner car of the closest dealership while waiting or repairs.
The collision systems turning off in direct sunlight is due to the brightness effectively blinding them. It's telling you "I can't see; you're on your own" just like if they got covered in grime. I wouldn't call it a problem as much as it is the system being quite sensitive to light. It would also shut off if the system was too hot from sitting in a hot car in direct sunlight
I find it interesting how the Hornet broke on the fast lane car review and this Tonale wasn't working properly on this review, as an Italian American, it's shameful to see that Italians still can't make a working car! such a shame!
A Honda pilot died and had to be towed during an @everydaydriver review. The sun blinds the collision avoidance camera in the dash. Would it feel different if it displayed a message in the cluster instead of illuminating the error light?
Let's be real. In a Alfa Romeo, this is perfection. In a Dodge (the Hornet), that's terrible! However, I plan to buy myself a used Stelvio Quadrifoglio (2019 or 2021) or a brand new Tonale Veloce.
I'm Italian guys, and seeing Tonale's on the street on a daily base I can confirm this car doesn't not look good at all! We all wondering what kind of drugs they use at Alfa Romeo to make such a great brand going down this way! It's not sporty, it's not good looking, it's not RWD based! Giulia and Stelvio have been a great meteora, instead of making a Giulia SW or a new Giulietta (C segment car in Europe that could rival against Golf, 1 Series, A3, A-class..) they are making these useless cans based on shitty jeep renegade platform that simply don't match the greatness and the history of the brand. Oh and by the way, the new Alfa Milano is going to be presented, guess what? Another pointless SUV
@@jonlosito2004 100% - Tonale is just a badge engineered Jeep Compass/Renegade and looks horrible. Giulia and Stelvio are real Alfas, built on the Giorgio platform and were the late Sergio Marchionne's babies.
I love Italian cars, but this is just ridiculous. So many problems with a brand new car in 2023, no other manufacturer has this problem other than maybe Maserati. The ongoing quality and reliability issues is why these brands don't do better, and with the backing of Stelantis there is no excuse anymore.
It's an Italian car, what do you expect? It would be great if they had longer development cycles and more thorough product testing before release, but it doesn't seem like it is going to happen!
Sadly if you bring this to a dodge dealer unless they are dodge and Alfa they won’t be able to help you as we cannot process Alfa warranty claims or even order parts for Alfa products even though they are the same parts when it sees the vin of a Alfa it blocks it. I work at a Chrysler dodge Jeep Ram Fiat dealer. We do service the Hornet though. Only reason I’d go with this over a hornet is if the dealer is the same distance away lol cause finding an Alfa dealer can be very difficult
Let’s be real though, dumb baby monitor features like lane-keep assist not working is hardly a “reliability issue.” We should really think of “reliability” as “does it get me to where I need to go.” In which case, pretty much every modern combustion car will do as long as it’s not well over 100k miles and it’s being maintained. The reputation of Alfa Romeo’s being unreliable comes from when they left you stranded somewhere - THAT’S legitimate unreliability. But things like Lane-keep being broken is a feature, not a bug, because Alfa didn’t want to add it anyway, their boring exec bosses made them add it. That’s just another feature for sales people to convince your non-enthusiast spouse that it’s a special car… and you don’t correct them because you’re just happy your spouse is now on the same page as you about buying it. Alfa knows what’s up… Remove all these features, fuck the cup holders (figuratively of course), and drive!

I drive a tonale veloce 1.5. Its not plug in hybrid. I dont have the issues you had with the car. Maybe the european cars are better. For instance, I did 15k kms. And no leg in the infotainment.
I gotta admit, it sure does look great, but man it would be tough to buy one after watching the review
Favourite part of this video was the Greek intro music for an Italian car ;)
Ok but like. Could be Italian right lol
I guess they did not find the collision warning issue, because Italian do not go out so early in the morning lol
You got me with the title, I was legit just not going to bother watching it.
This is a brand new car in every way Normal to have hiccups at the beginning, the Stelvio and Guilia are solid
Is lack-luster quality a cultural thing at Alfa Romeo? Is a shame because nobody does better car design than the Italians.
What an endearing video today😀
Man your intro songs always wins 😁
My 2018 Giulia did the same collision system unavailable when facing low sun. Alfa things 😁
😂🤣
Pretty weird how the Giulia/Stelvio doesn’t have these issues
Can you guys test drive/review the Tonale with the 2.0 litre gasoline engine? Honestly the plug-in hybrid price, even after the $5,000 federal rebate in Ontario is just TOO expensive!
The ⛽️ only version is significantly less costly and competes with a lot of other premium brands. So please test the 2.0 ICE version. Thank you!
The music at the beginning is not Italian though. It's greek and the main instrument is bouzouki!
Yuri likes to spend time in the garage instead of driving 🤣
At dealerships, you're paying the same or more for a Tonale Veloce than a Stelvio Veloce. They just don't get it. The Stelvio is much more desirable IMO.
You guys did not give me the warm and fuzzy about buying this Alfa. Driving dynamics are important in any vehicle playing in the urban jungle or busy highways.
I think it’s nice the car is trying to tell you not to stare at the sun
Giulia QV, 4C, 8C and now the Stradale 33 are true Alfa's :) all the rest are just made to make money in order to not die as a Brand :p great video (as always!!)
The wheels look sick in shot while turning
Yuri sounds like he has a gun to his head defending this car😂
Thanks hoser
Government should create a currency that "sometimes works" for these "nice when works" expensive car companies.
I'm hoping alpha will do away with glass cockpits and maintain their classy Italian interiors. Leaving the tactile knobs, and keep a very minimal console that's embedded into the dash not sticking out like an iPad, address the reliability issues and this car will dominate the market.
The active lane assist is not available because the camera in front and the windscreen is too dirty and needs to be cleaned.
Merry Christmas guys!
Which is better to drive?
And which would actually you purchase long-term? No leases.
X1, GLB, Q3, Xc40, countryman, NX, or?
Tonale all day every day
Would take a Lexus NX plug-in over this any day.
We’ve driven hundreds, if not thousands, of cars and this is the only one to ever have this problem in sunlight
I fully don't understand Yuri's taste in vehicles, just didn't think any car person could find the new age crossovers redeemable. Not that it matters
I am so tired of Italians making great cars that just fall apart in reliability. When will it change? Is a Lexus NX not a competitor?
IMO this phev is very interesting
I find it interesting how the Hornet broke on the fast lane car review and this Tonale wasn't working properly on this review, as an Italian American, it's shameful to see that Italians still can't make a working car! such a shame!
The sun comment has also occurred on both my 22 Mazda3 and 19 CX9.
Great looking but those small problems would bug me
Man Im too ocd. Id be flipping out at those quirks. Especially that fan. 😂
Is there a fully electric version? Please review that. Thank you guys.
How does this paint color compare to Isle of Mann Green from BMW? Looks similar, and definitely pops on this car!
A Honda pilot died and had to be towed during an @everydaydriver review. The sun blinds the collision avoidance camera in the dash. Would it feel different if it displayed a message in the cluster instead of illuminating the error light?
You pick Italians with your heart not your head. Cars AND women.
Yuri is the type of guy where if Vinfast had an italian flag he would name it car of the year! 😂😂😂
You’re not wrong lmao - Jakub
1000% agree with your statement!
