He turned a negative into what he thought was a positive. Another layer is It’s a reverse take on don’t judge a book by its cover. It also points the sad truth about a lot of men being dogs that can’t control their most basic urges and how there are always women out there willing to play along. The character has a frog tongue and an eyeball on his back (which seemed to "wink" at the video for Cold Heart). It was totally on brand for Sarah Sherman's surreal trademark comedy. How was it making fun of people with facial differences? This joke is more so mocking/satirizing the old-timey movies that were basically "Look at this disgusting freak, but he's an artistic genius so the woman is able to look past her monstrous visage!" In this sketch, it ends with it being revealed that while Peter is a great playwright, he's not some pure and perfect person that needs to be raised up by a benevolent woman. In fact, he's kind of your average cheating a-hole who has no problems attracting women. If anything, this sketch says "Hey, some people look different. Their physical differences don't make them pure, perfect, souls, nor does it make them evil, wicked abominations. They are just normal people and can be nice of dicks just like anyone else."

It is no longer parody when it closely resembles the very real experience of being visually different, which many people are, and they are judged harshly on appearance alone by much of the world that thinks that is ok to do. It is not parody when it is never made "ok" in the sketch that he is a person, just made worse in that he is also ANOTHER "bad" thing, a cheater (yes cheating is bad), so the audience was "right" to be repulsed by him in the first place,

Also, the absolute absurdity of his persona made it clear that there is no real-life counterpart to the Anomaly. He could have been a minotaur. It still would have been a brilliant satire. It is hard to convey how offensive this sketch is to disfigured people (1% of the world's population).
Disfigured people are often portrayed in the media as being evil, pathetic or unlovable. These portrayals do profound damage to a community which already contends with stigma, harassment, bullying and hate crimes.
In this recent sketch, the Anomalous Man is seen as
    1) isolated, unloved, with horrific self-esteem,
    2) the woman who loves him is seen as heroic for doing so.
    3) His appearance is relentlessly mocked
    4) The fact that he is sexually active is the big joke.
I know SNL can do better. SNL is a vaunted show, gracing our country with many laughs over the decades. But this sketch did not do SNL credit.
We need to educate people about prejudice toward disfigured people, and the media's role in perpetuating this stigma. To learn more, please watch: ua-cam.com/video/zD9KhXQOED8/v-deo.html

He writes alluring adaptations of his life of woe as a lonely broken man shut off from the world. Trap set and snap. She ignores all the flags, like him literally bringing nothing to the table but a briefcase of dust, his horrific table manners, his THIRD EYE FFS. You get it yet? He’s weaseled his way into a cushy life and can’t even return the favor with faithfulness. All he brings her is down, and like the classic conman, he’s got multiple backups available just in case she catches on, he simply slides into the arms of another woman. Looks like it, and one that's been a long time coming too. You see, back in the early 1980s when Jean Doumanian was in charge of the show, they did a mashup spoof of "The Elephant Man" and "Ordinary People". Like most Jean Doumanian sketches, it was not as funny as the idea suggested because nothing was done to make it funny. Then ABC Fridays did their version called The Elephant Joke Man, where The Elephant Man is hated because he tells lame jokes (pretty sure "elephant jokes" are what we call "dad jokes" now: just corny one-liners that are either groanworthy or funny in a family-friendly way). Now that one was good, but it wasn't that sprawling, ambitious sketch that Fridays normally does to prove that they're better than SNL at the time. This sketch makes up for both those shortcomings.
