    Love North Wales, by chance, we've ended up staying near to RAF airfields and its great fun - from the ground - to be near Talyllyn lake or the Mach Loop, I've also friends in Dinas Mawddwy too. For GA aviators, one needs to have eyes in back of ones head though. EDIT:- Love Caernarfon museum too, the new cafe looks nice, last time, I was there, by car, we had a Sea King give us a wave as they headed off into the murk to rescue some poor soul. IIRC Caernarfon is the home (birth place) of air-sea rescue.

    Watching that brought back a few memories. One of my favourite flights was Barton to Caernarfon, lunch and then back to Barton for a final brew. Seen that approach view a few hundred times, although it was 27/09 back then. Since moved to sunnier climes, do miss flying from Barton though (1994 - 2007). Thanks for the memory Rory.

      Rory On Air funny enough, I was going to check out his channel yesterday as you spoke about him in one of your videos! The airport he is based at is only down from the road from me, I went there last year for an interview for a scholarship, but sadly didn’t get it. One thing that I would love to know about is costs about landing at set airports etc when you hire out a plane, is there an easy way of finding information about this; or maybe a future video idea?

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  5 років тому

      Rory On Air that’s cheaper than I thought! You should definitely come and try out Staverton airport (Gloucestershire), it’s lovely - proper nice busy general aviation airport with a nice pub/cafe too... but I think it would be really interesting if you involved like the price of the landing fee for the airport You’re landing at. Will you be going to RIAT this year at fairford?

    Hello Rory. Your videos are very enjoyable and for me interesting to watch as you show people some of the workings of what happens in flight. I see that something is not right with Valley Radio as on another video you had a similar problem with them. Did you ever find out what the problem was? Anyway this video I can relate to more as this area I live in (Holywell mountain) and visit most of the airfields around the North West, on my motorbike, Keep up the good work and might see you in the air as you buzz my house. larro powell thank you! I try to keep a mix of technical flying stuff, mainly the radio work sight seeing fun on my films. It’s always a balance as some people prefer one element to the other. Andrew Martin no, I never got to the bottom of why Valley weren’t responding. If it happens again I’ll call them and ask. I tend to go round via the coast and then when I can see what the cloud is like over the mountain I decide whether to come back over the top or repeat my outbound track on the way home. Both are good views.

    Great video as always. Rather unfortunate with the seagul but at least you got a story out of it :P
    Just a bit of feedback, it would have been good to have a bit (even just narration) about anything you did after not getting a response on the radio. Presumably you checked you were on the right frequency and such?
    One other thing that I meant to ask about, I think a few videos back you mentioned you had a drone which you were looking to use for some footage. I recently bought one as well and they are great fun and get some great shots but, from what I read, using the footage on UA-cam can be classed as commercial use (due to the monetisation) which you need a license for. Have you looked into or have more information on this?

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  5 років тому

      Dale Edwards hi Dale, the seagull thing was very unfortunate - but you’re right - it was a good story. Thanks for the suggestion about the what I did after getting no response, I will do my best to include that kind of thing in future. I double checked again the frequency and made 2 further attempts to call them. On the final attempt I gave my position, altitude and routing and then changed to Hawarden.
      I do have a drone and plan to use it but haven’t heard anything about issues with UA-cam. I will look into it. Worst case I’ll turn off monetisation on that video.

    • @g-de
      @g-de 5 років тому +1

      @@RoryOnAir In that case I'm glad I flagged it. I'd hate for you to get in the CAA's bad books and it might be a good thing to chat about in a video. I think there's more than a few drone owners who aren't aware of the regulations around flying them so always good to raise awareness.
      This seems to be the relevant CAA page: www.caa.co.uk/Commercial-industry/Aircraft/Unmanned-aircraft/Small-drones/Regulations-relating-to-the-commercial-use-of-small-drones/

      @RoryOnAir  5 років тому

    Love the videos Rory. Do you know the training difference between learning to fly a microlight like yours and a C152? Only reason I ask is that I started in a C152 but have only done 8 hours in a 18 month period (don't ask). I'd have to restart again to continue my training but looking to switch to a microlight aircraft. Seems you can do pretty much what I'm looking for in a microlight (uk days out) and if the training is less in terms of man hours I think I'd go down this route. Many thanks and keep up the good work. Hope to bump into you (in the cafe) at sleap one day :)

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  5 років тому

      Markus Witcomb Hi Markus, sounds like microlights would be perfect for what you want to do. The C42 or Eurostar will out perform a C152 in almost every area and if it’s its daytime VFR with 1 passenger you want to do, it’s much more affordable. I would book a trial lesson with a school and see for yourself. That hour counts towards your licence. You’ll still have to do the 25 hours but you’ll be that bit ahead of the game having some flying experience already. Good luck and hopefully see you at a cafe soon.
