Love! DEEP PTHALO GREEN with a skosh of purple! It’s a dream!
Oooh nice!
Sap green, Olive green, Hooker's green dark...and any of them mixed with red! I started watching this and then grabbed my art journal and started painting with you. I enjoy doing this because I'm here, you're here, so why not paint along? I'm having so much fun with this tonight. THANKS, as always.
Ohh knowing even one person is painting along makes me sooo happy! XO and Olive Green 💯
The sweet peas need tendrils! 🙀
What is a sweet pea without the tendrils??😳
It is the perfect opportunity to play with tendrils! 🤪
I love those little frilly bits!🥰
Great video Kristy!❤️❤️❤️
They do need the tendrils!! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
The brushes. No, really. THE BRUSHES!!! They. Change. EVERYTHING!!!
Ok, I’m done gushing (haha probably not but I’ll try anyway). I’ve done your tutorials before and done “ok” with them but today I was able to do this tutorial with my new set of the Art for Joy’s Sake brush set. I normally use either the synthetic squirrel brushes from Cheap Joes or the Princeton Aqua Elite and…
…WHOA. The difference is huge, at least it was for me! I was even just playing in my sketchbook (a Canson XL) and as much as I know that watercolor paper is usually the “piece de resistance”, the vines still looked really nice!
I can’t wait to try these brushes out on my watercolor mandalas. Thanks so much for making these available and affordable!
I’m soooo glad to hear it!
I never painthanging vines, but after watching this video I certainly will. Thank you!
Wahoo glad to hear it!
Dang! Southern speak! I LOVED this so much. I have an obsession with leaves in general. This is just what I needed to get out of a slump! Totally doing the next one! You ROCK!
Awesome!!!
I love, Windsor and Newton, Sap Green. Straight up or other colors added.
Nice!
This makes me giddy. I love doodling leaves and vines. ❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful!!
Oooo lately for greens I have been enjoying Hooker's Green with a mix of Viridian green. MMM! Delicious!
Oooh yes that’s a good one!!
I am still watching. Just read some comments. Green is my "signature" color. Right now I love White Knights green with a splash of white knights quin violet!
Need to try!!
I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found your channel and your style of painting. It has been so freeing to start to learn your style of painting. I also purchased your brushes and am in love with them!
Wonderful! Thank you so much!!!
Oh how i love that honeysuckle vine! Looking forward to painting it, thanks Kristy!
Oh I hope you do!!
Yes I draw them a lot. Make frames in my journal, doodle them all the time. Thanks for some new inspiration!
Mid watch, I had to look up your channel. I want to be better at watercolor. I’m currently making carrot people, gesture. I love the moment two colors merge...on the clothing of my carrot people. These leaves look like a great way to practice strokes, getting my watercolor fix with the merging of colors. My ears perked up when you said, “I don’t want you to get caught up in what I use.” That is how I have an M. Graham collection of watercolors. Early on I tried arches wc paper, I noticed a HUGE difference from all the other brands I tried previously. I appreciate your gentle teaching style. You have a heart to part your knowledge, it’s a blessing to me. Thank you.
I’m so glad you’re here and I think too this will be a great exercise for versatile practice strokes :)
It's so funny you posted this as I didn't know what to paint last night so I made some vines. I definitely needed this tutorial. You have been helping me so much! Wish you were here in person! 😊
What a coincidence!
My fav greens are DS Apatite green genuine, undersea green and serpentine genuine. Can’t get enough of them.
Wahooo!!
Daniel Smith Greens are Rare Earth Green & Spring Green, Winsor & Newton Greens are Aqua Green & Permanent Sap Green and Sakura Koi Greens are Permanent Green Pale as some of my favorites.
Oh wow thank you!!
@@KristyRice You’re welcome!
Love Aqua Green!!! Winsor Green... and a Greenish blue Seascapes by Da Vinci! (New color)
Love vines, love these sweet designs.
Thanks!
Hi Kristy! I made myself a goal to donate 100 hand painted bookmarks to our small library , so these vines will be perfect. Great timing. Thanks so much.
Oh my gosh that’s awesome!
Very helpful video, Kristy! I think the sweet pea is my fav…❤ even without the tendrils.. haha you are incredibly talented! Thanks for sharing your gift with us!
Ride or die green would be M. Graham's Sap green, it's in All my palettes. It mixes well with other greens, or any color, and gives them the realistic look I love, and just shines on it's own whether it's watered down or cream consistency. It also has the best "whoosh!" when adding it to a wet spot on the paper. So satisfying! I'm definitely going to try out this method of vines. They'll make great bookmarks! 👍🏻
Sometimes, UA-cam suggestions get it right. I cannot wait to try some vines, but I'm doing acrylics. I just made a display case, and I want to paint vines all over it. I was thinking something like a creeping fig. I was just looking at my creeping fig on my fence and just thought "wow it's so thick and overlapping but there's so many directions and shapes going on with the vines with such wonderful cascading at the top" so I thought it would be fun to paint vines looking like they're going from the back of the shelves and cascading forward over the sides and through the cracks in the back and stuff. I was scared that I'd mess it up, but I think I can do it just fine now.
You will do just fine!! Let me know how it goes!!
@@KristyRice Thanks! So far, I did a little color study and then covered a page with vines, taking your advice but using kind of an in-between full and sparse pattern. But I layered them again and again and again with ever lightening colors until all the paint I had put on my palette was gone, and that was an excellent choice. The leaves went from deep blue green to increasingly yellow to magenta and light purple. It made me much more confident, and I think I'll do the same kind of thing on my shelves. I'll try to pour out just what I need, but I'll use up everything on my palette before pouring more. It made such unexpected color patterns that turned out so beautiful.
@@KristyRice Second update: I just did a little bit, but it's already really stunning, I think. I'm really enjoying myself, and I might make vines my Comfort Subject and just paint myself into a hole of structures being consumed by invasive vines on all my furniture... It's the exact aesthetic I want to be surrounded by constantly I think.
This was SO much fun...took out my journal & followed along, too.
Used your brushes...which are my new brushes that I love btw.
My fave greens are DS green-gold & viridian & a random Jade green that I have that looks like my Jadeite vintage china. My sister calls it "Martha Stewart" Green...!!!...LOL...
Ha!! So glad you had fun :)
Oh greens! They are one of my favorites. There are so many that I love in the Daniel Smith brand: undersea green, green gold, chromium oxide, cascade green, pyrelene green, and green appetite. Thank you for such great tutorials. I've been painting along on this one and I've saved a few more of your videos to paint along with in the near future.
I’m so glad you’re painting with me!!
Oh, yes! Pyrelene green is beautiful and another of my favorites too!
Just what I needed to practice. Love adding leaves and been stuck adding the same old basic ones 😊
Yay glad it’s going to be helpful :)
Great video! Who can’t use a vine here and there! 💜
That’s what I thought lol!! Thanks :)
It’s so weird that as a face painter I used vines as my signature “go to” look yet now that I do more watercolour I’ve never thought of incorporating vines. Can’t wait to pull out my paints! Yay!! Thanks Kristy. Love 💕 your work!
Oh yay go for it!!
Also… I bought your brushes and LOVE them. Thanks for your great tutorials. So inspiring. I watch them pretty much every day. It makes me feel like you are my sister😂😂😂.
I’m so glad…sister :)
I don't use vines a lot. But I want to add them to my florals
They are super helpful when compositions get rough :)
Got some daggers…gonna play with this tonite!
Great!
My favorite green is Daniel Smith's Undersea Green. It does some lovely granulating and its just fun to use like for evergreen trees and.
How awesome :)
I love my Daniel Smith Phthalo Yellow Green and Cascade Green. Both mix well with other colours to increase the range of tones.
Cascade green IS magic!
@@KristyRice absolutely! I love how it separates..so magical.
I use DS Green Apatite Genuine, Cascade Green, Undersea Green, and Green Gold most. I also have Rich Green Gold, Jadeite Genuine, and Perylene Green, which I use less frequently. All gorgeous and rich.
All amazing selects!
Have used vines , but on greeting cards in ink adding flowers or lattice
Sounds pretty :)
@@KristyRice haven't painted in a long while--spouse with alzheimers and my own old age issues. Using you to rekindle the flame. Thank you
I love this video, and I can't wait to try painting vines! I do have trouble knowing where to put them in a composition, but I'm guessing you'll include some in your upcoming composition video! Thank you for another very helpful video! 😊
Oooh I will!!!
This is great!!!! I even can follow along with my new Art for Joy's Sake brushes!!!
Yes you can!!!
Yes, I love using vines! Thanks for some new ideas- LOVE your channel!
Glad you like it!
Lovin these vines!!
Thank you!!
Had a lot of fun with this one…will probably add a few more details…
So fun! Favorite green = Paynes Gray + warm yellows. Thank you 🙏 💙🌵🌵🌵
Ohhhhh nice!
So excited to have found your channel. Sooo many great-looking videos. Thank you!! 😊
Aww yay! Thanks! So glad you’re here!
I add a lot of vine love them
Awesome :)
This is a wonderful and useful tutorial. Thank you.
You’re very welcome!! Appreciate you watching!!
You are a great teacher!!!
Wow, thank you!
Sennelier Green Gold 💚
Oh I’ve never tried this one!
Sweet potato vines also come in dark purple varieties. I bet that would be super pretty!
Oh yes!
You Bet! This lesson adds so much depth and excitement to the vines i always put in my paintings and drawings on cards. Thank you once again your lessons are invaluable to me, you are a great teacher ! I treasure your channel,Thanks Again!
I’m so grateful for your kind words :)
I'm still watching but I can't wait to comment. I had watched you a bit over time but you have come up more and more in my searches for specific info. That means you have lots of content to offer. Like this video, you really know what you are doing. Your style, technique, and last but definitely not least, your energy make each video worth every minute. Going to the comments is worth the time as is visiting the Amazon shop. One thing I really love that you use is the paint tins and blocks. Please share with me where you get them. I found the little one you are using today, but I'm not sure how it differs from one of the episodes I watched last night when you emptied one tray and set up a new one. As a reminder, it was the one you asked for advice on what to do with all the leftover chips. The way you popped out the boxes or paint made me even more curious. You pushed them out from behind through what looked like a metal ???
Ah I’m so glad you’re here :) Thanks for the sweet comments :)
Many of my palettes are made from tubes of paint squeezed into half pans left to cure :) this video features a pre made half pan palette of my own design available on Amazon. The video you mentioned is where I was removing old paints from a vintage tin and adding a collection of half pans to the vintage tin :)
Love this, Kristy! I can do this!
Yes you can!
Kristy. First, I am super impressed with the new graphics and your text. I learn by reading so this is great. I make noters before we start the painting portion. Visually it is engaging and helpful for what is coming up. I love all these leaf videos. No, I don't use vines. And I am just learning the liner brush. BUT! OMG. I love making swirls and flips. Please keep it all coming!
Oh I’m so excited you noticed!! Experimenting with some things :)
My gencraft paints have a lot of greens all that I like will reply and paint along thanks for this lesson and I love doing “ homework”
Awesome :)
Having lots of trouble with these. Following right along with you
Email me some photos, I can help :) hello@kristyrice.com. Put in the subject line: trouble with leaves
Ooooh and the greens!
Holbein green grey and olive green…Daniel Smith undersea green and sap green. And if I want to make it a little more sage-y, I’ll add the tiniest bit of Dioxazine purple (or if it’s my travel tin, I use a tiny bit rose of ultramarine instead because I don’t have Dioxazine purple in that one 😝🤦🏼♀️).
Holbein’s green gray is everything!!!
My absolute favorite green is from Daniel Smith Cascade Green because it changes colors all my itself ♥️♥️♥️
Oh friend that is one of my faves too! Might just be my # 1
So inspiring! I rarely add vines to a piece because I just don't think about it! Maybe I'll remember to try this more often now. I gotta tell ya, my favorite green is Daniel Smith's green gold. Don't often use it alone but what a bit of life it lends to anything green! Love it!
It’s a lovely green yes!
I haven’t, but I am going to try now. Thank you 🎨🖌
Glad to hear it!
I love this!!! Thank you 💖
You’re welcome!!
Thank you! I needed some inspiration. 🌱🌿💚 My fave greens are the DS Cascade Green; Kelp Green from Art Philosophy; from the Schminke dot card the Chromium oxide green brill and the Phthalo green. My fave artisan green is from Ruby Mountain Co. the Spring green with the yellow undertone and awesome granulation.
Need to try that Ruby Mtn. one!
@@KristyRice it’s gorgeous!
Can't wait to try these for sure. Honeysuckle are so pretty. Thanks again Kristy, as always you are amazing!!
Aww thanks! I just loved painting this simple Honeysuckle!
Really needed this! Whoo hooo!
Yay!
Can’t wait to do budding vine
Since watching a UA-cam content creator introduced Daniel Smith’s green gold and since then it’s been my absolute favorite! It’s washes are so enchanting! I do love all of the greens though. Green is my favorite color lol and so it’s pretty hard to pick. But if I were to pick it would be DS green gold.
Oooh yes DS’s green gold is so inspiring to use!
Loved it, beautiful!❤
Wahoo thank you!!
Pretty!
Thanks!!!
You bet!
👍🏻👍🏻💃🏻🎉
Love these!!!!
Thank you!
Pistachio !!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This video was so helpful. New subbie and glad I found you. My fav green to use is sap green because it blends so well with other colors.
Welcome!
I everything you do!
Awww thanks!
Loving this! I never thought about using vines, ok maybe I have, but wasn't sure how to approach it.
Hope it’s helpful!!
I love your videos just started watercolor painting 2 days ago and purchased non expensive supplies on Amazon but I can't find the lovely little palette you are using .... Thank you so much for all the information I only watch your videos because I love you style and teaching method Thank you again if you can help me find this palette
That is my palette, unfortunately it is sold out. Otherwise, welcome, and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! :)
@@KristyRice I purchased your brush set Love each and every brush
Great video it really help my compositions. My florals always seem to be missing something and this has been the answer :)
I love my windsor and newton paints, the pigments and choice of colors and all the things, however I really struggle with the greens! I have 7 different greens in my pallate and apart from one they are all so psychedelic. There are no greens like this in my garden though I do live in the UK. Which color do you lovely people think is the best to mix with mental greens to mute them quite a lot. I always gravitate towards an olive green which is getting a bit boring now :)
My favs are M. Graham Sap green, and Schmincke Pyrelene green. I'm not sure Schmincke makes it anymore but Daniel Smith has one. Both of those will add life to the less realistic greens, plus you can try adding a bit of a pinkish red, like D.S. Mayan red to tone them down too. The Mayan red is not a favorite on it's own but I do like it mixed in with other colors.
Can you use a flat angle brush cause I dont have a dagger.
Absolutely!
Question: In the watercolors you use in the Book: ART FOR JOY'S SAKE, you suggest Winsor/Newton Cobalt Turquoise. I couldn't locate that. Was it a mistake?
Nope! Check this like, sort by “all 110 options” and you’ll find Cobalt Turquoise :)
Another fun video in the books!
I'm having some trouble with the vines. Could you post a photo on IG? I think if I had a photo to look at maybe I can eventually get it.
I’ve posted them! Looked under my UA-cam archived stories :)
My problem is that I can COPY art easily, but I hardly ever seem to be able to come up with an original project. I was a math person in school, so maybe I’m using the wrong side of my brain. I’ve only been arting/water coloring for ten months, so maybe I’m expecting too much for myself?!
Where can we get your Art for Joy's Sake Watercolor Palette? Not avail on Amazon. Should I look elsewhere?
Right now you can find it on kristyrice.com
@@KristyRice Bought it! Thanks!
I just can't get that flick at the end of the leaf, ends up a mess. I've watched press left release so many times, and I actually say these words as I paint..
Try releasing more gradually, super slow… :)
I TRY TO USE VINES BUT NOT NEARLY AS SUCCESSFUL AS I WANT TO BE
You will get there!
Is your pallet not available? Where can i find it?
Currently sold out but coming back soon!
@@KristyRice oooh, Congratulations! Happen to know when it may restock?
I need to stop watching and start doing 🙄
You've got this!!!!
I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found your channel and your style of painting. It has been so freeing to start to learn your style of painting. I also purchased your brushes and am in love with them!
Wonderful! Thank you so much :)
Same here! You took so much pressure off me and my super cheap paints and paper and perfectionist personality.
