So, if you heavily rely on plugins and extensions you may need to wait a bit longer (or ping the plugin developers to check if they're going to build for M1). Hey I’m trying to download OBS on my Mac but it says my macOS cannot carry this version of OBS. (I use macOS high sierra and it’s updated till date) what version of OBS do you think I will be able to run?
You literally saved me from returning my new M1 Air because it was throttling like crazy in OBS even on 720p 30fps, reaching temperatures of 95-100C. I was sure that I made a huge mistake by buying my Air as a streaming device. Now with advanced settings set it easily streams 1080p 60p and reaches around 70 degrees Celsius. What a truly beautiful device this is, I'm so happy!! Thank you so much again!!!!
And, you gotta remember that OBS is not yet M1 optimized but that is in development and should increase performance by some magnitudes once it is ready.
@@kabassa It's an option, it works great, but one has to be willing to pay a subscription and that's a big downside in my opinion if you do not live stream for business purposes or to a small audience.

The main difference between the M1 Air and M1 Pro is that the one has fans and the other does not. For sustained performance it would be better to have the M1 MacBook Pro but my partner still uses the M1 Air very successfully.

I gave my PC away recently and decided to test my M2 MacBook Air out with streaming. The camera on the MacBook is better than my StreamCam Plus that I was using and the MacBook open air microphone is decent as well. So I can basically stream without using as much equipment that I was using. I’m impressed because I didn’t buy this thing for streaming. I’ve done two test streams so far. I would definitely recommend streaming with less things plugged in if you can. You can mirror your game play wirelessly that helps ALOT with keeping your MacBook cooler. I'll try to cover this better next time. One note about the Hardware Encoder though: when live streaming to UA-cam it seems to bring up some issues at the moment. Not sure why exactly, but I had to use the Software Encoder a couple of times for that (still worked great though, the M1 macs are powerful machines).

This is not enough information to fully understand the context. If you have a M1 MacBook Air, then try to select the hardware encoder settings and do not record in 4k to lift the load on your MacBook.
Hi Chris! Thanks for this video. Which laptop should I choose for a live streaming, regular video editing (more personal, not very heavy footage - A7III/A7IV), photo editing (Capture One/Photoshop) and work as a web designer? I'm thinking about Macbook Air M1 16gb vs Macbook Pro M1 Pro 10c/14c (or 16c gpu) and 16/32gb ram vs M1 Max 10c/32c 32 gb ram. My heart go for M1 Max, but I'm not 100% sure, if this will be great choice in a long time for my needs. What's your opinion?
I think any of these machines would be a great choice. Personally, I ordered the top of the line 16" M1 Max with 64GB RAM and 1TB of Storage. Based on the reviews I am seeing though, the other machines (M1 Pro and M1 Max base model) also perform incredible and would probably be plenty for most people.
I don't know as I do not have that version of the MacBook Air. However, the CPU is plenty powerful still and I would assume it will get the job done - unless you are trying to do video editing at the same time 🙈. Also: OBS is not yet fully M1 / Apple Silicon optimized, so once that comes I am guessing that it's going to be no problem at all.
so i'm currently using 2 Obsbot cameras at 720p and 1 additional webcam and it handles all these plus a rodecaster pro just fine....only using 6.3% of my processor. using Hardware H264 under advanced output settings. hope it helps.
We are still using the M1 16GB MacBook Air almost every day for live streams and recording. Sure, we don't have tones of scenes, effects, etc. But it does work. One thing that is super important is to use the Apple VT Hardware Encoder for either H.264 or H.265 (instead of FFmpeg). That makes a big difference!
I don’t have much experience with “actual webcam” type cameras. Personally, I always prefer using something like a APS-C or full frame camera for maximum quality. One extremely cool “webcam” I am currently reviewing is the OBSBOT Tail Air - though that is a bit pricy and has much more features than you are asking about.
Hi Chris, i would like to ask if the OBS would natively be able to be installed in a M1 Mac or do we need any other plugins for OBS to run in the M1 Macs
If I don't say it in the video then I can't tell you cause I can't remember 🙈. Sorry, next time I'll try to include this info in the description or video.
Pretty much, I also recently heard from someone that this is not available in the Streamlabs version of OBS and also not in older versions of OBS. So upgrade to the latest version and use the original OBS Studio from their website.
Hi, a friend is selling it and I was wondering, I plan on buying a laptop for streaming PS5 and Xbox Series games on Twitch and to work as an accountant at home, would this be a good PC for it ?
Hi, when adding the capture devide camera, do you select "use buffering" ? my image would lag at all times in OBS, even without streaming or recording but when i select "use buffering" it seems to run smooth, no more lagging.
Hey, I have a m1 MacBook Air 15G/1tb and Im having dropped frames. I have a 10Mb upload speed. I want to get 60 fps at 720 or 1080 with 30. Im confused which encoder to use because Im getting mixed info about x264 is only good for machines that doesn't have a dedicated GPU card and the Apple Hardware Encoder is better for recording rather than streaming because that encoder has a variable bit rate-which isn't good for streaming. Can you show me your settings and what your upload speed is?
i want to live stream 1080p from ps4 with macbook air m1 8gb with elgato capture card. This model does not have a fan, do you think I can broadcast live in stable quality?
I have seen these as well, but it never stopped me from live streaming anyways. It's sometimes a bit strange that the limiter not works. But also, please check your numbers, I think you want to set it to 5.000 instead of 50.000 anyways.
HI, NVENC is not something I have seen available on Apple Silicone or any MacBook for that matter? Now, since making this video, I have had some instances where UA-cam did not appreciate the signal from the Apple VT Hardware Encoder (it showed "signal receiving" but showed a black video screen despite sending a webcam signal). When switching to the x264 encoder those problems went away and UA-cam showed the signal. When you are working with 1920x1080p at up to 60fps I think you'd still be ok with using the x264 encoder. This may be different when streaming on Twitch though. Note: when recording it's a different story, there you can easily use the Apple VT Hardware Encoder. However, I have heard more and more people say that the Hardware encoder has a lesser quality than the x264 encoder. This is something I am planning to test in the future.
This heavily depends on your setup and would need much more detail. I am not currently able to provide this type of help in the comment section. Some thoughts: try lowering the resolution and FPS.
with a MacBook Pro m1 with a secondary screen and a webcam with option would be better? Hello. I've tried your exact OBS streaming settings for OBS to UA-cam. The Apple hardware encoder always encodes at a very high bitrate (around 22000) even when the limits are set exactly as you have. Can you please verify that yours are really limiting the bitrate? Your setup simply does not work as described in the video.
Hi, sorry to hear that. At the time it did work as described. The Hardware Encoder is never "perfect" with the limit, but it did work. However, since then something must have changed either in macOS or OBS and the Hardware Encoder now behaves differently. Additionally, UA-cam (for some strange reason) now does no longer like it when you stream with the Hardware Encoder and only shows a black frame (despite showing that it's receiving a signal). So, apparently, for now, the Software Encoder is your only option. But, to be honest, it isn't that bad with the M1 MacBook Air (as long as you're not trying to stream gameplay or something intensive like that).
Hi Chris, with the new Macbook Pro M1 Max chips, should I go for the 24 GPU cores or the 32 GPU cores for streaming purposes? Is it worth the $200 upgrade? What do you think?
I don't know because I do not have the M1 Max in the studio yet. For myself, I ordered the M1Max with the max number of cores and max of Unified Memory (64GB). Once there are more reviews out we will know more but since you are talking about live streaming which is video processing… it could help having the extra cores available. Again: this is guessing… I don't even know yet if OBS is going to work well with these GPU cores from the start or if they will have to do some work to integrate with the METAL Engin parts somehow differently to actually utilize the GPU cores on the M1Max. We'll see.
At the moment OBS on the M1 is a bit more limited for some reason. I will have to revisit this topic and also compare the new M1Max and M1 MacBook Air. Those tests are going to happen in the next few weeks.
What about using CamLink4K to bring a 4K 25fps source -> making crops -> outputting (streaming and recording at the same time) @ 1080p 25fps? do you think this could result in a stable stream? Thx
@@ChrisSpiegl I'm a filmmakoer/videomaker and I have a Windows desktop, but I will need a laptop for a) editing on the go b) streaming from my A7c. M1 (not Pro, not Max) seems to be a great value and within my budget, so I'm wondering if it is doable. Thx
@@SamoScopom Nicole, my partner, is doing exactly that. She's doing 4k multi cam video editing (up to 2 perspectives tested), exporting 30 - 60 minute long videos, and doing live sessions with the CamLink (in 1080p though). But generally it just works out so good. If you can, I would go for the MacBook Pro 13" (cause you get the fans and those can be helpful for sustained performance). And with that: definitely look at the refurbished store. Those are cheaper but just as good.
Here's a situation : 4 channel Mic Music Recording by Logic Pro X + 1 Video Capture from HDMI captureboard + with OBS Broadcasting Has anybody tried similar situation? Will the M1 MBA 8G RAM do the job?
Hi, I have not tried this specific setup but I would assume you'd be able to get it to work. Additionally, OBS is currently testing and working on a M1 native Apple Silicon Build which will bring additional performance improvements. I would choose 1080p for the HDMI capture just to be sure (or test 4k if you desire to have this level of video quality, but make sure you test it first to see if the computer can handle the audio and video rec at the same time).
@@ChrisSpiegl Thank you for your answer Chris! After my experiment I'll let you know my settings and test specifics for further discussions and inputs. Thanks!
so here is my current setup "mind you I have ran this under 1080p yet I don't use it as my Church's wifi is not the greatest". 2 Obsbot camera 720p, 1 J5 webcam also 720p, rode Caster Pro, 1 hdmi video card from iphone using FilmPro App into laptop, and also a Church Hymn App as well as audio and video on different scenes all in OBS. All seems to be working just fine, only thing is my audio, it seems to start slow at first when switching scenes, but this might have been due to the high Bitrate of 9000 i had originally assigned it at first, learning about keeping those bitrates when streaming 30% than your max upload speed should solve that issue. will keep you posted. Update: 01/18/22 9:11PM I lowered my bit rate down from 9000 to 5000 and not only a my getting better / clearer video but the audio is working much better. Also I’ve switch from using the Hardware H264 encoder to the software H264 option. Turns out if you are using less than 10,000 bit rate then there is no reason to use the hardware option. So far I’m extremely happy.
@@safetyhomeloans950 Thank you for this report of your experience with OBS. Since you are writing under this video I am assuming, you are using an M1 Mac? These are great results. The easiest way I know is to use Loopback by Rogue Amoeba ( crsp.li/Loopback ) but that's pretty expensive. Programs which do something similar are VB-Cable (not sure if they have a macOS version) and Blackhole ( crsp.li/BlackHoleAudioDriver ).
Sharing the screen is one of the more tricky ones - historically speaking. But for now it works. And one thing to note: OBS is not yet fully optimized for M1 but from what I hear this is being worked on. I will test the "unofficial M1" build soon, and maybe I will make a video about it.
I keep getting a green tint flashing on the screen that fades in and out when I'm using OBS.. Do you know what my issue might be? I'm trying to capture footage of my PS5.
You can absolutely stream with the M1 MacBook Air. It all depends on the settings you want to use and the content you want to stream. I'd start with the x265 Software Encoder (higher quality output but also uses more CPU) and at 1080p Full-HD with 30fps. If you notice that you need more CPU for the content you want to still do while streaming, maybe it's best to go down to 720p at 30fps.

So, Can you recomended M1 VT Hardware Encoder? Is it stable? Which one NVENC vs Apple VT H264 Hardware Encoder? only 1920*1080 60p streaming

So, apparently, for now, the Software Encoder is your only option. But, to be honest, it isn't that bad with the M1 MacBook Air (as long as you're not trying to stream gameplay or something intensive like that).
Thanks :)
We'll see.
Great video! You just helped my soul lol. Thank you!
Thanks, I appreciate that.
I dont have the hardware encoder
Have you switched to the "Advanced Stream Settings"? Which version of OBS are you using, and what laptop / computer?
Can you do the same but stream in 4K without lag ou jitter ?
At the moment OBS on the M1 is a bit more limited for some reason. I will have to revisit this topic and also compare the new M1Max and M1 MacBook Air. Those tests are going to happen in the next few weeks.
👍👍👍
What about using CamLink4K to bring a 4K 25fps source -> making crops -> outputting (streaming and recording at the same time) @ 1080p 25fps? do you think this could result in a stable stream? Thx
Could work, maybe I will do more testing sometime soon (while comparing the performance to the M1Max).
Thank you for the tests!
You're welcome 🌸.
Can I run 1080p with 30 fps for live stream on MacBook Air M1 (8 256) ?
@@ChrisSpiegl Thank you
I was about to say, isn't that what I covered 🙈. Seems you found it out already as well 👍.
Here's a situation : 4 channel Mic Music Recording by Logic Pro X + 1 Video Capture from HDMI captureboard + with OBS Broadcasting
Has anybody tried similar situation?
Update: 01/18/22 9:11PM
I lowered my bit rate down from 9000 to 5000 and not only a my getting better / clearer video but the audio is working much better. Also I’ve switch from using the Hardware H264 encoder to the software H264 option. Turns out if you are using less than 10,000 bit rate then there is no reason to use the hardware option. So far I’m extremely happy.
@@safetyhomeloans950 Great to know! Thanks! So you solved audio delay issue by setting your bitrate like 6000 - 7000?
@@safetyhomeloans950 Thank you for this report of your experience with OBS. Since you are writing under this video I am assuming, you are using an M1 Mac?
These are great results. And I am pretty sure that with the new version of OBS, which includes dedicated M1 Apple Silicone Support, this will only get better.
Thanks, do you know how to get internal (desktop) audio in OBS
The easiest way I know is to use Loopback by Rogue Amoeba ( crsp.li/Loopback ) but that's pretty expensive. Programs which do something similar are VB-Cable (not sure if they have a macOS version) and Blackhole ( crsp.li/BlackHoleAudioDriver ).
hi im considering buying this for streaming. Will it handle green screen, images, a video background plus alerts while sharing the screen for example?
Sharing the screen is one of the more tricky ones - historically speaking. But for now it works. And one thing to note: OBS is not yet fully optimized for M1 but from what I hear this is being worked on.
I will test the "unofficial M1" build soon, and maybe I will make a video about it.
I keep getting a green tint flashing on the screen that fades in and out when I'm using OBS.. Do you know what my issue might be? I'm trying to capture footage of my PS5.
I have never seen that and don't know what it may be. Sorry. Maybe try the OBS Forum and see what they say about it?
can i stream using macbook air m1 with 8gb ram using this method?
You can absolutely stream with the M1 MacBook Air. It all depends on the settings you want to use and the content you want to stream.
I'd start with the x265 Software Encoder (higher quality output but also uses more CPU) and at 1080p Full-HD with 30fps. If you notice that you need more CPU for the content you want to still do while streaming, maybe it's best to go down to 720p at 30fps.
