I still use a base model M1 MacBook Air for work, and it’s held up incredibly well. Runs everything I need. Multiple IDE, browsers, webservers etc. I thought the ram would be too small since I use 16gb on Windows, but it kept its responsiveness even when swap is used (which, like 90% of the time). It does slow down when both ram and swap is full, but it’s rare. Color me impressed.
Mine seems to be running better than when I bought it. Today I had multiple safari windows open, Davinci Resolve video editing, photoshop, and Lightroom, and it kept up. I was like shoot, I need to close some of these out!
This was what I was looking for, currently I work with several Chrome tabs, "Web Storm" open, frontend and backend running locally; on my Linux it reached 90% of the 16GB. I really want to know what the consumption would be like on the m1 air base model. I could handle it for at least a year and a half there.
I actually returned (traded-in) M1 Mac Mini back to Apple, they actually gave me more than quoted amount. I had already purchased an M1 Macbook Air on sale at Best Buy for $740 right before trade-in. Health reasons didn't permit me to sit upright at a desk for long periods, so it made sense to purchase a device that is more mobile. Plus, I'm in a phase of traveling to various cities seeking housing, and lugging a monitor and peripherals is taxing. The Air is the perfect device for the writing and basic computing I'm doing. Great confirmation of my decision.
I bought a secondhand from eBay, got a 512GB with 16GB of RAM for about just about $800 which I originally only intend to bring with me for when I'm going out of the country, but man this laptop is so thin and light, unless I'm running some of the memory or cpu intensive programs. I actually find that I use the M1 Air more often than my 16-inch M1 Max.
Yep - big fan of base models. I ordered a 128GB iPad Pro, which has been great. Wanted an apple watch - got the SE. Now need a desktop computer - just ordered the base model M2 Mac Mini. The M1 Air is amazing and a lot of computer for most people. Great video!!
Thanks a lot. I’m still using the M1 and barely surviving with my 256 ssd. Haha but still love it. Yeah base models are where it’s at. Better resell value and great performance.
I would say it's fairly true. I have both 14" M1 Pro and M1 Air and I love using the Air more. The only thing I don't like using the air as much is gaming but it's only after like....2-3 dota 2 games it starts getting really hot. So best recommendation is to lower the setting to mid to high mid and not the highest settings. Also the battery life of the M1 Air is amazing. I got mine on OWC with 16gb and 512storage. This thing feels JUST as fast as my M1 Pro and it has no fans. My friend has an alienware and just opening a few tabs on chrome, you can hear the fans go crazy + it starting to heat up a bit. I just look forward to the M3 Air, but I probably won't update it unless this Air has like...12 core CPU and 16 core GPU or something like that..but then again, I'll probably keep my Air until like..M5? M6? or another 6 more years. It's that good.
I have an M1 Air for personal use and another that was provided by my employer. They're amazing! I'm a sales manager and mainly use Excel, Word, Outlook, Task managers, Note apps and other office apps. The computers are insanely fast and have incredible batter life. Most reviewers mention video and photo editing. For those that do that, a pro makes sense. For the rest of us, most people, we don't really need all that power. And when needed I can still edit videos and photos.....I just have to wait a few extra minutes to export! lol Easy.
"That was a very informative video! Thank you for sharing such valuable insights. I'm a wedding photographer who edits large batches of photos (typically around 1200+ RAW files at once) and I'm interested in a portable laptop for editing on the go. I'm trying to decide between two laptops: Apple MacBook Air M1 with a 13.3-inch Retina display, 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage. ASUS Vivobook 16X 2023 featuring a 16-inch FHD+ 120Hz display, 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13500H processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and an NVIDIA RTX 3050 graphics card. Considering my workflow of editing large RAW files, which laptop would offer superior performance for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop?".. thank you
I just bought a used 1tb 16gb m1 macbook air instead of a new macbook pro for 2k less. Perfectly capable for all my work flow and I run a full agency style business. Its the secret pro laptop if you understand the tech.
I have a 16" Macbook Pro from 2019 with an Intel chip, has 32GB of RAM and it is struggling to open Final Cut Pro and edit simple 4K videos now. Decided to order an M1 MBA with 16GB of RAM after hearing it's better than the M2 MBA. Am I crazy? We'll see 🙃
I totally agree with you. I l; love my M1 MacBook Air. It works perfectly for me and for the simple tasks that I have to do. I may purchase the new base M3 MacBook Air for better viewing and hearing videos and movies.
It’s a fantastic machine. I got the base m1 MacBook air 100% thinking of it as my iPad Pro but with a keyboard and I didn’t have to hold it. It’s ended up being so much more than that. I realized my iPad was a giant iPhone. The MacBook is a whole other world.. really a PC replacement for me entirely. Plays nice with my iPhone too and I got AirPods Pro 2 and with latest software updates, they are incredible. My home entertainment setup of a m1 MacBook Air and AirPods Pro 2 cost me about $1,300 This quality for that price.. lol, and people say apple is soooo expensive. If I break down yearly cost it’s more like $200/year. They rock.
Yeah it’s really a great deal for what you get. I’m looking at the M3 and it’s tempting for video editing, but it’s more of a luxury item. I can still do everything on the m1 MacBook Air. Thanks for commenting.
Sir, I am confused between the Macbook M1 base variant and the Asus Zenbook 14 2023 Ryzen 7 7730 U 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD. In India, they both cost the same. Kindly guide me.
macbooks are more productivity friendly and u get macOS while windows are gaming and user friendly normal usage focused. You get more on Asus than macbooks. so it depends what you want to do
I have been using an M1 MacBook Air since release. It is fantastic, and still really snappy. I use it for everything.
I know! I was surprised how well it does after using the M1 MacBook Pro for a year.
8gb and 265 storage?
@@vincidelfin yup.
Just got it for programming,
Absolutely amazing machine ❤
It really is!

Macbook air m1 are reaching pretty good prices to me, here in Brazil
Pay attention to SSD: the swap wear the ssd very fast. you run the risk to damage the ssd in a very short period of time
Stop spreading misinformation. No one experienced this so far... I ve been using mine over the past two years, no issues@@massimo79mmm

I'm using it right now to reply to you. Yep, it's the perfect size and it doesn't slow me down from making these videos.
Thank you for this video. It makes tons of sense. I’ve been teetering between M1 and M2 and you have convinced me to get the M1. Thank you again!
Glad it was helpful!

Yeah I love the small size and weight. That alone makes me use it more.

I total agree. I heard the M3 may get more ram. If that’s the case I may get the base model. But honestly the M1 air can handle most tasks.
@@Davidmccombsunfortunately the M3 is still 8gb as base
i am running 40 50 channels in logic pro audio and midi with to many plugins with m1 16gb rum and i have not any problem every thin runs perfect
Wow. That’s pretty cool. My brother in law has a similar setup. He’s a music composer and does everything from a m1 Mac mini
can i edit youtube thumbnails with macbook m1 air 8/256?

Yep. I’m still using mine for photo editing and making these UA-cam videos. It’s crazy what it can still handle.
How much ram?
base m1 at 800€ vs base m2 at 1200€? i'd say m1 what you suggest? My use is same as yours
I upgraded from the M2 Air to the M3 Pro and man do I miss my Air!!!! Especially for in bed use
Haha. That’s what happened to me. You could get the studio and use the air for portable use.
@@Davidmccombs yea I think that’s the next move ! For sure haha
The Apple Silicone base models should come with a minimum of 512gb/16gb. I still enjoy using my M1 MacBook Air.
Exactly!

That’s awesome. Yeah and you’re paying more than half the price as the newer M3 Macs.
The best beater laptop even in 2024.
Yep. I’m still using it

I think that’s a good choice. You won’t get better export speeds on the M2 air on Final Cut unless your exporting to Pro Res.
I totally agree with you. I l; love my M1 MacBook Air. It works perfectly for me and for the simple tasks that I have to do. I may purchase the new base M3 MacBook Air for better viewing and hearing videos and movies.
Yeah I'm still on the fence. I'd like to upgrade but I haven't found one that offers a better value. Holding out for the M3 MacBook Air
Is that an enema at 0:55?
I just asked the same question lmao
It’s a Giottos Rocket air blower
Thank you for clarifying

is 700 usd worth in 2024 for a brand new base model?
I would think $600
If the M1 is 700 and M2 is 850 is the M2 better at this price ?
It’s better you’ll just have an ssd thats half the speed
Where did you find an M1 air for $500?!
I got it with the gift cards they sell for 10% off in November and then I bought it with the education discount that happens in June.
So even the MacBook pro 14 m2 has a slower hard drive than the m1 air?
Actually it’s pretty similar.
LMAO is that an enema in the background?
😂 it’s a Giottos Rocket air blower
@@leowchyan a new toy to blow some air into my ass lol

is the base M1 air good for visual studio code and editing videos in tiktok format?
Note sure about visual studio code. Video editing is fine though

should I update my MacBook Air m1 to os14 ?
I'm still on 13. I might wait another month or two.
This is a dope video
Thank you
Had to get the pro cuz of multiple monitors and the better headphone jack otherwise i would have saved 1000 bucks....
Totally understand. Sometimes I miss it, but the M1 is still solid for my basic needs. It forces me to be minimal..haha
M a n y of the Mac Air M1 are still available, especially now everyone
wants to buy a new one.
So this video is an excellent sales Promo 😂🤪
Glad it was helpful!
And Apple put M2 on pause.
Even with the M3, the M1 is the still the best deal.
