Installing a new Hydraulic cab tilt pump

  • After a bit of digging around on the inter tubes, I found the Power Packer commercial cab tilt hand pumps for fire and rescue looked oddly similar to the manual pump that is hanging off the side of the M1079.
    So I reached out to Power Packer and had a really nice email exchange with Fred, a quality engineer over at Power Packer. I was basically trying to see if one of their pumps would work on our trucks and after the debacle I had with Goodyear over just getting a price on tires, I figured this was going to be another Sisyphean effort to order an OEM part. I sent him some photos and not only did he have a matching pump he sent me the drawings for the original so I could match up the measurements myself to the one I have on the LMTV.
    So turns out Enerpac the parent company of Power-Packer made the original hand pumps and cab latches under the Acuant brand. I didn’t know that when I started looking, so that’s a good little bit of info to have.
    The only thing he didn’t know was where I could buy one. But he told me to call the front desk number and they would know. So I gave the number a call and they gave me the contact information for a couple of companies in the US that I could buy from.

    Be aware there is a 2 to 3 week lead time on orders. Mine showed up in 2 weeks.
    The pump that I went with was the Non-Air assisted hand pump with the build in raise/lower valve. (HP50034204) If you want the air assisted version the part number is (HP50034204) I did not go with the air assisted unit due to the fact that the power unit hangs off of the front of the pump and will stick out quite a bit, if mounted in the factory location Stewart and Stevenson put the original pump. That and I don’t envision raising the cab all that often to necessitate having air assist. Plus it’s just one more thing to break.
    The hydraulic fluid I use is Shell’s AeroShell 41 MIL-PERF5606-H which is what the manufacture recommends and by recommends I mean it will void the warrantee if you use anything else. It is a mineral spirits based hydraulic fluid that will not absorb moisture and doesn’t gel at cold temperatures.

    Did you fill the reservoir while the cab was up? Just trying to understand why it overflowed.

    I'm late to this party.... Just removed all the Air over Hydraulic on my m1078... I purchased a pump from one of the online military suppliers. My pump is connected identical to yours. Hand pump to the cylinder, no tank, none of the manifolds, etc.
    When I lower the cab, the pressure is causing the seals to blow out in the back of the pump and spit expensive aero41 out the back seal.
    The supplier is saying that the pump seals are failing because i don't have the expansion tank and wasn't designed for this..🤔 My suspicion is that the pump they sell that looks a lot like the power packer, is not an actual power packer pump. Was curious if you have the same issue with your OEM version?
    In your setup, withe the OEM Power Packer.. are you seeing any issues when the cab 'falls' down? Where hyrdo fluid spits out the back of the pump?

      No issues so far and I’ve run it up and down countless times. Who did you get the pump through? The one that is on the truck by default doesn’t have a reservoir the one I bought from power packer does.

    Was your stock pump worn out? Trying to figure out if this was an upgrade or more of a replacement project.

      the stock pump was still working fine. however after 20 years all the rubber o'rings in the system are due for a swap out. so this was mostly a replacement rather than a rebuild.

    I have a question for you my friend. I am making a trailer out of PARTrisSha, as you may know, and I want to use the LMTV hand pump to raise and lower the hydraulic driven kneeling rams that I am now using to power the trailer tongue jack stand. Seeing that yours puked all that oil out, it got me wondering if I will even need a reservoir like I was planning. The kneeling units can pull and push... and I realized that when it is pushing, oil is flowing out the backside of the "push," and vice versa when pulling. What do you think?

      I think you are going to need a reservoir. The reason I changed to the pump I did, is that the original pump does not have a reversible valve on it.(that as you know is handled by the valve assembly) So the hand pump itself only pumps in one direction. So you would need an external valve to switch the flow or some massive springs to force the fluid back out of the cylinders.

      @@BrokeOverLand the reversible valve is certainly a must for my set up... I just keep going back and forth over the reservoir question, mainly because I want to avoid it. LOL! Thank you!

    Are you able to get to the right front spring pin grease fitting with a grease gun while that cab cylinder is installed?

      With the flex tip gun and the cab up I can get in there, yes.

    I just bought a 1078 with the same pump. Concerning the control of lever...12 o' clock is the cav lower and 6 o'clock is the cab raise ?. I see that once your cab was completely lowered, the control lever is in the 3 O'Clock position..is that correct ?.. I checked on PP website and their manuals do not explain the control lever nor fluid fill capacity ... thanks

      I honestly can not remember. I removed that manifold so long ago. I'll check it the next time I'm over at the shop.

    Hello! I'm a big fan of your videos, and I am just starting out doing many of the same things you are but to my M1081. I found that same pump from another supplier (it's possible they gave me a pump with a different pressure release setting), and I plumbed it with new 1/4 in hoses from Surplus Center (strongly recommend as a supplier for hydraulics). Problem is, it acts as though it has a huge flow restriction.... it takes an awful lot of pumping going up, and even down. The cab latch functioned fine before, but now the spring isn't strong enough to close the latch. Just throwing it out there to see if you might be kind enough to offer a thought or two on the matter.... Did you have to adjust a bleed off pressure valve? Did you also use 1/4in hoses?

      If you have the model number, you can check PowerPackers web site for the flow rate of the pump. If it is the HP50034204 (Model I used) then you may have some restriction elsewhere in the system. especially if your cab latch is not completely latching on it's own. if you give the pump a couple of pumps once the cab is all the way down, with the valve in the lower position, does the cab latch... latch? As for the lines, I can't remember off hand. anyway, I have the specifications sheet for the pump over on my blog page. brokeoverland.com/f/hydraulic-cab-tilt

      @@BrokeOverLand Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I've been following your blog write-ups too; nice work! I've confirmed it is the correct model number, I'm suspecting there might be a lot of air in the lines. Did you do anything specific to purge the system? Other than overfill it excessively of course...
      Oddly, when the cab is lowered giving it a few more pumps down doesn't seem to help the latch close at all. Over several hours though, the spring does eventually close the latch. I think my next step is to crack the line at the bottom of the cylinder, apply a few pumps to push air out, then close it off and try and cycle it again. If that doesn't do it I may have to pull the whole circuit and try purging the lines and rebuilding the cylinder looking for blockages...

      You may want to reach out to power packer and ask them about line size. I took my old lines to a local hydraulic shop to have replacements made, so I don’t know the exact internal dimensions. But I agree that a partial blockage sound likely. When I pulled my kneeling cylinders there was hard chunks in the fluid.

      @@BrokeOverLand Fred at Power Packer is a champion! He had me pull out the direction spindle valve and inspect a few things. A tiny tiny orifice in there was stuck full of something, not sure what - I think it might of been chips from when the parts were manufactured, or piece of o-ring that had been sheared off during assembly. Anyways, it works great now!

    Can you tell me where the latch is that locks the cab down? Cab wouldn't tilt as faulty pump which i replaced but now cab wants to lift but something not releasing so presume its the latch but can't find it.

      There is a pressure activated cab latch at the back center of the cab. It has to have enough pressure to open before the cab will lift.

      @@BrokeOverLand Thanks for your reply, how much pressure? I pumped until there was quite alot of pressure and I was really pushing down on bar. To me once I'd taken up pressure I was expecting to see it lift. Don't really want to be blowing seals in the pump. There isn't a lot of room between cab and body but I can see cross member is it in the centre of that?

      PIRTEK Hose & Fittings in Woodinville WA. Most any hydraulic company should be able to make you a set of lines. Just bring in an old set and they can match the fittings.

Looking at getting a FMTV (6x6) trying hard to convince myself it will be better than the LMTV, but who knows. I have no one to help , no lift, no shop or garage, so work will be a major challenge out in the hot sun all day. I do appreciate the time and effort it takes to post videos, and your info really helps a lot of people.

    Another question, I got new lid headlights whit out marked wires just numbers 16, 17, 18. Since you install the new one could you please give the idea which number represent a beam high or low.
