I am getting back into CPAP therapy after being diagnosed 15 years ago. My biggest problem has been masks. Trying to find the right one and dealing with the over-inflated price's has been a challenge. What makes it worse is that some places will not let you return them if they don't work. So now you are out that money. I checked out your sponsor and noticed they will let you return the items "IF" they are unopened. Very disappointing for those of us that struggle with finding the right masks.

I realize this is an old video, but I recently began CPAP and I was feeling like doo-doo every morning. Then I watched this video, realized that my mask was just too tight on my mush, made a slight adjustment to loosen it and I no longer wake up thinking I'm going to die. Thank you for the work you do! This one was a life-saver.

If the main danger of sleep apnea is low oxygen levels why not just wear an oxygen sensor that alerts you whenever your levels are low? All my cpap does is wake me up randomly throughout the night and destroy my rest....an o2 sensor would do the same and be far less annoying.

I've been on CPAP for just over 2 years and it's been a complete life changer for me. I started feeling better immediately. There have been small hiccups here and there but overall, I'm in much better shape *sleep wise* than I was for years before my SA diagnosis. I've tweaked my settings on my APAP machine to the point I think I've got the right settings for me. If you're having problems, don't give up! Keep tweaking the settings, try different masks until you find the right thing for you! It's worth it to yourself to get your sleep health in check. You'll feel so much better if you do!

And I said to them I am every week paying for this thing and eventually I'm going to own it and actually I will be an owner of it pretty soon. So how come it would be locked? I mean I just asked the lady this today I was at my appointment and she said so how is the machine been working for you so far? And I said I wouldn't know and you know that because I don't use it and she said yeah I see that. I felt like saying then why the hell did you just ask me that??? You know it's the same damn thing I tell you every single time I've come in here that machine doesn't work for me it just continuously blows and I feel like I'm going to suffocate when I put the fucking mask on my face and you guys just keep telling me to keep trying??? And I hear stories like you all yeah man I took to it right away etc etc it's so fucking depressing and every day I'm getting more and more horribly depressed and aggravated over nothing and cranky all the time for no reason and constantly fucking tired. And I just want to throw this fucking expensive piece of shit out the window. Another great video, LL! I've been on CPAP for two years. But I felt terrible - tired, confused, etc. "But your AHI is good," my neurologist told me. I tried different types of masks and nothing helped. My PCP recommended another MD who specializes in sleep medicine and she asked if I'd tried auto PAP ( I had been on a fixed pressure of 14). I hadn't. So she recalibrated my machine to APAP and voila - I started feeling better each day after. Then FoamGate happened and I had to switch machines - and another miracle happened - my AHI improved a lot after I got my new machine! So don't be satisfied when a medical professional tells you you're "fine" or "within acceptable range" when you feel terrible. Persevere and get some answers until you DO feel better!

Well, I finally got tired of having massive air leaks every single night. I had trouble sleeping through the night also. The noise I was making would wake up my wife almost every night so I had to get something done. I have been using the same mask for about 10 years (Mirage Activa LT) and yes, I was aware that my CPAP machine was reporting massive leaks, but I couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I finally bought some mouth tape and stared using that. It helped for awhile. I still was making noises at night and while still using the Mirage Activa LT mask, I was still getting mask leaks.
So, I finally decided to try a full face mask. I didn't like the idea of using one, but I thought I had to do something different. I bought an AirFit F20 and started using that. The first time I used this mask, I slept through the entire night and to my knowledge, didn't move a muscle! It was strange to go to sleep and then wake up and it's daylight! I checked my OSCAR readings and my mask leaks were just about gone. Then I found that there is an AirTouch F20 which has the softer foam cushions and that's what I'm using now. I have the medium mask and I think it's the right size.
Also, with some advice from Freecpapadvice.com, I change some settings on my BiPAP that hadn't been changed in 11 years! I lowered the pressure and now I sleep like a log all night through! It's just remarkable how much better I sleep with this full face mask. If you a reluctant to try one, I strongly suggest you give it a shot. I don't even use the mouth tape any more and I sleep as quietly as I have ever done and my wife is very appreciative of that fact. So, this thing with the CPAP is working for me and I'm 71 years old. Even an old guy can learn something new once in awhile! Good luck to everyone out there.

The motor was dying two weeks which was replaced with new Resmed 10 Autosense I called up the folks at our local hospital and was able to get a new doctor who was willing to write me a new prescription. Four days later it arrived. I was able to set it up myself and and I am doing great, better than the older Resmed.

I gave up on cpap several years ago. I opted for a mandibular jaw advancement device ($2000), plus positional sleep treatment (i.e. a belt to prevent supine sleeping). The device was super painful to my jaw. I worked through the pain, but eventually discovered that my oxygen level was still very low at night. ( I have a pulse oximeter that records data writeable to OSCAR. Two years ago I was tested again. I began using CPAP in earnest, following another scary health issue. Watching your videos, Jason, has helped a lot with finding good masks, managing jaw drop, mouth leaks etc. If I didn’t have to pee and disconnect at night, I wouldn’t even be aware that I’m using a machine. My sleep is lovely now. It’s been a long journey through non-compliance, plain defiance, and discomfort to get to this point, and if I can do it, anyone can. It’s important because we all need that good O2 to stay healthy.

Jason, I've been thinking about this a lot. There are any number of little tweaks I made based on your videos as well as Nick's, and all have made my CPAP experience better. But when I think about the one change that determined whether I was going to succeed or fail, it really boils down to one key moment, I think.
Some time ago, you said something that entirely changed my perspective, and I wish I could remember the exact wording, but it was something to the effect of, "Most people can become nose-breathers."
That seems like such a little thing, but I've been a life-long mouth breather, so the notion that I'd be able to get away with a nasal mask never would have occurred to me. And my first DME and sleep doctor both told me I'd never be able to use a nasal mask. But you forced me out of one mode of thinking into accepting other possibilities. And I honestly believe if I had kept on trucking trying to make a hybrid full-face mask work, I would have given up long before this point.

I've since recorded myself and I've been quiet as a church mouse. I've watched videos of sleep studies, and I knew I wouldn't get an accurate reading because of my sleep position. Thank you for establishing this UA-cam! I was a RPSGT for fifteen years and, like you, had some patients who felt the difference immediately and loved CPAP/BIPAP. I always wanted to have the patient's studies, whether the initial study then secondary or a split night study, and show them the difference in their sleep patterns side by side. Allow them the "tangible" effect of seeing is believing. As you have mentioned, it doesn't always work for some, however, it does work for many. I also tried to explain to patients that PAP is a treatment and not a cure, as well, taking ownership of their health and once better sleep is attained, the patients could change their lifestyle; i.e. eating better, exercising, and enjoying life because the person feels so much better about life and themselves.

A lot of angst could be relieved if the CPAP consultants were honest about what to expect. Here's the truth - you'll despise it at first, then hate it, then be annoyed by it, then irritated, gradually coming down to acceptance. That takes about a year. At least, that's what I experienced.

CPAP & mouth taping has my OSA **well** under control. Now, I need some way to remove my arms when I go to sleep. As a side sleeper, I wake up and roll over when either arm goes numb. If I sleep on my back, my back issues (classic L4/L5 spine disc compression) wake me up. flip. flop. flip. flop. all. night. long. Maybe I need to sleep in one of those sensory deprivation chambers where you float, near weightless.

I tried sleeping on a specialized beanbag called the Yogibo. OMG, you can sleep in ANY position and it supports you equally through the length of your body. It feels like you are sleeping on a cloud. It was life changing. It took me a couple weeks to figure it out, but once you dial it in, you will never sleep in more comfort again.

Now I'm back to tossing and turning but still getting much better sleep than before CPAP. My doctor says my data still looks good...that I have very little mask leak and very low incidents per night so it is still working...but I really wish I was sleeping like I did when I first started the therapy.

I didn’t have symptoms, just snoring. Wife made me get a sleep study. Had a score of 24. Tried the air pillow, it was awful my nose burned. I have a nose cover now, it’s better but honestly I hate it too. I’m exhausted all the time, it’s affecting my work, my time with the kids and has eliminated my sex drive. I hate the hose, I hate when I put it on like I’m on life support. I used to work out, now I’m too tired. I find myself needing to take naps during the work day. Everyone says keep doing it, but the only time I feel like I have enough sleep is the once a week where I take it off and get 4 hours. I appreciate that some had this positive life change but for me I’ve considered that divorce may be the only solution, because this thing is ruining my life. I completely understand why people give up. The last review said I had zero instances when using it, so I appear to be doing everything right but the numbers don’t reflect my reality. I’ve been using for over a month now but not sure how long I can keep this up. I took it off at 2 am last night and slept in the guest bedroom without it- that’s the best sleep I’ve had all month.

I did fine with CPAP for several years. Post cancer treatments I had a more problems sleeping through the night. Trying to minimize issues I decided to get a new mask because mine was breaking down. Which needed a new script. Which meant doing the whole process all over again. And I didn't end up with a mask that worked. The equipment company just wanted to randomly try masks, which meant weeks of not sleeping well trying to adjust to the latest mask. No true effort on their part. And I kept getting air in my stomach, or at least that's what it felt like, so it probably wasn't the right pressure. Considering that taking yet another stab at it would have meant going through the same medical practice and same equipment supplier, I just didn't bother. Wish I had your caliber of professional in my area.

I panic and feel like I have to take a deep breath, then I can't get it so I have to throw off the mask.
I realize it's a mental thing but I can't seem to shake it off.
This video inspired me to try it out again so I set it up in my bedroom for tonight.
I guess the biggest problem is that I struggle to fall asleep. I've got this thing where I fixate on my breath, humming sounds etc. I've worked as a musician/sound engineer my whole adult life so my mind is literally tuned to focus in on frequencies. It's a thing that haunts me in many ways.
If I start to think about how often I take a breath because of the sound of the machine I can't fall asleep.
    It's a problem even without a machine..

I have a VSA machine and I can't adjust anything on mine. I'm going on 3 months and I don't feel any better. I have tried 3 different masks and so far nothing. I'm getting desperate and was thinking about the Aspire product.

Tried CPAP for the first time last night and loathed it. Felt all kinds of funky after 2 hrs. Pretty sure I have a deviated septum & have had it for a long time. I'm thinking getting surgery could potentially help my issues. I know a lot of the things I experienced last night will probably go away given time, but regardless I don't think I'll ever like it. Probably going to be change careers, because the job requires it.

Five years of cpap and I do wake up a lot. But I feel better because the quality of my sleep is much better. I am on an adventure to find a new full face that works for me.

I've been using my CPAP for 10 months and it has been a struggle from the wrong masks ,I'm on my 7th mask. I also changed my CPAP pressure from 4 to 18 that was first prescribed. When I used OSCAR , realized I will be better on a pressure of 9 to 14...95% of the time the pressure is between 12 and 13.54 when I looked at OSCAR. I always wake up during the night from a lot of events and they diagnosed me of suffering form severe chronic insomnia but I know I keep getting awake by my mask leaks or the sounds of the air(those masks with the tube attachment on top of the head)..10 months of struggle but I never not even for one night stop using my CPAP...Every nights it's different from choking one night or having a good night or having no leaks or some or just not sleeping at all...

If that's the case, try a steady pressure of 12 for a few nights, then 13 for a few nights. If you need a RAMP to get to sleep, go for it, but keep it short, like 10 minutes at most. Make sure the leak trend is also very flat. Sounds like you on that though!!!
My hunch is that this is more of a pressure problem than a mask problem....though masks could certainly be part of the problem!!!
      Thanks for watching!

It took me about a year to get used to my CPAP machine but now I sleep a lot better with it. My CPAP machine is on the Philips recall list so I'm having to go without it unfortunately. I don't think I have the right mask though because I breathe though my mouth and I have a nasal mask. My doctor doesn't like full face masks so she won't change anything. She just raised the pressure from 8 to 10 which made it worse. My CPAP supplies company was going to see about trying a chin strap before the recall happened. What do you think of chin straps for this problem?

In New Zealand we have the kindest support available ....we can phone a sleep specialist anytime ,we get several appointments until our sleep is right , and then we are " parked " if we have a problem ,we can ask to go back ....we get free replacements of masks ,tubing and water containers..of if you exceed older ppl can use their pension card to get more....they have a club to join if you want to learn tips ...believe me ,I feel blessed .

Never give up never surrender! I have had almost 20 years crappy sleep with CPAP. Same without it so I use it because Dr says reduces chance of a stroke. 🤷‍♂️

I have used a CPAP for years. It's been a horrible. As soon as I lay down and put it on my sinuses and I breathe through my mouth all night I'm dizzy and off-balance all the time my ears feel like they're plugged. I burp up air you name it. Worst of all due to our wonderful hair healthcare system I cannot talk to a doctor to help me with this problem. It is affecting a quality of life beyond belief. if I don't wear it I feel even worse but the Cpap helps me maybe feel better 10% more than not using it . I have tried to get in to talk to an ENT which is just about impossible also to find out what's going on with my ears and my balance absolutely no luck. I give up

If you’re waking more using CPAP than not CPAP and the mask is fitting properly does that mean it’s likely the air pressure is too much? Or can low air pressure be worse than no pressure at all? (No CPAP)

With my bipap (with full mask) I sleep better, I don't fall asleep during the day, and I remember my dreams. I was waking about about 8 times each night before the bipap now I only wake up about once per night. However, I am more saddend knowing that I have to be attached to this thing for the rest of my life

I’ve been on a CPAP machine for over 20 years. The first 3-4 years were a struggle but after that I was getting really good sleep. I needed a new machine about 2 years ago and picked up a Dreamstation and aDreamwear gel nasal pillow. I just received my replacement Dreamstation 2 and I’m not sleeping as well…don’t know why…also they have discontinued the gel nasal pillow and the new version is terrible…I went out and bought a dozen gel pillows because the new nasal pillows are so bad….not very happy with Philips right now but from everything I’ve read the other manufacturers are just as bad!!! This is getting very frustrating.

For me, the face mask leak in my eyes and the nose mask (dreamwear nose mask) kinda irritate my nostrils and I feel like I only expire by one side it's weird. I thin I will try the bigger nose mask next.

How would you prevent the jaw dropping while using the full face mask?
