  • Come to Paris with me in 2024! www.parisienne... Our unfitted kitchen makeover has been a six-year process with great pauses due to time constraints, budget, and reality. This week, in preparation for our apparently NEVER arriving tile, we needed to tear out what was left of the kitchen cabinets. Thank goodness the Dry Farm came today! Get an extra bottle for a PENNY: www.dryfarmwin... These cabinets have to be gone for the new flooring anyway so with forward motion being my drug of choice, it was time for the cabinets to GO, but...our long-paused unfitted kitchen story recommences today with the destruction of the broken, chipped, sticky, stained kitchen cabinets and their very timely death. (Not to mention what lies beneath). I've told you for years that this kitchen photographs fabulously but in real life, it's a Kardashian without Photoshop. Yes, standing there in person is a whole 'nother story. I'm glad you're here for it!

The older I get the more I appreciate pull out drawers. Not trays that allow things to fall out or behind. But real drawers that hold things and I can see down into them and don't have to pull out so many other items first so I can get to the one thing I need. If I were going to renovate I would take out every lower cabinet and put in a real drawer and as many fairly deep drawers as I could get to fit. And the older I get I do not like climbing. Everything needs to be within arms reach. I understand aesthetics and beauty are vital, but in a kitchen practicality is my first consideration. I love how you make the practical so beautiful too.

As a not-so-tall person, anything in an upper cabinet in a traditional "modern" kitchen makes zero sense for me...I can't reach anything above the very bottom shelf without dragging over a ladder. The older, unfitted style of having shorter cabinets right on top of the counter, but a little recessed in, for ease of reach, makes so much sense. And shelving or pull out drawers in a long table, like a drapers table makes sense for functionality too. I agree any lower cabinet that does not have a pull out drawer seems silly. When you look at unfitted kitchens from days gone by, they already thought all that out. Whose idea was it to put wall to wall cabinets up on every wall, out of reach, I wonder?????

The problem with clay tile floors its very cold in winter time and it's very hard on your feet and back. My mom slipped on her tile floor and broke her hip and shoulder. It's like being on concrete floors all day. Just let you know it may look good but it's not as great as you think

Unfortunately, they're both having a harder time finding Miss Right. I've warned them many times to stay far away from feminists.

Agree with a lot of the great ideas here.
I would like to remind you that you probably are not going to get any taller.
I'm pretty sure I have little minions that come in every night and make my shelves and counters higher. 😉
Love drawers where lower cabinets should be. And you need a surface that is table height for mixing and kneading.
And did I mention how heavy those laundry detergent and bleach bottles get as you get older, coupled with a shelf that just gets higher and higher.
Do consider the age factor. It comes quicker than you think.
Best of luck with your project. I know you folks will do a stellar job. ❤

Angela- I am so exited to see the transformation. I had the same issue with delivery of 3 tons of terracotta tiles from France. The truck dropped two crates off at the HWY and we ended up taking individual tiles one by one and loading them onto my car. I am serious. It was a CHORE. It was the time my children wished I would be a “normal” mom who gets tiles from Lowe’s, all clean and packed delivered to our doorsteps. LOL! You can do this!

I have Italian tile and slate floors in my kitchen and 20 years later, my feet and legs feel fine. However you are right about the coldness...so ours are heated (installed ourselves back in the day) and it feel AMAZING in the winter...very cozy. Without the underfloor heating...I agree I would not like it. Also you're right about the shattering dishes although that hasn't really been too big of an issue.

Looking so forward to watching this. I have so much attraction of the french kitchens, but find a lot of it just too busy for me. But there is plenty that I love about them that I can glean from. Such as a work table instead of a built in island. My cabinets that came with my house has a very good french vibe about it. Though my cabinets are built in, they are built to look like furniture pieces (even antique painted). Complete with legs like furniture. To me, the upside of an unfitted kitchen is that the unattached cabinets can be moved our for cleaning behind and under for a sparkling clean kitchen. And the upside of built in cabinets is that I don't have to. I was worried when you said your butcher block had to go. I didn't pick up that it was the counter top that you were talking about. My horror was that it was your awesome antique butcher block table, that I LOVE, that you were speaking of.
