I was astounded at how 'spacious' this place felt. Not in square feet, but in the terms of the possessions you really need - something to wear, something to sleep on, somewhere to prepare food, something to read. Perfect...
I'm so glad that I live near this guy! My friends and I actually are friends with him, so it's so cool visiting him! We also take tons of hikes with family and friends with him.
if u know him is he on his own land and doed he still live init and how long did it take to build. Id love to know this person and walk about and chill in the night with a fire. Thats living. Not surrounded by cars and concreate.
He isn't on his own land, he kinda rents a few acres of land by friends. Never asked how long it took to build. He is probably one of the best adults I know. He is truly what people mean by living. Sitting on your butt everyday in a heated room being pampered isn't living. That's the opposite of what should be happening.
@@wtffy204 Oh wow! Tell him hi from the Galfromdownunder! I think of him every time I wear my Simple Shoes from Nordstrom Rack ... he doodles for them!
@@Galfromdownunder I would honestly really love to, I live in an apartment right now but it would be awesome to live in a camper and travel for a living
Great design, ppl that are saying it is too cramped, then customize his design i have a family of 4 so i need more space but this is looking very interesting.
I understand how you feel, the main thing to remember is we all have our needs.. the key is to achieve balance between needs and living in balance with mother earth... you can be just as sustainable in a slightly larger setup as dan is with him.. its just a matter of balance and figuring out how small you can go comfortably.. some can like dan go real small others need a slightly larger footprint.
Well I now find myself living In a New York space not much bigger than Dan's hole - a 236 sq ft studio. And it costs a lot more than his hole to flush the toot and turn on the tap! It's more than 10 years since I made that tiny vid (apologies for the funky filming - that was a 3.2 mpix camera and I was just starting to do vids). Now, in 2015, The Tiny House movement is all the rage.
Galfromdownunder You should come out to Long Island. I've had a fort-building bug since my teen years. Out here, wetlands and wooded areas off major roads here have been the prospective sites for the homeless and it has made me pursue a route out of suburbia that replicates Dan's escape. Suffolk & Nassau Counties top the nation in tax rates so you can expect an exodus towards more inexpensive living.
I ask myself that question whenever I think of back-to-landing on Long Island. There are plenty of great spots along the North Shore that are like Shelter Island (Port Jefferson, Northport/Fort Salonga, Huntington, Oyster Bay, etc.). They're hilly, too. What would be your focal points of interest for venturing?
+Galfromdownunder there is now a number of short vids of his life and living quarters. A very interesting man indeed. Nice to see how some of its changed in 10 years. He's built up quite a bit more, you'll have to revisit and see. :)
That is so damn awesome. I think that would be so fun to live in. Its like a fairy tale hobbit house and the other things are just amazing. The sweat lodge and out house are too cool. Good job and I wish that guy the best.
I currently live in a BILL-ding. My house has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths that is way more than I need. All year long this bill-ding generates BILLS. Gas, water, electric, sewer, taxes, zoning violation fees, trash-bill... maintenance bills, cable bill, and telephone-bill. My house is PAID FOR... so I don't have a mortgage-bill. Even with that, we can not afford to live here! I am so jealous of this guy, but I am not sure how to get out of this trap without money to solve the problem.
david mundy I love it - BILL-ding. Totally emphathise - I live amidst the CONDOmania and GENERIFICATION of New York City. I know someone whose modest penthouse (I know that sounds like an oxymoron) is paid off but the monthly maintenance is over $2000/month. Those on rent stabilized/controlled apartments have the best deal of all. Because you only need that expensive roof over our head while you're alive. The moment you go, someone else moves in like you never existed. Sobering thought for those of us working to pay a mortgage...
He rents the space in a field for $100 a year or something. He keeps the roof from leaking the same way you keep yours from leaking - skilful work. I always felt that all a person needs is a small piece of land and a source of water as Dan says - all these people who own 200 acres etc - what on earth for - you can't eat it or take it with you ...
When Dan says the people over there let him stay out there, I'd like to know if there are any of those people by me so I can build a place like this. Finding good land like that isn't subject to EPA regulations & building codes is getting harder with every new community building project that sprawls out.
It's in Joseph, eastern Oregon. @#$% cold in winter, but not in a space like that! a tiny ceramic heater heats the hole in 5 mins flat then you can turn it off.
I had an anxiety attack contemplating using that cramped front door. I have a recurring nightmare of being squeezed in small passageways that wakes me up in a sweat. I love everything about the house but the tiny door.
