    1. Michael Cimino wanted this scene alone to be 90 mins long. The length of a full-feature film
    2. The cast and crew had to take a 3-hour van ride from the hotel to the set. That is 3 hours each way
    3. Michael insisted that there would be an irrigation system in order to ensure that the grass was green enough, and later would be covered with blood. But he hardly captured this on film
    4. A lot of extras were fainting and being injured in this scene
    5. The horses were traumatized because of the explosion. This movie is the reason why animal rights in movie sets were taken seriously
    6. Michael was bleeding the studio dry, that other film-makers who were usually backed by UA did not get their pictures made.

      1. It was 90 minutes in the rough cut. Cimino then trimmed that down. (As Charles Elton reports, the 5.5-hour cut might have been a power-grab on Cimino’s end so that the studio would accept his later cut, even if it was over three hours. Elton also notes that Bach does not always portray events and relationships accurately.)
      2. And? You have a beautiful location and capturing it on film inevitably takes effort on everybody’s end.
      3. The verdant nature of the grass comes through in the new restoration which removes this print’s faded sepia color. And no, contrary to what’s on Wikipedia, this print doesn’t represent the original colors. The unrestored print of the short version on the French DVD LE PORTE DU PARADIS makes this clear. [Edit: I have to take this back. LE PORTE DU PARADIS seems to be taken from an interpositive which didn’t have the sepia tint applied in post.]
4-5. There were a few injuries, the battle choreographer and the riders taking the falls were experienced stuntmen, and only one horse was accidentally killed. But hey, when John Ford or Andrew Tarkovsky abuse their actors or bleed animals to death on camera - it’s ok!
      6. As Elton notes, Bach had ample opportunity to rein Cimino in. As a matter of fact, Joann Carelli, far from being Cimino’s enabler, was his most constructive critic while he was immersing himself in details, themes, and characters - as filmmakers should do. That’s why he wanted her to produce the film. That’s also why, as Elton reports, she tried reining-in Cimino herself and requested the studio heads side with her, but Stephen Bach ignored her. Yes, Cimino deserves some blame, but the majority of blame goes to Bach, who let Cimino run amok without listening to Cimino’s own advisors on what his limits were. But hey, he got a book out of it in which he blamed Cimino for ruining UA. This despite the fact that the box office bomb of HEAVEN’S GATE wasn’t a factor for Kirk Kerkorian when he bought UA for $383 million ($200 million more than Transamerica bought it for years earlier).

@@vulteiuscatellus4105 Elton's book is also full of errors and speculation. While Bach's book doesn't deserve to sit as the last word on the production, Elton's book isn't really the "take down" that some people think it is, merely the other side of the story. Besides, some of his supposedly original insights were already made by Bach, who fully admitted in his book that he failed to stand up to Cimeno when he should have.

@@zippymufo9765 I agree it makes some mistakes wrt certain production details on HEAVEN’S GATE (ie its report on how Cimino created Casper in Idaho) and some of Cimino’s scripts, but its insights into Cimino’s background and his relationship with Joann Carelli seem pretty reliable. I think you’re exaggerating how unreliable it is.

No, he puts a spin on this too. He doesn’t say how he could have reined in Cimino on the telephone call David Field participated in, nor does he go into how he repeatedly rebuffed Joann Carelli’s signals to back her up in her convos with Cimino. Cimino trusted Carelli to be his most constructive critic and Bach didn’t respect this dynamic.

@cobolsaurus Faulting Cimino for having an ego is like faulting a football player for having testosterone. Ego is the fuel Hollywood runs on. And him having an ego says nothing about the finished film.

And this is the shortened version. Before it was cut to 3 and a half hours, from over 5 hours, some who saw it, said the battle alone, was long enough to have its own movie. That's what you get for giving an egotisical Oscar winner, a blank cheque to make his movie.

Let's review the dynamics of this sequence: Two rows of immigrants riding in opposite directions surrounding the paid cattlemen's posse. The posse is on solid ground and are skilled marksmen. The immigrants are on horseback shooting wildly. Does anyone know how difficult it is to hit your target while riding a horse at full gallop? With one ring riding inside the other, the inner riders can be shot by the posse on one side or their friends on the other. Of course it would be hard to see what ANYONE is shooting at with all that dust.

Dude it’s a bunch of untrained farmers beginning combat to stop their community from being picked off one by one in bounties, they aren’t expected to be the next einsenhowers, plus the next scene shows how a actual law enforcement officer organizes them into fighting capability.

It's completly unclear to me why the immigrants attacked in such a rush and killed themselves in carriage accidents. Next they run into their enemies without cover (but the enemies also don't cover).
