The same exact thing happened to my truck. After disassembly I got some longer screws and put it back together so I can use it as a backup if I need it.
Here’s a really fun fact I learned today trying it myself. If you give the plastic dash piece a little yank from the bottom, it’ll snap out of place enough to work your hands behind it and push the clips in with your hand, no destruction required👍🏼
Eric - I sincerely appreciate you posting this video. Like you, the only video's I'd seen had folks tearing their dash apart, and I really hate doing that. I watched this video and went out there with a small screwdriver; took me about 2-3 minutes (seriously). Thanks for taking the time to make this. Not all hero's wear capes. Thanks, Mike
This just happened to me today on my 2014 FX4. The whole unit just came out when I barely touched it. I'm ordering the replacement now thanks to your video. I have a feeling you saved me A LOT of money! I guess my question is WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE??? I'm always very careful with my stuff. Cheap plastic maybe? Anyways, thanks a million buddy!... SUBSCRIBED!👍👍
Just had it happen to my 2011 Raptor with the E-locker. Started prying and the entire switch came out in one piece. Spent 42 bucks on Amazon for the OEM switch and 2 minutes of labor. Thank you for the great vid man!
This just heppened to me on the way back from South Carolina to Fort Myers FL.. Happened right around Jacksonville.. My whole switch came apart for no reason.. Literally just fell off while driving.. Every time we slowed down below 20mph, I had to push the face back in forcefully to keep it from engaging
I am so excited. Because of your video, I exchanged my knob because it came apart in my hand & it only took me about 3 mins to do. I am a widow & knew the dealer would charge way to much. It is a simple job with needle nose pliers & a screw driver. Once the clips are released, the sensor part comes out just like you did, unplug the old unit & plug in the new one & clip it back in the dash. Total price…$20.10 with 3 days getting here from Amazon. Can you believe it!? If I can do the job, then anyone can. No more going into 4x4 mode anymore & not being able to drive my truck. Stays on 4x2 & no problems whatsoever! Thank You so much. With the help of the Lord & you, I fixed my own F-150. God Bless you!!!! ❤⚔🙌🏻🙏🏻
Ya, my 2012 Lariat at 160,000 + miles the rear end started hopping as I was pulling out of Sam’s parking lot. I pulled over and went to rear of my truck checking underneath. So started off again and in the parking lot rear tires screeched when I turned. So thought can’t be rear brakes lock up bc only happens when turning so differential went bad. I turned the 4 wheel switch from 4A which I usually keep it on to 2x4 and then noticed little symbol on dash display which looked like a stick drawing of a truck with all 4 wheels turned 45 degrees to the right. No idea what symbol was so took owners manual out of glove box and searched. In the symbol explanation section Nothing looked like it. Finally, 10 minutes later paging thru manual found it. I went on You Tube from my phone and found a couple videos on electronic locking differential. So pushing the switch in and holding it would turn if off until I got above 20 mph then it shuts off. I ordered switch online, arrived 5 days later; wrong switch! I needed it with the 4A on it. I called local Ford dealer gave him last 8 of VIN and it would be only about ten dollars more than the wrong part and they could have it next day. I ordered it and return the wrong switch. The one thing I did different from other videos is that I disconnected negative & positive battery cables before I changed switch just keep them from touching anything esp. the positive to the body. I’m paranoid about a power surge with all the transistors/computer chips in the vehicles today. Plus, then I cleaned the battery post bc proper voltage is important to all the chips in these new fangled vehicles.
Good move disconnecting the battery! I should have done that, but I got lucky and had no issues. Don’t you just love it when you fix things and save money! Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I'm replacing mine on my 2014. Very helpful. I too could not find a video on this replacement...l am wondering if the check 4x4 warning actually canceled itself or did you need to manually reset the dash screens computer?
Same issue 2014 Raptor. Switch was broken on right side. Diff stayed on. Pushed on right side and slid a piece of zip tie in left side. Let go right side and pulled on zip tie to to make right side tilt in to connect. Whole front half of switch broke off today. Did what Eric said to get back half out, and it worked. Pushed new switch ($50) in and all is well. Ford says 4 hours labor to R&R console and dash.
Glad it worked out for you and all the money you saved! I wonder if the dealer is doing it this way but charging to R&R the console? Surely they’ve figured this out…thanks for watching!
My 2013 F150 switch failed and the first part was easy because the failure mode is that one of the two mocro screws has failed so just grab the switch and pull and the othet will break free with la little pull. the second part was what this video was GREAT for.

I ripped that switch right out of the dash in the parking lot when I was about ready to lose my mind with the diff locked this weekend! I held the button down for 30 mins on the way home. Didn’t realize it wouldn’t engage while driving. *facepalm*. Thanks for the great vid! Took me less than 3 mins to replace. Also great call out on the right switch. Most ones on Amazon/auto zone sites don’t have the 4A. I had to order from Ford website!

Also the 4 WD goes off after 25 mph on my truck. I just have to hold the button until I get to that speed. I’ll be glad when my part gets here from Amazon.
Just did this fix myself. Took literally 3 minutes. No dash apart and no scratches. Just used a mini flat head screwdriver and my fingers and some muscle. Original one came right out. Plug in the connector in the back side, pushed the switch back into the dash and it makes another clicking sound. Done deal. Works like a charm again and no more 4x4 issues when its cold outside. AWESOME VIDEO! It took my ol man less than 5 minutes to do this switch replacement. I got your video from a member of a Facebook group I am in. Ford F-150 5.0 owners. Some laughed at me because I’m a chick. But one member, a biker minister, was SO KIND, to share this & follow up with me / us! I might be a chick…but I have always driven trucks & my own motorcycles! Tomboy in heels! Again thank you so very much!
Excellent! Had the exact problem as a result of my granddaughter turning knobs. This saved me a trip to the mechanic and who knows how much $, plus the embarrassment of it being so simple. Thanks for the video.
Wish I’d seen this before I bought my part…but it works as temp fix for now, I just don’t have 4 wheel low. Thank you for saving me a lot of frustration with my truck!!!
After watching your video I went at the pull switch with channel lock pliers. I pulled the round nob off and then grabbed the working unit and pulled it out exactly like the video. A small flat head screw driver to pop the three locking tabs and the assembly pulled free. Disconnected the wiring and new switch plugged in and pressed into the spot no problems. Thank you for this video!
Eric--Thanks for the video I have a 2015 F150 platinum and after watching your video it took me less than five minutes to replace the switch--saved me a ton of money, switch cost me $86 and my five minutes of labor--Thanks great video !!
Awesome video man, my truck is doing the same thing, it’s a 2014 FX4 with the same knob. I’ll get the part and follow your instructions. Thanks again for posting.
That fixed it right up, the new knob isn’t loose anymore or anything. So nice not to have to hold in on that thing anymore lol. I bought mine new off eBay for 36 bucks so that’s a cheap fix, thanks again for the easy instructions, way better than the ones of dudes taking everything apart. Have a good day
This worked perfectly for me. It took less than 10 minutes to get the old one out and the new one installed! A shop priced this swap at $360 (including the new part)!
Thanks agin for sharing! Having this issue now and almost shit when I seen a guy talk about pulling the dash apart. He then ripped it out like you but didnt show how to replace the part.
Awesome video my man . Waiting on my new switch and I too hadn’t found any vids actually showing the removal of the faulty switch . Your video gave me peace of mind that it shouldn’t be a big deal to replace . Thanks again!!
Eric, you the man! Your video was exactly what I needed. I ordered the factory OEM part online for $50 and did it myself. Some laughed at me because I’m a chick. But one member, a biker minister, was SO KIND, to share this & follow up with me / us! I might be a chick…but I have always driven trucks & my own motorcycles! Tomboy in heels! Again thank you so very much!
That just made my day! So happy to help!
Excellent! Had the exact problem as a result of my granddaughter turning knobs. This saved me a trip to the mechanic and who knows how much $, plus the embarrassment of it being so simple. Thanks for the video.
Awesome! Glad I could help out!
🔥🔥👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
👍
Wish I’d seen this before I bought my part…but it works as temp fix for now, I just don’t have 4 wheel low. Thank you for saving me a lot of frustration with my truck!!!
No problem, glad to help! Thanks for watching!

To fix it? Wow! Hope you fixed it yourself!

Fixed my 2013 f150 King Ranch, your way yesterday, God bless
That’s awesome! Glad I could help yah!
Awesome! Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!

Awesome video man, my truck is doing the same thing, it’s a 2014 FX4 with the same knob. I’ll get the part and follow your instructions. Thanks again for posting.
Awesome, glad to help! It’s an easy fix and you don’t have to take apart the dash! Thanks for watching, let me know how it goes!
Have a good day
@@dereksmith1869 freaking awesome! Don’t you love fixing it yourself and saving all the money!
Thanks!!!

That’s awesome! Glad it worked for you!
This worked perfectly for me. It took less than 10 minutes to get the old one out and the new one installed! A shop priced this swap at $360 (including the new part)!
Awesome! Glad it worked out for you!
Thanks! Needle nose small Vice-Grips to hold outward pressure makes it cake. The clips don't pop back in.
Mine just popped back in, good to know!
Thanks agin for sharing! Having this issue now and almost shit when I seen a guy talk about pulling the dash apart. He then ripped it out like you but didnt show how to replace the part.
Glad to help out! I could have filmed it live and it would have been a 5-10 min video, super easy!
Awesome video my man . Waiting on my new switch and I too hadn’t found any vids actually showing the removal of the faulty switch . Your video gave me peace of mind that it shouldn’t be a big deal to replace . Thanks again!!
Glad to help! Let me know how it goes!
Thank you for this! This switch recently started giving me issues and you helped me swap it out in less than 5 minutes.
That’s great! Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Thanks!!
Glad to help!
Eric, you the man! Your video was exactly what I needed. I ordered the factory OEM part online for $50 and did it myself. My switch was the one without 4x4Auto and it came out the same way and went in the same way. Needle nose and a small flathead screw driver was all I needed. 2013 F150 XLT Super Crew now like new! Thank you!
That’s awesome! Glad I could help you out!
Thanks
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. I purchased my switch and should be installing it within 24 hrs.

My 2012 has an issue with it popping out when it’s cold... I taped it down until I get it replaced 😂
Lol, it’s an easy fix, just make sure you order the correct switch for your truck! Thanks for watching!
This just happened to me over the weekend. Thanks, this was super helpful!

Thanks for this video. I was going to try to remove the dash, but I also have the center console, which makes it more difficult. Doing it this way was super easy and took me less than 5 minutes from start to finish.
That’s awesome! I’m so happy this helped you out! Happy New Year!
Nice vid man
