I prefer a Leatherman over a pocket knife. 100% agree about boom stick for defense. Might consider some match light charcoal. Wool sole inserts are great for the winter.

  • @richardhenry1969
    @richardhenry1969 10 днів тому +5

I prefer a poncho and liner. There are many different brands an they are affordable.
Next thing i believe you need 3 blades. A work knife about 3.5 -4in. A kitchen knife. Finally a machete around 14in next and probably most importantly a folding saw.
When setting up a kit for a disaster or whatever. My advice everyone should have a go bag able to sustain you for 72hrs.
First a bag 25-45 liters. The more you know the less frear you pack.
    Next sleeping gear/shelter
A tarp and rope(550, bankline) air mattress, sleeping bag.
    Next water bottle(single wall aluminum)
    a cup 750ml. (metal)
Cooking gear alcohol stove, an twig stove.
    Light flashlight and head lamp.
Always take extra underwear. At least a days extra clothes. In winter you want something to sleep in different then your daily wear.
This list is basic you learn by going and using. Start by car camping then do a weekend hike.
Once you can do 2 days and a night. Everything is the same just more food.
Only gear that's important to me is what i need to sleep because that can make everything miserable. Sleep good you'll feel good.

Steve, since I am 78 now, the only thing I can currently comment on is the lanterns. In TX in 21',22' ice stirm. Lost grid for whole state of TX. NOT INSULATED FOR WINTER ICE STORM. MY SON BROUGHT ME, FAINT😅, THE 3 PC. SET. FROM WALMART. I LOVED IT. I USED THE MIDDLE ONE TO READ BY. LATER, I BOUGHT ANOTHER ONE. SO, I HAVE BATTERIES...A LIT. MAINLY LED SMALL FLASH LIGHTS. I LIVE IN METROPLEX IN A SENIOR LIVING COMPLEX. SO, I NEVER KNEW THIS, BUT, 5X UTS ELECTRICITY FROM OTHER STATES WHEN NEEDED. NO THE GRID WAS NOT INSULATED FOR SEVERE ICE STORM. I THINK THERE WAS 1 IN 78'. WE HAD A HOUSE THEN. BUT, DID NOT LOSE POWER. JUST CERTAIN AREAS. SO, THOSE LANTERNS ARE GREAT. NOT "BUGGING OUT". SINCE WE BOTH BELIEVE THE SAME, I HAVE ASKED GOD FOR 1 OF HIS MILLIONS OF MILLIONS OF WARRING FOR MY SENIOR AOT. AND COMPLEX. EPH. 6:10-17. ARMOR OF GOD. I WATCHED WHEN YOU TREKKED ALL OVER EUROPE. I HAVE TO TELL YOU, AS I AM SURE YOUR MOM DID, " WATCH YOUR BACK" AND PUT YOUR GLOVES ON😊. BLESSINGS.

Rain Gear - Steve is right, if it rains you get wet. It doesn't matter what you have, if you don't get wet from Rain, then you will get wet from sweat, for amy prolonged rain. I haven't used frog togs, but use very light weight rain gear. Mt Goat. PCT, CDT, GDT, and this year PNT (Pacific Northwest Trail).
About Merrill Shoes - These aren't typical shoes for thru hikers, but as the saying goes, hike your own hike. Trail Runners, and Ultras are common, I of course have to use something different... New Balance 608 (classic trainer).
Packs - Granite Gear seems to last (for me) only 1 ( 5 month) thru hike. I switched over to the ULA brand Ohm, and have done 3 thru hikes on it. (ULA seems to like electronics, so their Backpack products are Circuit, Ohm)

Those wide brim floppy hats, in the summer you can wet them down and the added evaporation will cool the hat and your head. I've got one with the "neck drape. A great summer hat. Winter, as the temperatures drop I go from polyester, to wool then to fur.
Merrill, I wear them out in 500 miles of walking a big dog, the soles are almost gone, separation of the upper starting, the lace "straps" worn. I used to like Vasque, but they have gotten so expensive that the cost per mile is no longer worth it. Those four weeks in the winter where there is serious snow on the ground I have good "pac boots" and extra felt liners to change every day.
Not only LED lanterns, but kerosene lanterns and even vegetable oil lamps and candles.
The Gray Man look. A small midwest town commentary
This town has every look. You can walk into any business in town wearing a business suit, carhart work pants. a branded hoodie such as a college, the local tree trimmer, the meat packing plant, any hat from leather to ball cap to boonie to straw to fur. Any brand of boots including milsurp to flip flops. Concealed carry to indiscreet barely concealed carry of handguns, folding knives, fixed blades, hatchets, once in a while a chain saw. Long guns are usually transported in a soft shell case to the range or hunting. Accessories from a briefcase, shoulder sling, hand carried tool box, a five gallon bucket, 20 liter day pack, finally, rare but possible 60 liter full size backpack. Vehicle anything from bicycle, to 30 year old sedan that may or may not have rust, to full kitted out adventure rig with dualies, a camper, winch and trailer hitch. Dogs, toys to huge mastiffs named TANK and BEEF. Race, white, northern, southern, eastern European, Native American, Hispanic, Oriental, South Asian, African from the old country, Aftican-American. There's no gray man in this town. So you can dress or carry as you want and not stand out.

I posted about this before, quality over weight. You get use to the weight after a few days when hiking. Quality on the other hand is worth the extra fatigue. A good belt belt with purses and pouches (old fashion distinction between round and square) is a must along with a canteen. Your hips and legs can handle the weight especially with women. A hunting fixed blade knife that's 5 1/2 inches by 2 inches or so is better then a pocket knife. You can use it to flip burgers and other stuff like that. A knife in a sheath with a snap strap can be used easily with one hand and has less things that can go wrong.
People are all about high tech and new gizmos. It's all fine and dandy until it's not. Batteries run out and so on. Low tech and what worked in the past like a candle and flint 'n steel shouldn't be overlooked. We can't allow ads and other such things cloud our judgement on things. Also, even if we have the right tools not being able to use them correctly isn't that good either.

I come from Europe and many here love Meindl shoes. I have them in very heavy quality. Mountain shoes in the c/d category. I feel very confident because you can also give big kicks with it. This gives you a certain look that makes certain individuals prefer to choose another victim. You can also walk very far with this without injuries, because if your feet don't want to go any further, you stop completely. Personally, I think that good shoes are the priority.

So glad you added some new SHTF prepper ideas to stash. Love the Frog Togs. I had a $3 windbreaker that I purchased on a close out rack while attending a NASCAR race at least 23 years ago finally give up its ghost. It was just a windbreaker but it kept me so warm, dry, whether riding motorcycles, cruising in the dunes, or camping on the ground in the Sierras.

I like the taller hiking boots/shoes. Because if a little rock seems to flip in more easily when they’re short like the ones you have and then I have to figure out how to get that rock out and I’m not good at standing on 1 foot. So I like a little taller, but alsohelps my ankles a little better. And I have some well broken boots. I actually went through one pair because of all my days so right now they’re in my vehicle with a heavy pair of socks just in case. Because I don’t feel if you’re doing a lot of walking to tennis shoes is not so good at least not for Me.

The whole point of breathability in coats is to avoid any sweating. You are basically wearing more than you need and the excess heat escapes. Your set-up is more for lighter weight applications. Wear less, stay warm, but get soaked with sweat. About the most dangerous thing you can do in a cold situation is getting wet.

It’s a boonie hat. They are good for sun protection. Basically a jungle hat. Still got my Jansport back pack from high school. It’s so old says made in America on it. They still make the same one but it’s not made in America. Jansport will repair or replace your bag if it breaks. You just send it to them. So basically it’s a buy once bag. Looks like a student bag not military. Got a lantern like that it’s good and was cheap. An extra set of batteries can store in the top.

Being a person who spends as much time as possible outside, I have really come to loathe most newer raingear. What is the point of "water resistant" and "breathable" raingear? If it can only keep you dry from car to building before the water soaks you, it is not raingear! I'm not aware of any places that only get an occasional light mist where these things might actually be suitable for.
Speaking of jackets/coats, is anyone else totally frazzled with the hoods on them? I swear they're impossible to keep on my head. Some are sized for a baby while others would cover an elephant's head. My most waterproof raincoat has a hood that covers my whole head down to my chin and the toggles don't cinch it up enough to even come close to fitting properly. I've noticed so many items that I've bought over the last decade have been "improved" to the point of being useless for their original purpose and they call this "progress"?

Sure for just sitting, standing, or walking while unobstructed they work, but as soon as it touches anything it rips. You use the British pound as a metric for monday...that's odd...how much in u.s.dollars??u are American right?

    • @cheryl_345
      @cheryl_345 11 днів тому

YES, Steve is American. I am chuckling to myself. I missed when he said metric and English pounds. 😅
FROM 57' to 60' WE were PCS IN ENGLAND. Money easy to learn as a 11 yr old. SO.... I have listened to many platforms that men, on this subject use...." METRIC" SYSTEM. THEY USUALLY ARE WIDELY TRAVELED. PLUS😂....I AM A LOT YOUNGER😅 THAN STEVE....NOT. THEY STARTED TEACHING THE METRIC SYSTEM AFTER I GRADUATED HS. IN 64'.😊 SO, I DO NOT KNOW. BUT, I AM COMMENTING, BECAUSE IN 57' THE ENGLISH POUND WAS WORTH....$2.80 IN AMERICAN MONEY. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS TODAY. BUT, I HAVE FOUND ON PLATFORMS OF THIS SUBJECT, MEN ONLY REFER TO METRIC. OR MILITARY.... LIKE " CLICKS". WHATEVER. IN ANY EVENT, I HAVE NEVER BEEN BACK PACKING. I HAVE BEEN HUNTING FOR DEER WHEN MARRIED WITH MY HUSBAND. NOW, MY SON, GDSON..... Hunt. Both my GDSON and GDDAUGHTER started at about 9 and 7. BB' s 1st..then the natural next. NOW, uh, they both at 21 and 19 can use use the 2 long broomsticks. Yes, have short ones. BUT, I watched a um....video about the best to have , if sand blowing....if you present ...A short one .... Things scatter. Not afraid of big boom stick, but, short one.
SO, went past your question, but, NASDAC SHOULD SHOW EXCHANGE RATE. OR GOOGLE. ALSO IN METRICS. AT 78, I AM NOT GOING HIKING, BACKPACKING. I HAVE IN MY LIFE DONE TINS 8F PHYSICAL WORK . IF, A LIT IF PROPERTY YOU WILL GET YOUR WORKOUT BY SPLITTING LOGS WITH GASOLINE LOG SPLITTER. THEN STACKING, THEN LOADING WHEELBARROW DOWN TO BACK F HOUSE AND LOAD A LOG RACK. ENOUGH SAID. NEVER WILL DO AGAIN. STOPPED, WHEN 61.
WATCH MARIA BARTOLOMA SP? ON FOX BUSINESS CHANNEL. OR FUTURES.
      BLESSINGS.
