Most of the players from the 70s are old and reaching the end of their careers. First 10+ loss season in 25 years. His final NFL win was knocking WSH out of the playoffs. There is some talent (Herschel Walker, Michael Irvin, Nate Newton, Ken Norton Jr, Bill Bates) but a rebuild is needed. Congrats on winning Tank Bowl. Make your first overall pick a good one 3. Scooter doesn't know jack about Cowboys history. He also wasn't around during the dynasty years. He should probably watch this video on premise alone so he can learn something.
I remember my dad talking about how much he hated the Cowboys. He said he used to love the team during the Landry years even though he grew up in LA. He said a lot of people did but were mad when Jones fired Landry in favor of Jimmy Johnson. He talked about a lot of people hating what the Cowboys became under Johnson. We'll ignore the fact that my dad is a die hard Raiders and John Madden fan with a 3 foot painting of Lyle Azado holding a tattered Chiefs Jersey in the air.
You know why the Cowboys were able to get away with it? At the same time Michael Jordan was the golden goose for sports and media: the best AND a role model for kids. It's a lot easier to ignore a bad example when you can just point to a good one instead.
Not entirely sure but I see your point. Michael was the world's most known athlete during the decade, but the Cowboys unquestionably had the most notoriety. The Cowboys, along with the 1994 MLB player's strike happening simultaneously, cemented the NFL's #1 status in the US and made it virtually unchallengeable. It was at a changing time in the US, where the old, mid-century style of US living and cultural decorum was rapidly declining and being woven into the xenomorph it is today. They beat up on the likeable 49ers, the upstart Packers, the fun little Bills, and the gritty Steelers. The league was already popular, but the reinvigoration of the Cowboys helped make sports a 24/7 phenom, as everyone wanted to know what the players (and coaches) were doing at every second of every day.
@@jaxonwoods8181 Michael Jordan was more than just the most known athlete in the 90's, he was the most famous person alive, bigger than rock stars and heads of state and even Mickey Mouse. He's the headline 99 times out of 100 over the Cowboys.

Help me, I’ve been on the toilet for 59 minutes and 29 seconds and I don’t think my legs work anymore. Loved the video dude. Do more of these if you have the time please
The 3rd in a row would have depended on how Deion felt about playing for Jimmy. If he goes to Dallas a year earlier…they may have won 4 in a row. 5 in a row? Ehhhh…..the issues they had in 1996 weren’t totally due to coaching. Irvin and Lett both had suspensions during the season, Haley was out most of the year, Novacek was out the entire year, Emmitt was banged up most of the year….regardless of coach, I don’t think 5 in a row was in the cards. 4 is possible though.
I’m a bigger fan of his work at Miami than cowboys, honestly that 80s Miami team was crazy and way more intertaining than his days coaching the cowboys.
Thanks for the vid Perna. I was born on 98 just after the "glory hole" days and have only heard the clean version or tight-lipped about the dark side of the 90s boys. I know you said never again for a vid as long as this but i like long form content. Thats double for stuff i care about, like football, so if you could find more good stories to strech into longer vids, I'd be appreciated.
Had the internet been a thing back in the early 90s, the Cowboys would have been nothing but scandals. At its core, people do forget "being canceled" is actually just being held accountable for one's actions. Michael Irvin would have gone to jail had cell cameras existed back then. I watched a lot of football as a kid in the 80s, but mostly skipped the era when the Cowboys were winning. Kinda glad I spent my college years doing other things on Sundays.
As a 49ers fan, I hated the Cowboys because they kept beating us in the NFC Championship game. Looking back, that was one of the greatest offensive lines ever assembled. Everyone knew the run was coming, but nobody could stop it.
Brilliant, Brandon. A thoroughly entertaining ride through debauchery. The 90s were more fun, I think we can all agree. The 70s were perhaps more fun. Despite the squeaky clean image of "America's Team" in the 70s, it's worth remembering that the novel and then-movie, "North Dallas Forty", were based on the Cowboys of the 60s and early 70s. And I suppose if you made a similar video about the 70s Raiders, your video would be flagged by UA-cam bots.
Correct information: 1. Switzer did change to a passing offense for Aikman, but Aikman broke his leg in the game against Miami. This caused Switzer to return to the Wishbone and he won a national championship with a freshman QB name Jamel Hollaway. This is why Aikman transferred to UCLA with Switzer's help. 2. Johnson drafted Welsh in the suppliment draft, so he could trade him and acquire more draft picks. He had no intention of replacing Ailman with Welsh. Johnson wanted Aikman when he was at OSU, he wanted Aikman when Aikman transferred to UCLA, and wanted Aikman when he went to the Cowboys... 3. The person who covered Rice in the 1992 NFC championship game and said, "I own Jerry Rice" was Larry Brown (1995 SB MVP), not Kevin Smith... 4. Jones was drinking with his assistance coaches and said, "100 coaches could win a SB with the Cowboys roaster". Word got back to Johnson and that was the straw that broke the camels back. Also, Jones was upset that Johnson had talked to Jacksonville without his permission... 5. Aikman is on record as saying he was excited about Switzer being the head coach. He even told Irving, who was upset about Johnson leaving, that Switzer would be tough like Johnson (which is was at Oklahoma, but not in Dallas)...

And as the narrator pointed out the silliness of his baptism ridding his demons, can’t argue with the results! Deion Sanders basically said he wants his QB to be an upstanding Christian coach’s son, and his defensive linemen full of demons and felonies lol
Troy Aikman credits Charles with the cowboys winning their 3 SB. I always believed it was the big three Aikman Smith and Irving. That was till, I saw the interview Aikman did, on his a football life episode. Where he said, before Charles we couldn't spell super bowl.

@@akouri6967 Watson being a POS doesn't make it worse. It's the trading of more draft capital and Watson having an even worse contract than Wilson that makes it worse.

Barry Switzer has one of the wildest life stories. Skip Bayless has wrote a good booked called Hell Bent which goes into his time in Dallas. There's a lot of overlap with Pearlman's book but it's an interesting perspective.
Hard to feel bad for Broncos fans. Three rings since 1997 and four SB appearances. Not to mention the three AFC titles in four years in the late 80s. Not many teams have three rings. And only a couple teams have eight Super Bowl appearances. If they have a lean 10-15 year run I’m not going to feel bad for them.
I work at a bar in Illinois. I have to constantly remind the old heads that I've seen 3 Superbowl wins in my life time, the Bears had 1, and at least we beat the Packers for our first... The last fact usually gets a smile and a better tip. Also we are bad at football right now.

As a Cowboys fan, brilliant job Perna.. Wish it was longer tbh, those stories are neverending, loved every second
That was pretty legit, BP. Looking forward to more long-format media from ya.
This is one of the best Ball Deep, rather documentary ever. This is why ESPN is failing.
Great episode. You have the best football channel out there. Would love to see you do some BESTBALL drafts next season!
In the words of Secret Base: "Randy and Randall tossing them a shovel and making them dig"
Funny the timing of this. I just watched the "Catholics vs Convicts" 30 for 30 talking about the Miami and Notre Dame rivalry.
Scooter about to get PTSD seeing this video
I'm surprised he hasn't commented already. You'd think with how bad them boys have been he'd want to hide away in the glory hole days.
Scooter was probably either too young to remember or wasn't even born during the dynasty years 🤣🤣🤣
Troy Aikman won 94 games in the 90's the MOST during that decade. He was hurt A LOT and STILL won 94 games. That's the amazing the thing.
As an eagles fan, I approve this video
Steelers fan here also approves haha
Cowboys fan, thats fair 😞
Falcons. Boo did I scare you?
Jealousy?
Oh, we love this shit in Houston.

You know why the Cowboys were able to get away with it? At the same time Michael Jordan was the golden goose for sports and media: the best AND a role model for kids. It's a lot easier to ignore a bad example when you can just point to a good one instead.
Not even like Michael Jordan was a good role model, bro was out here punching teammates and gambling to no end
I assumed it was because the inconvenient stuff was easier to bury back then

“Haley is what you might call ehh uhh ‘Crazy Person’” Ayo lmfaoo subscribing off that alone 😭😭😭 One of the most truthful dives I’ve heard abt Dallas in the 90s 🙌🏾
Thanks Perna, Will and Johnny, I love yalls balls deep vids I appreciate you guys making amazing funny content
Appreciate that!
I'm a Cowboys fan and grew up in the Dallas/Ft Worth area I was in High school back in these days and the 90s Cowboys were extremely wild
This puts new meaning behind Jerry Jones saying "glory hole days"
amazing how well you can do with a Hall of Fame coach and no salary cap
Help me, I’ve been on the toilet for 59 minutes and 29 seconds and I don’t think my legs work anymore.
Loved the video dude. Do more of these if you have the time please
But what if you fall into another toilet spell? 😢
This reminds me of the 30 for 30 about those University of Miami teams. Such a great documentary
The way you said "He was certifiably fucking insane!" was so perfect and funny!
Thank you so much for this video, Mr Perna! This was a genuine treat. You are easily the most entertaining football UA-cam channel that exists!
If Jimmy Johnson hadn't left/quit/been fired, the 90s Cowboys would've won 5 Super Bowls in a row, and you'll never convince me otherwise.
Well, his guys would have aged out at some point, but maybe you're right. Glad they didn't though. Losing Jerruh is so much fun!
I would say they would be the first team to three peat , maybe even won four but, I can see a three peat
Love you Brandon, cheers from Argentina!
I'm totally unrelated to this comment, but cheers to you too✌️✌️✌️
Had the internet been a thing back in the early 90s, the Cowboys would have been nothing but scandals.
Hating at its finest, go home
We found the marxist in the comments. No actual person thinks cancelation means being held acccountable.
You sound like a white guy for Harris 😂
“White guy for Kamala” type comment 😂
Correct information:
This was a great video!
I started watching Perna years ago and seeing how much this cuannel has grown is extremely satisfying. You are absolutely hilarious and clever, but also very knowledgeable. Top 10 least annoying dudes on UA-cam, and probably like top 3 least bad sports UA-camrs. Keep on keepin' on. Life's a garden, dig it?
"Stayed up wide awake at night thinking about death." Suddenly Aikman is the most relatable NFL QB I know.
And as the narrator pointed out the silliness of his baptism ridding his demons, can’t argue with the results! Deion Sanders basically said he wants his QB to be an upstanding Christian coach’s son, and his defensive linemen full of demons and felonies lol
Reminds me of Sid Justice and Arn Anderson 😅
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
I’m on a three hour long road trip and that’s good sports releases the longest video ever, Christmas came early

Gotta hand it to ya Perna for the deep dive hour video into the Cowboys. Favorite channel by far!
Dion only had two interceptions his first year with the Cowboys because no quarterback with throw towards his side of The field
the long format is a big effort for you perna but this was an absolute treat.
You're on fire right now with your content...insightful and hilarious. Keep em' coming Perna!
Troy Aikman credits Charles with the cowboys winning their 3 SB. I always believed it was the big three Aikman Smith and Irving. That was till, I saw the interview Aikman did, on his a football life episode. Where he said, before Charles we couldn't spell super bowl.
I thought I was gonna hate your channel and style but I've squeezed so much enjoyment out of your channel in the past couple years. You got me, big man. I hope your broncos do well. My eagles ain't goin' anywhere
I remember you said you were planning this video in the off season and I'm glad it finally happened. The 90s Cowboys are the reason everyone outside of Texas laughs their ass off every January when they implode in the playoffs.😂
I am a Cardinals fan, and Aeneas Williams will always be the best CB of all-time (at least the 90's) in my mind.
Your comments about Deon's work ethic just further solidifies my feelings.
Steelers losing to the cowboys in Super Bowl XXX is one of my earliest memories, thanks for reopening that wound Perna 😂
Amazing to think that game was played in the tiny Sun Devil Stadium….also fitting
Cowboys fan since 93’ when I was 8 years old…. Those 90’s cowboys teams were something special

I bet in 10 years people will compare the Deshaun Watson and Herschel Walker trades as equally catastrophic when the Texans win their third superbowl
Texans gonna get bounced
Yeah and even compare their woman treating habits.
Russell Wilson trade already forgotten? How much is he getting paid to leave, again? But, sure. Watson is a terrible person. That doesn't make the trade worse.
@@akouri6967 Watson being a POS doesn't make it worse. It's the trading of more draft capital and Watson having an even worse contract than Wilson that makes it worse.
@@bigbearkat2010 As much as the new generation denies the value of high character and morals, it very much matters, especially in positions of authority like starting QB. The Browns have been crushed by bad character guys enough to know better by now..

Dude that was really good. You should definitely add long docuvideos to your back catalog ya bum
I literally love this format style of video. Longer episodes as special occasion stuff absolutely rocks
As a Vikings fan, why do we have to keep getting reminded of the early 90's... :(
As a Vikings fan, you could say that about any era...
I mean….we could talk about 1998 if you want….🤷♂️
Brett farve choking.
The initiation of the salary cap in 1994 helped the downfall as well.
In some alternate universe, the Vikings coaches talk Mike Lynn out of the Herschel Walker trade, keep their draft picks, and become the NFL dynasty of the 1990s. Crazy.
They’d have to pick up Charles Hailey too who Aikman credits for 3 SB’s and be able to handle him beating his meat in front of everyone.
I'm a big Steve Beuerlien guy his 1998 season with the vaunted Carolina Panthers was truly something to behold
Micah parsons was literally accused of half of the stuff that Haley was at Penn State. The only difference was parsons wasn’t in the NFL yet. His story WAS covered up.
That only boosted his stock with Jerry wanting to get back to the glory hole days 🤗
Excellent! Please do more long episodes 😊
70s belonged to Pittsburgh not Dallas
Great video Perna & Johnny & Will!
As a Steelers fan, I will always believe that O'Donnell intentionally threw that Super Bowl. There's no other explanation for those mind blowing throws directly to Brown. Ironically, both got big paydays, O'Donnell with the Jets and Brown with the Raiders, and both were never heard from again.
The tradeoff for ODonnell was that he played for the Jets
There's a lot of fixed games in all sports championships that's why they call it sports entertainment the Patriots and Chiefs have been obviously giftwrapped games for them by the league and referees same with the Lakers so many blatant obvious one sided officiating towards the end of games to give the other teams guaranteed victories
Speculation and conspiracy...with NO FACTS!
I'm a Cowboys fan, but I think that I need to read this book. Thank you, Brandon Perna.
"The 70's belonged to the cowboys"?
I think the Steelers 4 superbowls might have something to say about that.
Just because they won four super bowls and beat the Cowboys in two of them doesn’t mean anything!
As a die hard Eagles fan that grew up in this era, I skipped right to the "fall" part of the video. Don't wanna relive that nightmare again.
These are my favorite videos of yours. Love nfl history!

Great video!! I lived through thr era and still watched.
Very informative video 😊
This was great, Perna! I don't know how well the longer videos do for the channel, but I always love them. They keep my full attention the entire time, no matter how long they are, and I always learn new stuff. Thank you!!!
Thanks!
Barry Switzer has one of the wildest life stories. Skip Bayless has wrote a good booked called Hell Bent which goes into his time in Dallas. There's a lot of overlap with Pearlman's book but it's an interesting perspective.
all i can say is seeing that clip of barry sanders running over the cowboys... classic
Thank you for recommending that book as a Cowboy fan I've read it multiple times and it's a wealth of information on those 90s cowboys.
*Very hard* to feel bad for them…
*Also…* *THEY’RE STUCK IN 2012-2015.* 🙄😒
Don’t feel bad for us for one second. Denver is not a poverty franchise. The Broncos are nfl royalty.
