This! Just brilliant. What a songwriter to have a lyric that goes "la la la la la la la la la la la, something, something, Caroline" and means so much in the arc of the song. Genius!
I just turned 65 and have always kept an ear opened for new music. I've been listening to Laura since "I Speak... and am so impressed in her progression, much like Kate Bush through the 70's and 80's; I even love the side-trip with LUMP. I hope she never stops; 4 years was too long.
My wife's name is Karolina, she turned 40 years old today on 10-24-24 and I seen this song 24 minutes after you released the video. The words are crazy. The universe aligned.
I've listened to the new album in its entirety while walking in the mountains near my house. An experience I highly recommand. Patterns in Repeat fits so perfectly with fall's moody atmosphere. It's a beautiful opus.
Yes, there's Cohen and Dylan, and she reflects Mitchell as well. But I'm not as thrilled with her voice like I was Joni, Leonard, or Dylan. This song the voice really works tho bc the story is exactly like what Cohen would sing. And the melody is classic early Cohen. She knows.
My mother's name is Caroline, and for a series of events that happened in my childhood, I'm estranged from her now. And, man, does this song hit a chord. The older I get the more I see parts of her in myself, and it breaks my heart. It's so hard to love and miss someone this much, but know it's better off with the distance. Love you mum.
I'm sat listening to this, thinking about the time I introduced my mates to Alas... when we were smoking weed as students. How the fuck was that 15+ years ago?
I think you should phone her if you haven't already. I am sure she cares and even though that time has past, there is still time for friendship. The pain doesn't go away, it only hides.
It appears to be about a man who has received a telephone call from an old flame called Caroline. His life has moved on (he's married, has kids etc) but he still remembers her and, partially, perhaps a song related to her. This call has unearthed a lot of emotions for him but ultimately he doesn't want any more contact from Caroline. It's a beautiful song.
@@tomdoesstuff1978 is it possible that she lost her wife in the context of the song and that Caroline is calling to offer condolences? She sings that she “loved” her wife, which would be a strange way to describe a current relationship
@@Carvaka I don't see that interpretation at all myself. The part you refer to seems to indicate the man moved on with his life after Caroline left, is much older now and reflecting on how he had children and loved the wife he went on to have. As the other user wrote, and I did not initially articulate very well myself, the song that goes "something, something...Caroline" within the actual song appears to be a metaphor for a half-forgotten, barely remembered relationship. Thank you for making me come back here and listen to this wonderful song again.
How dare you make any negative comments about Laura Marling. She is a goddess and makes heavenly music. I think that is the first negative remark I have ever ever read about LM. That is a criminal offence in my book
This song is a masterpiece.

What a sublime, folky voice.

I don’t like to compare, because I feel that Laura’s music is beyond compare, but I’m so pleased to hear Leonard Cohen’s influence through her music
I was thinking the exact same thing.

Nailed it
@@col2281 Hit the nail right on the head!!
This reminds of Martha by Tom Waits
This is so simple but so beautiful, the music, the voice, the melody. Just perfect
The whole album is brilliant; and this song is just perfection.
Very pleasing ; feels like a mix of 1st Cohen album and 1st and 2nd Simon & Garfunkel
This song fits so well thinking about old loves.

This new album is incredible.
Oh this is brilliant, but I would not expect anything less from Laura Marling ❤
Love this
Wow, brings back heartbreak and a place I could never go again with a person called Caroline 💔
This is such a great song. I honestly thought it was a cover of a Paul Simon song. High praise indeed.
Just discovered your music... Thank you, Laura!
Sigh, what a trip. So much love
We missed you
Ay, dios. I wasn't ready for this. Amazing! 😭
Mrs Laura deserves a Grammy award ❤❤
So beautiful x
Laura’s music always makes me feel every one of the 4,706 miles away from Eversley (and Yateley) from where I live now.
Makes me cry I don't know why
oh yes, the strings. I still hear the string in my manic and I when I'm quiet enough
this is perfection
Hermosa, maravillosa, bostin
beautiful music
Beautiful song
Music for my soul 💛

the strings, the strings
Beautiful as always

Te quiero Laurita
Wow. Artful folk.
I love your voice. Such a unique and genuine talent. I was just watching the music video for Night Terror (a Halloween favorite of mine)

Beautiful and devastating in equal measure.
Awesome
Wow!
I love you sm 😭
i like it ❤
thank you 😊
Wasn’t expecting this but I’m so glad you’ve popped back up in my feed. I’ve always loved your music. And this song is a fucking banger 🎉❤
This knocked me to the floor. Right off my feet. I'm going to sit here for a minute.
hermoso
💓💓💓
Wonderful,,,la la la la la la la
❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
❤
strong addition to the laura marling tradition of songs named after women
True😂
This song makes me think of Gilmore Girls interludes in the best way possible
do you remember at green man festival when it all went quiet and i shouted "Play Wonderwall" and you couldnt stop laughing?
against my will, this made me cry
This song hurts.
Wonderful song. I think it's fair to say that she was heavily influenced here by the beautiful Tom Waits song Martha released in 1973.
❤️💔

I am Caroline
Semper femina
Mash this up with “First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes. Anyone else?
I think you should phone her if you haven't already. I am sure she cares and even though that time has past, there is still time for friendship. The pain doesn't go away, it only hides.
Nice song but I cannot make sense of it, probably above my level.

This call has unearthed a lot of emotions for him but ultimately he doesn't want any more contact from Caroline. It's a beautiful song.
The song forgotten is like a metaphor for her as a person. The knowing of who she was has faded over time like a song, I think! It's beautiful.

Did she/you get the jab?
This is quite weak song compared to some of songs. Maybe its a grower🍄🍄🍄🙏🏼❤️🌻
Really? I find it beautiful, nostalgic and highly original. Lovely metaphor. It won't be forgotten.
Nice but boring. Kind of the vibes I'm getting across the board as I listen to the new record.

So listen to something else while I feel sorry for you.
beautiful song
