  • This is Frank Zappa and Senator John Danforth debating record labeling. Look at how stiff Frank appears wearing a bowtie and a suit.

We lost a national treasure in Frank Zappa. If there were a Mt. Rushmore for thought provoking, intelligent Americans, Frank should be up there, a creative genius and a thoughtful man willing to stand up for what is right.

He said just putting warning labels on these records was for taking over the world, which didnt happen. And he said that children need thtese violent lyrics to convey to them drugs are bad. Wasnt there a much more nicer way to convey thtat too them then violent lyrics containing messages of suicide, rape and masterbaition?

Why didn't Frank ask why the Congressman's suit isn't labeled with all of his corporate donators?

Bow tie or no bow tie Mr. Zappa looks fine to me; he even looks fine to me seating on a toilet seat better than the kings of England seating on their throne.

I love how fired up Frank is about this....especially after representative Danforth had his opening remarks and Maria Shriver had her say. She never interrupted the senator like she did Frank and he was getting more pissed as she did and pointed out when she messed up. Thanks Frank for taking a stand...nifty bow tie, too.

Frank Zappa is absolutely correct on this matter. If any adult or youngster needs a label to understand a song is preaching bad behavior then they are completely screwed up from a dysfunctional family life.

You wrote your comment a year ago, but I just now saw the video and your comment. I hear where you're coming from, but I would push it a step further. When I was 17, I bought Prince's "1999" album and in particular, "Let's Pretend We're Married" was my favorite song on the album for many years. In the song, he says, "I wanna f*ck the taste out of your mouth." I didn't have to wonder what he was talking about, of course, but where I would push it is in the swearing. If we had some kind of Universe where George Carlin's "7 Dirty Words" was not an issue. What is there were no such things as "bad words" or "dirty words?"

Like how she lies about what she said ("no, they hear it""). At 4:06 (before this), she says "see this" as Frank points out.

Mr Zappa, I have to give you credit. I would have kicked her teeth in.
Why would anyone want cersorship ? It's supposted to be a free country.
Thank you for protecting my right to choose.
Yes, my parents did tell me about sex. They told me sex is not "dirty."
"Nothing is profane to the eyes that truly see." DeCharin said that.

Notice how the debate is framed around the videos and not the lyrics. Which FZ calls out. Interesting as noted in other comments how Shriver interrupts FZ but not Danforth. Standard technique from journalists who know/learn not to challenge power.

Doesn't mean PORN to focus on a certain action without any abstraction - e.g. artistic. So does PORN ROCK not just say we focus on rock music at it's creational mechanics? .. such that just an unbiased and loose list would include anything in ROCK starting from Robert Johnson or beyond... Being about 11 I also listened to Stryper - which didn't annoy me from ROCK. Having you -the reader of this comment- being set towards that time: where is the difference between pure and porn? I am glad I can feel free in these days -- also thanks and due to the mind Frank Zappa and his crew! Thank you.

Look how screwed up our society is now just from this aired interview! Frank is right about what he was talking about and I’m sure he saw the writing on the wall with the industry. It’s all about money. Where’s the originality at now? Hidden. You have to go on sites like this to find anything worth a damn to listen to. The interviewers were right too, look at how bad the music and Hollyweird infiltrates the young minds? I wish Frank was alive to see what he would have to say about all this now. Would be very interesting.

@@LisaRichards_123 ha. Spoken like a true libtard! He would have. He hated the commercialization of music and it turned into the exact thing he warned about. You can’t make your own music, it’s all controlled if you sign your life away! And I don’t give a shit what you have to say! Fuck off!

I don’t know why our (beep’ing) government was (beep’ing) with our God(-beep) music any how? I’m one of those (beep’ards) who’d listen to that (beep’ing) type of mother(beep’ing) music and not a single God(-beep) (beep’ing) thing happened to me or effected my (beep)!!! I didn’t harm a God(-beep) (beep’ing) soul, nor do any harm to my (beep’ing) self!! Those mother(-beep’ers) in our mother(-beep’ing) government just wanted another God(beep) reason to spend more God(-beep) (beep’ing) tax dollars and (beep’ing) waste more God(-beep) (beep’ing) time so their retirement comes that much (beep’ing) sooner! You see me Uncle Sam, I’m good you mother(-beeper)!!
