- This is a long interview with Frank Zappa from October 26, 1981.
This interview only aired once as far as I know and ironically, Zappa was playing his last concerts at "The Palladium" in New York City.
Covered in this interview is Frank's negative experiences with the stage hands unions.
One of the reasons Frank never played the Palladium after November 1, 1981 was due to excessive stage hand union costs associated with doing concerts at that venue.
The first thing I noted while editing this video is how relaxed Frank is and how good Sandi Freeman was at asking Frank open ended questions and then allowing Frank to answer.
It is the only interview I have ever watched with Frank where he has a decent interviewer and he is relaxed enough to get out of his "Frank Zappa" persona. Too bad he did not do more interviews like this.
For such a long interview it has few commercial breaks.
This is a 5 part interview.
I am sorry for the poor video quality. But even "back in the day" when I was heavily into trading video NOBODY had a better quality copy of this interview.

Amen to what he's saying about the unions. David Gilmour had scheduled a concert in Montreal for his On An Island tour but had to cancel it due to disputes with the local unions.

A unique interview - the only one to feature the anecdote of his discovery of his younger brother's "kind-of" sexual abuse, which I think sheds light on certain controversial lyrics (circa 1976, get the drift?) and on the real reasons behind his own delinquent behavior (e.g the "explosions on parents' evening" incident - revenge on the teachers who wouldn't go to the defence his brother?)
I was a friend of Sandi Freeman's son when I was a kid. We used to burn models in the backyard while she drank vodka all day. Good times.
@kurtizzyflush Ooh. I'll have to go digging. It was reported heavily in our local media at the time. They'd originally announced Montreal, Toronto, NYC as the three spots for the tour, and then Montreal got cancelled.

Boo, Zappa, you are dead wrong about Unions and their benefits to society.
Interesting, Zappa type one each, Frank's so called music irritates my ears and annoys my mind. I would expect music to sooth my ears and instill motion in my soul. Frank developed a knack to compose sounds that only the mentally deranged can appreciate. His accomplishments demonstrate his evil master mind of the strange kind, a legend to lost souls with troubled minds.
***** Its like this, the people I knew that paid money for Zappa records back in the 1970's thought Zappa made their collection more valuable. I for one differ, I worked way to hard for my money to give it up to the likes of Zappa. Zappa worked hard to keep his recordings from getting played by radio stations so the only way to hear Zappa is to buy Zappa. To me that was Zappa's legacy, collecting money from record collectors. As far as music goes I call it like I hear it and Zappa is "NOISE POLLUTION."

Well, you cant appretuate his music beacuse of two reasons:
1. You doesnt know anything about rythm and complexity.
2. You dont like his kind of music.
You dont have to be a lost soul to like his music, you have to know something about music so that you can see the complexity and also sort the complex notes. You cant like something you cant hear and you cant hear his brilliance.
Go back to listening to something made for braindeads like House or Dubstep and leave the brilliance to the people who understands it.
