- Part 2 of Frank being interviewed by comedian David Brenner on his short lived talk show, "Nite Life", in the mid 1980's. Check out Uber-cool band leader, Billy Preston, of "Nothing From Nothing" and the Beatles' "Get Back" fame.
In this segment, Frank introduces his 2 oldest Moon Unit and Dweezil (18 and 16) who seem to be some of the most well adjusted children in show business, especially for the offspring of one of the most iconoclastic musical icons of the time. Notice how ariculate they are and their lively sense of humor. Frank was nothing if not a good, attentive, present parent.
man, look at the noses on these 2 Gentlemen; nearly identical. The Jew and the Italian are pretty close in size in the proboscus department.
Dweezil is an excellent Guitarist in his own right, and Moon is an outspoken political activist and comedian herself, and both are busy raising families of their own.
We miss Zappa, and while his kids haven't nessisarily risen to his lofty heights of avant garde musical expression, they all seem to be living very happy lives.
This interview is a tribute to his cleverness and grace.
You gotta love Frank and such sweet children. I think he was a great father. He was always anti drugs and never part of the "establishment". God rest his soul.
FRANK HAS DONE A GREAT JOB WITH EVERY ASPECT OF HIS LIFE AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED. IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE DIVE OF DIGGING ON THE NAMES OF HIS CHILDREN, YOU'RE PRETTY SICK. THEY ARE ALL BEACONS THAT WE NEED MORE OF, JUST NOT NOW~ ~ ~ ALWAYS. GENIUS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON THREAD IN THAT FAMILY THAT I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF LONG BEFORE MOON AND WHOEVER ELSE HAPPENED UPON THE DAY. FRANK WAS CHEATED BIG-TIME FOR BEING TO COOL AND TOO FAR AHEAD OF THE TIMES HE WAS IN. THE FEDS GET SCARED OF PEOPLE LIKE HIM, LENNON, DYLAN; YOU UNDERSTAND, SOMEBODY WHO USES A BIT MORE THAN I/10th OF 1% OF THAT GREY MATTER BETWEEN YOUR EARS. FRANK WAS A GENIUS AND HIS CHILDREN ARE GREAT INDIVIDUALS. YOU 2 SV.. HAVE A GREAT DAY BROTHER-IN-ROCK.
Jerry Cayton Thank you my friend. I can tell you are not a fan of today's music. Miss all the great oldies!
SV Wenger God rest his soul? Zappa always denied God.
bigjer Cayton They ain’t so sweet now. I think more will reveal itself in the coming years.
@@greglaprade7507 with all due respect, I think Frank was more about being anti-religious not anti-God. God's so-called representatives do such a horrible job at it that it only makes sense to be anti-religion but I like to think that he heard his God speaking to his heart before he died and he's with Him now.
Such a cool family chemistry. You can be sure they had a lot of hilarious times, and plenty of witty intelligent banter in the house those days.
R.I.P. Billy and Frank. Frank Zappa died 27 years ago today… I still miss him
David Brenner too.
@@stevenmckenzie2741 Always was such a funny man.🙂
Dweezil: "We make butter."
Frank: "We have a cottage industry."
Genius.
Love Frank Zappa. His opinions ring so true today in 2024…Thank you Frank. rest in peace.
Billy Preston on piano! RIP Billy
wow!! So nice to see Frank in such a happy mood through this whole thing!!
Agreed, see my comment at the top.
Love the Zappa family back then. Very bright children! Frank was the greatest, one of my main musical influences, and David Brenner was one of my favorites!
I adore Moon. Smart, really funny, and beautiful.
Imagine The Zappa’s as a reality show. Seems TV execs we’re on the cusp of this concept as they realized audiences enjoyed seeing Frank and his kids together
It would have been the only reality show where you wouldn’t feel dumber afterward for having watched it.
As a Veteran who swore an Oath to protect & defend the Constitution, I deeply appreciate Frank saying that it needs to be valued & protected. 🙏👊🇺🇸
Also, Frank wasn't a drug user, but 200 Motels is fascinating to watch under the influence of psilocybin. 🍄🚀🌌
Gosh, an interviewer that Frank seemed to like and Moon delighted on. I don't know who he is - I'm English, but cudos to him for succeeding where so many failed.
listen to Zappa plays Zappa...(I think he has a few vids out, this one was with former 'Mothers' guitarist Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio (former 'Mothers' Drummer and percussionist) Dweezil is a brilliant guitarist and musician... I have been a Zappa fan for decades and now have just discovered Dweezil has taken his fathers music to another level... he (Dweezil) would make his father proud! Thank you Dweezil, for keeping your fathers music alive.
Just watched that show from Seattle and WAY worth the watch !! INCREDIBLE!! Dweezil does his Father's music expertly and, IMHO, I believe "the Boy" plays Frank BETTER than Frank! Amazing!
Jeffery A. Hunt I don't quite think (IMO) that Dweezil plays as good as FZ, yet... but he is a great guitarist, I love Dweezil and listen to ZPZ often, he probably will be as good, if not better than Frank one day! :-))
Keith Hall I have no doubt that he will equal and surpass his Father, after all this was his teacher from the git, and the boy has got serious talent. I think he plays smoother than Frank, less sporadic and manic.
Jeffery A. Hunt Yes you are right! Dweezil does play smoother, but I love Franks sporadic and manic way of playing... I can hear FZ's 'signature' guitar style anywhere, Frank has the habit of writing a beautiful piece of music and then just 'throws a spanner' in there, just because he can, and understands music so well, the other thing is rock and roll in it's true form is 'raw' and a bit 'loose' sometimes, and that's what I like about 'rock and roll'... Although I love listening to bands like FZ and 'The Mothers' lately, because there are so many other instruments than the standard R&R band Bass, drums, guitarist and vocalist. but! I love all music!! :-)
Keith Hall Rock on, bro!
The 2 coolest of the Zappa kids.
He was such the coolest father ever.
I'm not sure about that given recent litigations between the siblings.
It's always cute, until money is involved...sigh...
In all reality, the only thing that makes a cool father is cool kids who have gratitude and appreciate that their father does the best he can.
How cool must it have been to have Frank Zappa as your father?! No time wasted going to church . . . a home life filled with magnificent music and cynicism regarding politics . . . man, what I would've given for that kind of upbringing!
I had a home life filled with magnificent music and cynicism regarding politics and a father who never went to church, and it was not with out its significant travails. It was not all milk and honey, peaches and cream. (My mother did attend church regularly and brought her children with her, but I obstinately stopped attending when I turned thirteen without reprisal.) I do remember once as a teenager when for some reason I got stuck at hope of an evening realizing to my rebellious dismay that my parents were actually smarter and more entertaining than most of my friends. Boy, that was a blow.
not so sweet now, thanks to Gail, Ahmet, and Diva.
?
Moon Zappa for president!
It's sweet seein frank with his kids!
thanks amigo for all the cool videos!
Frank Zappa's children are soO beautiful... specially Moon unit she is like a light house"
Back in the bronze age I actually got my dad to sit n listen to Zappa and the Mothers. He said, " I'm not sure about the music but he sure has an interesting mind." I was around 16 then n glad dad wasn't a total jerk. Actually he would listen to a fair amount of my music unlike his wife.
I always had a crush on Moon Zappa.
Lots of us did, and considering how she's aged, we still do. Look up some recent interviews she's gorgeous
@@303nitzubishi4 Yes, still very sexy.
Me too.
Had a picture of her in my junior high locker lol
Moon is so incredibly beautiful it's scary.
danke für dieses Video.
Love her laugh.......with leather.....
On the bus😜
In the tool shed
Don't you mean Lather? With an umlaut...(over the 'n').
Dweezil great guitar player
I miss you so much Frank i can only imagine how much your children miss you.
yes, billy preston :))
@solarwave
Yeah, a rare treat to see Frank in a good mood for a TV interview, especially right around this time. The Alan Thicke interview comes to mind.
moon is so cute man
+Juan P She's lucky she got her mom's looks. Her sister Diva got her dad's looks and no one is calling her cute.
Clutch Cargo It is always best to try to say nice things about people.. I think your mom didn't teach you that, but pass along.
Juan P I did, I said Moon was very attractive.
+Clutch Cargo she cute but nothing too really brag about....
Deidre MCCALLA I think she was nice. She never was a '10', but I'd say she was a step up from cute.
GORGEOUS KIDS
He said at one point that he strongly disliked both parties since they were basically the same. He considered running for President in 1988 under the Libertarian Party, but disagreed with a couple of things in their platform, which meant it would be difficult to win the nomination.
"Where you going? Who are you going with? What time will you be home? Otherwise, what they do out their is up to their own devices." My *exact* interrogation of my teens(!)...and they roll their eyes and huff like it's an excruciatingly painful divulgence. Suck it up, kiddo :)
MY TEENAGE SON EVER ROLLS HIS EYES OR TALKS BACK, HE LOST. THE CONVERSATION DOESN'T CONTINUE EITHER. EITHER USE THAT RESPECT OR GET THE HELL OUT. THERE COMES AN AGE/MATURITY THAT DISPLAYS ITSELF. IT'S JUST A NATURAL THING THAT YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT IF YOU ARE ON THE SAME 'VIBE LEVEL'. MY TEENAGE SON AND I HAVE THE BEST RELATIONSHIP I KNOW OF. TO ME, I TRY AND TREAT HIM AS THE MAN I KNOW HE SOMEDAY, WILL BE. WE NEVER DID THAT GOOOO GAAAAAAA GAME. WE ALWAYS HAD FUN TOO. THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE, SO THEY HAD TO BE GREAT FOR SON ALSO. MOST TEENS ARE FAMED FOR DISRESPECT THOUGH. HOPE IT WORKS FOR YA, DAD. ME. RESPECT OR REJECT... I LOVE BEING A SINGLE DAD OF A TEENAGE SON WHO HAS HAD NO MOTHER SINCE AGE 2. ALL IS WELL. HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND. HONORS ALL HIS LIFE. NOW A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL. ANOTHER FRANK. BEST OF LUCK DAD.
I like dweezils suit...
She is so pretty
david brenner had a talk show? love Frank and his kids 80's hair do's? decades happen! lol!
@MsBukaki True. Moon Unit is beautiful. Especially when she smiles. If I were in the same room I'd tell her every joke I knew & just to keep her smiling.
Moon's cute!
Frank was in a good mood.
Moon and Dweezils hair 😄😄😄 pure 1980s
"this is my dad frank zappa....this is my, dad, y'know"
Now the kids are suing each other..sad..
How things have changed.
Too bad about the Family squabbles over the Family Mistrust Fund......The bottom line ......Dweezil keeping the music alive and introducing it to new fans will only increase the trusts value to the family........Rock On Dweezil and Moon....
Frank spawned such beautiful children
You have to admit, Borat comes to mind if you didn't know who Frank Zappa was.
1986❤️
I watched this at my parents house years ago. My dad said of Ms. Moon "she's a pretty girl." He seemed amazed that this weird guy could father a good looking child.
...but she was very repressed. she wore clothes that covered every square inch of her, she would go to the beach and wear a tent. She was attractive but didn't want anyone to think so.
This was 5 years before Moon got here Hebrew nose reduced.
Yeah, thank you very much fellow youtuber!
I love this performance of his with the tie, so cool! a bit mean but man!
Now 29. ❤️💯
Moon was so cute
"psychotic environment" so true.
i know i love zappa
music concrete
ect...
yeah thanks.
Moon's a babe!
Agree.
Dweez was such a VH fan at that point, and he had personal lessons from Steve Vai,so he was busy..:)
Billy Preston wow
Moon's cute
Yo was that Billy Preston on Piano at the beginning? Surely looked like him
Not even close
RIP Frank
Le Cirque restaurant is still there in new york
Both of these guys have passed on.
80s indeed. Big hair.
yes i am a fan its musique concrete
Mr Frank Zappa did a statement about his political views.
wow, you're a regular intellectual powerhouse.
If I had that tie... o_o
I like the brown shoes.
Brown Shoes Don't Make It.
Help im a rock
Sick
Frank certainly understood politics.
Moon Zappa on life in 1986 S California: We do have the meanest police on the planet.
2021: Nothing's changed
Cry those liberal tears.
This host is a real drip
Wow when did David Brenner have a talk show? Is that Billy Preston on keyboards?
one season 86-87
Zappas. No apostrophe.
The coming together of big noses and big hair. I miss Frank and the 80's.
I love men with big nose ;)
lol Dweezil looks like Michel Cusson in his prime
frank zappa produces NOISE also
listen to
"We're Only in It for the Money"
@sallymick27 That would be a very hard song to dance too...
Seem like a nice family.
6:20 oh how things change.
is that billy preston on piano. because i dont know why he would want to be on a show with david brenner.
@TEMPmichaelhansen no, you're thinking of his brother, Amet.
it looks like Moon didn't listen enough Stravinsky, since she ended up marrying Matchbox 20 into the Zappa family1
Frank looks like hipster Borat.
Frank really was somebody. For funky junk guitar visit Dirty DOM Music ( not that rapper guy using my name ). Press the encircled D
Are all chicks named moon hot?
The thing is frank is so rich that he doesn't feel the pinch of socialism.
you should see interviews with Gail, she is amazing
i saw her on politically incorrect with one of her sons-hilarious.
they are laughing but not stoned
3:03 hilarious
30 years ago....man, have things gotten worse. Think life was bad under the rethuglicans back then, Frank? You're fortunate you didn't live to see how much worse and backwards this country has gotten....plus, your kids are divided due to your wife's stupid parceling out of "shares" of your estate. Very sad, indeed.
Amen.
if you have a permit to legally carry a firearm for protection, and a police officer draws a weapon on you for no reason...do you have a right to remove your firearm from concealment? I would want to protect myself if something like that ever happened..you never know what the police officer might do. I was just curious how that would work.
That apostrophe is bugging the hell out of me. It's 'Zappas'.
Yeah, well that’s the crux of the biscuit, isn’t it?
@@johnspooner1403 Down, Fido.
“Frank was nothing if not a good, attentive, present parent.” haha you mean for someone who wasn’t home 8 months a year, and then when he was home he slept all day and worked in the studio at night. Other than that, yeah.
Where's Diva? - She's missing in this.
Camera shy??
You can tell Frank still had a trickle of that Sicilian mentality in him
This host was a little bit better than the usual wise-asses Frank had to deal with on talk shows. But he was still one of those idiots who seemed to have difficulty understanding that someone can be both a creatively unusual artists, as well as a "normal" parent.
If I see one more interview where they ask Frank why he named his son Dweezil, I'm going to aaaaahhhh!!!
One of two things would have happened if I told them Frankie sent me, or three. One, I would have been asked what Dean was really like. Two, I would have gotten another tie. Or I would have been told to relax.
Think really hard about this comment.
he was a genius, though under educated in economics. even back in the '80's he could have availed himself w/ Friedman & Sowell. His younger kids & widow trashed his estate/trust
Karl Marx is better
@@Vincent-fo7xp have u even listened to the man? have u red marx? ahahaha
hahahah, Friedman, sure xD
He would be swearing in his grave had he known the state of US politics today !
