it is almost impossible to compare players of today and then, now football is more technical and physical in those times it was more basic. As I was born in 2001, I wasn't granted the privelege of watching this legend play. This was before diving was popular, and this was the Era where legitimate soccer took off, thanks to Pele. People who didn't know a thing about soccer knew who Pele was, he was that great. Fortunately, I have youtube as an outlet to watch this man play. Thanks Pele for revolutionizing soccer and making it truly a world wide sport.

People are saying that the defenders that Pelé played against are rubbish are seriously forgetting the calibre of players back in that era: Beckenbauer, Moore, Facchetti, Nilton Santos just to name a few. The problem with comparisons is: there are no comparisons. What was unique about Pelé was his ability of doing absurdly and absolutely every kind of goal possible and play in every style imaginable. No youtube clip will capture that, he made more than 1000 goals. He would do whatever the fuck he wanted with the ball and the opponent, constantly, frequently, every single match, with no breaks. He had no mercy. Opponents say on their biographies they were actually genuinely scared from Pelé. So when you come with Messi, Pelé would play like him on Fridays when he felt like. On a side note, some may find this irrelevant to the argument, I dont think we'll ever see a player like Messi again in our lifetime. The unique dribbling, passing technique, through balls, nutmegs (jesus christ, he gets like 10 a game). On another side note, I believe that we will see another player similar to Ronaldo very soon. Athletes are getting better every day, someone will eventually match his abilities. But speaking relatively to the time he plays in, he's an absolute physical specimen, the perfect athlete for soccer, he possesses every single physical trait a soccer player strives for. speed, jumping, power. He can do it all, the most complete soccer player probably in history. Theyre both so damn good. Have you ever played with one of these balls and saw the differences with the new ones? Shoes.. can't make a big difference also. The only thing they had to deal with is more tackles , but in the case of Messi , he would already be 5 meters away from the defender if he tried to tackle him. Football was easier back then.

The defense seems nothing compared today in this video. Pele had it in easy mode. Wouldn't cope against today's defense which much higher quality. Pele was the greatest player of his era, but then again the competition wasn't nearly as high as today - it was much easier to be above everyone else like that.
My friend, Pele's time's soccer balls were nothing compared to today's balls. At that time, Pele didn't have easy Ad1das balls to kick and score almost 1300 goals! They were massive, hard to control, they traveled way slower than today's balls. Saying that defense seems nothing compared to today's is a crap argument! So the same way we can also argue that offense used to be nothing at Pele's time compared to today. Besides, physiotherapy, health care in general, even soccer shoes were nothing compared to today's! Messi will never have Pele's achievements at international level but he's clearly a better player. Just go and compare the two, the difference in pace of the game now and the opposition he faces. His dribbling is far, far above Pele's. So much more fluidity and control at full speed. Then there is his passing. Pele had very good vision too, that is clear, but Messi has far less thinking time than Pele. Messi's speed of thought is just on another level. Maradona raised the bar for football after Pele, and now Messi has taken it on another step. Just because he did not win the world cup, that does not mean Messi can't be seen as better. The 58 world cup was a world away from the standard it is now. They were amateurs in comparison with teams now, especially when looking at that Swedish team in the final. As for 1970, Pele played in the best national team around at the time by a mile. Put Messi in that side and he would do likewise. As I was born in 2001, I wasn't granted the privelege of watching this legend play. This was before diving was popular, and this was the Era where legitimate soccer took off, thanks to Pele. People who didn't know a thing about soccer knew who Pele was, he was that great. Fortunately, I have youtube as an outlet to watch this man play. The problem with comparisons is: there are no comparisons. What was unique about Pelé was his ability of doing absurdly and absolutely every kind of goal possible and play in every style imaginable. No youtube clip will capture that, he made more than 1000 goals. He would do whatever the fuck he wanted with the ball and the opponent, constantly, frequently, every single match, with no breaks. He had no mercy. Opponents say on their biographies they were actually genuinely scared from Pelé. So when you come with Messi, Pelé would play like him on Fridays when he felt like. On odd weekends he would play like Ronaldo or Ronaldinho, when he was really bored he would play like Maradona.

You cannot compare Messi & Pelé. You just can't. Because without Pelé, modern football would be nothing. Messi would be nothing if football wasn't revolutionized. Also, Pelé didn't have any sort of official trainer. His trainer was himself. Football was way different in the 1960s. If Pelé was raised up in the modern days, than I guarantee that he will play better because he would have more facilities, he would have more training and he would be better. Face it. We are so lucky to be watching Lionel Messi play, We are so lucky to be watching Cristiano Ronaldo play, most of us are unlucky to not be able to see Pele play. Yes, nowadays, if you put Pele on the field, id imagine he would have a much harder time being as good as he was back then, he would probably do well, hes a natural goal scorer, but its a different game, there are quicker defenders and strong athletes now. He was the greatest of his time, no doubt, no argument, he was AS GOOD AS HE NEEDED TO BE. Like now, Messi and Ronaldo are as GOOD AS THEY NEED TO BE to be considered the best in the world.
On a side note, some may find this irrelevant to the argument, I dont think we'll ever see a player like Messi again in our lifetime. The unique dribbling, passing technique, through balls, nutmegs (jesus christ, he gets like 10 a game).
On another side note, I believe that we will see another player similar to Ronaldo very soon. Athletes are getting better every day, someone will eventually match his abilities. But speaking relatively to the time he plays in, he's an absolute physical specimen, the perfect athlete for soccer, he possesses every single physical trait a soccer player strives for. speed, jumping, power. He can do it all, the most complete soccer player probably in history.

The defense seems nothing compared today in this video. Pele had it in easy mode. Wouldn't cope against today's defense which much higher quality. My friend, Pele's time's soccer balls were nothing compared to today's balls. At that time, Pele didn't have easy Ad1das balls to kick and score almost 1300 goals! They were massive, hard to control, they traveled way slower than today's balls. Saying that defense seems nothing compared to today's is a crap argument! So the same way we can also argue that offense used to be nothing at Pele's time compared to today. Besides, physiotherapy, health care in general, even soccer shoes were nothing compared to today's! The same way Pele 'wouldn't cope against today's defence', maybe Messi wouldn't even like soccer if he was born at Pele's time. Being a soccer player at that time was WAAAAY tougher than today! Messi will never have Pele's achievements at international level but he's clearly a better player. Just go and compare the two, the difference in pace of the game now and the opposition he faces. His dribbling is far, far above Pele's. So much more fluidity and control at full speed. Then there is his passing. Pele had very good vision too, that is clear, but Messi has far less thinking time than Pele. Messi's speed of thought is just on another level. Maradona raised the bar for football after Pele, and now Messi has taken it on another step.
Just because he did not win the world cup, that does not mean Messi can't be seen as better. The 58 world cup was a world away from the standard it is now. They were amateurs in comparison with teams now, especially when looking at that Swedish team in the final. As for 1970, Pele played in the best national team around at the time by a mile. Put Messi in that side and he would do likewise. Messi for me is the best ever and his longevity week in week out speaks for itself. Messi came so close anyway, carrying Argentina for four games in a row, playing well against Belgium too. No player did it in every single game at a world cup. And lets be realistic, Gotze scored the winner in the final, yet this is a player who will never be close to one of the best ever in all likelihood. It just shows one game no matter how big does not define a career. The key is week in week out to becoming an all time great.

You should look at the facts before making such an inaccurate statement.As for your second bit, you said those players were great at every tournament? You seem to forget about Ronaldinho in his prime flopping at the 2006 world cup... He didn't even do much when they won it in 2002, as it was mainly all about R9 and Rivaldo. Also, whilst R9 was great, he never won a CL, so clearly did not replicate his performances for Brazil to Madrid. Van Basten also did not perform at every international tournament, and was nowhere near Messi's level as a player, same for Romario. Zidane also was inconsistent at club level. Messi has shown more consistency than all of those players week in week out.

Cruyff was the master of 74 WC, the leader of Netherlands and Ajax. Then he moved to Barcelona, winning La Liga on his first season, bringing back the title after FOURTEEN years. Then, after three years practically retired, he go back to Ajax and won 2 other leagues. And, finally, with 37 years old, he won another league, again as best player, but this time by Feyenoord, ending the clubs TEN YEARS gap.

Its really hard to compare what Messi did and do for his club with what other players did. Messi grew up on Barcelona surrounded by the best players in the world. When he came up the team was already the best, Ronaldinho ,Deco, Etoo were destroying everyone. Barcelona is one million years ahead the others. They raped Madrid without Messi.
What can i say for sure is: Messi plays one way for Barcelona and another way for Argentina. This make me think what he would do if he grew up in a weaker club

What do you expect? None of Argentinas attackers perform, its only Messi. He is basically their midfield and attack. Without Messi, I doubt they would have went out of the group in 2014. That team had a really shit attack and was carried by Messi and the defence. Ronaldo 2002 wasnt any better than Messi 2014, as he scored lots of tap-ins in that tournament, so nothing special yet he gets praised, because his teammates were actually useful compared to the crap Messi plays with. And he won the WC for that reason unlike Messi.
The fact that Messi lead Barca in 2014/2015 to the treble, looking a class above world class players like Neymar and Suarez should give you a hint about his ability.

Ever heard of football? It's a team sport, not a individual sport. Pele won the world cups with his team, not by himself. I won't deny pele was great, but players like messi and Maradona are better. Pele will always be a legend but he is overrated.

zsivaz Yes I agree, Pele didn't have that oppurtunirty as you are aware he played in an era when all the best players played in Brazil, (shown by 66 of 66 World Cup players from the WC Team destroying Europe all played in Brazil). As to this day time machines aren't possible, but Pele would still have destroyed the tough Italian Defenders of the 80's as he did throughout his career, including destroying the Tough Italian defence of 1970, and the best teams in Europe.
