I’ve wanted to open an OG Team Rocket pack since getting back into the hobby earlier this year. That alone has made me realize there is value in holding sealed product long term, because there are millions of nostalgic fans on the spectrum just like me!
What i love about this channel is your analytical side of explaining the economy of Pokemon cards. I have never bought a Pokemon card, and have no intention of ever investing. But what I do invest in is stocks. And there's so much cross over between this and investing in equities. You explain the Pokemon market, the economics of the system, the terminology and ideas mirrored in actual financial markets, and how psychology and emotion have such a big factor. I find it honestly fascinating, which is why I love this channel.
Streaming culture is a new phenomenon that goes through supply and increase demand from said culture. Perfect firestorm for what the hobby is experiencing right now
I’m also a grown as man with expendable income. If I want a card and it cost whatever I can afford to buy people complaining don’t have the expendable income but one day they will do the same thing as long as capitalism exists.
Assuming they aren’t disabled physically or mentally to the point it ensures they can never earn as much as the average person. I guess fuck those people 🤷♂️
If all things hit zero, we will simply try to complete our collection in ways we never could when things were expensive. We will open bucket loads, play the game with cards we never could afford, and relive the glory days surrounded by our collection. We wouldn't sell, we would enjoy. It's hard to judge what makes people sell because it's so different for everyone. All we know is we like this hobby, and the prices move UP and DOWN aggressively all the time for good reason or no reason at all. It doesn't change anything, it just makes it exciting. We came back into the hobby a little over a year ago. We acted like wall flies, did our homework, and learned so much observing both pokemon and the people buying it. People move the market, not pokemon. They supply the cards, we supply the demand. Understanding that was huge for us.
People would rather buy $1,000 of packs, than buy the $20 card they want to pull. That’s why demand is so high. I’ve spent thousands on this hobby so I know better.
For the first time in my experience, I went to my GameStop and they had no loose packs of Pokémon cards. They had a few weak collection boxes, but every set was sold out if I wanted to buy a couple packs for my son.
Gamestop has been pretty much sold out of pokemon cards other than lingering new bs or random old packs like silver tempest which is always cool to see. Genuinely wish they restocked like target did. Even if its still not enough it would be awesome.
Yes. It has changed. Thing is, i am so sure, that you will be able to get some packs somewhere. While the pokemon hype, ppl where like: "oh, i wanna join to.. where do i get cards from a game/series??? AH right, at gamestop!" But Pokemon cards are toys from if not the biggest frenchise, so they get shipped to a lot of others stores to. Even grocery stores with just a small "toy section"😅 i hope u get what i mean.... nowadays you have almost to be clever to get cards:) Good luck!
So many great points in this video. I used to be pretty pessimistic about modern and only had maybe 10-20% of my collection as post XY. Thought the exact thing you mentioned about the POP. But there really just is that much demand from breakers and collectors nowadays that it all sustains. So I’ve moved to a much larger position into modern and it’s been working wonders this last year.
Not only that but never before have we have a time when you can instantly hop online and buy a box and have it ripped right then and there. The high of gambling alone will keep this insanity going.
I attended the Front Row card show yesterday in Phoenix, and the turnout was incredible. Pokémon dominated the tables, creating a buzzing atmosphere. It was astonishing to see $100 bills changing hands so frequently! The Pokémon card collecting scene is truly thriving right now. Many are speculating about when this bull market might come to a close, but I personally believe the market remains robust and vibrant.
On the housing thing... Properties getting bought up is part of the problem. They are snatched up quickly by investors and the folks who are either renting or looking to buy their first place are priced out. To reference the beginning of the video, where's your hypothetical calculator on who's buying the property? I get your point Alex, but that was a terrible analogy. Homeowner by the way. It's interesting to watch your content evolve over the years. Thanks for the info.
People who have a house don’t care. It’s the I have mine so why can’t you get yours mentality. I am very lucky/privileged to have a home (no job though 😭) but I do feel bad for everyone else who don’t have the energy/mindset/ability/resources/luck/privilege/able-body. This country sucks
Sold one of my Fusion strikes boosters (sell some keep some) and the prices kept changing and going up I almost wanted to change my mind 😂 he wanted my obf pc etb for $200 right then and I said nah I need $220 b/c market just hit $230 and counting. This market is really moving rn and I’m here for it! 💰🤓
I agree with you about the Umbreon availability in PSA 10. That card i so popular that everyone is grading it. 14000 is an incredible low availability for how many Americans there are. To me this means there is a similar amount of the other ultra rare cards. The 1952 Topps Micky Mantle card used to be so common and the set was so over printed that they where selling 1952 cards in 1960 in Canada! The 1952 set was so overprinted that the rest of the inventory was thrown out! Guys the most valuable baseball card in existence was once a throw away card from a over printed set!
The Unbreon V max is kinda like the sports car from the sword and shield era, you dont need one but everyone wants one, i think it will always be popular i think it deserves to be at the price its at, might not always stay at the price it is, but if more people want it, there is no reason it can not hit even go up more. i buy and sell and i still want this card for my pc to wrap up Sword and shield.
Alex may not be a financial advisor but I've been for a while and he is very intelligent, business savvy, and understands his markets. It's all relative
Great video sir! I’m now a daily consumer of your content! Two things from a perspective of a school counselor that’s also an avid sports and Pokemon card collectors. 1. People do have real issues saying that two phrases “thank you” and “my bad” or “ my fault.” 2. The most sane folks are the ones that can admit they are a little cray cray from time to time 😂 thank you again for the content sir!
Couldn't agree more with the statement about Pokémon being smart. I think they learned their lesson with printing to demand with sets like Vivid Voltage. I wonder if we will see sets printed like that in the future. Crown Zenith was the last set they printed into the ground and I think they knew it could take it.
This is why I collect and invest in things I love. Yeah I buy sealed and the hit cards. I speculate some cards and sets. But I love doing it. Getting those specific cards and feeling good. If you enjoy it, then the loses you take don’t feel that bad
I made the mistake of underestimating the impact and amount of people opening packs to chase a card, to gamble, and getting a dopamine hit. Also, it seems like the thousands of dollars I spend a year for just collecting in this hobby is quite pathetic. Guess there is a lot of people in this hobby with more disposable income than me. That or credit cards. I thought I was crazy spending so money on Pokémon. Turns out I'm just another little Timmy
Isn’t apartments selling out instantly in a “fly over” state evidence that the housing market might be pretty tight? The housing market is actually pretty similar to Pokémon in terms of supply and demand IMO.
I paid for a Umbreon bgs 10 $2.4k and it’s already surpassed 3.6k insane gains in less than two months. I’m glad I didn’t hesitate and I’m holding it for the long term
I watched one of your videos earlier this year maybe february? You were talking about evolving skies and i listened. Purchased 2 booster boxes for about 365 each after i seen the video, now up over double on each! Thanks !!! Not to mention my fusion strike lost origin boosters 🤑
Currently I’m just trying to overspend on sealed to invest because I’m worried it’s going to balloon lol Thanks for the great content totally agree with pretty much everything!! Although I wouldn’t put investors and scalpers in the same boat (unless you are fighting people in the stores.) You mentioned people being mad at investors. Investors provide a service down the road for collectors to open sets they have nostalgia for or to chase a favorite card typically scalpers are hoarding what they perceive as scarce to make a quick buck at other’s expense. God bless you and the family!!!
I can tell you your formula works and has helped me. I remember those days. People saying modern wasn't going to go up. I'm up very nicely. Telling people now is the perfect time to buy. When it was down. No complaints from me. Thanks
Collectors dont understand that there's an investment angle to collecting pokemon. They simply don't know how to ADAPT to this new wave of investors/hobbists entering the scene and rather complain that something is "wrong" sorry bros, wake up. some of us like to collect and know how to invest in stocks so can approach the hobby on all levels. If you don't find fun in all this, then youre just a child
I personally will wait until my team up boxes are at 10k and my evolving skies are at 6k before I even consider selling. People don't realize they reason they have to change the ratio at which you get hits is because the demand is constantly changing and so the supply has to change to meet it and that changes ratio of how often you get hits. if the ratio was the same as 1999 then we would be getting the biggest hits in every 2 boxes and that would tank the secondary market
Only people that sound scared of a crash are people who are the following: -over leveraged -have little to no liquid cash on hand to buy the dip -scalpers who impulsively bought prismatic at $80 and surging at $200 😂😂😂 I’m waiting for the bubble to pop so I can buy a bubble mew at under $100 if it gets that bad. Better to be ready then regretful
Alex, those that call you an 'idiot' are idiots themselves and won't go away, unfortunately. We just have to learn to ignore their bullshit comments because they're nothing but broke keyboard warriors. Keep up the great content.🔥 #hatersgunnahate
You have grown on me. When I started watching I was neutral about you but I've come to enjoy your channel. I think you offer great insight. You definitely aren't dumb like some say in the comments. I'm a collector first, investor second. Thanks for the pov and keep up the work dude
You forgot one option; if everything goes to zero and you´re all in, you at least (maybe) have an awesome last week on this earth. Don´t fail to appreciate that. But yeah, if Pokémon goes to zero that probably says a lot about the state of the world. Let´s just hope it does not.
As a newer collector/investor (circa 2022) I try to invest in sealed product but collect “trophies” I’ve got a psa 10 moonbreon that I don’t envision selling anytime soon but cases and boxes I’ll sell in 2-5 years
Dude I live in Charlotte NC and we are a pretty big city and we are always filling up new construction. I’m in the HVAC new construction and I see it everyday
Hey Alex, is it worth picking up a 2022 trainer toolkit? Pack selection seems to be x2 Astral radiance x1 Brilliant stars and an Evolving skies. Here in the UK it's priced at £29.99.
Don't see anyone denying that there is incredibly high demand right now. What do you think happens to the value of high pop modern cards when Pokemon goes through a period of decreased demand? Also, what happens when something new eclipses the hype of SW/SH sets? I would argue that S/V hasn't received nearly the same interest, which has led collectors to remain focused on SW/SH. There's no doubt this has contributed to the continued gains for sets like evo skys.
Same thing that happened in 2022. Period of a downturn and then stagnation until the next run. Most cards and boxes will set a higher low than before the run and set new highs on the next run.
Im not wrong here that often, but i miss things often. For instance, i didnt see illustration rare 10s hitting close to 1k. Espically when the SWSH ones, which had texture and were better, never got close to that. Those weird curveballs in the hobby are what keep things fun and intresting to engage with
Pokemon was smart to short print surging spark. Making everything else go up in price will bring more people to pokemons website. They love to sell at MSRP. Cause that is how they make the most money.
question: if boxes goes up in price its because cards goes up in price and people want to gamble to hit them. Hence why dont we just invest in the big chases and have a bigger roi? I mean moonbreon is up more % than the evolving skies booster box. So i guess my question is "why do we buy sealed products instead of just buying the big chases if price correlates but cards have a bigger % in upside?"
great video Alex, one thing i was thinking this morning about this upcoming "crash" is what role distributors play in this, they can somewhat set the market, LGS will have to stop ordering before distributors stop trying to get market value, its gonna be a long slow down and less a crash in my opinion, but it aint happening probably until base set of the next era IMO
It might be irrelevant to you how much they are printing, but if its discovered they are printing way more it could cause the hoarders and scalpers to panic sell and flood the market causing a crash.
Hey @NostalgiaNomics, I have a quick question: Should I keep my Twilight Masquerade Booster Box or sell it? What is your prediction for Twilight in the new year?
He answers this hypothetical question in almost every video. It all comes down to what is your expectations and what time frame are you working with? Only you can answer those questions. If you think that you can sell that and use the funds to move it into something else that you need or that you think will perform better, then do it. If you're trying to maximize your value and you're fine doing long-term stuff, just hold it.
Are you selling for a purpose like to earn a bit extra money for something upcoming. If ur an investor, Hold on to it for a few years and let it grow in value on its own. Theres no need to sell with investments if u dont need to
If you aren't wanting to hold it for 5-10 YEARS then just sell it. The set Just came out and it won't make any real moves until it's completely out of print. It's not worth waiting over a year just to make $25
Always loved your channel Alex. Always wise words from a wise man. Pokemon for life. It's like artwork now. Pokemon is a household name. And it's here to stay. Be scared people. Fear will make you miss out on life's best investments
I'm curious why you talk about everyone calling you an idiot, dumb, etc... you harp on that a lot. I'm sifting through your comments and I'm not finding much if any? You would think the majority of people or a decent % of people are flaming you, but I'm assuming maybe less than 1% of the comments are doing so. Maybe focus more on positivity rather than spend a lot of your time talking about the flamers that I and a lot of people aren't seeing?
Hey Alex, I want to buy the 9 cards of the starter of 151. Do you think should I wait the reprint of the set or it’s better to buy them now as they could go up in value with this crazy market ?
I still remember that live stream u did with squeaks, swammi and someone else and they were all hating on u for saying modern investing is the way to go. I would love for you guys all to do it again and see what they have to say now that we have hind sight.
Two generations of people, Gen Z and Millennials, will be demand. On top of that, Millennials have disposable income and have the ability to buy a shit ton of cards. If the financial markets rip next year and inflation picks back up, pokemon cards will rip again.
I hear you alex, but Pop reports are fucked dude. Psa itself as a company if you understand their history is shaky at best. Thats why lots of other companies started their own grading service. Its a bit shady. I can guarantee this. The landscape of grading will be completely different in 20 years. At a minimum, PSA needs to have a premium version of their 10 or they will eventually lose to bgs in the mint card era.
@@Mndudecollects potentially both. my speculation is that psa was king in the era where few protected cards. In the modern era there is a much higher population of good condition pokemon cards to include the rarer ones like pikachu and moonbreon. The bgs black label is the new creme de la creme of perfection in cards. If psa doesnt try to compete with that i think they could get passed up in the future as this generation of card collectors take better care of cards. Imagine a world where the tides change slightly and psa 10 collectors start cracking slabs and sending to bgs to increase card value. At a certain point people always gravitate towards the higher end stuff.
Hey Alex, I have a question the may be a little far fetched, by your estimation, how many active Pokémon collectors are there? Ten of thousands, hundreds of thousands? Or even over 1 million, of course, I am saying worldwide.
Yall know who be on these Whatnot streams buying these pokemon rips as well? Spors betting addicts. These fiends been born since Sports betting went digital and they’re looking for different avenues to get high daily.
Its similar to selling weed. Most of your buyers are not going to be spending a thousand dollars for bulk. They want to spend 20.00 to 200.00 for a couple quick hits. Those are most of the pokemon buyers.
The cards having value is great for the hobby. U want your cards to have value. Also I never hear any of u UA-camrs talk about inflation. This is huge reason for prices. The market was behind with prices
I went to a card show and was not able to move a premium, highly sought after, presumably easy to sell and part out for increased liquidity, at a CARD SHOW. The prices you see in online marketplaces is not the value. Once you factor online fees, shipping, etc, you start to realize the gains for the effort are there, but not better at ALL than other markets
Okay, but did you list it on fb groups, marketplace, or Craigslist? You went to one single location in the hopes of selling something (when most people go to a card show for something/vendors in particular) - vs increasing your chances of selling in many other ways, while still not paying for online fees. Don’t discourage everyone else because you lucked out at one card show trying to sell something no one particularly asked for.
You could have a 4 cases of Evolving skies and it still wouldn't sell if you were asking for full market value. If I wanted to buy it for sticker price I'd do it on Tcg-player where I have store credit to cut the costs.

Alex, those that call you an 'idiot' are idiots themselves and won't go away, unfortunately. We just have to learn to ignore their bullshit comments because they're nothing but broke keyboard warriors. Keep up the great content.🔥 #hatersgunnahate
Ever since that charizard sold for half a million and covid is why things are what they are
You have grown on me.
If the price point makes sense for what packs you get then it makes sense. I just don't know anything about product prices outside of the US market..
Just got back into pcg the past month and this was a dope video for me at this stage
Those weird curveballs in the hobby are what keep things fun and intresting to engage with
Go back to the 1999 when it all started for most us
Pokemon was smart to short print surging spark.
It doesn't always work like that lol. Go look at sun & Moon and xy cards vs boxes.
@@NostalgiaNomics oh okay, thanks
great video Alex, one thing i was thinking this morning about this upcoming "crash" is what role distributors play in this, they can somewhat set the market, LGS will have to stop ordering before distributors stop trying to get market value, its gonna be a long slow down and less a crash in my opinion, but it aint happening probably until base set of the next era IMO
Got a beer and some popcorn, time to watch.
Theres no need to sell with investments if u dont need to
Fuck it hold on to it. Let it sit an get happy
If you aren't wanting to hold it for 5-10 YEARS then just sell it.
The set Just came out and it won't make any real moves until it's completely out of print.
It's not worth waiting over a year just to make $25
acting like you will become a millionaire with Pokemon cards is funny
Alex is not speaking rocket science people
Always loved your channel Alex. Always wise words from a wise man. Pokemon for life. It's like artwork now. Pokemon is a household name. And it's here to stay. Be scared people. Fear will make you miss out on life's best investments
Any good app or site to see what cards or sealed products have been moving up or down?
I have 2 of the giratina and got both when is was low it is almost a 200$ card now. Should I sell one? Sell both? I’m thinking sell one keep one
Paldea evolved second box to hit 200? Yeah yeah? Love the video, fam.
🤷♂️
I got at least a booster box a month. My dad loved me very much and my mom even more. I was kid whale. I just wish I took care of them lol
I still remember that live stream u did with squeaks, swammi and someone else and they were all hating on u for saying modern investing is the way to go. I would love for you guys all to do it again and see what they have to say now that we have hind sight.
Haha Good Times
Two generations of people, Gen Z and Millennials, will be demand. On top of that, Millennials have disposable income and have the ability to buy a shit ton of cards. If the financial markets rip next year and inflation picks back up, pokemon cards will rip again.
Hell yeah almost a half hour video while playing cod 🎉🎉🎉
Every time I watch your videos I get the urge buy more Pokemon
Remember a couple of years ago Alex when everyone laughed at swsh booster boxes and alts 🎉 uh oh
Folks! We all have opinions. Some just refuse to have an open mind.
Alex, As always, thanks for another insightful video!
Lose to BGS in single card value or lose to BGS as a company? PSA grades like 20x the amount of cards as BGS so I don’t think the latter is happening
@@medcardman I don’t see it happening. BGS can’t even keep up with CGC submission numbers.
Same with Van Gogh Pikachu. 30k pop barely any raws for sale
You're right , thanks to be honest❤
Demand is temporary and not a constant. "Its simple economics"
It seems that the value of these collectibles is somewhat tied to the value of crypto and other assets

Timmy here. Pokemon is a big money waste!
@ could be. It’s just cardboard. Just like the Michael Jordan RC. Some expensive cardboard lmaooo

was cookin up some meals while listening to this vid. love the content keep it up
We were/are wrong about all the metazoo grifters transferring back into pokemans!!!
Folks!! Let’s have a great 2025!
I like to admit when I am wrong personally
Quite funny I've been here since you had arround 1k followers. I just wanna tahnk you for your content and investment advices
Really appreciate that. Thanks for sticking around
I need more market rants from Alex.
@10:25 You say they have no idea of knowing the past price. But the past price is msrp technically just saying.
Its similar to selling weed. Most of your buyers are not going to be spending a thousand dollars for bulk. They want to spend 20.00 to 200.00 for a couple quick hits. Those are most of the pokemon buyers.
Booster boxes = turkey bags, sleeved packs = dime bags. You get it. From slanging packs to slanging packs.
You were asking for too much.
Been having zero issues moving product, never had more people reach out to me than in the last few months.
You were probably asking for market value.
Everything moves at around 80%
You could have a 4 cases of Evolving skies and it still wouldn't sell if you were asking for full market value.
If I wanted to buy it for sticker price I'd do it on Tcg-player where I have store credit to cut the costs.
In Alex we trust !!!!
I think the fact someone is not able to add demand into the "equation" doesn't imply it cannot be measured:)
I know what your saying. Just trying to find the good deals.
I’m getting laughed at for buying Stella crown PC ETBs, let’s see who’s laughing in 5 years 😂
Put a Gen 1 Pokemon on a BB and it's always going to sell.
