Remember when the PS3 was first released, Sony was hit with a lawsuit from a company stating that the rumble mechanism was their creation; not Sony's. The lawsuit claimed that Sony was using the rumble feature without compensating the company. Thus, the 1st round of PS3 controllers only had SixAxis controls and NO rumble feature. A few months later, the lawsuit was settled and Sony released the PS3 controller with SixAxis & rumble feature. All that said, I wonder if Sony was still making PS2 controllers at the time and had to remove the rumble feature in them?
I remember the lawsuit, but I am thinking there may have been another thing with the PS2. Not everyone liked the rumble feature when it came out - I was one of those, and actually looked for controllers that did NOT have the rumble feature. Nowadays, it doesn't bother me, but some of those early rumble features were just poorly implemented by games, and I would have controllers shake out of my hands sometimes. The rumble feature added to the cost. I remember there being 3rd parties that offered controllers without the rumble feature for people like me, which cut down on the price of the controlers, but I cannot remember if Sony did or not. I do remember taking apart a Playstation controller before to fix it and it looking exactly like that, with no rumble packs, but I don't remember which system that was, but I am guessing it was a PS2 Slim because I remember picking up Kingdom Hearts 2 day one and I seem to recall having issues with my PS2 controller buttons being mushy, and I just spent all my money on the game and didn't have any money to replace the controller. So yeah, I don't recall the exact details, but that controller and its innards look very familar to me.

Yes, there was an Official PS2 Controller without Dualshock capabilities around 2008 (from my research) and it didn't have rumble for the reason that Sony had to temporarily stock stores with tweaked controllers to dodge licence fees when it comes to vibration but swiftly got the licence for vibration back so they could continue the manufacturing process for Dualshock 2 controllers.
Theyve probably started watching for Shawn's orders now. The first couple videos were grab bags, but the working recent refurb ps2? The cherry n64 controller? His lucks not THAT good lol
Sony made those cheap controllers as an alternative to the Dual Shock ones. They are quite common and sold for like $25 back in the day vs the $40 Dual Shock controllers. Not sure how youve not seen one before.
@@cookingsauce8274 Exactly, how many times has he stated that he used to repair consoles and handhelds. And given how he knows so much about certain repairs on certain systems it's believable.
From what I remember, there was an official version of the PSOne Analog controller that didn't have haptics. They were fairly quickly superceded by the DualShock1.0 controller and then later DualShock2.0 on the PS2, which wasn't all that much different in terms of design.
The PS2 controller is legit. They were cheaper because they were without the rumble. A lot of people, myself included, never liked the rumble so that was a good alternative to save some cash and have a nice legit controller.
And even the difference in weight when you play the version without rumble is so lightweight more you play with it more you appreciate how lightweight it is
Careful with buying the controllers from the online store especially. I have taken fakes in to the store to see if they would take them and they will. I have also received fakes from the warehouse. When I returned the fake in store and explained why it was fake, they put it on the shelf to sell. Someone else bought the fake dualshock 4 and ended up returning it because it did not work. The warehouse quality control is pretty poor...
PS2 will forever be my favorite console. My original fat version lasted 14 years before it gave in I bought a silver slim to replace it. I have my original standing on a top wall shelf by itself. I remember when it came out thinking how cutting edge the DVD player on it was. All the great games it had. Never had as much fun on any console as the PS2. And I don't think I ever will.
Never thought of that, though it makes sense since I bought a used slim PS3 from an owner that said it was mainly used to play blu-ray movies. And sure enough it's in great condition, barely any scratches even on the glossy parts.
If it was the 90001 (left side glossy with internal power supply) probably, but a way older, 79001, no way, probably the previous owner really took care of it before having to sell on a hard situation
I noticed each of PS2 games you tested were stored in sleeves. Even the one inside the plastic case. Do you normally store them in sleeves, within the hard case?

There were some early ps2 controllers that didn’t have rumble motors. I remember my very first ps2 the original model didn’t have any rumble motors but looked like a DualShock 2, and was jealous when my parents bought my sister a ps2 slim and hers came with a DualShock 2 with rumble motors
What it could be, there is a black version of the original “analog” controller that came before the dualshock which looked just like it, which shipped with early ps2 like mine, and later ps1, it looked just like DualShock 2s. That’s what it might be
Bluenose Bear well to be fair the analog controller that came with later ps1 and early ps2s got replaced with DualShock 2s early on really quick. So not a lot of people knew about it
@@ultramagnushurts It's surprising it happened at all given that there's a number of games that actually require the Dual Shock 2, and having owned both the PS1 and PS2 the Dual Shock 1 did come with rumble. It was an answer to the analogue and rumble compatible N64 controller after all. I digress, the DS2 actually had touch sensitive buttons which could trigger different actions based upon how hard they were pressed. While this wasn't commonly implemented it was necessary to progress in some games, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time being a good example of this as it had a late dungeon where the puzzles required this feature.
flarpman2233 that’s true. I’m not sure why Sony did it at all tbh either. I was 10 when I got it and remember it vividly, and I have it somewhere in my attic boxed away. I know a lot of the FPS didn’t differentiate between the analogue and the DualShock but I do remember some games had to have a DualShock and I had to breakdown and spend my allowance to buy one.
Purchased one of these refurbished PS2 slims from GameStop this week - in part based on watching your video. Mine turned out to be not as clean - but not too bad. The controller was a dual-shock fairly worn - but useable. The system works - plays PS2 games fine. PS1 games, not so well. Some appear to work, but then simply stop. Some don't play at all. Guessing its the laser. Will probably replace it with a new one. Enjoyed the video.
The ps2 controller is official, when I the ps2 bundle brand new back in the day it came with 2 controllers and one of them was lighter and felt cheaper
No, they are not official. Sony never made rumbleless DualShock, otherwise they won't be called DualShock if it was rumbleless. What they were is knock-off controller commonly from Asia.
The last couple years of PS2 came without dualshock because SONY lost the licensing for the technology and thats why the PS3 launched with no dualshock. This should have been obvious.
I believe the controller that you received is a Japanese PS1 Analog Controller, which came out over there before the original Dualshock 1. It didn't feature rumble but was identical in every other way, and it came in black. It did not indicate any label next to the shoulder buttons like the DS2 did later.
I have ordered a few consoles from GameStop and they have always been working and in good condition. Disc based games can be hit or miss, but the systems have always been nice.
I believe there was a time that Sony was infringing on a patent for the rumble feature and did not want to pay for the use of it. They tried to go without it but the negative feedback from consumers and eventually folded and brought it back.

Bangin' Badger Bangin' Badger it’s definitely clickbaity... it’s walking that line a little too closely. The wording of the title alludes to him not getting what he paid for. It’s no different that if I said “ I ordered a big Mac from McDonald’s, but you won’t believe what was in the bag”... Only for there to have been exactly what I ordered with no deviations. Why couldn’t he have just said “I ordered a refurbished PS2 from GameStop... And it’s not bad” ? It’s definitely more subtle than some of the overtly blatant click bait that a lot of other youtubers will use, but it’s there. The entire purpose of saying *“… And this is what they sent me”* is to keep peoples interest piqued throughout the video because they’re expecting something more/unusual/different. So you end up watching more of it expecting some big surprise, or omission than you would have if you had known it wasn’t going to be anything but what he ordered.
@@quiettimegaming3642 it's how UA-camrs attract clicks, it's almost standard for all UA-camrs these days. It triggers someone's curiosity and pulls them into the video to see what happened. I really don't blame him because he isn't one of those big channels that attract the lowest common denominator (kids) in to watch videos on fortnite. You have to have a title that draws the eye of people who arnt subscribed to the channel, who may be curious to see what he got when he ordered the ps2. If it was labeled as 'i ordered a ps2 from GameStop... And it was ok' then there would be no curiosity about the contents of the video and the user may pass the video by. I don't like clickbaity titles but it's just how the system works, regardless of if it's a video or a news article, they all have titles like this to get you to click to find out more.
Joshua Willoughby I wouldn’t say that it’s standard for all youtubers and channels. I wouldn’t even say it’s standard for most channels. But over the past year or so I have admittedly been seeing that intentionally vague and clickbaity wording more than ever before. But that’s just and excuse to justify misleading or crappy actions. Saying “everyone else is doing it” is never an acceptable justification for doing something that you know is wrong. On top of that, if you’re willing to click bait it shows that you are willing to sacrifice long term viability and respect in exchange for a few extra clicks now. Because while he maybe a younger/smaller channel now… He won’t be forever, these kind of things won’t be forgotten, and like every other UA-camr that does stuff like this, one day someone is going to make a video and call him out for all of his instances of lies and click bait and misleading his audience over the years… And everyone will just hop all over it because people love to be outraged. You can see MatPat going through that exact same thing right now, where everyone’s calling him out for anything he’s ever done… And even things he didn’t, all Because people felt he used a misleading title and thumbnail for his recent HeartBound video. And things started snowballing from there. In fact I would argue more of the opposite position. Where, *if everyone is doing something, why not stand out by being the only person who isn’t?* The reality is that good content doesn’t need to click bait. And there was nothing wrong with this video, meaning the clickbait wasn’t unnecessary.
i just did some research and i believe what you got is called the "dual analog controller" which is actually a ps1 controller produced in 97 and 98 then discontinued and superseded by dualshock 2 when the ps2 came out. the is an article on wikipedia called "dual analog contoller" which is where i am getting this info from.
there was different versions of the ps2 slim. the ones where the whole left part of the top was glossy, not just the stripe in the middle, had their poweradaptor integrated, so just a 2 pole power cable coming out of the system straight into the wall, no trafo box in between.
I think the PS2 controller without rumble is a scph-10520, which is a PS2 controller with analoge sticks and no dualshock. Also, thanks for the great series!
The PS2 slim controller was still a Dualshock as far as I remember. The difference was the finish, the original felt very oily, while the slim was rougher. Possibly I was just comparing newer controllers to used ones but that's what I remember.
I would recommend placing tape on the door lock on the door closed detector. This is a common problem with the PS2 Slim if your system does not read discs. Mine had this problem, and this fixed it.
for a little time when the PS2 came out the controllers stopped having the rumble motors but brought it back after heavy negative feedback. I think it had something to do with a patent
From browsing an older-ish (08') message board, it seems that Wal-mart was also selling those PS2 controllers. from what they described on the board it also had places for the rumble motor housing
At least in europe, one of the wildest things I seen was very late revisions of Slim PS2 that has "the Figure eight" going straight to the Slim console itself, so they even packed a internal power transformer to the slim's shell aside rest of the slimmed down PS2. These revisions are though so late that they are immune to memory card based FreeMCboot homebrew solutions and probably most resistant to modchip installations making them a bit less desirable for playing backups or imports...
I've found PS2 to be more dependable, though. I've been through 3 PS3s and will have to get a 4th if I ever want to play again, but my old PS2 I got at launch still works great even though I've put as many hours on it as all 3 PS3s combined.

@@doomkid02 all my issues were because of the ceramic paste they use between the processor and heat sink aging. When it gets old, dried-out, and cracked, it doesn't work well anymore. The difference in effectiveness between ceramic and silver is negligible, but silver lasts a lot longer. Having one long session with expired thermal paste is enough to overheat the area of the board around the processor to the point it gets damaged. I wish they charged us the extra money and used silver paste. I'd think even for people lucky enough to have not had problems, the assurance that they won't have any problems in the future that comes with a silver thermal paste would be worth the negligible price difference. Ceramic is about 15 cents cheaper to use per machine, but also saves money because there are less mistakes; if a machine accidentally applies the ceramic a little bit outside the lines so to speak, the conductivity of ceramic isn't enough to damage the motherboard, but with silver they'd have to be sure every application was correct.
there was a specific model of PS2 slim that came with 2 non-rumble controllers. My wife's parents bought one around 2007 - 2008 and I thought it was so weird that they had no rumble feature.
Fu fact the tape you see on the ribbon often, it's not to get it out of the way of the optical pickup, it's so the ribbon doesn't pop up too gmhigh and scratch the disc, we see that very often in PS2 slims.
I still have my PS2 slim from when it launched & I've probably played close to 2,000 discs in it & quite possibly even more ( combination of DVD, CD, & games ) & it still works. If it stopped working tomorrow I wouldn't complain. I got way more than my money's worth from that console.
Both the PS2 Slim and the newest PS3 redesign were released in budget bundles that included controllers without the rumble feature. Thus, not an anomaly, just a cost savings tactic by Sony.

The Dual-Shock 3 is also as light as the DS2.

A solution is to bend the ribbon down, but in your video, you said that if you bought a laser replacement that ribbon would be taped down. Thoughts and solutions?

Actually, it's the other way around. Newer PS2s have issues playing some PS1 AND PS2 games. The older PS2s run all PS2 games, and all of the PS1 library, save like 5-6 games. This is why I have a fat PS2 instead of a slim one. Plus, the slim ones get hotter.
@TheLegendkiller2100 Eh. I can't say for sure whether that's true or not. I'm not saying there isn't evidence supporting the slims over the fats, but I think that really depends on how well one takes care of their consoles. Noticed right away,
Remember when the PS3 was first released, Sony was hit with a lawsuit from a company stating that the rumble mechanism was their creation; not Sony's.
Well, PS2 was manufactured until the end of 2012, so it is very well possible that they had to modify the dualshock 2 as well because of that lawsuit.
@@paolocazzaniga8735 No Gamestop makes there own controllers and lie and say its a Sony one
I was always under the impression. That the rumble was removed because they thought the rumble would disrupt the SixAxis functionality.
You are (partially) correct about the first paragraph but not the second one. That controller is a knock-off most likely from Asia.
I have a ps2 controller that doesn't have any rumble motor in it so maybe there were some made
I have a feeling that controller was made after Sony lost the lawsuit over that rumble motor patent.
Pretty sure if it's an SCPH-10520 that's exactly what it is.

True but it said Sixaxis on the top which this didnt have on it for some reason, maybe it was rubbed off or something? >_O
No, they are not official. Sony never made rumbleless DualShock, otherwise they won't be called DualShock if it was rumbleless. What they were is knock-off controller commonly from Asia.
@yelsew82 Except that the Sixaxis only works on the PS3 & PS4. Not for PS2.
@@KillRei Yeah you're right I was thinking about the ps3 >_

Yeah the original ps3 paddle wasn't dualshock 3
I believe the controller that you received is a Japanese PS1 Analog Controller, which came out over there before the original Dualshock 1. I believe there was a time that Sony was infringing on a patent for the rumble feature and did not want to pay for the use of it. They tried to go without it but the negative feedback from consumers and eventually folded and brought it back.

There are three types of PS2 disc - blue back, silver back, and gold back. The gold ones are dual layer DVDs, and a lot of the failures with the PT1 up to like PX3 fat models were with those gold discs. God of War is one that comes to mind.
On the controller without the rumble motors, those were out around the first year of the PS3, the non-rumbles were made since Sony was facing a patent case that could have caused them to not be able to import rumble controllers, one to the key reasons the PS3 original controller didn't have rumble. The Non-rumbles came in a Christmas Bundle back in 2007 as a second controller.

Kind of clickbaity.

Because while he maybe a younger/smaller channel now… He won’t be forever, these kind of things won’t be forgotten, and like every other UA-camr that does stuff like this, one day someone is going to make a video and call him out for all of his instances of lies and click bait and misleading his audience over the years…
And everyone will just hop all over it because people love to be outraged.
Where, *if everyone is doing something, why not stand out by being the only person who isn’t?*
The reality is that good content doesn’t need to click bait. And there was nothing wrong with this video, meaning the clickbait wasn’t unnecessary.

Ceramic is about 15 cents cheaper to use per machine, but also saves money because there are less mistakes; if a machine accidentally applies the ceramic a little bit outside the lines so to speak, the conductivity of ceramic isn't enough to damage the motherboard, but with silver they'd have to be sure every application was correct.

adnan rafiqui Please tell me this is a joke. 😂😂😂
@@DrakkarCalethiel Nope, its sadly true 😂
He can't be that stupid can he? why am i not shocked by this.
@@stevec6965 He ripped off the ps vita. Looks like he stopped ripping off nintendo. Probably got threatened to get sued. Hopefully sony does something because this guy is annoying.
You'll notice that when u play PS2 CD-ROMs, the PS2 vibrates.
You know what you did... Don't pretend like your title wasn't misleading
not the first time he's done this...
That's not misleading, the ENTIRE premise of the video is represented, it is clickbait, but not misleading
@@xferal8499 Ladies and Gentlemen we got a fanboy
@@dasolemnvizitah4473 really? Cause this is the first time I've watched one of his videos lmao, I'm just able to tell the difference between clickbait and bring misleading
When you repaired PS2 slims, have you ever encountered some that left a ring around discs? I'm noticing that my old ps2 slim is doing that now. I think from some videos I found it says that the ribbon for the laser is coming up and scratching the disc. A solution is to bend the ribbon down, but in your video, you said that if you bought a laser replacement that ribbon would be taped down. Thoughts and solutions?
PS2 was the first home console in which I convinced my dad to buy me at 13 years old. I still remember playing nfs underground 1 and never getting tired of it! My favorite game on the PS2 would probably be Smackdown vs. Raw 2007
not bad but I will stick with my PS3 is my fav
It was thing back then I remember not having rumble
I didn't know you could get ps2s refurbished this day and age. I actually need to get a newer ps2 since the newer games don't work on the old ps2
Wut? Is that seriously a thing? I never knew that lol
I've had my fat PS2 for years and it still works just as good as it ever did. Never had a problem with it. I play it regularly too, considering I like collecting games, PS2 games especially.
@@richardsinclair7661 No the older PS2 does not last long.I bought the fat PS2 on launch from Toys R Us after 1 year it died.Bought the slim on launch at Blockbuster Video still working in 2019...
@@CAPCOM784 I never said the fat PS2s last longer than the slim ones. I said I couldn't be sure, and it depended on whether you took care of your console. I should've said this as well, but you also have to hope you're just lucky enough to avoid getting a bad unit.
Don't treat your experience as fact. By your logic, I could claim the fat PS2s are better because I've had 2 slims die on me, before being replaced by my current fat PS2 and it still works perfectly to this day, all these years later.
Ive got 2 paddles without dual shock its easy to figure out just take a old broken paddle and open it up and pull the drums and transfer them into it
I really want a PS2 slim 9000 model, not the 7000 one, but the problem is most online retailers don't specify which model they have. The only obvious external difference is the power brick on the 7000 (the 9000 has an internal power supply) but the pictures usually don't show that.
