Thanks a ton. I have a manual for the 22 hp v twin and it shows two different oil drain systems, neither of which are on my engine. I tried calling Briggs and Stratton's help number in the manual and the best the automated system could do was direct me to local engine shops. No human interaction at all with B/S. It's the day after the 4th of July so no one is working today, but your video saved me. I've never seen or known about the little oil valve on the side of this engine, but your video was exactly what I needed. Thanks very much. Outstanding work.

It helps to take 2 pieces of wood at least 2 inches and place in front of each tire on the opposite side of the oil drain and push your mower up on the blocks of wood, it helps the oil drain faster that way and makes sure you get it all, I'm really kinda surprised he did not do this.
Dennis thank you for your clear and concise instructions. I was searching for UA-cam for blade sharpening when I came across your video. I learned that I needed a clear plastic tube to help drain the oil. I didn't have one, so I thought. I went back to my manuals, which I keep in large Ziploc bags, and found the tube along with a deck hose adapter. I too don't like having to keep up with extra parts. For my first oil change I improvised by cutting an old shoebox top in half and fashioning it under the oil drain plug and oil filter to divert as much oil as possible. It worked well to keeping oil off the frame. Since you helped me, I'd like to offer a tip. I usually drain the gas from my lawn equipment engines during the Texas winter month so that old gas doesn't gum up the carburetors over time. I put an inline shutoff valve between the gas tank and fuel filter which allows me to shut off the fuel and run the engine until it runs out.🙂

Your tip is great, I do the same with all my equipment. When it's time to store, I shut off the fuel valve and run the carb dry. Saves on a lot of maintenance. It's an old tip from my Dad. :)

Dana, same kind of situation here and you can easily become overwhelmed with having to learn so much technical/mechanical stuff. City girls do have potential though, and when you have to do these things, I will say you start to get confidence. It's way cool to be competent, but sure takes some grit and patience when you've spent most of your life and never had to do the "man things." You go girl! And agree with you, Dennis Coffey is awesome with what he teaches.
cloudskimmin they sure do. Soon after that I had changed the car, lawnmower and tractor batteries. Greased the zerks on the tractor and lawnmower. And changed fuel and air filters, and changed oil and spark plugs on lawnmower. I learn a ton here and the more I do the more the country girl wins out!! 🥳🥳

Great video. Seeing the oil spill when removing the filter was super helpful. Knowing that was going to happen I built a triangle with raised edges with foil. Slid this under the filter before removing it and it funneled the oil perfectly into the catch pan.

My father passed away years ago, too soon, so was never able to learn this from him, so thanks for teaching me how to do this. now to get out there and do it. Soon as I heard parts house I knew that term as my folks and I lived in Eastern Tennessee when he passed.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos, they are done with common sense, good camera work and simple easy to follow understandable language. I have a suggestion that will help lessen the oil mess that spills during the filter removal Take a plastic jug such as a gallon size, ,, and cut the bottom half off at an angel, like you were going to make a scoop out of it. The neck is the handle, the bottom is the scoop portion. After you get the filter partially loosened, place the open enc of the plastic bottle under the filter, then continue unscrewing the filter, the bottle will catch the overflow of oil, after it is completely unscrewed, let it fall into the plastic scoop, then place it into the oil pan manually. Job done and less mess. I hope this is of use to you.

Thank you for the kind reply. I love all the videos you have produced that I have seen.. I agree totally with the removal and replacement of the yellow oil drain valve, that was poor engineering from the git go.
You have a varied array of information and knowledge. Like the drywall repair in your garage, masterful job, never saw it done so well and so informative.
I will tell you what I would appreciate very much, if you can either produce a video or point me to one you know of for electric meter testing use.... I have looked at many You Tube videos for use of meters, all are on no use to me. I am meter ignorant...none of the meters are even similar as mine in the videos, and the terminology is all different for each use they apply it to. I don 't know an amp from a microorganism... If you can provide any help on this I would be very thankful. I would be thankful to be able to test for continuity for one thing.

1) I took off the yellow factory oil drain plug and installed a 1-1/2" brass bushing on the engine block drain & then reinstalled the yellow drain on to this brass bushing. That made each oil change, going forward much easier (no tube needed & no oil mess) as the oil now simply drained straight down into the pan. The brass bushing cost me $2.00
2) Before removing the oil filter, get a regular paper plate , and bend it in half (putting a V in the middle). Then slip the bent plate under the oil filter and proceed to remove the filter. "NO MORE MESS."
3) Your fuel filter is dirty and should be changed. Ebay has them, when I last looked, 5 filters for $2.50

64 yrs old and now living in the country. I have the same mower. Fixed 2 flats, I learned how to change blades and sharpen blades, check tire pressure and always check oil before mowing. I’m way late in changing oil but will do so after I get what I need. I’ll watch your vids on all the other things you show on maintenance! Woohoo and again thanks for CS information!

I was wondering if you changed the tube or use the flat tire stuff I have 2 slow leaks and just wondering which is easiest thanks
Dennis, after I've drained the engine oil, and to avoid spills from the horizontally placed oil filter, I drill a 1/4" hole in the outside bottom edge of the oil filter. I can still place my filter wrench over the filter for its removal after the filter has drained of oil. It's a lot easier to wipe my drill bit than it is cleaning up all that spilled oil. -Gerry, Kirkwood, MO USA

Super helpful vid! I'm not really mechanically inclined/learned, and I'm trying to get my own Husqvarna YTH22V46 back in working order after it was left to rot outside under a tarp for a couple years. I have a feeling I'm going to be referring to many videos on this channel for help.

Suggestion : for the filter side , to prevent all the oil on the frame , utilize an old gallon jug and cut it lengthwise in half just below the “tapered” top part of the jug, kind of like making a scoop . Trim it to fit just under the filter area and assure that the top of the makeshift “reverse funnel”is pointing to the waste oil receptacle . Keep the cap if it helps control the spillage.

Thank you so much sir... I have never changed the oil on a tractor before. Didn't have a clue what I was doing (and the manual is 0 help, lol). Oh and here's a tip for you, if you take the little plastic cup (that the cardboard backing is attached to) that comes over the top of the new oil filter instead of throwing it in the trash, stick it under the filter when you remove it, all the oil drains into the cup and not all over the tractor frame! Then just empty the little cup full of oil into your disposal oil and then throw the plastic thing in the trash. Worked like a charm for me!

Hey Dennis, great video, a little trick I use when changing the filter is to make a makeshift pan from aluminum foil to place under the filter to make it less messy. Also changing the oil while warmed up it'll come out quicker. Good video, great work.

Thanks for sharing. I actually have mixed feelings about warming the engine before draining the oil........on one hand, I agree, it will help drain the oil better. But on the other hand, it also stirs up any sediment that may be in the oil pan and prevent it all from draining....so, not sure which way is best :)

When it comes to the oil filter, I hate the mess it can make so I place a thick cloth under the filter so oil doesn't seep under the engine and everywhere else it goes. Less clean up time.

I was watching other videos before I found Dennis's video. Thought the same thing. Husq-varna, NOT Husq -ah-varna! For the love of God!
Thanks for posting. I just changed the oil in my YTH22V42, which works the same way. Two observations:
1 - I had a lot more trouble pulling out those plastic plugs to remove the cowling. I was able to fold a coathanger into a loop and pull the one on the oil drain side. On the other side, I pried it with a flathead screwdriver. Pushing on the back of the plug like you did in the video got me nowhere.
2 - I lost track of my drain tube, so, I just did it without. That results in some oil spilling on the frame of the mower. For anyone watching this who's lost the tube and wondering if you can do it, the answer is, yes, it's no big deal. You will probably just need to wipe off the frame afterward to ensure it doesn't drip later or collect dust.

Good video Dennis. For the oil filter, I'll use a milk jug. I cut from the bottom corner about 2.5 inches up the side and about 2.5 inches across the bottom and make it about 6 or so inches long including one of the curves on the side. I slide that under the filter and the oil drains right into the pan. I do put towels on either side just in case. I wish i could add a picture because its hard to explain.

Thank you very much for making this video! I've never changed oil in anything and dreaded doing it on my YTH22V46. The manual really doesn't describe the process very well. I bought the oil and filter and watched your video on my phone, pausing along the way. Had it done no problem in less than 30 mins. I had to use filter plyers on mine cause the dealer that sold it to me had it on there way too tight! The biggest help this video provided was the heads up on what a mess taking the old filter off was! Much Appreciation +Subscribed

I'd like to give back to you but sharing a tip I saw on another youtuber's video. Put paper (paper bag torn open or newspaper) under the oil filter to soak up and drain the oil into the pan.

Punch a hole in the filter to drain it and put a thin rag atop the chassis before spinning it off.
I saw your later vid on replacing the quick oil drain valve - instead of a cap on a nipple. On my old one I terminated w/ a 3/8” air line ball valve (I removed the handle and store it with my tractor stuff.
I haven’t done it yet on the current tractor but
I’ll probably just loctite double-nuts onto the valve handle shaft, and turn it w/ a nut driver.

Here's a tip...put a paper plate with several paper towels in it under the filter before you take it off. It will catch all of the oil. No oil on the frame this way. I use the Fram Tough Guard TG3614...instead of the OEM filter. It's longer, but it fits behind the cowling...and for 4$ you can get the Fram end cap wrench. I couldn't find an end cap wrench for the OEM filter.
Fram customer service confirmed that the TG3614 was a better filter and would work as a replacement for my OEM Briggs filter...same as Fram PH8170.
Here's another tip...use a gallon jug to catch the oil from the drain...that way you can put the cap on it and it won't spill. And, the mower is up high enough for the jug to sit right under the oil drain so that the hose fits right in. Better by far than the way that you're doing it. I save and use the gallon sized Arizona Iced Tea Jugs because they have screw on caps.
Just thought you could use some advice after seeing how you're changing your oil.
Great ideas Ed! I save my empty 5qt jugs that my new oil comes in. I can run the hose into one of those empty jugs. I haul a bunch of them to the parts store after a round of oil changes at my house. Thanks so much for the tips....way better than the way I'm doing it!!
I usually just place a few paper towels under it.. but the plate is a good idea, to catch any oil that soaks through.
I was going to say the same thing. Stiff paper plate under there to drain into a pan underneath. Not a drop touched the frame. Popping out those clips from behind is a pain too. I brace a screwdriver head against the back of the clip and then press on that to save my fingers a little soreness. Either way, another great video, Dennis.

My husky is 25 horse with 54 steel deck. Just turned 130 hours. At 100 did oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter and pulled and sharpened blades.
You can run the far side tires up on 2 by 6 boards, helps keep some off the frame. I do it all the time.
Also wipe off block before putting new filter on.

Changing oil and not the filter doesn’t make any sense, filter should be changed every time. I use Synthetic 10w30. I put a paper plate under the filter and spray the frame with parts cleaner when done, seems to work pretty good. Just my input.

Very nice video.
1) You can get a hose elbow for the clear drain tube so you don't have to bend it down.
2) You can make a nice drain channel out of plain aluminum foil to place under the oil filter and bend down the side so the oil drains neatly over the side right down into the oil pan

Great video as usual Dennis, I've gotten to the point now where I don't even have to dirty up an oil drain pan by using an empty 14 lb. cat litter jug (always plentiful supply with having 2 cats), they are twice as wide, very stable, and lower than using 5 quart oil containers which can tip over, I just place the end of the engine drain hose down inside it, I use a cut out piece of any type of plastic jug to make a channel wide enough to catch & direct the oil filter oil into the same jug opening with everything staying pretty much drip free, afterwards I just reseal the jug and take it and the drained filter (inside a disposable plastic grocery store deli container) to the recycling center whenever convenient.

Since I've been viewing several videos trying to figure out the process, I saw where someone cut the top 1/2 side of a 1/2 gallon container (that has the handle) and used it to catch the oil and oil filter when you are removing old oil filter. Its a tight area and I haven't tried it yet, but since viewing your video I expect I will be successful and will try it. Thank you again.
That sounds like one of the best ideas yet! Several people have suggested various items to use as a tray to channel the oil to a container.
