    Found it frustrating to figure out how to edit a RAW image in Photos knowing that I shot both RAW and JPEG. After some time I figured it out and wanted to share it with anyone else who might have trouble finding it.

    Thanks for the good info Tom. Here's another way to toggle between RAW and JPEG: While editing an image, left click your mouse to open a menu offering the RAW or JPEG option.

      So I just realized, even when it is changed to RAW when I drag it out of photos on to my desktop (so I can import it to lightroom) it goes back to JPEG. This is so annoying! How do you use photos and lightroom / PS together?

      I haven't done a deep dive into Affinity yet but so far it seems easier to get around in than my old version of photoshop which I've been clinging on to. This comment is for Anna. Unfortunately I couldn't reply to you comment because of the dreaded "Comment failed to post" error. Here's a long reply :)
    It really is tough figuring out what direction to take. For me a lot of it comes down to having easy access to my photos from devices and a seamless way to have all photos from all devices get to my library. What I mean by that is that I take photos with my DSLR but also my iPhone (a mix of photos I care about and junk). With photos they all end up in my iCloud Photos Library and local Photos Library (I have it retain full images locally). Then I always have access to my photos from my mac, phone and iPad where I can manage them, edit them and share them. Now Adobe products can also do this however you miss out on some of the seamless abilities that the native photos app has with your devices (eg. easily browse and share a photo from within Instagram...) or email it or whatever. BTW I pay for add'l iCloud Photo storage which seems to be getting cheaper but certainly not the least expensive cloud photo storage option.
    That being said, the Photos Mac app isn't a pro app and doesn't yet reach being a prosumer app. I say yet because it is getting better each release(latest one that came with Sierra got better) They realize photos is a big part of the iPhone and what people do with their phones. Although it's a bit clunky you can do a fair amount of editing. It's no photoshop for sure so if you're looking to use layers masking, etc. you'll need to do that outside of Photos or via one of the plugin/extension apps like Affinity Photo.
    In terms of organizing photos... yeah not great. Sure it can self organize by location (geotagging which is nice if you have geotagging on your DSLR and leave it on given battery drain). It does a fair job with face recognition and surprisingly, image recognition (I just typed in table and it found all images with tables which was impressive but LR and Google do this just as well).
    I'm torn really. I even have access to LR and have not made the switch. Not only because cost (although I can get it sort of free - wife has a license she's not using) but because of not having my photos in the apple ecosystem. I feel once i make that move, it's going to be a pain in the ass to sync and share. Will it easily sync my photos take via phone to LR to their cloud?
    One app I would consider trying out is On1 RAW which is a combo photo editing and organizing/management app. It's certainly full featured and probably does 90+% of what you can do with PS from a photographers standpoint and it's designed solely for photography unlike PS really. I haven't tried their image management/storing... though. This app I think is under $200.
    I also own Affinity Photo which is like $40 but you get a ton for your money. There's a bit of a learning curve but this app give PS a run for the money. No real photo management though. You drag in a directory where your photos are located and go from there. (no albums or sharing or whatever). They have plugins for the Photos app which are OK. But for sophisticated editing, you're still exporting from Photos and then editing and importing back in.

    When I go to edit photo and try to put it to raw format it still comes up gray and I can't access it. My mac book pro is 8 years old too

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому +1

      Guessing that either A. there is no raw version of this photo or B. something with your mac is not supporting either the RAW images or the RAW files that your camera generates. You could make sure you have latest updates installed since I think Apple adds camera support from time to time usually adding new cameras that it supports.
      One other thing you can try is to export the photo using the Unmodified Original from the File menu/Export. This would normally export both the JPG and the RAW file if there is one.
      Here's another thing. Go find your Photo Library file. Its normally in your user directory in Pictures. Right mouse click that file and choose Show Package Contents. This will show you all of the files and bits that make up your library. Be careful in there though. Don't delete anything or move stuff... Then go find Masters and in here find the year, month, day of the image you're looking for. You should be able to see images like IMG_6508.JPG and IMG_6508.CR2. Where CR2 is the RAW (your extension might be different for RAW). This would tell you if the RAW version was imported. You could go digging into those directories by day to see if you can find any with .CR2.
      Of course your camera must be setup for shooting RAW and remembering that your iPhone won't shoot RAW. I was having a problem where I couldn't get the RAW version but just to remember that I shot that one photo with my phone :)
      Lastly, take a pic with your camera. Connect it to your mac or insert the card. Let it mount on your mac and open it up and dig in there to see if you can find any RAW images. If you find one, drag it to your desktop. Then try to import it into Photos to see if it takes it.
      Hope that's helpful.

      Tom- super helpful. I have a canon g1x that is 4 years old or so. I was shooting in AUTO and RAW is not an option. When I went to program and to put it in raw mode it wouldn't take a picture because I didn't have enough space on my memory card. Turns out I was just shooting in JPEG😔

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  6 років тому +1

      For that, I believe that you have to export the RAW image file out of Photos first. Then you can open in photoshop, edit in RAW and either export/save as RAW or JPG out of Photoshop and then import (or drag in) to Photos. I'm not aware of a Photo app extension that will open a RAW image in Photoshop directly and then save back to Photos when you're done. There might be one out there but even the extensions I have for other editing apps that open the image from Photos converts them or takes the JPG.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  5 років тому

      I don't think you can share the RAW from within Photos. It will convert it to a Jpeg. You would have to Export the image and select Export unmodified originals. I will then export the original JPG and RAW image. From there you can email it... If you go and use the Mac's Share feature though (from the right mouse click menu...) it will probably convert it again because it's going to be a large file and many people won't be able to view it.

    Hi, I am an ex-Aperture user and I am currently looking for an alternative. I am not a professional photographer, but I like to shoot in RAW with a digital camera, and to scan/edit films from my analog camera. So, even though I'm far from professional, I appreciate being able to edit photos properly (no pre-made scenes/filters) and have a good way to manage images (so, Photoshop is not enough). Do you think Photo does all that? I have to admit I never tried to use it properly, as I found the interface not very intuitive coming from Aperture. Another option I was looking at was to buy After Shot Pro, but as an "hobbits" it feels a bit too expensive. For the same reason Lightroom is not an option due to its subscription model. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

    When I do this, it says my Mac doesn't support the Raw images. But when my friends does it (he has Mac 2015) he can do it, but not me (I have 2014). I also have the latest El Captain update

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  4 роки тому

      My guess is that your camera is newer than the OS. Apple puts out updates to support newer cameras RAW file format. Not all RAW file formats are the same and each new model camera that comes out may have a new file format OR apple jjust doesn't recognize the newer camera in an old OS. So my guess is that your camera is newer than El Capitan and Apple won't update the OS to support the camera since El Cap is pretty old. Hope that's helpful.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  6 років тому

      Hi Jennifer. That is because there is no RAW version of the photo you're viewing OR it wasn't imported with the JPEG. I sometimes go looking for the RAW on an image as well and then I realize that this one came from my iphone camera app which doesn't capture in RAW/DNG formats. So most likely you don't have a RAW version of the image. I hope that's helpful.

      Same here. Wondering if we have a newer version of photos since this video is over a year old now. I just want to access the original file so I can open in photoshop.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      Still works for me with the latest version. Find the photo, double click the photo, click the Edit button on the top next to Details and then right mouse click the photo or use the Image menu and select Use RAW as Original.
      Also when viewing your photos from Photos where you are seeing all of your photos (not just having one opened), if you have a RAW and a JPEG you will see a a R or J in a little square on top of the image. In the video above at 27 sec or so in you see me talk about this. The new version of Photos has this little R or J on the top right. This tells you that you have both a RAW and JPG image file If you only have the JPEG then you will not see anything.
      So if you don't see your images with a J in a little square that tells you that you're either A. not importing both the RAW and JPG or more likely B. your camera is set to only shoot JPG. Possible also that the Mac isn't recognizing the Nikon RAW but that would surprise me.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      hi Agoraphone. It works the same way. Just checked it against the new version. The only difference I see is the placement of the little J or R in the small square to indicate that you have both image files and which one is being displayed or used. It's now in the top right corning of the thumbnail when viewing you images. You still need to be in Edit mode on an image to then select the option from the Image menu for Use RAW as Original.
      However, although I do use Photoshop from time to time, use an old version so I don't have any plugins for Photos to use with Photoshop (not sure if there are any). This means I think that if you want to edit your RAW images in photoshop, you need to export the Unmodified Original and then take that copy and edit in photoshop and then import back into Photos. You can do opening the image, then use File menu to Export and then Export Unmodified Original. If you do have both the RAW and JPG, it will export both of them. If you only see the JPG, my guess is that you didn't import the RAW from your camera or your camera is not set to shoot both RAW and JPG (which is probably not the default). Hope that helps.

    Thank you! Do you know how do you open a raw file in Adobe Bridge? Or move these files with Raw files intact to an external hard drive?

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому +1

      Christy Peterson Fairy Tale Digital Downloads you can select the images and then choose export from the file menu and select unmodified originals. This will give you both the original Raw and jpeg originally imported in to photos. You can export them to an original drive. I'd run a small test before exporting a ton of photos so you can see how they will be organized. As for how to open in adobe bridge, I think you can open the files from there to manage them. Hope that helps.
      Another option would be to open the photo library contents and navigate to the originals and copy them out from there but I'd create a backup before doing this because if you're going to continue to use photos, if you mistakenly move the photo files then photos won't find the original.

      @tomn68  7 років тому

      thefitartist Hi, not sure if I'm following you. You can import RAW+JPG from your camera (or just RAW or just JPG) based on what your camera settings are. If you want to edit these outside of Photos, you can do that. It's easiest to do this with an app that supports the Photos Extensions (plugin) where you can open the image directly in Photos into an app like Affinity and when you save it, it saves it back into Photos.
      If you want to edit in Lightroom or Photoshop (I don't believe there are Extensions for these apps), you would need to first need to export them image using the file menu and selecting to export the unmodified original. This will/should export out your RAW and JPG files. Then edit in your app of choice but now you will need to import in your new image. Then decide if you want to keep the original or not. Hope that helped.

Otherwise you would need to use adobe's digital negative converter which is free here... helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

    My RAW image shows in Photos on my Mac desktop computer, but when I try to drag it to my desktop, it won't open,but says: "The export operation failed to create a file for the photo identified below: Export Complete with Errors; IMG_0035.CR2. The operation couldn't be completed" when I double click on it within Photo, an exclamation mark within a triangle shape appears. I have Photoshop CC 2015. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  6 років тому

      Hi Debbie. I'm not sure why you're getting this error, however what would normally occur in this case is that Photos performs an export to create a file to put on to your desktop. When it does this, it generates a JPEG. Essentially it's processing the RAW image as a JPEG. I suppose this is because not many apps can handle a RAW image file. What you might try is selecting your images in Photos and then choose File/Export/Unmodified Originals. This should export your RAW and JPEG (if there is one). Then you can open PS and select File/Open and choose your image. This will open the image in Camera Raw (it's like a tool within Photoshop) where you can process the image and make edits... If you have trouble with that for some reason, you can also try opening the file through Adobe Bridge which probably came with your version of Photoshop.
      If during the export out of Photo's you're still getting errors... you might also make sure that you have all updates installed for Photos, your Mac OS and Photoshop in case there's an issue with an unsupported camera and it's RAW file format. Apple releases updates to support newer cameras along the way as well as updates to RAW because I believe the RAW format can differ from camera to camera...
      I hope this helps.

    So after you convert it to RAW in Photos, how do you open the file in other programs like Photoshop or Lightroom?

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      Just to clarify, you're not "converting" the file to RAW but just selecting which of the two imported images (the JPG and the RAW) that you want to work with.
      As far as editing, you have a few choices. I guess you might ask why import your images and store them in Photos if you have Lightroom. I do get it though that when it comes to using the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, your mac,...) that having them in Photos does make it easier especially once you have them on your phone, sharing, posting.... Otherwise Lightroom might be a really good option for managing, storing and editing your photos. OK so outside of that question, there's a bunch of plugin apps that Apple calls Extensions that lets you edit your images in 3rd party apps that work within Photo's like Affinity... (search for Photos extensions in the App Store)
      If you wanted to edit them in apps that are not 'built in' extensions, what you need to do is select the image in photos and from the file menu choose export. You can elect to export an unmodified original or a version that was already edited. If you export, it will export both the JPG and the RAW. Then you can open this in photoshop or lightroom... Once you're done, you can import your edited file back into Photos. You'll have your original as well as the newly edited photo. If you're planning on sharing this file, before you save your edited file in PS or LR, you might want to save the file as a JPG since the RAW image is pretty big and many apps won't work with them especially on your phone.
      Photoshop used to have a plugin for the old Aperture app (apple killed it a few years ago) where it would let you edit your photos within Photoshop and it would save it back to iPhoto which was nice but I don't believe that exists since the release of Photos.
      Hope that helps.

    thank you so much for the video. but i would like to ask if you know any way to mass convert all the images into RAW files.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      Well, not really. First though, you're not actually converting jpg to RAW. If anything it would be the other way around since the RAW is the one that has all of the photo data/info... and the JPG is a compressed, processed version of that (more or less).
      If you're asking how to change which is displayed and which is used for editing in mass, I don't think you can do that with Photos. If you shoot in RAW+JPG and use the Photo app to auto import (vs selecting files manually), it will import both, stack them (why you see the little square with the J in it) and display to you the JPG because that's the processed one.
      If however moving forward you manually import your photos, you can pick and choose only the CR2 RAW image files if you plan to edit all of your photos and don't care about the JPGs. If that's the approach, maybe change your camera setting to not shoot JPG and save the space and then Photos will just import the RAW since that's all you would have.
      The downside I think to only shooting and importing in the RAW is that you need to process/edit all of your photos otherwise they'll look a bit dark... AND many apps for sharing might not like RAW images files (they're also very large with today's cameras).
      Out of curiosity, why are you looking to do that?

    • @dheershah9697
      @dheershah9697 7 років тому

      so i have clicked a lot of photos in the RAW+JPG format on my camera. i then imported them to the photos app. It is showing as stacked (with the little J square).
      like you mentioned, thats the reason i click in JPG+RAW. sharing purposes, and convenience.
      i do not want to convert them per se but want to get the original RAW file so that i can extract it and store it in another location for future editing etc. (So that in the future don't need to go hunting for them and as a backup purpose.)
      for that i will need to convert all the stacked files to the RAW images and then export them to another file. Thats why i need to mass convert them. i tried using the smart albums and all to create a separate album but to no avail.
      Hence my query of any other way.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      dheer shah I don't think you can export just a RAW images but you could select a group of photos and choose export from the file menu and choose unmodified originals. This will export both file types. Play around with the setting for sub folder format since if you leave it as moment name, you will get a ton of folders each with a image in them.
      The other option would be to go directly into your photo library via the finder using Show Package Contents and then navigate to Masters. Here you original files are stored my year and date. You could Choose 2017 for example and then use the search field in your finder window to search for .CR2 which in my case is the canon raw file format. This give me a list of all RAW files from 2017. I can then copy them to an external drive. Be careful not to move them though. So if you drag them out be sure to hold the Option key when doing this to make sure you are seeing a plus sign as you drag them. Is start with just a small test and I'd also run whatever standard backup you do just in case you accidentally remove a file...
      If course if you have a spare external drive around, you could just create a copy of your entire photo library and rename it and then navigate into that masters directory whenever you're looking for a specific file. Could replace that directory every so often.
      Neither is ideal but the photos app isn't terribly flexible but is easy to use. I've been thinking about moving to Lightroom as many others have.

Definitely make sure yo uahve the latest updates installed because they add new camera support from time to time. One thing you can do is check to see if you even have the DNG master files within the Photos Library. Be careful not to move/delete anything because you can cause some damage.
      Also, try rebuilding the library... you can follow these steps to get this option when launching photos... Could be the library got corrupted.

    • @tomn68

      +Elizabeth Corgan Here's something you can try. Check to make sure you're actually importing in some RAW photo files. If you go to your user folder then to Pictures and find your Photos Library file. Right mouse click on it and choose Show Package Contents. This will show you the directory and file structure of the photos database/library. Just be careful not to delete anything in here. Next find the Masters folder. Inside here you'll see a folder for each year, month, day... Find a day where you are pretty sure you imported/took images that included a RAW version (My camera is set to take RAW+JPEG to get both versions imported). Open that folder for that day and look at the files that were imported. For me, I see JPEGs for each image plus a RAW file with the extension .CR2 (eg. IMG_1233.JPG and IMG_1233.CR2). That CR2 file is my RAW image. If I look at other days where I shot with my iPhone, I only see JPG files. If you're not seeing any RAW files/CR2 in those folders for days you thought you were shooting RAW, they check your camera settings again. Make sure you're setup to be creating RAW images.
      Another thing to check is to take a couple of pics with your camera. Hook the camera up to your mac or pop in your memory card so it mounts on your mac. Open up that card that is mounted on your desktop and again look for CR2 images. If there's none there, then that's the reason.

    In Mac Photo, when editing an image, the info displaying file size (in megabytes) is the same size whether I'm in RAW or JPEG. For me the average file size is about 6 MB, on par with a JPEG, and I really don't notice any difference in the amount of data I can edit, whether I'm doing it in RAW or JPEG. I'm thinking the image presented for editing has only the JPEG amount of data, whether the indicated format is RAW or JPEG. Has anyone else made a similar observation? Is there a work-a-round for this? Thanks!

      +Rick Kikta What I noticed is that when I go into Edit mode, then I do a get info on the photo so I can see its size while it's a jpeg. Now I right mouse click and choose RAW. I noticed that the size in the Get Info window doesn't change. However, if close the photo to get out of Edit mode, the Get Info window now shows the true size of the RAW image. I'm not exactly sure that this is telling me though. I suspect that you're editing the full RAW image but the file size isn't updated until you get out of edit mode. To test this. I open a photo in edit mode. Then do a Get Info. Change to RAW. Close photo to get out of Edit. Do Get Info and I see the size is larger. Go into Edit Mode and see the size is still larger.

      A couple of things to try. First would be to connect your camera, copy the raw and jpeg to your desktop and then in photos use the file/import feature and see if that works.
      Also you can open the photos library file (show package contents) and look to see if the raw images were ever imported. I have another video on my channel that shows how to do this and what to look for. This should show you if they were imported at all.
      Of course, first thing really is to make sure your camera is set to shoot in RAW. Check the camera and also check your memory card to see if they’re actually there.

Here I have Affinity extensions like Affinity Develop (every day full featured photo editor) and some specific extensions like Affinity Haze Removal and others. I think the app was like $39. Well, this video is 7 years old so it might not match your version of Photos. There's a link in the description to a video that's newer where Apple made it a bit easier to figure out if you have a RAW version and how to use it for editing.
      However if you are using the latest Photos app, it will say JPEG+RAW on the image when your viewing the image. Then I go to the Image menu and choose Use RAW as Original. I see it change to RAW quality and I can edit.
      I just tried this again with a new import from a Canon 6D and confirm that works. I'd say that if you do not see it say JPEG+RAW, then either you are not taking RAW images with your camera OR Apple doesn't support your Cameras RAW file format (there's different formats per manufacturers and can change with newer cameras and Apple has to update to support them). If this is an iphone, check that your taking RAW images. It's not on by default.
