  • This is a follow up video to an earlier one created for version 1 of Photos. In this video I'll show you quickly how to not only edit and view your images in RAW format but also how to tell if you indeed have the RAW image files.

    Very Helpful Thank you! My reaction is that’s Apple hasn’t made this very intuitive and it takes A LOT of clicks since you have to switch each individual photo to RAW... Anyway glad you gave me the secret handshake on how to do it!

    Excellent Video.. Got lots of knowledge from this. Have a request for making the same type of video for Ipad users. I have a new ipad pro, but when i open RAW images it says , import error.. I have no idea why this comes. If some RAW images do open, it shows blank to me. Not getting any video help for this for ipad. Kindly request you to make a video for ipad users too. Will be very much thankful to you..

    Thanks Tom. Aye, SHOT in RAW, must check that predictive LOL.
    I found one way to do it, but cumbersome. I exported it to desktop selecting JPEG as format, then dragged that into Photos icon in the dock. Opened Photos, two images there one JPEG one RAW. Deleted the RAW as I just wanted JPEG.
    Thanks for replying, very good of you.

    Thank you for this. I have previously exported from Photos to desktop then imported into LightRoom from there. Am I not getting the RAW file into LR? Confused once I'm in LR whether I have the Raw file or not.

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  5 років тому

      Sorry but I don't really use lightroom much so I can't say for sure but what you might try is taking a RAW image (check the extension of the file with a Get Info from the finder) and importing just that one file into lightroom. I suspect that if you import in just this file, then you have the RAW image in LR. If you exported both the original RAW and JPEG and then imported, I don't know what LR does. Actually I would have thought that it would import two images and they won't be paired up. one would be the RAW and the other would be the JPEG.
      I created a video showing all of this which is probably helpful here... ua-cam.com/video/r8PqLySSRIU/v-deo.html

    By version 2 do you mean Photos on Sierra or the current El Capitan v 1.5?

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      Harry Schaefer -Sorry. That's what I was trying say. This video was showing how to edit in RAW using MacOS X 10.12 Sierra's Photos v2. I have another video on my channel from June of 2015 so that one was probably done with Yosemite which then must have been v1. It's more or less the same steps but there were a couple of minor differences.

    I’ve shit in RAW, edited in Photos on MacBook. How do I save in photos as a JOEG so iCloud will share to my iPad and iPhone?

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  6 років тому +1

      "shit in RAW" hahaha.
      So what I've noticed is that my RAW images (when I only have a RAW version) show up in my ios Photos app as RAW (iCloud Photos enabled) in the Photos section (all photos). However if I use iCloud Photo Sharing (where you choose your images you want to share and can invite others...), when I share it, I see in my Shared Album on the Mac that the image is a JPEG (did a Get Info on the image). So it must convert it when you're sharing that way via iCloud Photo Sharing. However I thought it wasn't working because it took forever for it to show up in my shared album on my phone.
      So it looks like it converts it to jpeg to share but a JPEG version doesn't show up under the "Photos" section (all photos) but only in the Shared area.
      That being said, I don't think there's a way to quickly convert RAW to JPEG in Photos (if you for example shoot only RAW and import direct into the Photos app). What you could do, is select them, use Export from the File menu... then drag them back into photos to import them. You will end up with two images now. The original and now the JPEG. It won't stack them like what happens when you shoot both Raw+JPEG and import.
      Hope that helps.

    do you have any ideas why RAW files when opened from photos application turn automatically into jpg when opening in PS? the thing is that I see them in photos as R, and then when I right mouse click and edit with Adobe PS they open not in camera raw, but in PS as jpeg? it used to work well everything, and suddenly I have such a problem..

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  6 років тому

      Hi. You need to export the RAW image file from Photos and then open in Photoshop. The Photos to Photoshop editing... will open the image in Jpeg. Or at least that is my understanding. Let me know if that works for you.

      when I export the raw image to the new folder it opens them in camera raw.
      however, I worked in such a way in photos that the image I liked I marked as favourite, edited them as d=raw. and then from photos I opened them by the right mouse click and edit with in camera raw. and it worked perfectly for a couple of months. this is strange that one day it has just changed..
      I just don't get it.
      thanks anyway :)

    I followed the steps however it still doesn't let me and it say unsupported. Anything I can do?

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  5 років тому

      My guess is that the RAW file type isn't supported by the Photos app or the version of the Photos app you are using. Also make sure you have installed any updates from Apple since they introduce RAW file support for new cameras but might only do so for newer versions of the OS and the Photos app. Outside of that, you can double check that the RAW files are actually there. Towards the end of the video I show you where you can find those files. If it is there, maybe try opening that file in a different image editor to make sure the files are good? First thing would be to make sure that the RAW file is actually there.

    Thanks but I dont see the J icon only a silly little heart ..... and yes, I did shoot jpeg and RAW .
    Damn, why did Apple mess up a great program ......

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  7 років тому

      Depending on which version of photos you're using that little icon would be in different locations. For me on the latest version it shows in the top right corner and the heart (favorite) is in the bottom left. In the older version it shows in the bottom left when viewing all photos in the grid.
      When you open a photo (double click it from the big grid of photos) it then is in the top left. (at least in the latest version.)
      Although I'm assuming you would notice it regardless.
      I would also make sure that there aren't any OS software updates available because I believe when Apple starts supporting a new camera it updates a component in order to support the RAW format or just to even recognize your camera. They might only keep the recent OS update to date though.
      What you can also try is to go into Edit mode and then choose the Image menu and see if you have an option for Use RAW as original or Use JPG as Original. If you see that in the menu and it's active (not greyed out) then you have both image files. If you don't see this here, then I can only assume that when importing into Photos that it is not accepting your RAW images for some reason (maybe not compatible with your camera) or the camera isn't taking the RAW+JPEG. You can check for sure by connecting your camera to your Mac or insert your card into a card reader or into the mac... and view your image files to see if you have two sets of each with the different extensions. If both are there, then it sure seems like Photos is not compatible with your camera.
      If you're still stuck, you might try connecting your camera/card and drag one of your RAW images to your desktop. Then drag it into Photos (into the photos list - the big grid of photos) and see if it imports it.
      Hope that's helpful.

      Hi Tom
      I have version 1.0.1 Photos, perhaps that is the problem .
      You are in moments, no moments to be found in my version of Photos.
      Its not a big problem but........ why so complicated ?? geeeezzz

    how can i delete not jpeg but only law file??

    • @tomn68
      @tomn68  6 років тому

      The only way I know how to do that would be to find them in your Photos Library database and delete them individually. If you're looking to delete many or all of them, this just isn't practical. However I'm not sure I'd recommend it. What ends up happening is that the app will still think they're are there and can cause some issues longer term. For example as a test I went and found one where I had the RAW and the JPG image file. Deleted the raw and went back to photos. It still through it was there. When I select Used RAW as Orginal from the image menu when in Edit mode, it gave me an error that the RAW format was not supported. Probably because Photos was confused. You would think there would be some way to handle that especially if you're not wanting all of the RAW images and because of the amount of space they take up. Moving forward what you might want to do if you keep your camera shooting RAW+Jpeg is instead of automatically having Photos import when you connect your camera, instead find the images on the memory card and manually import only the JPEGS. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.
