My workflow with raw photos in ps was to "Open Image" from Camera Raw then convert to smart object then the go back into Camera Raw from ps to begin my adjustments. You have totally streamlined that process with the one tip. Super helpful! Thanks
i was editing a portrait in lightroom and brought it to photoshop for retouching...and suddenly thought about the advantages of camera raw and its clearly marked icons for brushes and other tools instead of having to create layers in the main photoshop page....and lightroom directly opens raw files to the main workflow page instead of camera raw... so i started searching...and this...this tutorial is the absolute god sent... not only you showed the most important tip of ensuring to make the base image as a smart object..but you also answered another important question i had for a very long time... LIGHTROOM IS FULL OF SLIDERS FOR WHICH A MOUSE IS MORE USEFUL THAN A PEN AND TABLET. ( of course ive got the Loupedeck + which made wonders for my workflow) THEREFORE WHY MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS SWEAR BY A TABLET TO EDIT ? Im sure you didnt intend for this in this tutorial but you have given me a major paradigm shift ....at my entire workflow. i already own a tablet and was struggling to use to edit in lightroom...and some of the portrait photographers and retouchers i met actually told me they use lightroom very sparingly and that kept puzzling me. This tutorial...this actually answers a TON of questions for me. Hereafter i am going to: cull my portraits through bridge import my images to LR Close LR Come back to bridge Open the image i want to edit in PS And carry on with the magic of camera raw Open as smart object in PS Do retouching (Frequency separation and Dodge and Burn) Then export as JPG Come to think of it, there is a good chance that i wont even need to use lightroom anymore!! If you have tips where i can still incorporate lightroom in this workflow...do let me know.. The word thank you is never going to cut it....but for the lack of a better word...THANK YOU SO DAMN MUCH!!!!
This is absolutely helpful and at the same time mindblowing! Worked without adobe camera RAW for so long and i didn't notice the checkbox existed. I'm saved...
Question 4 U. Camera Raw in PS shows my pics as (sharp and clear) BUT when I choose to save them as a JPEG, the (sharp and clearness goes away) leaving me with soft picture. What am I doing WRONG. ugg
Thank you! This was confusing me so much and I couldn't find any other help online that made it as simple as this tutorial! Nice work! Instant subscribe!
Man o man! What a bloody rigmarole to edit a photo!!! Just imagine if you shoot 300-400 in a day-which most people do with digital cameras, it'll take forever editing them!!! You'd of thought in this day and age there would be a way of saving the 'raw' file so its just like a jpeg that you can edit as easily as a jpeg.
Does somebody know, can you work with .raw files directly in photoshop workspace out of CameraRaw ? Like if I apply exposure correction on "raw" smart object, will it be applied like on raw or like on regular jpeg image ?
hey i like you video i have a question i been doing this way for my editing but while im in photoshop the prophoto profile looks good nice and punchy but when i export i know i need to convert to srgb i end up losing my look the saturation i work on disappears any way to compensate? should i work in srgb instead?
Thank you this was great to watch....but when I did exactly as you said, once bringing into PS I can't use certain tools, it says to rasterize the image but there is no option to do that.....something is missed out...
hey so what is the color space i should be working on inside photoshop? pro photo SRGB? when you click on convert profile it said destination space Adobe RGB its kinda confusing
This is incredibly useful, helpful and insightful. And also you have such a great personality. I loved how you spoke and educated the viewers. It was actually enjoyable to watch and listen. Thank you so much for the video. Wow.
Thank you for your instructive video as I'm an introductory-level editor just learning how-to edit my raw files. I enjoyed your snappy pace in this video. Straight-forward, and to the point.
Yes I would like much like many others some further explanation. I start with an image from lightroom that I edit and then transfer straight to photoshop if required to do whatever and when finished transfer it it back to lightroom to finish off and export.
This was a pretty cool short tutorial... I needed to learn this. Sidebar Question - How do I get that "spot healing brush tool"? I would love to learn more about that tool. Thank you kindly.
Loooover YOU!!!! AWESOME its was my main qestion. now i can do more things than before. now i can find new answers on questions like a how edit this is all and work with layers and other other other! Thank you dear!!!!
Hi, I have a doubt, in a photography competition they are asking to submit a raw photo, but I actually clicked my picture in a JPG format. Can I submit the JPG photo ??please reply
Question: I am confused. Converting to a smart object I thought means that you are working on the math of the object, so to speak, and not the image itself. So why go back to Camera Raw to make adjustments? Can you just make those adjustments to the Smart Object and still get back to the original image? What am I missing in the need to revert back to keep the flow proper?
Instead of opening different dialogs to get the info on color space, dimensions etc. just open the 'info' panel and set it up once in the panel options. This way you save time and have all the info handy at all time. ;-)
hi, i used photoshop 2020 and when i import raw file and flat images in photoshop it doesn't look flat its oversaturated and overcontrast but when i open in photo viewer it looks flat. any help pliz...
What exactly do I lose when I rasterise the RAW image in photoshop? Is dynamic range lost? Because a lot of things like content aware fill and all I cannot do on smart objects, right?
Interesting video, thanks. Questions for you, anyone - * I mostly shoot Fujifilm, so I switched from Lightroom over to Capture One Pro as I saw Lightroom RAW conversions left worm-like artefacts in the image, but Capture One Pro did not. I assume they anyone can just use Photoshop on its own for all editing? Also, * As Photoshop is from the same Adobe stable, does it also have those worm-like artefacts? Finally, * I’m not sure why you have to keep jumping back to Camera Raw to change things like WB, why can’t you change that in Photoshop? Any help or advice much appreciated.
What if you want to make changes after you've started retouching with new non-smart layers, such as stamp/clone, patches, or illustrated content. Is the alternative basically not using camera raw, but lots of adjustment layers as your top layer after all your retouching?
Actually from my point, I think ProPhoto RGB is way too huge color space. It cannot be perfomed well in any standard screen, projector, printing, etc. Why you recommend to use that color space while we cannot use some color gamut outside of Adobe RGB, sRGB and certainly CMYK (if we go for printing)? Could you explain it for me please Aaron @phlearn ?
If you allow me to give an Idea here - i guess its the Point that for retouching and develop a Picture you are doing this with the most Infomation you can get - like 16-Bit and the largest Colorspace - to have these space to work with and "walk" with your picture in there. Informations always gets lost, as you say, so why lose them if you don´t have to. greetings & have fun :)
@Tom Wang Michael K is absolutely right. It`s not about being able to perceive and distinguish every colour, but rather being able to tweak/adjust/saturate/hue-change/light-change without ending up with a bad colour gradient. Search for "bad color gradient 8 bit" on google and you`ll understand what I mean.

Hello Aaron nace
How do I save an image in NEF or RAW format in Photoshop after processing
Thank you, Aaron. That was extremely helpful!
Great tips!
when you clicked on lens correction (im referring to the little symbol you clicked at the top)...mine dont have those symbols. How do I get those?
Amazing video! I have been shooting in .jpeg for a year or two and have never touched The RAW setting until I found this video!

Hi, do you know will photo come out good in print if it becomes blurry when zoomed in at the 100%? Thanks
Great tutorial, thank you very much.
Can I adjust the levels while in the RAW editor?
This is incredibly useful, helpful and insightful. And also you have such a great personality. I loved how you spoke and educated the viewers. It was actually enjoyable to watch and listen. Thank you so much for the video. Wow.
Thank you!
Thank you for your instructive video as I'm an introductory-level editor just learning how-to edit my raw files. I enjoyed your snappy pace in this video. Straight-forward, and to the point.
Do you not need to go through lightroom first in order to open multiple raw images as layers in photoshop?
Great info thanks!
Thank you, Aaron. That was extremely helpful! It's these little things that make all the difference, and you are a master at delivering those!
thank you Sooo much, I was going through lightroom and often something goes wrong along the way. You are amazing
Yes I would like much like many others some further explanation. I start with an image from lightroom that I edit and then transfer straight to photoshop if required to do whatever and when finished transfer it it back to lightroom to finish off and export.
hey can i make duplicates? do i loose any quality if i duplicate to do skin correction?
This was a pretty cool short tutorial... I needed to learn this. Sidebar Question - How do I get that "spot healing brush tool"? I would love to learn more about that tool. Thank you kindly.
Awesome thank you (out of curiosity is there any way you can save the image as a raw file instead of tiff? or is that the standard photoshop)
Loooover YOU!!!! AWESOME its was my main qestion. now i can do more things than before. now i can find new answers on questions like a how edit this is all and work with layers and other other other! Thank you dear!!!!
How do I add that tool panel to the right that you're using? If I can work that out, I'm good lol
Thank you!!! You learned me to take my next step in photo.
Nice one! I usually open the raw files as smart objects holding shift on the keyboard, but this one seems to be more flexible.
Hi, I have a doubt, in a photography competition they are asking to submit a raw photo, but I actually clicked my picture in a JPG format. Can I submit the JPG photo ??please reply
Thanks for sharing information. In hurry i shot raw image with iso 1600. Now can i able edit iso. Can I minimize iso to 100? Please help
Thanks, this was very helpful.
Thank U !!! You just saved me a huge headache.. Now, back to editing 😃

same question!
Awesome, thank you. I was wondering how to get back to raw from ps.
Instead of opening different dialogs to get the info on color space, dimensions etc. just open the 'info' panel and set it up once in the panel options.
This way you save time and have all the info handy at all time. ;-)
Once you tick the box at the bottom to make it open as an object does that become the default?
That was super informative! Thank you!

Thanks Aaron! Learned a lot from this once again! Love your content

Isn't it the same to click on filters then Adobe camera raw? I have that doubt
