St Vincent Breaks Down Her Most Iconic Songs | GQ
I loooove her speaking voice. The way she says the words, the tone, everything. Definitely a unintentional ASMR.
/r/unintentionalasmr
oh wrong platform
true asmr
I never noticed it until now but yeah!
may Got Reddit on the mind I see ;)
Excuse me. Im sorry to bother you. But I just have to tell you: I love your voice.
annie clark is a living legend
On world of zombies (idiocracy) maybe .
A Guitar Godess. She is hands down our generations answer to Bowie and Prince.
I concur
Annie is severely unrecognized unfortunately. her skill in musicianship as well as song writing are unmatched, and her latest record shows her versatility and ability to write pop music
This! I kinda miss the strange mercy vibes.
Critically acclaimed, Grammy winner, hugely respected and recognized among her peers... Maybe if you're talking about the general public, but it was a wise person that once said: "The masses are asses."
Masseduction does have grammy nomination. "her skill in musicianship as well as song writing are unmatched" I really doubt that... she is one of my favourite artists... but this is just bold statement.
LOL something tells me that you don't understand the definition of the word "unmatched"
Her style of music doesn't reach or interest guitar people. I didn't know she was a guitar God until very recently. Have complete respect for her in every way but have to admit can only listen to a couple songs in a row. It's just not aimed at my demographic. One of the things that amazes me about her and I think about it every live video. That audience probably 35% know another guitarist
"Los Ageless" is such a brilliant title.
Annie is vague about her song meanings, which i like. She doesn't want to explain them too much.
exactly - it would take away the magic some of these songs harness
But at the same time i get what she means with each song
I like the way Annie speaks about and acknowledges Cara’s contribution to her music despite them having broken up
Nobody ever talks about Black Rainbow! Her eerest and most beautiful song! That ending is a gateway to heaven through a dark forest
So true!!!
I agree
Totally. What a track. Disney gone dark.
was hoping for more Actor and Strange Mercy tracks.
Zay Ton Agreed. Actor is by far her best album in my opinion.
I would have included Psychopath, now there's a solid chorus.
Strange Mercy is her best in my opinion but I think she is yet to have a bad album
Liam Templeton For me it’s Strange Mercy but Actor is a close second
For me it's either Marry Me or her self-titled album... can't choose
'Most Iconic Songs' but doesn't include Digital Witness?
There's no such thing as an iconic song. An icon is a visual symbol. So music, by definition, cannot be iconic.
@@elverdaderojavier that's just one definition the definition used here is "something that is deserving of veneration"
Also language is a fluid thing even if it doesn't obey the exact definition its proper
elverdaderojavier by that reasoning there should be no such thing as “blue notes” either, and yet here I am listening to B B King while enjoying some dark beer.
elverdaderojavier you got told
@@mrs.featherbottom5901 Are you a wearer of tinted shades? I've never come across a blue beer.
Love love love St. Vincent and getting to hear her shed light on these songs was wonderful. But c’mon, GQ - wish you had done your research and selected her actual “most iconic” songs rather than singles off her latest album(s).
Amber Forrest yes yes yes yes! I was about to comment that
This video covers all the self titled songs. That whole album is iconic if you accept the word at all.
ua-cam.com/video/gE1cjZ13uG4/v-deo.html
seems to be GQ's mo when it comes to this series
You are right. It gives it a certain feeling of doing an interview first and then making up a headline afterwards for more clicks. Though artists definitely tend to want to talk about their more recent efforts anyway. Either way, love to see Annie talk about her songs.
I've always wanted her to explain Johnny a little bit. So compelling. I love her.
"Marry Me" is one her most underrated album. Before the switch up.
I know riiight, Paris is burning and Landmines are the best songs on the album imo
Sofía ohh! Solid. For me it's "What me worry?" "Humans Racing" "Land mines" and "Now Now (:
I fell in love with her music over Marry Me. My favourite is "All My Stars Aligned", but the moment that had me locked was "I'll be so good to you / You won't realize I'm gone" in "Marry Me". How amazing she was even before all the guitars kicked in ❤️
Intimacy at its best.
Can someone explain this “switch up”?
I LOVE EVERYTHING THIS WOMAN IS AND IS ABOUT.
I wish more people could experience the joy of being a St. Vincent's fan because she is just amazing in many ways.
This is how you talk about your music, she’s not telling you how to think about the song, but merely describing a part of her personal connection with the music.
she's so well-spoken, I love her.
Ive been listening to her since her eponymous album. I think were gonna look back on her as a David Bowie-esque artist. Very talented and I think she’ll be very influential over time
So glad she mentioned The Bed. I adore that song and the orchestration on it.
I have absolutely no idea what The Bed is about. But it is a strange little song that I never tire off. "We need a chalk outline if you can".
I find her so insanely fascinating. She’s so under rated
Always enamored with what she has to say about her music, other peoples music… anything really. She’s got this total, comprehensive thought on everything. Her point of view is a beautiful mixture of structure and fluidity. You would never see any other musician mention Steely Dan and Kaye West in the same interview. Aka I love her and will always be a huge fan.
I suggest you look into more rap artists/producers then Lol. Kid Cudi introduced me to St. Vincent on a song called Maniac....samples her and even had a performance with her on some tv show. i agree witheverything else though :)
She seems so delicate and powerful.
5:51 I would've NEVER guessed it was someone other than annie singing those lines in the song, much less cara delevigne :)
Seems like the person in charge of picking the songs only listened to her last album..... WACK
Yeah, I love some of the newer songs, but to call them her "most iconic"... nah.
I think they just took some of the most viewed/played ones
dood for real. I was cursing the screen throughout da whole video
She has an ear for music that is impressive and satisfying to witness. I love how many of her interviews are explorations of her art. So many artists have interviews about nothing. So it is exciting to get the insight into her music that I so often crave when I hear songs that speak to me.
I wish she had covered "Prince Johnny" or "Strange Mercy", but I still love this interview.
a wholeheartedly thank you for masseduction, legend
"Squirrel that away for a song."
I LOVE that quote. ❤️
She is easily one of my favorite modern artists. There really aren't as many icons in the mainstream today that know music so intimately and are as thoughtful in their creation to be able to have such a diverse range. Not to mention her lyricism is on point. No glits or glamour. Her words are just pensive and deep and thought-provoking. The Bed is also one of my favorite songs by her. Actor and Marry Me both have so many gems that aren't played as much. Love love love St. Vincent.
Classy, Beautiful, Intelligent, and Creative as always.
Most iconic song for me is Chloe in the afternoon, but did love this
"St Vincent breaks down her latest album"
The fact that Tuck & Patti are her aunt & uncle...so awesome. Makes me happier than it should for some reason...
DudeDah they’re awesome. I saw her on the Masseduction tour and they were the opening act and full of love and the most amazing technical musical ability paired with pure passion. Stunning!
@@principetuna Yeah their version of "Time After Time" is a tear-jerker. Long time fan...
I'm glad she explained that her aunt sang on the song. Explains some of the other voices in some of the songs for her most recent album.
She seems so old and so young at the same time
i love her so much, she’s such an underrated mastermind of music. wish she got more attention
I love that she was on her way to Poland and wrote Smoking Section which is sad asf bc I actually live here and sometimes I feel like Im living in a mess full of depressed people so um- RELATABLE
A very gifted woman, I would like to see her in film as an actress
Her hands are so pretty
Love this woman. ❤️
I had the lovely chance of meeting Annie and sitting in on an interview my boss did with her. she is the kindest and most badass person, and so intelligent about music! she takes her profession seriously and I think it shows here
I absolutely love when artists compare music to colors. When she called her song "pastel" I gasped.
I could listen to Annie talk all day
Seriously she's really good at communicating. She can just start talking and she'll just arrive on things.
Hang On Me is one of the best tracks she's done.
I just wish they had asked about tracks on other albums.
Two days ago I listened to her whole discography. How convenient 😃
Great interview by Annie's head and hands ;)
I'm a huge St. Vincent fan but tbh I don't think of half of these "iconic songs" when I think of her. I really would've loved to hear her talk about some tracks on Actor or St. Vincent.
Annie, you are the best!
Broh I knwo im not that high but is her head floating
Ha ha. The dark room and the black top. A bit like the Cruel grave. Or the end of the Slow Disco video.
@@anneother6224 alrigjt im stone cold sober now. Her head is definitely floating. I'm not crazy.
@@Gore171459 True
Our lovely queen.
She's so smart, beautiful and talented❤️
she's so amazing
Absolutely an astonishing talent. Have followed her ever since a Guitar Player article drawing attention to her guitar skills. But what a singer as well. She also obviously possesses an enormous intellect. Plus she's very pretty! It all comes together. There are many great songs in her catalogue but the one that comes closest to melting me down is "All My Stars Aligned." Like her, just beautiful!
love her
That feeling you get when you realize you're in the presence of a genius
Digital Witness is easily more iconic than 90% of these songs
she’s so real i love it
Los Angeles is an amazing world. I was born and raised here, and hasn't ceased to amaze me.
I love her. Literally.
Love this woman
9:24 why aint nobody talking about this run? beautiful
I just love this woman!! Masseduction is probably my favourit album ever
Just hearing her speak is amazing
"The Bed" is a legendary song.
Actor is incredibly underrated!!
What a legend and inspiration!
I love her so much
wow i love her so much
i love listening to her talk
The Bed and The Party are my two favorite songs. I see you Annie.
Cruel, Prince Johnny, Birth in Reverse, Savior, Slow Disco, Dancing with a Ghost, Who and Teenage Talk
gorgeous lady
I’m so in love with her that’s killing me.
12:03
I really identify with the waking up with melodies in your head. That happens to me all the time.
I love her so much.
I don't listen to her much but this was an awesome video I could listen to her talking about paint dry
😊love her
How can you say these are her most iconic songs? You overlooked some amazing songs. Amazing albums actually. My favorite song is The Party.
I like how each artist is different based on how they are inspired
Annie is a national treasure.
This is the most well spoken woman I’ve ever heard
Brilliant woman
This woman is such an icon. I didn't know Taylor Swift had a finger on the pop version of Slow Disco!!! This song is such a masterpiece.
Living with the ghost of Your self and all your hero's 💓 omg 😭
What a great talent.
Omg, I cracked up....Sweden to Poland...You are amazing
Annie killing it!
Annie, " Your living with the Ghosts of yourself and all your hero's " is the makings of a great song too.
So we have Taylor Swift to thank for Fast Slow Disco
Jasper Paolo I don’t want to but thanks, Taylor..
what about roslyn with bon iver 😩
That song means the world to me!!!! I never get tired to hear Roslyn!!!!
@@alancastillo3821 it's one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME. so incredible
Omg that is my favorite song 😩
@@bluegirl3246 one of my favourite of all time too, what a song!!!
I love that she mentioned Showbiz Kids- never thought she’d be a Steely Dan fan
my fantasy, my precious!
I wish she spoke about Prince Johnny and The Sequel 😩💕
What a legend!!
I found it kind of strange, that she is so sure about Poland not being vacation country. Well, we have nice spaces to see here, so feel welcome and visit.
I never understood why Poland often gets an overlooked or even stereotypical reputation. Unless somewhere is in an active conflict and dangerous at that moment, I'd be willing to visit literally anywhere... Culture, learning, and sight seeing. :)
I just realized I love the b-sides.. The stuff people skip past❤
I love you Queen!!!
GQ: Anything close to 10 years or older can't be iconic. Albums that came out in the last two years, now thats ICONIC!!
GQ look up the definition of iconic. You can't call a movie that came out last year a classic.
She is so,so beautifull
Fascinating person.
"so you grew up in a musical family?' 'no!' haha, St Vincent's mother gave my friend music lessons at berklee
Her mom teaches at Berklee?
Annie and her fake humility. Sigh.
Listing a few great songs of hers that weren't here
Digital Witness
Rattlesnake
Prince Johnny
Huey Newton
Strange Mercy
Champagne Year
Year of the Tiger
Dilletante
The Strangers
Laughing with a mouth of blood
The Bed
The Party
Just the Same but Brand New
Human Racing
bonus mention of her cover of I dig a Pony
Also my fav album is probably Strange Mercy or Actor
really gonna leave us hanging on young lover 😭 also i wish she could have talked about actor more!
