Love her choosing the random film at the end, such a great idea!
can't remember who, but someone else started it a few videos back
I remember Molly Ringwald did it last. This should be tradition.
Molly Ringwald did that and now St. Vincent! (maybe someone else has as well?) Anyways, everyone should do that at the end!
pretty sure Dan Levy did it too but I’m not sure
@@thirdegreesmirk8838Pauline Chalamet is the first person I remember doing it
Nearly perfect freeze frame at 1:31
In the closet, the filmmakers tell stories and the musicians just go full melodrama... as the gods intended.🙌🔥
fuck yeah her music is so cinematic. The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant is exactly like her first album.
Going to put that on later with that in mind.
The bitter tears of petra von kant is so st vincent coded
did y’all listen to “all born screaming” yet? it’s amazing! I think my favorite St. Vincent album now, that first listen just gobsmacked me. not surprising in the slightest that Annie Clark is a cinephile with taste and has such distinct stories & connections with film
“To Die For” is one of those quintessential 90’s indie-boom movies that is so subversive and yet so expertly made that it’s hard to imagine anything like it being made today.
I just watched it after it's recent release and it felt a bit tame and obvious.
I'll have to check it out.
I'm a HUGE Gregg Araki fan.....The Doom Generation and Nowhere are perfect.
There's something I love about a certain time of indie subversive weirdo movies from the 90s....
I've never even heard of To Die For tho.
Annie is a absolute diamond.
she's the epitome of privately educated white privilege...hardly the struggling artist with a multi millionaire Daddy hiding in the wings.
She should introduce herself as Annie. A little off-putting that she introduces herself as St. Vincent lol
...of the night
@@snicker576 Daddy works in "Corporate Tax Administration" in other words he's very very very rich....Poor little Annie, the struggle was so real!
@@snicker576 Pretentious, for real.
I'm absolutely SHOCKED that she did not pick up a David Lynch title, if for no other reason just to talk about it. She's a big fan.
I get it, but I'm glad she chose Guy Maddin.
That's probably why since she was taking stuff that she didn't already have. If she's a big fan of Lynch then it stands to reason that she probably already owns his stuff. Especially if she used to shop at Kim's back when it was still on St. Mark's Place.
These videos are condensed heavily. I have noticed in several closet videos that the person choosing will have 2-3 films in their hand that they didn't talk about.
Criterion probably does it for accessibility which is a shame because I would happily watch 30+ minute Criterion haul videos.
@@caseyaulbach7693 that’s a good point. We should all leave comments asking for the videos to be longer if possible. It’ll save them editing time
@@caseyaulbach7693If they've got something to say about the films they picked, I really think we ought to hear it - otherwise cutting is fine, the picks aren't interesting in and of themselves.
So, I'll be honest. I'm not big into music, so I'd never hear of St Vincent until this video. But now I'm watching music videos on her channel and goddamn, I'm digging it.
You can feel her picks in all of her music and she's releasing a new album so I can't wait to see the world she'll bring next
Welcome to the club!
she's amazing! a total original! welcome.
The Party is one of my favorites. Worth listening to if you haven't.
I feel like everyone who visits the closet should do one pick like she did at the end. Just spin around and point to a random film on the shelf and take it. Let random chance pick just one movie for you. What a genuinely great idea.
Every guest should be asked to do a "blind buy choice" as their final pick.
That's how you break out of your comfort zone and discover something new.
Love her music. This is the Criterion closet cross-over I didn't ask for but I definitely needed!
Amazing picks, great energy to St, Vincent.
Loved her David Byrne collabs!
Dazed & Confused is one of those films where I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't love it. It's so much fun. The Bitter Tears Of Petra von Kant is far & away my favourite Fassbinder, it's so good.
To Die For needs a resurgence.
It’d click SO much with audiences today!!!
God that’s such a great movie.
Weak and disappointing.
It is relevant af
Oooh, if she had just chosen Todd Haynes’s “Safe,” it would’ve been perfect along Waters, Almodóvar, Fassbinder and Gus Van Sant!
Such a good film!
Or anything with Isabell Huppert
In was also screaming todd haynes!
@@jeranjed and Haneke
Or Velvet Goldmine...
I could listen to Annie talk until the end of time. It's the passion and openness to her heart and soul. Plus she's just so damn cute.
Absolutely perfect picks.
Damaged people are fascinating... what a mundane yet unchaotic world it would be without them.
I remember seeing her when she had curly hair...supporting The National. She's so good
I adore how when she mentions Paranoid by Black Sabbath, she clearly unconsciously air guitars the main riff
"Women on the Verge..." is a fantastic pick.
Fabulous! Wonderful choices, knew she'd go for those ❤ great idea of the random pick at the end, agree it should be a regular fixture 😅
To Die For is a masterpiece ❤️
St Vincent is an island in the Caribbean and it appears a rather vampiric looking woman! :D
The “blind pick” at the end is such a good idea
Yay new films ill check out! I loved Chloe in the afternoon, she has great taste.
She’s just all around Badass/cool
Big W on the Akerman boxset
St Vincent is so cool! I love her enthusiasm and physicallness!!!!!✌️❤️
Great pics! Hope this means we will get "The Nowhere Inn" in the collection!
To Die For and Nicole Kidman's tremendous performance do not get enough attention! Thanks for showing some love!👏
so much respect for picking Trainspotting and Dazed & Confused, two of my all time faves
When St. Vincent chooses and describes her feels on To Die For beginning at 1:58, I felt that. LOL!!!
St vincent in the criterion collection? What a dream come true!
i love you so much annie clark
Always class 👏🏽
What a great surprise pick with Diamonds of the Night! Great choices overall too
Ok, I haven’t seen ANY of these. I will watch them ALL.
Fifteen years ago, she signed my CDs commenting on how similar we are in terms of age. The autographs reflect this conversation =D
Dazed & Confused! A forever re watchable.
Good choices…
Impeccable taste as expected ! Love her!
Surrounded by masterpieces! The pressure the pressure!!
She is ADORABLE!
Female trouble is a W
Great collection ❤
She'll love "Diamonds of The Night" for sure :)), cause I freaking love it ^^!!!
Thank you fate! Diamonds of the Night needs to be talked about more.
I worship this woman ❤ (and her taste in film)
So much credit where it’s due here. I would’ve taken over that entire closet.
great picks, but I wish she didn't pretend like she didn't know where "The Bitter Tears..." was at the shelf ;)
I was so hoping that she'd pick Harold & Maude, BUT the choices she made were perfect.
Brand Upon The Brain! Excellent choice, and reminds me that it's been a while since I've seen it.
Diamonds of the night is such a good blind pick. Unbelievable film
St. Vicent needs to be in movies, just that kind of face that could literally do anything.
Wow, looked up trailer for Diamonds of the night. It looks like a must see.
As a straight man, I agree with many of her choices, hahaha!! Great films are great films. The best part of the closet is when people pick films that should be rewatched and remembered, like "To Die For". I could never do the blind pick, I'm too much of a control freak, lol!!
St. Vincent. Beautiful.
I am still waiting for criterion to release "Weekend at Bernies". So amazing. LOL. But really. I love that film. McCarthy surprised me on that one.
I don't remember her ever referring to herself as St. Vincent, usually she says Annie.
The last song in Dazed is "Slow Ride" by Foghat, if I'm remembering this correctly.
This was a fun one. Some films I have not seen, so I will have to check them out.
Love her energy
It makes me anxious and uncomfortable. Crazy eyes out in full force
@@snicker576 she's demented, but her unhinged energy speaks to typical viewers of this channel so shes almost universally praised, which is kind of funny to be fair. W're living in a world where people like her rule the thinking of the hoi polloi
@@snicker576is it your job to comment weird things relentlessly about annie like 😭😭 if someone being enthusiastic and happy makes you feel anxious maybe you should try therapy because that is not normal! ❤
@@claraclonk It's not my job, just a hobby
Amazing!
st vincent: as a 50 year old gay man, i...
I remember Kim's Video. What a classic place to find obscure stuff before the internet.
This is my dream woman personality and looks
You're obviously a lesbian!
Fassbinder is just beyond words. Its crime he's only known in parts of modern Germany and among film snobs. You have to watch his entire catalog at least once in your life. Obviously St.Vincent knows movies, I wasn't even a little surprised.
It's incredible that someone with such a chaotic personal life made masterpiece after masterpiece year after year
@@marknewbold2583 There's something about the "troubled" artist, whether you're talking about Rainer or Annie
pedro Almodovar is a genius. also every video I seen so far on this channel nobody picks up Brazil.
you know who really is a genius? the guy who made my coffee today, I mean if we're going to throw around the word genius like toilette paper to Almodovar, then my barista is also a genius
@@juanaltredo2974 Wow, dude. Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?
@@NickPiers I hope nobody, I ate them with such force and delight!
Great video 😊
The composure of the people who get to go into the criterion closet. I'd lose my shit and have a panic attack.
Diamonds Of The Night - a pretty good random pick.
Great..
I love this woman
a real talent and very charming/funny to boot.
Sweet Dee needs to do a take on this.
It’d be cool if @criterion to invite me, a normal dedicated lover of film, into the Criterion Closet for a rummage and video. Think about it, Criterion!
Oh, Diamonds of the Night. It's a Czechoslovak movie and it's very trippy.
Utterly charmed.
wow seeing Annie starstruck is uncommon bc that's how i look at her most of the times
Omg I absolutely love her
THE TASSSSTEEEEE!!!!
She rules, absolute Queen
Shut it, Jameel!
What in the "Orphan cosplay"?!
A Czech New Wave classic! She capped it off with Jan Němec's Shadows of the Night from 1964.
Nailed it.
legendary.
Brand Upon the Brain! In the bag! Love Guy Maddin...
Never heard of her before. What genre of music does she do?
My girl❤ 🎵
Diamonds of the night is so beautiful and harrowing
I second that comment!
♥️✨
Tuesday’s gone plays when the party is dying. Slow ride by foghat plays as they ride into the sun! Inexcusable!
I am really happy that someone likes Diamonds Of The Night.
St. Vincent is a type of person that I would love to hang out in a Barnes and Nobles store.
I guess you didn't watch the video; she closes her eyes and picks a movie at random, and "Diamonds Of The Night" is what she gets.
Either way, it’s a great film.
Her Dazed and Confused description is brilliant. And the Kim's in the East Village reference earlier in the video...memories. Annie rules.
Never realised how much she looks like Lea seydoux wow
To Die For, great pick! Plus the rest!
Diamonds of the night is a *great* random choice.
❤🔥
