Random compliment but she’s so good at communication. Talking, singing, whatever. She has clear understandable metaphors and humor that keeps her from ever coming across cocky despite the fact that she’s talking about how talented she is.

He pissed off Quentin Tarantino as well. His tactic is to insult his guests into saying anything that will make a headline, then he sells the interview to the highest bidder. He performed a real hatchet job on Michael Jackson as well - this interviewer is trash . Luckily for us, Annie Clark makes even trash beautiful.

gregory hoover no his tactic is not to insult his guests it's actually to ask really heavy questions it's just too bad he's really bad at discerning them to be appropriate as opposed to insults

@@YWFilmProductions I don't know if you're serious or just one of those guys who just like to pick arguments with people in the Internet, but I think you need to look further into this interviewer. Quintin exposed him for what he does right in the middle of an interview. He was trying to goad Tarentino into a defense of violence in his films with the who ole "what do you say to people who suggest your films promote violence actions from their viewer? question. We've all heard the question asked and answered by Tarentino 1000 times so the guy was just trying to get a reaction of of him that would be of commercial value to the interviewer. Here, I'll let Tarantino explain it in his own words ua-cam.com/video/GrsJDy8VjZk/v-deo.html
Take note that when the interviewer's tactivc backfired, he came back with an even more insulting quest6ion and asked if the director is getter better or worse as a director based upon his aging. Come on! That's not insulting while interviewing a director at the primier of his new movie?

All these haters! She's talking about disrupting the system by having personal power and agency as a woman in music - I don't know if you all have ever been in bands with woman in music, but it is a hard road, and even some of the most successful women in music still don't have personal agency creatively. It is a greater victory in some ways to have agency as a women in music than to be famous. Within the context of the music industry, she is disrupting a very gendered system - instead of playing acoustic guitar, singing love songs, and looking pretty, as women are expected to do, she rips a fuzz guitar, often wears smeared makeup and weird bodysuits, and sings about much more nuanced and personal topics. She is saying that an identity based solely upon where one's gender, race, etc. fits in society is inherently false and limiting, which is true. Perhaps ya'll are so mad because you can't face up to your own identity being contrived and externally given instead of internally chosen.

Disrupting what system exactly? Women have always been in the music industry...... there's always been strong women who defied being simply being pretty faces or sexy bodies...... think back to Betty Davis (Miles Davis's wife), the slits, sousxie sue, Madaonna, Kate bush...... dig a little deeper and you'll find even more artistically accomplished, uncompromising women who never felt the need to fit stereotypes 'demanded' by men (such as Kathleen hanna)! Her concept of 'power' is utter nonsense and confused sounding, despite being 'eloquently' put! By the way, I'm a fan of her music...... but this was nothing more than a collection of soundbites directed at those people (her fans, the converted) too afraid or too insecure in themselves to do what she's doing..... to make those same people who are buying into her creative vision thus helping make her rich and relevant by buying her music and the message that comes with it......

No, I most certainly do not mean to say that you must agree with me; to be perfectly frank, I think Ms. Clark is wrong here about gender being fluid. The difference is that I a) don't let her answer to a question like that interfere with my enjoyment of her music and b) don't compare differences of belief to deadly diseases in need of eradication.

I don't even know what to say. There's so much about everything she says here that feels like an alternate version of myself split off at some point to become her, and say and sing and shred it all for our other alternate selves to get chills and shiver to the tuning fork... It all resonates with me like a giant brass bell in a cavern temple.

Love St. Vincent. She actually reminds me of Jacques Brel in the way she takes cliches and, by her artistry point of view and techniques (here poppier art punk tradition), she gives it a totally original approach. For example, her acustic version of Savior: what's more easy and predictable than an acoustic piano version of a sexy soft pop song? But she used a prepared piano, and turned it an almost "school music" piece. Not only there: I actually din't get why she was so good, until I saw a video and realised that the "riff" was pretty hard (with a clean guitar, if you're into it...); of course, soloing is kinda Cobain, something I love, even more in the context of danceable synths, but it's the root passage wich gave it's true value to the song, as I'm programmed for solos (also for guitar players...)
She also takes the classic formula of being the contrary of everybody else, untill she IS the exception to all rock guitarrist: from her genre (don't get me wrong, just saying that in guitar rock female people never could be themselves, just a caracter, a fantasy of something greater than any men or anywoman, just as Santa Teresa or Jean d'Arc in a jacket and jeans: more of a character, not the true essential person) wich she analyses by mocking of the stereotypes of woman: from the desesperate housewife, to the insecure mouse obssesed with social media, to the MILF in femme fatale mode, who can't be your savior, nor your mother, but kinda acepts the hard and unconfortable roles, mostly, as alwys do the character, because she is a cliche, and not her true self...not even I understand what is happening: really, it's a trully complex concept art, in wich her creativity comes from the negation of what should be by society, via incarnate as a hard joke those things that she never will totally be (and maybe is, but in a healty proportion, in different to St. Vincent).
Because Anne Clark gives interviews as herself and as her character: when she is herself...she is a common, interesant person, but nothing more. When is st. Vincent, she either looks to the floor and speaks low and slowly, kinda scared, or act all seductive and misterious, depending on what character relies under the empty glass of her paronim (actually I'm not sure of this point because this is the first interview I've seen, but that of a big horse...she actually looked a bit unconfortable sayin that, I kinda doubth of her saying something like that in a common day...and if I'm wrong...I actually don't care, the Idea sounds cool and this is not a science manual and I'm not a conserned thinker...)
Wich in fact also is a symbol of how empty a person obssesed with apparences actually is.
Sorry for my bad english; no apologise hier...nainnainnain....

Кэтрин Голумбовская Agreed. St. Vincent is sort of stuck in a rut where she is creating a certain type of commercial somewhat edgy music over and over. I'd like to hear her take some real risks and do long instrumental things or symphonies or go way noisier or acoustic. I wonder what she would sound like recording with Eno. Might give them both a needed jolt. Still like her. She's running a big risk of boring people like Bowie did from 1982 on. Maybe we expect too much of our geniuses.

The one thing you can clock annie on is that she participates in capitalism as we all do living in a capitalist country. When Trump and neo nazi's/ far right politics being normalized and "anti-SJW"/"Anti-PC" sentiments are gaining more popularity, what system exactly supports her narrative?

Yes, the system that's fucking up the world created this narrative for people like her and low IQ's like Annie Clark repeat it to profit from other low IQ's who are so stupid they can't understand her argument lacks all sorts of logic. Smart people unfortunately have to share the world with incredibly dumb people like Annie Clark. Gender isn't fluid by any meanings. I want you to show me a single human that can fluid their chromosomes. There's only 2 genders, female and male, simple as that. People can be heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual. Fluid is nothing but bisexual, which by the way this woman saying she is fluid is a lesbian, not even bisexual. You don't need to be a dumb asshole to understand gender isn't a construct but what is socially acceptable is indeed cultural and that has absolutely NOTHING to do with gender or even sexuality.

What a profound, thoughtful human. We really are changing the world, or at least America, for the much, much better. I'm 65, and trust me, 2023 is a profoundly better time than any year in human history. St. Vincent is strong evidence to support that. Listen to her, and the years that follow will be better still.

She is wonderful, clever an amazing guitar player and composer . Her performances and videos are minimalist but really fresh with a little touch of "break the rules", that I like. The only thing that I don´t like in this interview is the use of "empowered" word; be what you want to be That´s the point.

Rather belatedly found Sufjan Stevens by way of my St Vincent fandom. Reading a review in the Guardian (I know) I found this referring to his song For The Widows In Paradise:
“I noticed there were all these single mothers and women and grandmothers, but there weren’t any men,” he once told an audience, “and so I had sort of devised a story in my mind that they had all died in the war and that the women were all widows. But they were really a very happy and optimistic community and they all seemed to be working together, and it was, like, women of the world take over.”
Fear the Future dudes. Or maybe not.

" “I noticed there were all these single mothers and women and grandmothers, but there weren’t any men,”
The men were at home mowing the lawn, cleaning the storm drains, re-tiling the roof, installing the air conditioner, re-glazing the porch windows, building the sun deck, changing the fuses, replacing the motherboard, caulking the bathroom, re-wiring the play room, unclogging the toilet and pouring the cement for the patio... except for the ones who were running the sound and lighting for Surfjan's concert.

DISCOGOTHTHEJAZZFAN Ha ha! We seem fated to disagree despite (or possibly because of) our common ancestry. I thought of you the other day when I found on Esperanza Spalding's website: "drawing, at times, from wellsprings as disparate as Cream to Shostakovich to St. Vincent, Emily’s D+Evolution is a kaleidoscopic project; raw, honest, luminous". Oh, I seem to be straying from the point. But then I am quite happy to take leaves out of your book. Just not the whole story.

Pff this woman is stunning on every imaginable level. And so funny that she, without being asked directly not just admits that one third of her notes are random and she turns that into empowerment with a disarming smile. I have used this trick if you want to call it that and it annoyed me for a pretty long time. being a guitar dyslectic I have bent that annoying feeling into something you can actually lean into as long as its a really good song in wich one adapts this style. Chapeau!

The whole gender fluidity thing is not independent of preexisting assumptions. Assumptions is for lack of a better word because some truly have blind faith while others have more reason than faith for their worldview. You can believe homosexuality is wrong, but if you hate gay people themselves for it, then you are just as bad.

I make a point in avoiding cliches and I will say that while I like part of her music, her ideology is nowadays THE mainstream. There is nothing alternative or courageous in proclaiming that gender is fluid. Quite the opposite, tbh.
Do you want to experiment about "the system"? Try and write a twitter arguing that male and female are objectively distinct, and see what happens.
