Comparing the LT77 with an R380 - how to tell them apart

- I am often asked what is the difference with the LT77 or R380 when I want to by one?
Well, here is an opportunity to see them side by side
As UA-cam have moved the goals to become monetized, and I have a niche channel, funding is never going to happen, so I have set up a Patreon as I would like to get a higher speed upload, which means I get post more videos, AND in 1080
Takes me about 2.5 hours to upload a 15 minutes at the moment.
I will be giving credits to my supporters at the end of my videos from now on. I am very grateful to one and all!

Very helpful video, thanks 👍
I saw a Ford 300E Sedan Delivery with a Volkswagen 16v under the hood. When I asked about the transmission, the guy who built it told me it used a Rover LT77 transmission because it’s stronger than the Ford Type 9.
Great video again Mike! I've recently fitted a short shift kit to my R380. My other car is a 1966 Volvo Amazon so I'm used to long slightly vague gear sticks. However the kit has improved the feel of gear changes a great deal. It's no racing box but I feel the improvement was worth it!
Maybe I should give one a go!?
When you see a lot of gearboxes opened up you see that, the LR transmission was a good design, but for Defender use, they should have gone back to the drawing board and make the R380 50% bigger
Smooth shift is one thing - fast is another!
Mike
Congratulations on reaching a 1000 subs. Have enjoyed all your videos and look forward to many more to come. My 90 (04) is going in for a job on the steering pump be interested to see you working on one. Again thanks Mike. From West Oxford. Uk.

Hi mike
Just checked back and you have done them, Got memory of a goldfish. Just revisited them. Many thanks.
Terry
No problem Terry - always open to suggestions for overhauls IF I have the units on hand
Mike
Thanks Terry!
Been a very quiet winter here, hence all the videos, but now jobs are coming in, it gives me an opportunity to film real time jobs/problems

My experience wrestling with a 200tdi/LT77 110 was that the gearbox was much harder to shift than an R380 and that the pattern (with reverse up and left) not so convenient. The one I drove also like to stay in reverse once there (probably just that unit)
I am amused by the "slick-shift" offered for the R380. I have two R390s- one in my TD5 D2 and one in my 300tdi Defender, and both shift beautifully using just two fingers. I can't imagine wanting anything "slicker"
the LT77 shift is common on trucks etc for faster changes from 1st to reverse for manoeuvring, the R380 is common with cars
Hi, just watching you videos, absolutely brilliant. Excellent technical content and information. I have one question. Can I fit s discovery 2 R380 and it's 300tdi engine to my 110 land rover. That currently has a V8. I have heard I can use the gearbox and change the top to match defender tunnels. Plus engine mount. That quite s bit of info. Thank you again
Nope - the R380 V8 box has a longer primary motion shaft (input shaft) - would need rebuilding to a 300Tdi defender box - expensive, so might as well get an R380 for the defender 300 Tdi
Hi Mike, I appreciate your informative an straight forward vids very much. Could you tell, whether the "stumpy" bellhousing of the conversion kit will fit to a Lt77 as well? Perhaps with some minor modifications ( e.g. drilling for a different bolt pattern at the gearbox side)?
I am not sure if the gearbox input shaft would be too long or short - the R380 had a stumpy shaft specifically for the short bell housing
@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks a lot for the quick response. Perhaps, I have to try, whether a simple cut will do the job (at least 30mm, which is the difference in length of the two bellhousings, I guess) or looking for a shorter replacement shaft.
Have you any vids on theLT95, specifically transfer case repairs? Cheers in advance.
No - I never see them here
@@BritannicaRestorations I will get mine posted to you by christmas time... hate for you to miss out on the wonders of the LT95A.....:)
Working with a completely stripped down Series III. Waiting for the block to come back from the shop for reassembly. Would love to mate an R380 to the 2.25L along with keeping the series transfer case. Is Ashcroft the only place to get a stubby R380?
Seems to be
Hi Mike, great video again. What do you think about durability and reliability. Is the R380 that way far better than the Lt77? We contemplate a swap of the genuine LT76 suffix D for the R380 with stubby box, primarily for noise reduction and matching the 83kW of the 200TDi in our Series 3 better than the LT76 does ( besides this, after 10 thousands miles, no problem at all). I bought an used LT77 gearbox with attached LT230 some years ago (out of a 90 petrol with low milage, as the vendor told me). I am not quite sure, whether the short bellhousing is the same, which was used for the "genuine" swap on Defenders or if there is another one, which is even shorter ( which means, that the shaft should be shorter, too). Going for the R380, I consider to buy the Ashcroft one. But after GB said good-bye to the EU, now toll and tax will shoot the costs for me on top of a budget, where I ask myself, whether it is really worthwhile, doing such an investment. What do you think about this? Heinz
This gets confusing as the short bell housing was for the Defender to retrofit the R380 in place of the LT77 which was shorter
In a series you can bolt the LT77 to the 200Tdi and get an adaptor from Ashcroft to bolt the LT77 to the series transfer case - you have to remember the series had part time 4x4, as the universal joints in the front swivels were not suitable for full time 4x4
@@BritannicaRestorations Hi Mike, thanks for the quick response. I understand, that the "short bellhousing" is shorter than the (short) bellhousing of a LT77 Defender application. As the LT77 is - I guess - longer than the Series LT76, I wonder, whether the shorter bellhousing of the Defender conversion kit would 1. fit to the LT77 and 2. compensate the difference in length between LT76 and LT77. If this is the case, that would be my preferred way for the gearbox swap as the transfer box and propshafts don't need any reposition work. Never heard of that a configuration before. Would appreciate any advice on this idea. Heinz
Hey Mike! I have a small question about gearbox and Axle oil.. i have been using dexronIII in r380s and lt77 and 75w90 in lt230s and all axles... Can you tell me if that is all right? Landrover tells you to use MTF oil wich is really hard to get.... Thank you for your help!
EP 80/90 in the axles and transfer
Dexron 3 in R380 - LR went to MTF but very difficult to find outside Europe and the boxes seem to work OK with D3
I used MTF and never found much of a difference for the cost of getting it here
@@BritannicaRestorations thanks Mike!
What's the difference between an R380 box on a Defender and the same box on a Discovery? Is it only the top gear lever control that changes? Great video, Mike.
Hi
As far as I can recall (as I have not seen a Disco one for a long time), the main steel selector rail is different along with the yoke that changes gear inside the extension housing - the top cover/remote is totally different
However Ashcroft's do a gadget now that allows you to use a Disco box by fitting an adaptor to the selector rail - all you need then is a remote housing/cover
Mike
@@BritannicaRestorations I believe the Disco bellhousing is different so needs to be swapped or found
Mike, are the top part of the gear boxes interchangeable?
On the LT77 and R380?
If you see the video, I try and explain it is the same casting so you could fit the
LT77 to a R380 and remove the reverse plunger, and the guide in the back, but doing it the other way around would need some machining
Mike
Hi Mike, Quick one, Is it a straight swap for a Borg warner T/box from a LT77 to a R380 ? Thanks O wise one.
I have not done one but I am 99% sure they swap over - the bolt pattern is the same but you may have to find a suitable bolt to go in the end of the mainshaft to hold the adaptor shaft on
Which one behind the perentie Land Rover? They have 4bd1 Isuzu diesel
LT95
Hi Mike, I'm here in Brazil and I have a hard time finding parts. My gearbox broke the pilot shaft and the layshaft. At beachmarch, I was able to find only LT77 gearbox parts. Do you know if these parts fit the R380 gearbox?
Roberto
No - LT 77 parts will not fit - try Ashcroft's - they have rebuild kit and individual parts

@@BritannicaRestorations Mike, you are the largest Land Rover Defender authority in the world today. His altruism in his video for everyone in the world that has Defender is fantastic. Congratulations. On the site you indicated, excellent, yes there are the pieces, but they are double with different code. look:

Another thing on the Beachmarch website is this:

which is much cheaper. Can you clarify these doubts please?

There are different models of the R380 depending on the gearbox number I will need the gearbox number

thanks for replying again Mike. I just looked herem my gearbox number is: 56A.0481744.
Could you let me know what the ideal code is? I will buy from these people that you indicated! great price and for being indicated by you, surely are great sellers
hi mike what can you tell as a bout the LT 95
Not a lot- I have one here but there are hardly and vehicles here that were fitted with them
in Australia the army used the defender 110 but the motor was a 3.9 Isuzu 4bd1and the gear box was a LT95.A four speed and the diff are Salisbury
Yes I have a 4BD1T in my 130 but I used a truck engine with a 12 inch clutch and mated it to an R380, runs ok but not much power for a 3.9
Can you say which is the best r380??
suffix L
Why dose the 4 gear crash.
Bad synchro
But witch one is stronger.
To be honest, I don't think either of the older gearboxes!
The syncros in the early R380 are smoother, yet suffer problems with second gear, and the layshaft has a weakness
The R380 suffix L gearboxes seemed to be the best as they upgraded the bearings (late 300Tdi and Td5)
The LT77 is a bit too lightweight being a regular car gearbox adapted to Land Rover use, but seemed fine in 90's
The LT85 20C solid case has been noted as the strongest - BUT seem to be only for V8 use, and are difficult (but not impossible) to adapt to 4 cylinder engines.
Again everything comes at a price - the LT85 suffered from bearing wear due to the design
You just cannot win!
Mike
Well said. Thank You very much.
