- Tourette’s has been recognized as a form of neurodiversity by the Tourette Association of America (TAA), which seems to make sense and is potentially helpful to those who are experiencing it or those around them. However, what does “neurodiversity” mean? And more specifically, what does it mean in the context of Tourette’s?
Neurodiversity, ironically, tends to produce a set of expectations. In fact, it should specifically defy such categorization because it is by its very nature diverse. In the case of Tourette’s, there are some fairly common experiences but there should be no assumption that everyone with Tourette’s will experience all of these. I tried to keep this video short, but it still ended up being about 9 minutes long (my goal was 6 minutes). In it I discuss some of the features of: habituation, sensory sensitivity, social difficulties, emotional regulation concerns, inattention, and anxiety.
