Hello! My name is Charles Galyon and I have been a practicing psychologist for about 9 years and I was diagnosed with Tourette's when I was about 5 years old. On this channel I will talk about behavioral and mental health topics, particularly Tourette's, Tics, Trichotillomania, Dermatillomania, OCD, and other compulsive behavioral disorders. I love sharing information with you and want to encourage you to ask any questions you may have. Hopefully I'll be able to provide some information that will help you understand your experiences or those you've seen in others!
Tic Mythology 22 - Tourette’s and Neurodiversity
Tourette’s has been recognized as a form of neurodiversity by the Tourette Association of America (TAA), which seems to make sense and is potentially helpful to those who are experiencing it or those around them. However, what does “neurodiversity” mean? And more specifically, what does it mean in the context of Tourette’s?
Neurodiversity, ironically, tends to produce a set of expectations. In fact, it should specifically defy such categorization because it is by its very nature diverse. In the case of Tourette’s, there are some fairly common experiences but there should be no assumption that everyone with Tourette’s will experience all of these. I tried to keep this video short, but it still ended up being about 9 minutes long (my goal was 6 minutes). In it I discuss some of the features of: habituation, sensory sensitivity, social difficulties, emotional regulation concerns, inattention, and anxiety.

Tic Mythology 21 - Old Dog, New Tics
Переглядів 872 роки тому
Tourette’s and persistent tic disorders can be interesting in how they develop. They generally seem to hit their peak in early adolescence and reduce in early adulthood. However, this is not always the case and even when it does happen, the individual may develop new tics during the lifetime. In this video I talk about a new tic that I recently developed. It’s not particularly strong, may not e...
Tic Mythology 20 - Attention Push-Ups
Переглядів 502 роки тому
Difficulties with inattention or loss of focus are common in individuals with Tourette’s or persistent tics. In fact, a diagnosis of ADHD is far more common in individuals who also have a diagnosis of Tourette’s. Growing up with such a challenge can be extremely frustrating and many people hear lots of criticism, judgment, correction, and even punishment for losing their focus. It can also inte...
Tic Mythology 19 - More on FND
Переглядів 652 роки тому
Today I’m offering a bit more info on Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). I’m hoping the information will be helpful for those affected by FND and also hope it will increase general public awareness of FND. FND can be easily misunderstood because it is often so sudden and strong that it confuses people. Individuals affected by FND tend to experience major disruptions to their lives and loss...
Tic Mythology 18 - Sudden Severe Tics
Переглядів 1742 роки тому
We have lately seen more instances of sudden, severe tics in individuals who did not have tics before. These tics often occur with a very high frequency, are very strong, and may be highly varied. This is typically different from what we see with Tourette’s and other persistent tic disorders, where the tics are often less frequent, less intense, and usually a handful of tics that remain relativ...
Tic Mythology 17 - Being Wound Up
Переглядів 412 роки тому
Individuals with Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) often experience increased anxiety and challenges related to higher levels of anxiety. When we talk about “problems with anxiety” what we usually mean is the response to the anxiety, not anxiety itself (similar to how allergies are a “problem with the immune response” not the immune system itself). As a result, individuals with TS may appear to be “woun...
Tic Mythology 16 - Stims vs Tics
Переглядів 2202 роки тому
We have naturally focused on talking about tics so far - the repetitive, generally meaningless movements that show up as a result of neurology. Today I wanted to do some compare and contrast between tics and stims (also called “stimming”). Stims can appear similar to tics. Both behaviors seem to have no obvious purpose and appear atypical such that people may notice and be confused. However, th...
Tic Mythology 15 - Adding ADHD
Переглядів 732 роки тому
Individuals with Tourette’s and persistent tic disorders have a very high frequency of having ADHD or symptoms related to ADHD. Talking about what all of those may be is a bit longer than what I aim for in this video, but maybe we can try talking about it later? In this video I talk about two things: 1) Difficulties with maintaining focus on one train of thought and the frustration that comes w...
Tic Mythology 14 - Transient Tics
Переглядів 3182 роки тому
Transient tics are “short-term” tics. They usually come and go and never come back! These kinds of tics are fairly common in young children as their brains are developing. Estimates vary a bit (naturally), but what I’ve usually seen is that 20-30% of kids will show some transient tics as they’re growing up, but comparatively few (around 2-5%) will develop persistent tics. Parents are naturally ...
Tic Mythology 13 - Tic Acceptance
Переглядів 832 роки тому
In this video I wanted to discuss a bit about practicing acceptance with tics. It takes time to work on tics (it is essentially trying to retrain part of the brain) and life goes on while we develop new skills. Tics alone can be frustrating and uncomfortable (sometimes even outright painful). Tics also have other effects on lives, including how other people respond to them, activities that may ...
Tic Mythology 12 - Vocal Tics Pt 2
Переглядів 1052 роки тому
Continuing to talk about vocal tics a bit. This time I talk a bit about trying to identify the early sensations that occur before the vocal tics (the Urge again) and how to begin working on exercises for them. A couple of things that can help are to determine which way breath/air is passing through the mouth and nose. We generally want to try to make sure air goes in the opposite direction for ...
Tic Mythology 11 - Vocal Tics Pt 1
Переглядів 2292 роки тому
Vocal tics are quite tricky but fairly common. They can includes words, sentences, sounds with the mouth or nose, other movements inside the mouth, and movements inside the throat or other parts involved in breathing. Naturally the examples people think of are usually words, especially profanity, but those are actually fairly rare. It is much more common for vocal tics to involve clicks, poppin...
Tic Mythology 10 - Treatment: Exercises Pt 2
Переглядів 1062 роки тому
This is the second part of the discussion of developing Exercises for the treatment of tics. In this video I am focusing on Motor Tics, which are tics that primarily involve external, observable movements of the body. This can include arms, legs, and head as well as movements of the torso and abdomen (the “trunk” of the body). Movements of the eyes, lips, ears, scalp, and face are also mostly c...
Tic Mythology 9 - Treatment: Exercises Pt 1
Переглядів 1612 роки тому
This is a continuation of discussing treatment techniques for Tourette’s and tics. We previously discussed the premonitory urge (aka “The Urge”) and how building awareness of it is important for treatment of tics. As a recap: The Urge is the feeling that comes before tics. People are not always aware of The Urge, but with practice they can usually develop awareness pretty quickly. Once one is a...
Tic Mythology 8 - Correcting Tics
Переглядів 1372 роки тому
One of the most important and peculiar things about tics is the apparent paradox of: the more you try to stop it, the stronger it can become. There is a reason for this and it appears to be tied to how our minds work to help us get by day to day. Well-meaning parents and teachers often run into this paradox when trying to help children with tics. Some people have described tics as being like a ...

Thank you for this awesome series of videos! Very educational and helpful!
Thank you for the feedback! It makes me so happy if it can be of help!
Hello. My 11 year old son suddenly start with tics last year in the begin of the year after being billed at school it later disappeared. This year it returned again same time but worse then before he only has vocal tic he constantly makes that he can't concentrate. The teachers said that he has stop for a week or when his busy. But since his write exams its been worse
Hello! One of the first things I would suggest is checking on the TAA (Tourette Association of America) to see if they can help you find someone locally to help out. They have a Find a Provider tool (tourette.org/find-a-provider/) to help with that. There aren’t as many providers as we would like, but there are often more than we expect! The age period of around 11-14 years often sees an increase in tic frequency and severity, which sometimes leads to suddenly seeing tics in a child who may have actually had subtle ones for years before (some of my own tics are invisible to other people). Life events can also contribute to sudden onset of severe tics, though this is less common. It is usually recommended to first check in with a neurologist so they can make sure there isn’t another reason for the tics. The website neurosymptoms.org also has good information on sudden-onset tics that we may see with functional neurological disorders (FND). The neurological evaluation is important to do first just to make sure it’s not something else. FND is often confusing when it shows up and the neurosymptoms.org website is really useful in helping to understand what’s going on when that happens.
Thank You Sir. I am a worried Mum, whose 15yr old daughter, had to come home from school yesterday. She developed extreme tics in the space of 3 hours, predominantly head shaking, during lessons. The tics became more severe, while other pupils, were laughing at her. She is distraught. I could not persuade her to leave the house today. Her teachers want her back in school on Tuesday. I feel shocked by both, the severity and the suddeness. You have been a help to me, while I sit up, in the wee small hours, and wonder what to do for my girl.
Hello, the social consequences of tics (such as at school or in public) often feed into the tics and can certainly make an already confusing and stressful situation feel even worse. This website has some excellent resources discussing acute onset of tics, things that may be associated, and helpful ways of responding to it. neurosymptoms.org/
