Fun Fact: Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, really didn't like to curse, so he screams "Fuck him!", he actually apologized beforehand to the entire cast, crew on the set and did the scene in one take. A true professional. Another Fun Fact: The cop who says mockingly "it's an opera" back to Winthorpe is Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda. The more you know!
The same Frank Oz who also directed Little Shop of Horrors '86 / The Muppets Take Manhattan / Dirty Rotten Scoundrels / What About Bob? / The Dark Crystal (alongside the late Jim Henson), and appeared as the Property Clerk in The Blues Brothers / Test Proctor in Spies Like Us / Mr. Collins in An American Werewolf in London / puppeteered the Wiseman in Labyrinth, no less!
A word about what kind of man Don Ameche (Mortimer Duke) was. Director Jon Landis REALLY wanted him for the role but when he saw in the script that he had to curse, he said he would need to be permitted to apologize to the cast and crew and asked that as few ladies as possible be on the set at the time. And the scene when he would have to drop the N-bomb, he said to Landis that he better have at least 2 cameras running, quiet set, make sure the microphones were working properly, etc. because he would only get one take, one shot, because he would only say that word one time. Landis agreed. He later said in an interview that acting is an honorable profession that does not necessarily require you to compromise your dignity as a human being.
I freakin’ love it when Eddie breaks the 4th wall in the commodities scene. Such a perfect Murphy moment. It’s like an invitation into his world. He builds deep camaraderie with the audience and you are instantly aware of (and appreciate) his point of view. Such a masterful artist.
The quote "here's Johnny!" is not originally from The Shining. They actually took it from The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was the host. Every night when they introduced him as he came out on stage the announcer would say "heeeeerre's Johnny!!"

I agree about Curtis' near perfection, but to be fair she was 24 when she made this film. The fact that she looked just as good 15 years later for True Lies is the real sign of her superior genetics. Most 24-year-old women look good.
@cmlemmus494 wait... "most 24 year old women look good"? What? When did this happen, and where do these women live that you speak of? The accuracy of this statement must😄 be checked.

One of the baggage handlers on the train is Al Franken - American politician, comedian, writer, actor, and media personality who served as a United States senator from Minnesota from 2009 to 2018. Franken first gained fame as a writer and performer on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live.
I love opening credits sequence, showing us the difference between working-class Philadelphians starting their day vs. Coleman preparing Winthorpe's breakfast, while the music is the overture to Mozart's _The Marriage of Figaro_ (an opera about servants pulling one over on an abusive nobleman). Does a great job of setting up the "prince/pauper" theme of the film.

1. The booking officer is Frank Oz. (various Muppets/Yoda) 2. Beeks/Paul Gleason also played Richard Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot police captain in "Die Hard". 😇 3. Landis didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis because she had always been a "scream queen" and he didn't know if she had the chops for comedy. 4. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word. 8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.
One of my favorite comedy movies. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you it's one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.
Eddie Murphy has to be one of the funniest people on the planet. His facial expressions and the way he talks are always perfect for the role he's playing. This movie, 48 hours with Nick Nolte, and Beverly Hills Cop are the kind of movies that you never get tired of watching.
The pawn shop guy was Bo Diddley. The guy ion the train dressed as a gorilla was John Belushi (Jim Belushi's brother). Paul Gleason played Clarence Beeks - he also played the detention monitor in The Breakfast Club. The booking cop is Frank Oz - voice of Kermit the Frog.
Great Movie! When i first started watching you as a reactor, i didn't care much for the reactions but i kept watching and you have become one of my favorite!
The pawn shop owner was none other than rock progenitor Bo Diddley ! Dan Ackroyd loved blues musicians and earlier paid homage to them homage in The Blues Brothers. The short gorilla keeper was Al Franken - future Senator from Minnesota. The Duke Bros make a special appearance in Murphy s classic comedy, “ Coming to America”.
Late to the party, but just providing some info about the baggage handlers on the train. They were Al Franken and Tom Davis, a comedy writing team for the early days of SNL. Of course, Franken served as a US senator for nearly a decade. Davis was a successful screenwriter who unfortunately died at the age of 59 from cancer.
This movie is an old favorite of mine! Interesting tidbit: In the movie Coming to America, Eddy Murphy's character gives Duke and Duke a bag of money, Mortimer says "We're back" lol
One of my favorite Movies of All Time. Not simply a great Christmas Movie, it is a terrific movie all around, with an amazing Cast, unforgettable scenes and endlessly quotable lines... One Comedian at the absolute PEAK of his comedy prowess, another Comedian coming off of a massively successful run on this fledgling Late Night TV Show called Saturday Night Live, and oh yeah... A drop dead gorgeous Jamie Lee Curtis, finally released from the shackles of being labeled the "Scream Queen" for movies such as "Halloween" and "Halloween 2", "Prom Night", and "Terror Train". (How many of you giggled when I said "Jamie Lee Curtis" and "released" in the same sentence, especially in reference to this Film?!?😂 I know that this movie is based on a novel called "The Prince and The Pauper", but it is a very unique and in many ways, Original, script. I love the dialog, the interactions between the cast (I mean, c'mon... Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy!!!) but the setting is almost a character in itself... Philadelphia is perfect in this movie. It is gorgeous. Simply perfect! I love this movie! Me and my family watch it every Chritmas!!
If you’re looking for a few more great Jamie Lee Curtis movies, she was in “Fish Called Wanda” with John Cleese and Michael Palin from Monty Python, or “True Lies” with Schwartzenegger. Of course Eddie Murphy is probably best known for “Coming to America” with Arsenio and James Earl Jones…. That movie has a great cameo with the old guys from this movie, as well as what I believe is Samuel L Jackson’s first big speaking role. ☮️❤️🎶
The "Here's, Johnny!" is a reference the Ed McMahon voice announcement at the the beginning of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson....originally so even in the Shining it's a Tonight Show reference.
I love this movie. I often watch it during the holidays. Not sure its a holiday movie, but I treat it like it is. 🎄 The gorilla scene still makes me laugh out loud. "One gorilla, two gorilla." 🤣🤣
Jamie lee’s nickname in Hollywood at this time period was “the body”. I remember after this came out all the kids at school were telling the S car go joke. The here’s Johnny is actually a reference to the Johnny Carson nighttime talk show, his announcer would always say “ and here’s Johnny “ before he walked out on stage. The shorter of the two package handlers on the train went on to become a U.S senator.
The short baggage handler on the train is played by Al Franken, who was a longtime writer and actor on SNL, and later on was a US Senator. The guy in the ape costume is Jim Belushi, brother of Blues Brothers and Animal House actor John Belushi, star of According To Jim, and nowadays is a lot farmer who has his own brand of gummies and edibles.
My first semester of college, back in '00, my sociology professor had us watch this movie - we were analyzing the *NATURE vs NURTURE* question posed by the Dukes which led to their bet.
When I was a kid in the 80's, this one, Best Defense...anything with Eddie. When I got older and he was in Shrek, my kids thought it was funny how much I laughed at Donkey. I said "just wait 'till you're older...you'll see.
This reaction is fascinating! I have never seen anyone take this movie so seriously! 😂 But it is admirable that you did, lol. You've got the best reaction channel on UA-cam.
"Can you invest in me?" LOL! I've felt the same way every time I watch that scene, going back to when adolescent me first saw the film on HBO in the late 1980s. By the way, that gorgeous bosom and figure of hers are completely natural. Her revealing it in all its glory came as quite a shock to folks used to the relatively lanky and very clothed Jamie Lee Curtis from the "Halloween" films.
@8:50 Stereotypes are messed up, but at the same time they are funny as hell. That is one of the things that makes old school movies like this great they were not afaird to make fun of stereotypes.
Before "Here's Johnny!" was in the Shining, it was Ed McMahon catch phrase when he introduced Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. The Shining took it from that and made it creepy.
The cop who checked Winthorp in, finding the PCP... Frank Oz, a director and friend of this movie's direstor, but also the puppeteer and voice between Miss Piggy, Fozzie and Yoda among many others.
31:44 When he says, "It's 10 o'clock, here's Johnny" I believe he is referring to Johnny Carson who hosted the Tonight Show. That's who Jack Nicholson was impersonating on the Shining as well.
"Here's Johnny!" is the intro from The Tonight Show when it was hosted by Johnny Carson. Nicholson improvised that quote during they take they used for that famous scene in The Shining.
From IMDb Trivia page on Don Ameche: *"He frequently apologized to his Trading Places (1983) co-star Eddie Murphy for the racist statements that his character made in the film."*
@chalmapatterson544 Actors read scripts. Yes. The dialog in 99.99% of all movies has nothing to do with the actors saying it but with the writers who write it. Ya know? So, Don Ameche was not trying to insult Eddie Murphy, he was playing Mortimer Duke, a pretend person who does not really exist.
Awesome movie! Mortimer and the other jerk make a very funny cameo in the movie Coming to America with Eddie Murphy. You should totally watch that next! Also, my husband is an Eagles fan, he loves your blanket!
Little early man, this is a Christmas movie. I absolutely love this movie. Jamie Lee Curtis at the time of filming... 100% natural. She tried botox once and hated it, she's still got it even now... would
Eddie Murphy ran into Mortimer and Randall in Coming to America... They were homeless in an alley, and Prince Hakeem gave them money and they yelled "Were back!"
Look at a YOUNG Gus Fring, Carlos Espesito in this movie lol. He was in the jail scene towards the beginning of the movie lol Man this movie was a classic. Glad you liked it.
47:49 Muppets. SNL. Richard Hunt, (b. 1951 d. 1992) was all your favorite Muppets, including Scooter, Beaker, Janice (guitarist), Sweetums, and more; Frank Oz who played the desk sergeant who found the bag of white powder was Bert, Grover, Miss Piggy, and Yoda among others. The Muppets, Eddie Murphy, and Dan Aykroyd all came from SNL, and James Belushi (man in gorilla suit) would join the cast of SNL in the fall of 1983 after this movie. The gorilla keeper who thinks it is his turn to drive was Al Franken who wrote for SNL from 1975-1980 and 1985-1995.
It's astounding how truly talented Eddie Murphy was, even at such a young age. This film is one of the greatest comedies of the 80s, IMO.
musically too
Super underrated comedy

I love how that first fact is attributed to Ameche not wanting to say THAT, but I don't hear a similar fact for the scene where he had to say ni**er 😆
The Dukes' trader, Wilson, was Richard Hunt, who performed as Scooter, Janice, Sweetums, Beaker and other Muppets.

Younger generation get easily offended. Racial comedy is different from actual racism.
my favorite line ever, when Eddie is in jail and he says “but you don’t know that, cause you a big Barry White lookin muthafucka” 😂😂😂
Yep. That line is hilarious, especially because dude did really resemble Barry White a bit.
Before "Here's Johnny!" was in the Shining, it was Ed McMahon catch phrase when he introduced Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. The Shining took it from that and made it creepy.
"They might be natural.... they look good either way"... sometimes you KILL me man LOL!!!!
This movie is peak 1983, times sure have changed!
The cop who checked Winthorp in, finding the PCP... Frank Oz, a director and friend of this movie's direstor, but also the puppeteer and voice between Miss Piggy, Fozzie and Yoda among many others.
This is an all time classic
The duke brothers make an appearance as themselves homeless in Edie Murphy’s “Coming to America” I was mind blown
"Heeeere's Johnny!" is originally from The Johnny Carson show that Jimmy Fallon hosts today. They have used it in a few movies.
One of my favourite 80’s films with 2 of my favourite actors! Oh and Jamie Lee Curtis is smokin 👌
This is such a great movie. You can always watch this & laugh every time.
Shining role play 😂😂😂. Here’s Johnny is from the Johnny Carson show young Blood👊
31:44 When he says, "It's 10 o'clock, here's Johnny" I believe he is referring to Johnny Carson who hosted the Tonight Show. That's who Jack Nicholson was impersonating on the Shining as well.
Coming to America, Beverly Hills cop, raw, delirious are some of my favorite Eddie Murphy films. Let's goooo Leo
This film is brilliant. 😂❤😊. Love you Leo.
"Here's Johnny!" is the intro from The Tonight Show when it was hosted by Johnny Carson. Nicholson improvised that quote during they take they used for that famous scene in The Shining.
Pork belly is delicious. You can get some at the final cut in the casino. Its very good.
One amusing detail I found is how Winthorpe assisted with payroll - pretty entry-level job for someone so high up in the company.
From IMDb Trivia page on Don Ameche:
*"He frequently apologized to his Trading Places (1983) co-star Eddie Murphy for the racist statements that his character made in the film."*
Don Ameche was a true gentleman.
@@hippychikforeverAnd he invented the telephone.
🙄
@chalmapatterson544 Actors read scripts. Yes.
The dialog in 99.99% of all movies has nothing to do with the actors saying it but with the writers who write it.
Ya know?
So, Don Ameche was not trying to insult Eddie Murphy, he was playing Mortimer Duke, a pretend person who does not really exist.
10:40
Gus Fring chilling before the start of the chicken empire.

One of my all-time favorite movies! Eddie Murphy has classics! Plus Dan Akroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are in it too!
30:00 That's Bo Didley (RIP). A famous Blues guitarist
This movie is funny but proves a point.

I can't believe this is your first time watching this movie! It's one of my favorites!
Such a great movie ! My friends and I are constantly quoting this one. Thanks Leo !
Little early man, this is a Christmas movie. I absolutely love this movie.
Jamie Lee Curtis at the time of filming... 100% natural.
She tried botox once and hated it, she's still got it even now... would

I love how Eddie broke the Fourth Wall @24:48
Eddie Murphy ran into Mortimer and Randall in Coming to America... They were homeless in an alley, and Prince Hakeem gave them money and they yelled "Were back!"

Look at a YOUNG Gus Fring, Carlos Espesito in this movie lol. He was in the jail scene towards the beginning of the movie lol

$80K in '83 is nearly $250K today.
