anyone notice how emotional he got when talking bout the compressor lmaoo
haha... damn straight geeks unit! :D
It’s called passion
he might be getting paid by sonnox or something..lol, seems like they all are selling something
He loves compression bro, like really loves it lol
😂😂😂😂😂
its a great technique and i thank you for showing this, however i believe you mixed up 'upward compression' (when you boost quieter parts when signal drops below the threshold) with 'upward expansion' (when you boost louder parts when signal exceeds the threshold). pro-g is a gate/expander and not a compressor and so it does 'upward expansion' when set to 'upward' mode by this logic. somebody please correct me if im wrong, i see a lot of confusion about these terms online and i would like to have a clear understanding. anyways, this is a great video and perhaps one of the best channels on youtube on all things mixing :)
Yes I noticed that too and think you’re correct
Good one David! Loved the upward compression technique. Never heard anyone else make mention of it although I've heard it on countless records. Sounds great. I'll give it a try on my next track. Thank you!
Because I rule 😄 joking, thank you happy it was useful
@@mixbustv Haha. You do rule actually. Have a good day!
Great video as usual. I use the compressor trick a lot on vocal delays so that the delay is only heard after the last word of a phrase and is silent during singing. Much easier than automating the send level.
Yeah, I love that one tooo... but it never occurred to me to do it with reverb for some reason.
is it me or vocals are not in sync with music
Rushing.
I've had the same sensation
You are the boss
Hey Dave, nice video tips and trick..please make new Video about the best 10 list of plugin reverb in 2021..thanks b4 🙏
Both techniques just blew my mind. Question: in your opinion, which technique would you choose for this mix? Both sound interesting, but... which fits the vibe better, in your opinion?
Awesome! Thanx for sharing this knowledge!
I was thinking, man that vocal sounds amazing. Then I saw the chain U47 into 1073. No wonder it sounds so good
lead471073?)))
Oh man, how people love to praise the gear, but the real reason is that singer has nice voice himself. Believe me)
infosmartsound no argument there. A great singer will work on any mic.
give him a Samson c1!
@@tecnogadget2 i know this was 3 years ago but any reason you singled out the Samson C1? Are they that bad? Or that good in your opinion? I ask cos I have one that use every now and then and find fairly good :)
I liked this pro tip.
Holy cow that's like the old echo units that only give echo tails when you stop singing. How did I never think of this???
Genius! Subscribed!?,
sonnox oxford compressor still doing its thing all these years later
Great video, thanks! I am wondering though, couldn't you get the same effect if you automate the mix level of the reverb plugin to be more dry during the vocals and more wet during the spaces in between?
Another trick that i find also works pretty well (at least with "percussive" signals like vocals, drums,...) is to insert a sidechain gate on the reverb track, triggered by the vocals, drums,...
P.S. By the way, what's the name of this track? :)
I love your reverb videos man. Very informative and applicable 🔥
So glad I found your channel! I've got the fundamentals down and have a good ear so your videos are exactly the refining touches I need to get that pro sound. Many thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the tip. Tracking vocals right now, but the singer hates reverb on his voice. I think this will work for him.
That is one of my tricks to get "reverb"without actually using reverb. :) I find it thickens up the vocals. I plan on using a little delay and a little of your reverb tip. Once again, thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge with all of us. Much appreciated!
Can somebody please explain the right routing to do this technique on logic x ? its confusing . Thanks a lot
Did you ever figure it out? I'm using logic as well
even already knowing this I really enjoyed the clarity of your communication. Really the Boss of mix engineering on the tube :)
Nice tune too!
Damn...!!! I used to do this SC Technique for Ducking Vocal Delays.. Never Tried it on Reverb... SOUNDS SOO DAMN "PRO" !!! :-D Thanks a Million... !!! :-D
What a Great Technique. I'm delighted I found this particular tutorial. For the longest time I've been using combinations of delay "tucked" inside slight reverb for the purpose of adding a bit of "snap" to vocals when the vocals stop...without sounding artificial or engineered. This is great as I want my vocals to be out front and clear from the backgrund music without having to do a lot of additional processing and doubling of tracks for separation of effects.
Question: Wouldn't this also serve to reduce CPU usage as well? Or am I misunderstanding something? It seems like this serves to kill two birds with one stone as it would be less processing of additional effects through an entire mix without losing dynamics. Thanks again...I will be burning the midnight oil again playing with this. Cheers!
Marty
I do this with delays, pretty rad
Hey David. This is a big question but as a mixer how do you know when to use downward, upward, or parallel compression? Do you know right away what to reach for or do you try all methods to see what fits best for the mix?
This guy always give unique tips. He don't copy others videos. Very well for that. Thanks!
So cool!!! that way the voice keeps in the mid and its strength! thanks David! I´ll apply it to my mixes! :D
Thanks for sharing this trick. I tried the expander trick and it worked like a charm. I love the expander idea so much because without the tail of the reverb, you can get your reverb to blend in so well with the sound that one wouldn't even know it's there initially unless you have your reverb volume up quite a bit. In which case, I'd probably need to back that off a bit lol
Hey man, I just recently discovered your channel. I must say that it is by far one of the best pro audio channels I have come across. Really well thought out content. Your experience speaks for itself. Could I ask that the demo meterials could be a bit louder in your videos though please. I find that to really hear the detail of the demos I have to turn up a bit and then the vocal is quite loud. Other than that please keep the great content coming💪🏼
Very good techniques, but I'm just debating where these effects would come in useful. It definitely provides interest to the track, but I don't feel like it adds to the mix. But, that's just my opinion.
15 mins to explain simple reverb ducking…. Lol
Oh yeah, 9 years ago before everyone copied the video and plugins companies started adding it to their reverb lol. Also, it gets people like you to comment. Now catch up, you got 9 years of videos to go thru son 👍
Nice mix trick! But isn't the final result comparable with the called "Ducking Reverb". You used a sidechain compressor instead of a gate...or not? Because I got similar results with a ducking reverb.
Thanks for this tip! Great advice I cant wait to try out.
Sounds good man , can't you automat that compression at the end If you still wanted the tail .
Great technique! very subtle but yet so good sounding! The background guitar sounds like a jazz/funk version of thunderstruck haha
***** Thanks, the video was so helpful, I like the expansion alot, but I think the tail is cut off so fast that it fills a little bit unnatural, maybe adding a small delay to distract the ears might help, IMHO
The SC compression is a great tip for clearing a path for the vocal while retaining the tail. The expander I don't really get, I just shorten the tail in the verb if I want it to cut quickly when the vocals break.
OK so took down notes but kind of confused. Not sure what to put where. So we have the lead vocal track which I send to a Aux bus "VOX FX" and then do I put the reverb in an insert in that VOX FX channel? I see that you have a channel called MTS Room, is that the vox fx channel?? And none of my compressors have a key. I have the Waves plus others. thx
I wish you would use the Bypass during playing a phrase of the song. We could much better hear the difference than when you start the song over again with a gap in-between.
Damn this was 7 yrs ago..and I’ve been following you the whole time lol..hope all is well David take care my brother 💪🏾💪🏾💯
Very helpful reverb tips, Thanks! Would be great to see a video where you start with a DRY MIX and then add the "space" (verbs/delays) to ALL instruments. This would show how they all work 'together'.
Awesome. Keep up the great work.
I totally forgot about this trick, so thanks for the very cool reminder tutorial! Dope trick.
that vocal is on point, really like this reverb technique too, but that vocal ought to be on some r&b/electronic track, good luck! btw, how many compressors and EQ's, etc. do u have? and which ones do u use the most?
Best tip I've seen in a long time ! Thank you !
Thanks for not starting your video with the idiotic "Jo, wasup guys". Very good 'how to' video!
Very cool is this a standard pro technique or did you come up with the gate/upward compression verb setup. Again really useful, thanks you.
Just perfect. Well explained and very contributive. Thx.
i LOVE your reverd-delay sound in your master song. can you tell me something about your snare sound? i dont like it that much, i just think everything is perfect but that sound. maybe you wanted it like that. i love your videos and i learn a lot. thank you from spain man. sorry mi inglesh.
can u give me the links for download Sonnox oxford reverb, cos i can't download please tell me..... i need everyone helps
Why would you EQ a reverb before and after when it's a totally linear process?
What if you use a compressor without the spesific "upward" function? Is the trick to emulate the white line on the graph, and the fast attack with even faster release, and then gain reducing around 12db ?
can you tell us how you did the bass sound please??
guillermo casanovas I second that!! the bass sounds so good!!! powerful but controlled.
Very helpful tutorial.
Thank you.
Who's the artist?
Please post a link.
Does anyone notice, on the ad that tells me it's a waste of time to watch UA-cam tutorials, how bad the vocal sounds on it? It's horrible. Frfr.
It's these little things that make the final result much more polished. I should really make a list because it's easy to forget.
Its funny, I had this same song when I attended a mixing class at Full Sail University.. lol
Awesome ideas. Great stuff!😊
Sonnox compressor is a clear digital compressor , what do you mean by it sounds great ??
can all of this not be done with the reverbs own parameters? like decay?...i mean i am not by all means taking anything from this video at all but most reverb plug ins have these settings
I am guessing Pre-Delay and this technique should be used in tandem?
This is great!! Thanks so much!!!
Excellent vid!!! I know this one's a little older, but it's still a classic! David, still loving the Oxford Dynamics?
I do, It's a great compressor with a lot of features
1.5x speed will help you to understand better!
Thank you Mixbus!! Great technique!!
This is boss, I've been using the same technique to compress other effects. Thank you
im doing these steps but im getting the opposite.. when the vocals are being sung its wet and when it stops the reverb goes away..
Love the video and the sound is really really terrific. I'm still lost on how to compress the reverb though. I understand how to do it with other instruments, but applying it to the reverb is definitely escaping me. Is there anyway you could explain this to an amateur like me?
Sidechain
when was SC-compression established?
as soon as there were compressors available or did it came later? and was there a person to invent it?
i mean basically every EDM track makes an ovious use out of it. but if you listen carefully it is found
everywhere...
thank you for your great channel, mr. mixbus tv!!!!
thx for your answer man! cheers from switzerland
cool vocal sound, what is the plug in chain? what is the 4th insert?
very usufulll thank you
No problem ***** thank you for stopping by!
Little off-topic: Nice bass guitar!
smart! very good technique
I was searching for this video wow man you are a great teacher bro😘
Nice tutorial. One question. The sonnox compressor has 24bit dithering and it can't be switched off. How do you deal with it if someone works in 32bit float? I mean dithering is always on and we don't need dither before mastering. So what are you doing with this plugin without having the possibility to turn it off?
***** I have to check again. Thanks!
i may sound petty hahaah but those compressor knobs are so so so ugly
Excellent tutorial. This is a great idea that I've never heard of before.
Your videos are great...a little too advanced for me...mostly because I work with simple mixes and am a beginner......I've subscribed cus I'm sure (hope) I'll need this some day....Thank you
what kind of reverb is that?
This is amazing. Smooths out the Vocals sooo nicely!
May I ask when it comes to vocal reverbs when would it be appropriate to use a mono verb or delay over a stereo one?
Terrific! reply I understand thank you.
Are you using both these techniques at once to get the best of both worlds?
Excelent Tip, Thanks x1000
Nice! So the second technique would be useful for a snare drum during a blast beat right? 'Cause I like snare drums drenched in reverb lol but when it gets faster and you have so many hits it gets pretty chaotic, and I'd like to control it a little bit but without using automation to change the reverb time or the dry/wet parameter
+MixbusTV great! Thanks for the quick response, I'll give it a try then, keep up the videos!
Thanks for the inspiration, the reverb sounds great!
Just one note: You use the term "Upwards Compression" in a wrong way. What you are doing with the Pro-G is called Upwards Expansion ;-)
no its called upward compression too
What about using both together?any ideas?
Very Cool Borat!
Ultrarock87 he is a russian thats about 6'5"... better hope you never meet him lol
wow c00l c0mm3nt d0g
he doesn't even sound like borat doofus
Nuances, details ... accumulate many of them and suddenly you'll have a high quality production. Man , you are crazy...like genius crazy I mean :) Bravo !
Very interesting video. I prefer the expander on the vocal verb (though I'd personally like some tail on some mixes, which could be added in). I could see the compression working well to duck delays on a mail vocal. Subscribed, thanks!
Thanks David,am sure today is just, third or fourth may be fifth times, again am learning this demonstration,it's fun,it's enjoyable,it's intuitive if you put just work to it.your the best engineer in the world, your voice implies how much your enjoying what your doing what you love to do,impressive,I give you credits.thanks.love from East Africa Tanzania🇹🇿
Sound like the guy from Facebook Story by Frank Ocean. Cool vid, thanks!
I seriously just tried to grab your screens scroll bar to move up to check out the top of those vocal transients lol.. oh well it's still early.. but great video! I had tried this on a general reverb aux before and really liked it's effect, but thought I was crazy for doing it.. I didn't know if I was adding problems with intelligibility or dynamics, but to my intuition it just sounded more 'alive'... so probably good advice more like you said on a song "with a lot of space", and to use the side chain dry trigger.. you can really hear it sounds like a 'total washout' without the Ex-S.C. Comp!
That upward compression trick is EXACTLY what I needed thank you for making this, and thanks UA-cam for recommending me this 3 year old video
Observations from my personal work: yes this is valid, but be careful with makeup gain on the compressor - try on and off. AND, sometimes a pre-delay on reverb is enough to make it sound separated
Awesome tutorial with just one thing missing! You compared two different reverb techniques but didn't mention which one you ultimately used or preferred for the track (and why you preferred it).
I've used this technique, though not with the same plugins, on piano and it sounds great, it helps you keep the clarity of the dry instrument and at the same time, have a sensation of space (if used judiciously). Thank you for yet another informative and entertaining video!!
Took me awhile to wrap my head around this, but wow! Nice trick. Never woulda thought about that.
Thanks for the help!! Great channel!
Which version of Sonnox Oxford Dynamics are you using (1.3, 1.5, ).
i dont have key input button( what is this>?
Another amazing tutorial, below you just advised that sidechain is one of the most powerfull tool in mixing. Please advise some more super tools for mixing
