While enjoying the baking of this Southern classic, spare a prayer for those in the Southeastern states. Many are going to spend years in putting their lives back together.
Personally, I like my chess pie cold. There is a Nashville hot chicken place down the street that makes a wonderful chocolate chess pie.

I've had Chess Pie and love it. My sweet southern grandmother, MawMaw, used to make a Buttermilk Pie, which is similar to a Chess Pie, just without the cornmeal. It was one of my favorites! Maybe try a Buttermilk Pie sometime!

That is what we all did, when we were kids, licking the bowl and the beaters. We did not worry about the raw egg in there.
Chess pie is ok, but in that vein, I prefer buttermilk pie. Uses buttermilk instead of whole milk, no corn meal, lemon juice instead of vinegar and I also add a little cinnamon and nutmeg.

I remember my Granny making Chess Pie in the Fall and Ice Box Pie (cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice, lemon zest and whipped cream) in the Spring.
If there was any leftover by Monday, my brother and I got a slice as an after school snack.
Back then we got home from school at 4:30 (bus route) and dinner was between 5 and 6 so it was like having dessert half an hour before dinner.
If I remember correctly in Elementary/Primary
    School Opened at 7 am
    Breakfast served from 7-7:25 am
Homeroom, first bell 7:30 am (roll call)
    First class 7:45 am
    Last bell 3:45 pm
By High School, the hours were 8 am-2:45 pm
9-10 hours a day depending on your transportation, 5 days a week - School work
After school we snacked or listened to music while starting our homework until dinner then finished homework after dinner, tv time, bath/shower time, bedtime.
Wake up the next day and do it all over again.
On weekends we had household chores then free time to hang with friends or entertain ourselves.
Around the house or home by dinner, always.

I'm going to add this pie to my Thanksgiving menu. I hope you guys are able to join your neighbors across the pond for Thanksgiving this year. My father used to have brisket on the table every year, along with the turkey and all of the sides. The sweets had a table all to themself. I try to keep that memory going every year.

Recipe at allrecipes is ok, but I recommend sprinkling the top with you favorite chopped nuts and chocolate chips. If you like it, customize your own recipe to your taste, and start a new tradition.

My grandma made us our favorite pies for our birthdays instead of cake. Mine was cherry delight. My middle brother got pecan pie without the pecans. My oldest brother got chess pie. My grandma made a thick crumbly base. I think she made the base like a cake mix with only butter and not all the liquid ingredients. It was delicious. The cherry delight is 1 8oz package of softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup granulated sugar. 8 Oz heavy whipping cream and 1/2 cup powdered sugar. 1 tsp vanilla extract. 1 Graham cracker crust. 1can of cherry pie filling......
Mix the cream cheese and powdered sugar together and set aside. Mix the heavy whipping cream, vanilla and granulated sugar til thick peaks appear. Then combine the cream cheese and whipped cream together. I like to use a mixer for that too, but my grandma just folded them together with a wooden spoon. Once mixed together, add to Graham cracker crust. It will be higher than the crust edge. Add a can of cherry pie filling on the top of the pie. Chill in the fridge overnight. I promise you'll love it! Love your content, and Elana is so smart and beautiful. Love you guys ❤

See, I always have the opposite problem with pies like this. My pie pans are too deep and the filling only makes it 2/3 of the way full.
Although one of my favorite parts of doing a pie is having a bit of scrap pie dough leftover. I like to make a little turnover filled with butter, brown sugar, and whatever nuts I have on hand.
Tasty little bonus treat for the chef.

LEMON CHESS PIE, ALL THE WAY! It was my favorite pie growing up, and still is to this day. I make it every holiday, and all of my Northern friends (I'm a Texan) now make it themselves every holiday, because they had never heard of, much less had one before either. I will gladly share my recipe if you want it!

This looks similar to several very easy and cheap pie recipes that can be made from very commonly found ingredients in every pantry. No fruit to peel, no stove top custard, no meringue to whip, etc. Just mix everything and dump it in the pie shell.
Maybe try just egg yolks next time. It might get rid of the sulfur-y taste from the whites, and taste like an extra sweet custard. Probably not necessary if you plan on covering up the eggy flavor with chocolate in your next attempt.

My great grandmother made chess pie. I have made it often. Your recipe looks pretty similar. Somewhere I have the great Minnie Pearl’s recipe.

I'd like to see you try to do a Pennsylvania Dutch Shoo Fly Pie. You'll need to Google or UA-cam a recipe for it. But that would be a fun one to try.

@Mrhandfriends That was a good try. I just watched it. The recipe I had, had me put the crumb mix in the pie shell first and add the wet mixture on top. The crumb mixture then rose to the top during the baking. It was very odd but it worked. Maybe on your next visit to the states you can make it to Pennsylvania and if you do head for Lancaster. That's the Pennsylvania Dutch/Amish area of the state. My family visited there back in the 1970s when I was a youngster.

Now that you’ve tried chess pie you need to try a southern buttermilk pie and a lemon chess pie.

The southern version is buttermilk pie. Chess pie is more in other areas from what I’ve seen. We usually have a buttermilk pie and a pecan pie at holidays.

I’ve heard of Chess Pie, But never have had it. I always wanted to try to make one. It’s consistency looks similar to a buttermilk pie. I would like to see you guys try one of those. I believe I remember you saying that you cannot get buttermilk in England. Another channel I subscribe to is called Mec Eats America, and he posted a picture of English buttermilk that he bought in his local grocery store. Buttermilk Pie is another “Suthen” recipe.😉 Also, a chocolate pie with meringue on top. My favorite aside from Pecan, is Raisin Pie. Not a huge, Raisin fan, but that pie is amazing. It’s become my favorite pie. I make them every Thanksgiving and Christmas, as it has become a family favorite. Even if you’re not a huge raisin fan, you should at least give this pie a chance. It might change your opinion. It did mine!
The chess pie looked beautiful! It turned out perfect and looked so good. Good job Mrs H.

Love chess pie! Fun fact: pecan pie is a chess pie. BTW, You know you can weigh your sugar. 8 oz equals 1 cup. Same with butter and liquid ingredients.
