GET OUT is one of the most effective and well structured horror films of all time, and immediately cemented Jordan Peele as one of the best horror directors of our generation. The film is loaded with deeper layers of meaning, insane attention to detail, and dozens subtle clues pointing to the ultimate twist and the secret plan of the Armitage family. Erik Voss analyzes the film's story structure, secrets in the screenplay, and references to horror classics like The Shining and Rosemary's Baby. Why is the scene with Rose and the Fruit Loops so misunderstood... and what is the deeper layer of meaning to this moment?

If you’re doing the Jordan Peele movies, please do Nope next. I’m still tryna understand the full implications of that movie until this day. That was definitely the best Jordan has made so far.

dang - the “random asian guy” comment 15:49 kinda stings esp in an analysis of a film about race…as if asian men are just set dressing and not even of any narrative or contextual consequence & kinda just brushed off as a *fun* quip by erik 😓

The moment when Chris goes upstairs to get away from the party and all conversation abruptly ceases as all of the guests look up and listen to his footsteps is one of the all-time creepiest moments in horror cinema. Literally felt like I had icy water trickling down my arms.

I had never seen Get Out, I thought it wouldn't be my kind of film but I watched it last night because this Deep Dive came out. So glad I did, it was brilliant and I'll be checking out the rest of Jordan Peele's work. I'm not much of a horror fan but this struck me as more like Black Mirror than full on horror. Of course that could just be because of Daniel Kaluuya..

I am with you. I've never liked Horror movies, but I HAD to support Jordan Peele when *Get Out* first debut in theaters. Since then, I've discovered I STILL don't like horror movies, but LOVE all of Jordan Peele's films. They are, as you said, somewhat like *Black Mirror* and the subject matter stays with you. I very highly recommend watching *US* and *NOPE.*

GET OUT is such a phenomenal film, even taken at various levels. I mean, just as a basic horror movie it's ace, as a horror with a story to tell as an (overt) allegory for racism it excels, and the acting is totally amazing throughout.
Really gave off the vibes for Jordan Peele that James Cameron had after his first time (properly) in the director's chair telling his story his way. Peele has backed that up with each of his subsequent films (just like Cameron did) and each of his future films are automatically going to be considered "must watch" movies.

This was an excellent Deep Dive, and I hope you also do *US* and *NOPE!* Maybe a Deep Dive on the WAY in which Jordan Peele presents his genius on film? Anyhoo, my favorite moment in this entire film is once Chris is safely in Rod's TSA car. Rod opens his mouth, closes it, opens it again and says, *"I mean, I told you not to go in that house."* And then raises his hands like "That's all I'm gonna say!" I crack up every time I think about it, and I've even said it randomly to my kids. 😅😅😆😂🤣🤣😁

Great video as always, Erik! With all of these details, I was wondering if the reflection in Andre's eyes right after the camera flash held a meaningful scene. It looks like a person or two in front of a bright window or door. It is hard to tell whether it is just the filming crew and the scene lighting, or if something special was CGI-ed there.

And at the end Chris left his girlfriend bleeding out in the cold kind of like his mom's fate in the beginning of the movie.

Where she belonged. It was a fitting end, for this viewer. I love movies where the clearly delineated bad guy/gal gets their due.

I think the cereal is a bit of a stretch but I really like the idea. Popcorn came to mind.
I agree, the strength of this movie will have me watching Peele for years to come.

The ironic part is these instances happen on a daily basis. The term is Afro Surrealism. When a certain demographic of people create a situation and then blame you for it, and you ask yourself how is this even right, it is a relief Jordan Peele is shedding light on the subject.
