Pat Morita known for being a comedian had one of the most heart wrenching scenes in cinema history. When Daniel finds him celebrating and that celebration quickly turns to regret when we find out his wife and newborn baby died in an internment camp while he was fighting in WWII. His unit in the movie the 442nd is a real unit. It was the most decorated unit in WWII and it was all Japanese Americans trying to prove they were loyal American citizens.
such a scene omg, it's oscar worthy.
Ralph did the eulogy at Pat Morita's funeral, he titled it "forever my sensei"
Wow, I did not know about Pat Morita’s eulogy. Such an amazing fact for me to learn! Thank you!
I never picked up on what that scene was referencing until much later in life, when I learned about places like Manzanar. And of course, Pat Morita (as well as George Takei, if we're sticking with Japanese-American actors of that era) was in an internment camp as a child.
442 !!! GO FOR BROKE !!! Legends. Absolute legends.
The story of the 442 Regimental Combat Team was told (Hollywood style) in the 1951 movie Go For Broke! The internment camps stories are told from the viewpoint of the soldiers talking about their families back home. It shows some of the racism they had to deal with from other soldiers. Of course being a 50's era Hollywood movie there has to be the big blonde officer in charge, who hates the fact that he is "relegated" to commanding Japanese-American soldiers, but comes to respect them and maybe even care for them by the end.
The Date mentioned in the Telegram (11/2/1944) was two days after the 442/100 fought their toughest and bloodiest battle, rescuing a US Battalion from Texas that had been surrounded by crack German Troops. the 442/100 suffered 800 casualties, including 200 KIA in the five day battle to rescue 275 men of the Texas battalion. The battle cemented the 442/100's legacy and reputation as a fearless unit. So grateful were the Texans that in 1963, Governor John Connally made every member of the 442/100 "Honorary Texans".
To this day, the 442/100 remains the most decorated Military Unit for its size and length of service in US History. Three of the 21 Medals of Honor awarded to 442/100th soldiers were for this battle.
The dad Daniel didnt know he needed and the son Miyagi didnt know he needed. A beautiful story. Karate is the secondary story here. I think that's why it stands up.
Agree. The first thing everyone says after seeing this movie is the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi.
More so the son Miyagi WOULD have wanted. Since his son died with his wife.
Thanks for the wonderful reaction guys. Not to sound corny, but this film will always hold a special place in my heart. Being a young kid when I saw it at the theater I was too young to appreciate the themes and lessons it teaches us. But I sure did as I got older.
I really love how the screen writer essentially showed karate from 2 very different perspectives. Sensei Kreese using it as an offensive sport and Mr. Miyagi as a defensive art. As it should be.
I really hope you guys watch the original trilogy and then consider COBRA KAI. It's an awesome series.
The studio was really nervous about casting Pat Morita in the role of Mr Miagi. They weren't sure if the audience would accept a comedian as a mentor. He ended up providing guidance for an entire generation!
Pat Morita deserved an Oscar for his performance
@@neillenet291 come on!
@@neillenet291 He was robbed of that Best Supporting Actor Award. Pat Morita had the best performance hands down.
@@C2JPUNK35 Agreed
I know. I was one of them.
“That kid’s gonna end up with a mugshot one day.” OMG Amber, that was the best line ever! I’m dying!! 🤣🤣🤣
And if you watch cobra Kai you’d see she was right. Dutch did end up in prison, according to the old Cobras that met up for Tommy’s last day. He was doing time in Lompoc. RIP Tommy and the actor who played him, Rob Garrison.
if you watch parts 2 and 3, you'll LOVE the Cobra Kai show....It's so fascinating seeing what happened to Johnny and Daniel when they became adults.
Cobra Kai is a tv show still airing about them 40 years later
And "Johnny" makes the show.......gotta love his character.
Johnny is the best.
As great this movie is, Cobra Kai just as good presenting the opposite side of the story as well as the impact on their adult lives so many years later. It is a great “Coming to terms” tale.
The show is absolutely ridiculous in all the right ways.
Watch Part 2. You'll get the resolution to Part 1 at the beginning of the movie. I used to work in the movie theater when Karate Kid Part 2 came out, and that beginning sequence had the audience roaring every time. Part 2 is such a great sequel. You guys should definitely check it out as soon as possible.
I was just going to say that. Part 2 is its very own emotional story, but the beginning of it is the after battle scene you were looking for.
sometimes I just like watching the beginning of 2 just to see that
You need 2 and 3 then you can start the Cobra Kai show. So good.
Yes!
Agreed loved 2
I love it at the end when Danial says "We did it Mr. Miyagi! We did it!" He acknowledges that he couldn't have done it without him.
Yes. It's "We", It's not "I"
The word makes perfect ending.💯
"He learned karate from a book instead of looking it up on UA-cam" lmao, that was gold! It was the 80s - there literally was no UA-cam back then. 😆
That was the point. She said "it's LIKE looking it up on UA-cam"
Great life can exists without UA-cam. Even when they are controlling the masses, those of us who know how to do other things besides social media will be just fine lol!
@@kathleenclark815 I get it lol. That's why I found it funny.
When we saw this in the theater in '84, at the moment Daniel kicked Johnny in the face, the ENTIRE audience stood up and cheered. It was stunning.
Yep! It was amazing back in the day!
Fukin awesome!
@@AuntieNeda Still is!
That happened in my theater as well.
You mean that highly illegal kick? In all honesty Daniel shouldn't have been in the tournament
When I was about 11 years old, my parents took me to see this 1984. Almost the next day. My mom took me down and signed me up for karate lessons. By the time I was 20 I had my first black belt and by the time I was 25 I had two or three different disciplines. I practiced and part time taught karate for over 30 years before stepping back due to some health related issues.
Respect
Cobra kai is about redemption. It's a must watch.
That's great. We're pretty much the same age...I never took karate. Wish I did. I was bullied as a kid much like Larusso. I did grow to a decent size guy and got some payback on my former bullies over the years, just in humiliating them, never laid any of them out. I never thought about how many kids this movie influenced to take up karate though.
I think for many of us who grew up in the 80s, this movie has such a special place in our hearts. I love it because I'm such a fan of when the underdog(s) win. Even more so watching the connection between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi but also the connection Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita had. This movie also showed one of my favorite places to hang out when I was a kid, Golf 'N' Stuff. It was on the border of Norwalk and Downey, CA. I lived in Downey most of my life so I went there a lot. It was so much fun and watching this movie really brings back memories. 😎👍
My wife and I took our kids there last November for a bit of Karate Kid movie Nostalgia to share with them. It wasn't the same as it was then since they took down the coaster and the movie made it look a lot nicer, but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless!
@@algallego Yeah. The water slide you see behind the scenes was shut down for years. In fact, they only had it operating again for this movie. It was rumored that a little kid had died from being thrown out of the slide and that's why they shut it down. Once the were done shooting the scenes, they closed the water slide right back up. Which was a bummer because I really wanted to go on it. It looked fun. Of course it's completely gone now and they did a lot of renovations on the park. You don't have to go up and down that hill to the parking lot. The mini golf course got bigger. The part that was the best was the Indy cars. The bumper boats were fun too. I was usually in that arcade though. Trying to win those tickets. LOL
"for many of us who grew up in the 80s, this movie has such a special place in our hearts" ... yeah, Elisabeth Shue ... hot, hot, hot ♨🌶🔥 !!!
When I was growing up on this movie I was much more scared of Dutch than I was of Johnny. Johnny kinda reminded me of the older boys I knew. Dutch was like a wild dog.
@@tristramcoffin926That's funny! I thought he was crazy, too! Dutch is played by the son of actor, Steve McQueen.
This movie had a HUGE influence in pop culture, after this was released, every boy wanted to be on karate.
And girls to 😊
True. The same as every kid probably wanted to become a boxer after watching Rocky, incidentally also directed by the same director who did this movie.
I love the fact that Ralph Macchio still has the yellow convertible. He got to keep the car and has held onto it. He even used it in the Cobra Kai TV series.
The blonde girl in this movie played by actress, Elisabeth Shue, is in another really popular 80s movie called, "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987). It's a lot of fun, and you two would truly enjoy it. 🙂
No, no, no they should watch "Cocktail" with her and Tom Cruise
She was also Marty McFly's girlfriend/wife in Back To The Future 2 and 3.
There is a hard to find movie called Baby’s Day Out, about a baby that gets lost in the city and the bad guys that are hunting him (I don’t recall why). It’s a silly premise (not home alone) but there are scenes in the movie that made me laugh so hard that I got lightheaded. Particularly the scene when the baby gets ahold of a lighter, catches something on fire, and the bad guys trying to put it out. 😂
Leaving Las Vegas, with Nicholas Cage. Totally out of the box for them both. Very good movie
Yes they should definitely watch adventure in babysitting!
As a bullied kid, these movies resonated with me back in the day. The interesting thing is, once I started taking Karate, they all left me alone. And it wasn't because I was broadcasting that I was taking it or anything. In fact, I had always hoped that the next time they came up to me, I'd surprise them and fight back, but it never came to that. And that's when I learned what Karate is truly about. The only thing that changed was my confidence. I no longer looked like a victim, so they stayed away. Just as Daniel responds to Mr. Miyagi's question: "then why learn?" "So I don't have to fight". To answer your question, yeah, bullies really do gang up on you like that, because bullies are cowards. They never go one on one.
It's a good franchise. Will Smith's kid is actually in the 5th movie of the franchise, and it's actually about Kung Fu, not Karate. 1-3 follow Daniel, the 4th follows another character. The TV show, however, is excellent. Worth a watch if you decide to watch 1-3. The others aren't necessary, though I have a soft spot for the Kung Fu Kid, since that's what I study now.
Hardly the same franchise. Just a really hackneyed remake.
@@theradgegadgie6352 true
1 and 2 are great... but it falls off fast into bad after that. I don't even consider Jaden Smith's movie a part of the IP.
@@sandman_says_runrunner4701 I still liked 3, but yeah, it is the 3rd best of the movies. I also don't consider Jaden smith's the same franchise. Only mentioned it because he said he thought he was in the 2nd one. I still like it ok, but yeah, 1 and 2 are the best (in that order).
I had friend in highschool who knew karate, and that’s exactly what always stood out to me about him: He never advertised it, he never had to use it, he just oozed this indestructible confidence in situations that threatened to become violent - and so they never did. Of course he was just a mere mortal like the rest of us in all other aspects of life, but in those scary situations he was this low key super hero who just instantly cooled everything down just by being there. It was kind of incredible to witness actually.
I remember finally getting this movie on VHS and I watched the ending 100 time back to back to back. Intense for the 80’s
I did the exact same thing. Was one of my favourite birthday presents (back when a VHS movie was $60!).
Now that you’ve heard two of the most iconic movie lines (“Wax on, wax off” and “You can’t handle the truth!”) in the last two movies you reviewed, you need to watch another movie, Crocodile Dundee, with an iconic line “That’s not a knife - this is a knife!” This will help further fill out your 70s/80s cultural awareness.
Lol... Yup...
You mean "knoife". 😆
"Sweep the Leg" is another one...as is "Code Red"
Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, who played Mr. Miyagi, earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance.
Still one of the best movies to come out of the 80's. I can't even begin to count how many times I see it and I still love watching it.
You mentioned Yoda in how Mr Myagi speaks in metaphors. I can tell you, as a kid growing up in the 80’s, Mr Myagi was synonymous with absolute wisdom on the level of Yoda 100%
The scene where Mr. Miyagi mourns his wife who died in the Japanese Internment Camp is heart wrenching, especially since Pat Morita himself was in such an Internment Camp in real life.
The studio wanted to cut that scene out because they felt it slowed the movie down. Plus they worried the theaters would lose an extra screening everyday if it wasn’t under a certain running time. Can you imagine? How did they not see how powerful that scene was? And to think they almost lost it for such a ridiculous reason
Pat Morita was nominated for an Academy Award for this performance. ICONIC character AND performance.
When Daniel bowed to him when he was already asleep, that was the ultimate sign of respect
Elizabeth Shue was awesome as Ali. She also played Jennifer in Back to the Future II and III. See her in the lead role in Adventures in babysitting.
I still quote Adventures in Babysitting. 😂
"He probably grew up to be a real gem."
You have to watch Cobra Kai to find out how Daniel and Johnny turned out when they grew up.
Yes, there were bullies like this everywhere in the 80s. *no shootings, though, (no prozac or zoloft either). It was a rite of passage to learn how to deal with bullies back then. This movie sparked a revolution for American youth. Karate studios started opening in every town.
It still floors me that if a kid defends themselves, they can get in trouble too nowadays? Back then we only cared about "Did you start it, or did you finish it?" As in, you got in trouble for starting a fight, but not for defending yourself.
I’m so happy!! This is my favourite movie of all time. And you totally understood what made it so great. Not the underdog story, the little romance, the bullies getting their comeuppance (all bonuses). The master stroke of this movie: The relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. 🥰🥰🥰 Love that you both loved it❤
Karate Kid is the Rocky for teens. The moment Daniel realizes the chores he was doing was the training he needed was mindblowing to me as a kid. Of course from then on all parents tried that lesson but i dont know that many kids bought in to it lol.
Ralph had a great role in The Outsiders. Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillion, Rob Lowe, Emilo Estevez - Steller cast! Fantastic coming of age movie.
Stay Golden, Ponyboy
The Outsiders is awesome
Gotta watch the original version and not the (complete novel version)
Sure they add more scenes but they also add abunch of music that changes the tone of many scenes. Especially the rumble.
My all time fave!
@@josephamoraz7990no they need to watch the complete novel because it has better dialogue
Amber, about Johnny: "he probably grew up to be a real gem!" I am absolutely DELIGHTED at the prospect that you can now FIND OUT how he grew up! 🥰
And not only find out how he grew up, but get to understand through flashbacks what he was like before the first movie.
Not just decorated, but that was a Congressional Medal of Honor. Most people who are recognized with that die in the action they are being recognized for.
Miyagi telling Daniel "Always look eye" 31:55 isn't meant to say don't put yourself "beneath" someone else. It is sage advice about never taking your eyes off your opponent. Probably based on Bruce Lee's "Never take your eyes off your opponent. Even when you bow."
Cobra Kai the Netflix show is a must watch. It's about Johhny and Daniel and their relationship as adults, each running their own dojo. I could never have imagined how different it was from what I expected, yet still amazing and compelling.
it's cheesy, but it's great cheese
I thought for sure they picked this because of CK. But they have no idea who Jonny is so i guess not…
@@greggreg7612 It's also better than all the KK movies.
…but first you have to watch all the originals!!!
I was hooked when Johnny btfo’ed kyler and his goons that first episode
William Zabka (Johnny) at 18 was the only actual teenager in the main cast, Ralph Macchio (Daniel) was 22, Elizabeth Shue was 20 and the Cobra Kai guys were either 22 or 23.
I was about to comment the same thing lol
That’s funny cause Johnny definitely looks older than Daniel in this. It appears like “hey, why are you picking on that smaller kid”.
I'm the same age as William Zabka and I thought it was funny that J thought he looked older. Ralph just ages slowly. I remembered him from Eight is Enough, so I knew he was older. BTW William Zabka is a super nice guy if you ever get a chance to meet him in person.
@@bradparnell614 I’ve seen him in interviews and seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Ralph legit looks 40 years old these days.....and dude is in his 60s
The beginning of Karate Kid 2 is actually the original ending of the first movie.
I hope you two watch it, i think you'll really like it!
The actor who plays Dutch is the son of Steve McQueen. His son is Steven R McQueen from Vampire diaries and his stepdad is Luc Robitaille
I'm a 50 something year old woman and this was my childhood. I love all of the Karate Kid movies. Ralph macchio was my crush and I met him a few years ago at Niagara Comic Con. I've looked everywhere and not a single react has reacted to his movie The Outsiders. It is iconic!!! It stars Tom Howell , Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise in his first ever movie roll and Patrick Swayze amoung other stars. Please give it a try.
I am 52 this year and, yes, these movies rock. Hope you enjoy the Cobra Kai series on Netflix as much as I do.
Yeah! Jay and amber should definitely watch The Outsiders. They are from Oklahoma as well.
Actually Taps was Tom Cruise first big movie roll a couple years before The Outsiders 😊
Yes Outsiders is a great movie. Idk why no one ever reacts to it.
If you decide to do the Outsiders make sure to bring a full box of tissues.
Pat Morita was amazing in this film. So many lesser movies would have had Mr Miyagi be the cliche stoic, inscrutable, humourless sensei, but Pat brought such warmth and humanity to the role
The "Cobra Kai" series is awesome acting and action. Billy Zabka as Johnny is my favorite.
I love the way they revisit these characters and take them even deeper in the series, and it's real self aware and funny. A rare quality of show relative to it's original films.
The first few minutes of Karate Kid II make Johnny and his friends a little more sympathetic. The Cobra Kai series gives even more of Johnny's back story and shows things from his point of view.
I loved Cobra Kai. Made me like Johnny, which 10 year old me would have never believed 😂
@@nunyabusiness6654 I love Johnny now. Never would have believed it when I first watched the movie in the 80s.
I believe that scene was originally shot to be the ending of the first movie, but it was felt to be a less satisfying finale. Thank goodness it carried on to the next one, because it IS a great scene.
Y'all should definitely check out the sequel. It's my favorite and most different entry in the franchise (including Cobra Kai and the two reboots). It's way more Miyagi's story as he's haunted by his history as he and Daniel visit Japan.
Agreed! On a music note, I believe you will recognize a few of the songs.
“He probably grew up to be a real gem” 😂🤣
About the time this movie was released, I was going to the same Youth Group at Church with William Zabka, Johnny. When we met we both siad to each other "You look familiar!" and I immediately liked him. A few weeks later we were all on a Youth Retreat and my friend Gary and I were on a Catamiran off the coast of Catalina and our boat turned over and William was one of the first to come out and help us turn the boat back over so we coul;d get back to shore.. Good Times!!
As a Gen X'er who was nearly 11 years old when this came out in the summer of 1984, this movie is one of the things that made that summer great, and it is one the things that made the 1980's great. We will never have another time like that again. Hello from northeast Ohio.
I was 13 (grew up in Eastlake)...best times of our lives!
@@MarkJones-rl9ph , good to see a fellow Buckeye on here. I'm from Canton. Thanks for saying hello!
I was in high school at Smithville Ohio when this came out absolutely loved this movie
I remember seeing this in the theatre when it first came out. Every single time at the end the entire audience works leap to their feet in applause for the last kick. I’ve never seen anything like that again in a movie theater. This is a phenomenal movie!!!
I remember the same, though I did see something similar in a theater one other time as well, when Doc Holiday kills Ringo on Tombstone.
I'm so happy theres an entire new generation that appreciates this film.
"Wax on. Wax off." Most famous and most repeated line from this movie. 😄
Pat Morita was a comedic actor most of his career. He was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Mr. Miyagi. Pretty impressive for a guy who couldn’t even walk until he was 10 years old. Miyagi and Daniel’s relationship is one of the best in cinematic history. You have to watch Karate Kid II! PS- you have to watch all the karate kid movies (with Ralph Macchio) BEFORE you watch Cobra Kai to fully appreciate all the storylines and characters. But definitely watch Cobra Kai after you watch those movies. Such a fun ride.
Remember him on Happy Days? Caught him in an episode of Hawaii 5-0 the other day as well.
Please watch “The Outsiders” next!
It’s loaded with amazing actors, and is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Fabulous movie!
The Outsiders is a must reaction. So many great actors getting their start.
@@IZPC did you know Flea is in this movie? He is one of the soc’s.
@@jennyjenny4501 yes, but it was many years later.
You should read about Pat Morita's real life story. He endured incredible hardships. His family was interred in a concentration camp during WWII. He suffered from spinal tuberculosis and was separated from his family. Doctors used him for experimental back surgeries and at the age of 11 he was finally able to walk but always in great pain. He still used his life to bring joy to everyone around him. 30 years after this film Ralph Macchio delivered a eulogy at his funeral. He ended it with the line "Forever my sensei". You should watch movies 2 and 3 in the trilogy then the Cobra Kai series. It really dives into back stories and brings back so many of the original cast members all these years later. It has a lot of tribute scenes to Mr Miyagi and the lasting effect he had on everyone.
That part where Daniel strikes and "You're the Best" starts playing is epic. great start to the tournament.
I have practiced martial arts on and off for over 40 years. I remember seeing this movie when it came out like it was yesterday. It was one of the greatest examples of the true philosophy behind martial arts ever. I would strongly suggest you watch the rest of the series, and then do some reactions to the Netflix Cobra Kai series which is fantastic and picks up with the same characters played by the same actors. It's one of the best things on TV in a very very long time
Agree 💯
Glad y'all liked it, I've loved this since I was a kid. Please don't forget about part 2 & 3 and there's also one called (The next karate kid) with Hillary Swank, and then of course the newest.
Then Cobra Kai!!
The remake is not considered part of the franchise as far as continuity goes, it's like an alternate version I guess. But as for Cobra Kai, at least, it's not part of the story.
@@ragabashmoon1551 Remake was great but should have been called Kung Fu Kid.
@@atwistoffate1052 Yes but Swank & Morita were great together. The parts at the monastery were fantsstic. In addition highly likely Swank will be in Season 6 Cobra Kai so should watch for that reason alone.Agree the villians ( and their story arc) were laughable and made no sense..Too bad because Michael.Ironside is a legendary actor but Col Dugan was a dud.

Yes, Amber we dealt with bullies all the time, but we learned to stand up for ourselves. There has always been and will always be bullies, physical, mental or even cyber. :)
I’m not sure if you guys realized but the medal Daniel held from Mr. Miyagi was the Medal of Honor. It’s the highest award for valor you can receive in the US military.
Also, according to Wikipedia, Mr. Miyagi was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, historically the most highly decorated unit, for it's size, in the U.S. Military. And while he was fighting for his adopted country, his wife and unborn son were being held prisoner at Manzanar Relocation Center, which was a type of concentration camp for Japanese Americans, one of many around the country. In fact, Mr. Miyagi had also been imprisoned there along with his wife and unborn son before he joined the Army. It's SAD that while he was fighting for his new country, the country was depriving his family of their rights and liberties because of their ethnicity! And you can even hear Mr. Miyagi say, while he was crying, that there was no doctor present for his wife during her childbirth. 😢
@@hallieharker4384 It's even sadder when you know that Pat Morita himself was in fact interned in one of those camps . He was sent to a camp in Arizona to join his family at 11 years old directly after being released from the hospital from spinal surgery and learning how to walk due to spinal tuberculosis he contracted at 2 years old. His supporting actor Oscar nomination worthy performance as Mr. Miyagi was due to that heartbreaking scene which was highly influenced by his own interment as he knew full well the painful mark of that experience .
My favorite movie of all time! Thanks so much for reacting! You should consider watching Karate Kid II...not the remake with Jaden Smith, but the second one with Daniel & Mr. Miyagi! You will LOVE it! Very different, but an amazing story! Also, don't sleep on the Cobra Kai TV show. It showcases an adult Daniel & Johnny, gives you some new insight into their characters over the years, & shows off some amazing new characters. Also, it brings back so much nostalgia with nods and cameos from Karate Kid, Karate Kid II, & Karate Kid III. If you react to any of that, you have my views! Thanks for the entertaining reaction & God bless!
@darktitan6308 I don't have as much of a problem with The Next Karate Kid. I actually like the story, for the most part, but it's not on par with the Daniel storyline. Naturally, that makes it an immediate disappointment. And yes, Jaden was probably born about 4-5 after that movie was released. I don't fault him for it not being on par with the others. The studio should have known better than to deviate so much from the original. That never wins over the diehard fans. Even if they had kept it close to the script, it was nearly impossible to catch lightning in a bottle twice. Morita and the rest of the cast made the films special. Chan/Smith couldn't manage to replicate that chemistry.
The duo playing the song on the beach is Jan And Dean. They were a similar, competitive group to The Beach Boys.
There was no such thing as a Crane Kick when this movie was made. It was invented on set by a friend of mine, Darryl Vidal, who plays one of the fighters in the Tournament. It's actually Darryl doing the kick as Mr. Miyagi. Darryl is a Martial Arts Master and has a studio in Murrieta, CA. He's currently having a pint in Ireland with his wife. :-)
Well your friend Darryl inspired a lot of childhood shenanigans. We were kicking the hell out of everything; walls, furniture, friends.... and then our parents came home from work to see the damage....😇
IIRC, he's the guy Johnny defeats in the semi finals. A subtle nod to Johnny's true character is when he shakes the guy's hand after beating him. It's a slight foreshadow to Johnny handing Daniel the trophy at the end. Johnny simply had a bad teacher.
I took karate as a kid. The crane kick is just a jumping front kick with extra steps. In reality it wouldn’t be used in self defence or in a tournament, because you have to stand there on one foot and wait for your opponent to get within kicking distance. And no one’s going to do that, because it’s obvious that you’re standing there waiting to kick them. A jumping front kick is done quickly and without the unnecessary extra steps, allowing you to catch your opponent by surprise when you use it, thereby making it more effective.
Yes, there is such a thing as the crane technique watch old kung fu episode’s the ones from the 1960s.
@@gerardconsidinejr3258 That’s the crane technique in Kung Fu, not the crane kick used in The Karate Kid. There is a huge difference.
Definitely watch part 2 and 3 and then watch Cobra Kai. You’ll need the context from all three karate kid parts for the show. But it’s definitely worth it. Cobra Kai is a lot of fun. It’s a perfect combination of 80’s nostalgia, over the top martial arts, karate kid lore, MTV teen drama, and so much more.
👍👍👍
At secondary school in the late 80s, just before we'd finish up for the Xmas holidays the teachers would always show a movie in the assembly hall to the whole school. One year it was Karate Kid and you can just imagine the carnage at the end, with a whole bunch of pumped up teenage Bruce Lee / Jackie Chan wannabes being let out. Classic movie and great times.
I respect the fact that you restrain yourself from calling them bad names Jay that just shows what a good person you are
I love Mr. Miyagi's training style at the beginning. He knew that Daniel was years behind the Cobra Kai's in training. He had to overcome that experience gap quickly. So all that menial labor was meant to teach Daniel muscle memory for his blocks. They had to be reflex if he was going to be effective in the counter attacking style of Miyagi-Do. The writer knew what they were doing with this story.
Not just muscle memory, but muscle tone, too, as well as patience, discipline, and--let's face it--obedience.
LIFE.....Is repetition.
Did either of you recognize the actor who played Daniel? Ralph Macchio was in "My Cousin Vinny", he was Vinny's cousin, Billy one of the guys being accused of murder. I've always loved this movie. RIP Pat Morita.
Some fun facts: the last dude Johnny fought before Daniel was a stunt double for Mr Myagi and an excellent martial artist, he also helped create the crane kick for the movie. Also, the ref at the tournament was the fight coordinator. Tommy from cobra Kai is also a legit martial artist
Ron Thomas, the actor who played Bobby was the trained martial artist. Sixth-degree Black Belt in Kodendkan Ju-Jitsu. Everyone else had to learn during the film. Apparently Chad McQueen who played Dutch was a bit too rough during the scenes he fought in.
@@C2JPUNK35 I forgot about him too, he was really good, especially with that kick to take out Daniels leg
Elizabeth Shue the love interest of Daniel's has been in many notable movies here is the list of her outstanding roles:
1. "The Karate Kid" (1984) - Shue played the role of Ali Mills, the love interest of the main character Daniel LaRusso in this iconic martial arts film.
2. "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987) - Shue portrayed the lead character, Chris Parker, in this comedy about a babysitter's wild night in the city.
3. "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995) - Shue gave a critically acclaimed performance as a prostitute named Sera, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
4. "Hollow Man" (2000) - Shue starred opposite Kevin Bacon in this sci-fi thriller about a scientist who becomes invisible.
5. "Cocktail" (1988) - Shue played a prominent role as Jordan Mooney, a love interest to Tom Cruise's character, in this romantic drama.
6. "The Saint" (1997) - Shue starred alongside Val Kilmer in this thriller where she portrayed a scientist caught up in a dangerous plot.
7. "Back to the Future Part II" (1989) and "Back to the Future Part III" (1990) - Shue took over the role of Jennifer Parker (originally portrayed by Claudia Wells) in the second and third installments of the beloved "Back to the Future" franchise.
8. "The Grudge" (2004) - Shue appeared in this horror film about a haunting curse, playing the character of Karen Davis.
9. "Hamlet 2" (2008) - Shue showcased her comedic talent in this satirical comedy as herself, playing a fictitious version of herself.
10. "Piranha 3D" (2010) - Shue had a role in this horror-comedy about killer prehistoric fish terrorizing a lake.
These are just a few examples, and Elizabeth Shue has had a diverse career with many other movies and TV appearances.
I would like to see you watch and react to Cocktail with Tom Cruise and the saint with Val Kilmer
This made my night! Please do all the movies and you guys would love the cobra Kai show that comes after. You wouldn’t regret it!
There was unused footage from after the competition that the filmmakers used in the beginning of Karate Kid 2, so you should definitely check that out! The Miyagi and Daniel relationship is central to all three movies. I, and I'm sure many other viewers, would LOVE for you to react to Cobra Kai. It's better than it has any right to be. You see the other side from the perspective of Johnny Lawrence (you asked who raised these kids to be bullies...well, Cobra Kai gives answers), as well as a grown up Daniel. Practically everyone with speaking lines in the original Karate Kid make appearances in Cobra Kai, but it's not just fan service--they make for poignant stories. There are similar surrogate father/son relationships with the high school age kids in the show, and the moral questions surrounding karate, bullying, and feuds, are developed in such a beautiful way. Mr. Miyagi has passed away in the show (like Pat Morita, who played him), but his presence is still very much felt. I know you guys haven't done tv shows on the channel yet, but I hope you'll make an exception for Cobra Kai--you won't be disappointed, and the episodes are pretty short so it's not as big a commitment as other shows. Just 30 minutes apiece, with 10 episodes a season.
I didn't really want to watch Cobra-Kai as a fan of the original films I thought it would be sh*t but after the first couple of episodes I went through the first 3 seasons in a day and couldn't wait for the 4th. Like you say, it's good in its own right and not just 'fan service' but still will add to the films for any fan.
I hope they do too, Cobra Kai is sooo great!
I really like the perspectives that Mr. Myagi needs Daniel as much as Daniel needs him and that Daniel is like the son Mr. Myagi never had. Makes total sense!
It's sad that you can't blame Johnny for everything he does, and even sadder you can't blame Kreese for everything he does because of PTSD
The recent Karate Kid Cobra Kai series is actually done very well and worth watching for all the fans of the originals. Things aren’t always what they appear in life. You don’t need to see Karate Kid 2 & 3 to understand what’s going on in Cobra Kai because they do such a good job with flashback scenes. I couldn’t get through watching 2 or 3 and fully understood what was going on with the flashback scenes in Cobra Kai.
The scene where Iohnny is listening to Chappy from Iron Eagle really got me…
I LOOOOVE Cobra Kai!!!
Johnnys music and tshirts are awesome !
Agree I think they'd Love the Cobra Kai series.
They totally need to watch 2 and 3 before Cobra Kai to get the most out of it. There are so many easter eggs in the series that its an injustice to not watch all 3 before.
So glad you guys started the Karate Kid journey. Hopefully you guys wont wait to watch the other two movies. Once you are done with the trilogy you guys need to watch the TV series Cobra Kai. It will not be what you think and it definitely is worth it.
I studied karate for many years and this is by far my favourite film about the martial arts because it embodies what they are truly about. I would strongly recommend this film’s sequels Karate Kid 2 & 3. They’re both very good films that go deeper into the relationship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel and reveal more about Mr. Miyagi’s past. After that go straight into the Netflix series Cobra Kai which picks up with the story and the characters 40+ years later and features the original cast at their current ages. It’s a great TV series and I’d love to see your reactions to it.
BTW, the “karate uniform” is called a Gi (pronounced “ghee”).
There is also the "new" karate kid with the girl learning from miagi . . . Who is kinda part 4 of the storyline (but not mentioned in Kobra kai cause its about miagi who is curently dead , Daniel san dont know about Julie San . . . Could be great if they find a way to introduce her in the show as a sensei of miagido or something . . . Julie do know about daniel cause miagi mention it so she could be the one to make contact for some reason
Growing up in the 80’s, every kid heard “Sweep the leg.” and “Wax on, wax off.” hundreds of times.
All 3 karate kid movies are pretty amazing !!!!
I worked at a movie theater during the summer of 1984 when this movie came out, and I must have seen the ending about 200 times and it was thrilling every time. A few years later I studied karate and Mr Miyagi's lessons on "balance" always stuck with me.
I also worked at a movie theater the year it came out. I would always sneak into the theater to watch the crane lick scene while working
A truly classic movie, and one that never gets old. So many quotable and memorable moments, but the absolute best one is right at the end. Right from the time Daniel scores the winning point on.
Johnny Lawrence swallows his pride for a short, but crucial time and hands the trophy to Daniel telling him "You're all right, LaRusso!" Daniel takes the trophy, celebrates and shouts for Mr. Miyagi who looks on with all the pride of a father. That look he gives him is on the top 5 of all 80s freeze-frame endings.
If they'd have ended the series there it would have worked perfectly. But they blessed us with story after story. And now, we have Cobra Kai!!!
Karate Kid was a cultural phenomenon. Wax on, wax off became a thing. Every kid was trying the crane technique.
I found an old interview with Pat Morita recently. When he auditioned for this part, that old gritty voice just came out spontaneously. His normal voice is much higher. He left the interview and said to himself, where the hell did that come from? I really blew that one. But that voice he put on at the last second got him this part.
This movie was so influential in my life as a kid. My family was stationed in Japan when my dad was still in the Navy. This movie inspired me to start studying Karate while in Japan. I now have my own dojo back in the states. Love this movie. So glad you guys reacted to this. Watch all 4 movies before watching Cobra Kai. You guys will like it.
I enjoyed reading this. I was starting Shorei Goju Ryu a month or two before it came out but my Sensei had told us about it. He even told my parents that it would be a good movie for us to see. I loved it and still do to this day.
Pat Morita who played Mr. Miagi unfortunately died a few years back but everyone who saw this in the 80's felt a deep sadness that we had lost a great part of our childhood.
Back in the day, when the movies were better, and theaters were crowded. People actually sometimes clapped at good parts, boo at bad guys. This one would have been noisy at the end and ended in cheers. We ❤ movies like this one.
Best part of watching the Karate Kid series, is to definitely watch the new COBRA KAI Series! It's the best!! Same actors, too. All grown up & the storyline is amazing!
The Cobra Kai series has been a smashing success... it's fantastic with these same characters & their Children... a must watch whether you react to the series or not...
The song playing during the tournament, was originally written for a Rocky movie, but got rejected. It found new life in this movie!
2 is actually my favorite. The karate is more brutal and thr focus on different characters is very touching
Yes! The 2nd one is the best in my opinion too.
William zabka who played Johnny Lawrence and Martin Kove who played Kreese are real sweeties in real life. This past weekend I got to see them at a fan event. I met Ralph this year and he was very nice.
Marty Kove is like the sage elder to them. We don't have Pat anymore. He's a great actor to so convincingly play such a hard ass but be one of the nicest guys IRL.
It's almost always the sweetest people in the world can play the best bad guys.
One of my all time favorite films! You should definitely watch the sequels (not meaning the remake with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan) as well. And then Cobra Kai!
I Just said that, lol. Cobra Kai is so good.😊
I would love to see them watch Cobra Kai.
"I need, like, AFTER STORY!" - You get in Karate Kid 2. It literally follows on from this moment at the tournament.
The most hilarous thing is that in real life Martin Kove is like the sweetest most gentle guy in the universe.
Karate Kid Part II picks up right where this one leaves off, and you'll love the very beginning of it for sure!
I dealt with bullying in school. It's not fun. Bully's are the worst.
Daniel is the bully. He instigated every fight .
When that happen always fight win or lose but always fight and you will get respect.
Me too.
I used to stand up for people that were bullied in school. I was bullied until I got taller than most people. Used my humor to disarm them. I'm sorry you went through that.

Mr. Miyagi is one of the most belived movie characters of all time. I love this movie and was so sad when Pat Morita died. Karate Kid II is worth a look. You will see Mr. Miyagi in a different light.
You guys have to remember - this was way before the anti-bullying movement got started. There was no peer mediating , no support organizations or anything like that. Bullies really could be this nasty, especially in places like California, particularly the wealthier parts of it. But it happened all over the country.
Back then, if you were being picked on, you had two choices - “just ignore them” (which NEVER worked and in fact almost always made things worse) or “fight back,” which usually meant learning some kind of martial art for self defense. Most of the time, this would put a stop to it (unless the bully was a complete psychopath, which was extremely rare). Telling a teacher or other adult usually got you labeled a “tattle tale” or a “rat,” sometimes by the adult you were telling.
Nowadays, though, students have far more resources available to them to help combat bullying in school and online. And besides, if you fight a bully today, tomorrow they come back with a gun.
The scene where Daniel finds out about Miyagi’s family as well as discovers his Medal of Honor still gets me. He was a Japanese immigrant fighting for the country he chose as his home against the country he was born in, while his wife and unborn child are interned at a camp with thousands of other because the US government didn’t trust any Japanese people in the US.
I grew up on the Karate Kid through the 80s. Its still one of my favorite films. I highly recommend you two check out the Cobra Kai series! Even if you dont review it here you should still watch it as its an excellent show and dang near perfect continuation of the original trilogy.
The movies leave a lot of things open-ended, but the Cobra Kai series does a great job at bringing them closure.
Love the Cobra Kai series. They did an amazing job
Same same same
Karate Kid is the Rocky movie for adolescence. Not a coincidence that Rocky 1 and the Karate Kid share the same director.
And I must say, that I loved how Johnny Lawrence wanted to present the championship trophy award to Daniel at the end. Why? Because I believe Johnny really had a guilty conscience about what he was instructed to do by his Sensei John Kreese.
Those Cobra Kai‘s bullied Daniel, jumped him, pushed him downhill, while riding a bike, embarrassed him, and even beat him to the point of unconsciousness. Then they were told to injure him & fight dirty in the tournament... And Daniel still won the match on one leg! Johnny had no other alternative but to respect Daniel at the end.
